Title: I made over 600 custom ponies, do any survive? Lol
Post by: Colorscapesart on April 06, 2020, 06:13:59 PM
Hi all!!  Quarantine has me cleaning my modest pony collection and seriously missing "the good ol days" when I had 2,000 ponies and made tons of customs.

I'm so deeply out of touch, I have a few questions:

-What has changed??

-Did anything I made survive the last few years?  I tried to make things fairly archival (not in the beginning lol)

-Do custom still sell to at least cover costs?  (i.e. a decent G3 custom $20-$40ish)?

I am super nostalgic but hesitant to fire up that machine again.  Should I stay or should I go now (that song is now in my head)

If you are bored, here is an album of some of my ponies.

CSA!! :tackleglomp: Great to see you again!

I don't think I'm lucky enough to own one of your customs, so unfortunately I can't tell how well they may have held up. But I have customs by other artists from around the same time and they all seem to be fine. I'm sure yours are too! Aah I always dreamt of getting one of your icy winter customs...

As for your other questions, the number of customisers has dropped significantly, and some who continue don't post their work on the Arena anymore but have moved on to social media platforms. Luckily we still have some active people here, and many new custom enthusiasts! I have personally been too busy with other things for a good while and I'm only now slowly getting back to customising. (And when I say slowly... I'm lucky if I can produce one or two each year!)

I'm also quite out of touch when it comes to selling customs... but I know I would still be happy to pay (at least) that much for a decent G3 custom!

Griffin!! :tackle glomps:  You are one of my favs!  It is exciting to see the new artists.  Posting in different places makes sense as to why I'm not seeing too many familiar places.  The Arena is still my pony home (And I'm not sure how well my real estate clients would appreciate seeing pony customs lol)

I would love to create an icy pony again at some point, but gathering the materials again feels a bit daunting.  It's funny how you can gradually step into craft supply hoarding.  Icy ponies take the basics, hair, glue, paint, a steady hand (lol), airbrush, glitter, crystals, sometimes apoxie sculpt.....wait, has anything better than apoxie sculpt hit the market??

Thank you for answering my questions!

I may or may not have sorted my baits last night

CSA!!! It's so good to see you again! You were always one of my favorite artists and one of the first customs I ever got was made by you.

I still have customs by you, a total of 6  Honestly, they have held up as some of the best in my collection (over 60). I don't know if you remember, but I have a lot of trouble with sealant going tacky in my climate. A lot of customs by other artists have accumulated sticky dust and cat hair over the years that I can't clean off without risking the paint. But yours? They dust off effortlessly and are as fresh and clean as the day I got them. The lights still work in the skeleton sparkle pony custom too :D

Personally, I would pay like anything for your ponies  Your Steampunk ponies were always favorites of mine and I so wanted a version done of my ponysona. But I know that's probably a huge project after being out of the game for a while.

I don't think you'd have any issue selling, at all (I might be biased though).

Yay!!  You make my heart so happy!  You do that anyways, just by being you.  My love for testors dullcote sealant has increased!  I tried so many different things, that was the one that changed the game for me.  The customs I still own from various amazing artists are a bit hit or miss on the tackiness too.

YAY for the skeleton still working, that is awesome!  She was my fav Halloween pony ever.  Your ponysona would rock as a steampunk pony, but with those wings you are so right that it's an ambitious project.

I'm working up the gumption to rehair something today I think.  What have you been up to?

Funny you mention rehairs as to me the ones who stand out in your album have metallic paints & sculpted hair, like bronze statue Ponies!!! I've heard a lot of Customisers saying metallic effects are tough to get right, & though I have metallic paint, it still doesn't quite give the right vibe...

I also have a thing for all your Ponies wi multi-coloured hair...

yay CSA you are alive!  Oh my yes I have every custom of yours - no worries there please! So many faves - even the working music box pair ;-) (need to figure out how to record that one of these days)... Do you still have that working carousel??

YAY!!  I sold the carousel at the pony fair after the awards (it would have been a nightmare to ship) lol!  I have missed you MCM!!  :big hugs:

I never culled the CSA customs out of my herd. *hughug* Good to see you, Sugarbunny!! <3  I've been thinking about customs lately, too. I know just how you feel! :P Would be lovely to see your works pop up in here again, though.

