I remember someone posting a beautiful custom that they were commissioned to make featuring dandelions/wishmakers, all I can remember is that the colour scheme was unusual (brown/blue or dark red). I think it was either a G1 or G3 pony. It was absolutely beautiful.

I've tried searching on here as well as google, and I've not been able to find it, hopefully someone here can help me out.

Rather than starting a new thread, I figured I should just resurrect this one since it's regarding the custom below :)

Custom I'm referring to:
It's Dandy Darling made by Pop-Girl.

Oh my, she's beautiful!

I'm looking through her page at some of her other customs, and oh my gosh they're absolutely amazing!

I LOVE these:

I'm dying right now because I love, love, love these!!

Is she still around and does she take commissions?

I think Pop has retired, she was always one of the top artists I wanted a custom from :(

Aww man, her customs are truly beautiful. I would have loved to have a piece of her work in my collection.  :(

So, I had a question in regards to that Dandelion custom. Rather than starting a new thread, I figured I should just resurrect this one since it's regarding that Dandy Darling custom :)

I know Pop-Girl isn't making customs anymore, but I was wondering if it's wrong to commission another customizer to make something similar, but not exactly identical and with different colours? Is that a big no no?

In this sort of situation, I think you should ask for the artist's permission. It is her design after all, even if you change it up a little.

well it depends on what exactly you're wanting

if all you say is you want a dandelion themed custom in colors x, y, and z and pick your customizer based on their style (not their ability to copy someone else's style), then there's no issue. this includes the "all body" symbol style being ok to ask for. but if you start naming specific ways you want them to change their style to copy hers then it's not ok

I know I have been asked more than once to copy someone else's style in making something "generic" like a Swiftwind custom, and I told them I could make Swiftwind in MY style, but it would look different and they took that (appropriately) as a "no" and I never heard from them again.
Artists want you to commission them for their style, regardless of the theme.

I've seen several Starry Night inspired customs over the years, but they are all different in how the artist interpreted the original (and I am putting that painting in the same category as Swiftwind for the purposes of this example in that it's an icon all artists are aware of and can be inspired by and interpreted into a new medium)

I hope that makes sense for my 2cents there

I've done one for a customer who gave me that image as a reference but was told to do what I want, with something that simple it can get hard to make it look different.
I personally am not ok with straight up copying someone's design that's just not cool but if the customers gives it you just as one of their examples Of what they want it's different. Giving someone examples and artistic freedom is totes different than just straight up copying

You all make really good points. I