I don't have any, I didn't really buy customs except for a few super cheap ones on EBay (under $20) but I remember being in love with the metal ones and trying to make one myself. It didn't end well  >_<

CSA! :cheer:
Another recent "returner" to customs here.
No idea about selling as I didn't get back into it, yet, but there is still a lot of pony love around. And some people are coming back :lovey:

Amazing to browse the customs you did. Wow. Sooooo maaaaany. I remember a lot of them. Always loved the rearing ones and Locket is one of my favourites too. Also your flamed welded customs. So many happy memories.
I don't think I own one of your customs  but it's so good to see Azure, the blue dragon in your collection. This makes me so happy. :D
Please get back into customizing. I want a CSA-custom...   :P

Hi there! I don't have any of your customs, but I always love to see pics of them!
As for the market... I stopped making customs with G1 bases starting this year, sales tapered off so much in 2019 it was difficult to make back the cost of the bait + a few bucks. I have a few G4 victims for sale no bites atm (I sell them for $15 or less!!)

I have your “flamed kissed” Moondancer!  She has held up great and is not tacky or sticky like some other customs.  She is on a shelf in my display cabinet with some of my more special ponies.  :) Good to see you again- I always loved your flame kissed ponies, and also the carousel you brought to the pony fair!

Wow, welcome back!! I think I did get a pony from you - it was a prize for winning some kind of contest you ran! She's beautiful, a purple appaloosa I believe! I can't track down any photos I have of her (probably on my old photobucket, LOL!), but I'll try to get a new one for ya! She's still here, still loving life! It's a real throwback to see your name again, I'm glad you came back! ^_^ I always wondered where you went!

EDIT: OMG, I just went through my PMs, and I realized - it was your fakie-makeover contest that I won all those years ago! She's still one of my favorite customs I made! It was such a fun contest, I think about it every time I see her on my shelf, and I think what a clever concept it was! Here's a little memory jogger:

Glad to see some familiar faces!

Personally I've had less time to make customs, though I try to post some once in awhile. Like someone else said, a few per year instead of nearly one per month. Some of my projects have branched out into plushes and other weird things lol.

I don't believe I have any customs of yours, CSA, but I've always been inspired by them!

I noticed activity dropping sometime during MLP:FIM. I'm sure some of it is because social media platforms are sucking away the pony people, but I also feel like some of it is because G4 was The Current Thing so there was just less interest in the other generations of ponies and pony art. I remember back when I joined it was G1 and G3 customs posted in the forum, then about 4-5 years ago (where has the time gone?) most of the customs posted were G4. Now less people post in Customs, but the ponies displayed there are from any generation it seems, so I think maybe some of that added G4 fanbase has moved on.

I do miss when things were more active; I remember when posts would drop off the front page within two days. In the Customs forum, my post from December is still on the front page. I'm glad to see there are some old-timers here like me!

Thank you! I do have him still, some of the armour got broken when my cats knocked him off the shelf (the tail plates) but otherwise he's still in a great shape. Looking at him makes me want to customize more fakies! :D

She's still living with my dear ex, since I don't have room here for my ponies,
But soon (couple of weeks) I get a new house so all my ponies can move in with me again

I'd love to have one of my other persona too, And I'll definitely want to pay what it's worth.

Sorry for the delay, it took me longer than expected to take her down from her shelf and actually photograph her! Here's fantasy-colors appaloosa!

I'm pretty sure I won her in some kind of contest, I want to guess coloring contest, because I entered a LOT of those! I asked for a 'pink and purple appaloosa', and man, you delivered! She's beautiful, and she still lives on my shelf in a place of honor! The only downside is that you didn't sign her, so I don't know what year I got her exactly! ^^; She's holding up fantastically, and her only flaw is a little bit of the sculpted hoof-feathering chipped off on her NDS side. It's easily hidden, and as you can see she still displays perfectly!

I would be ecstatic if you would start customizing again!!! I am sad to report I was not lucky enough to get one of yours in the past and would be first in line if you made new ones :-) I actually just saw one of yours sold on Ebay and wasn't quick enough to buy it :-( It was beautiful, blue and white with black shadow palm trees and such..so bummed I missed it!
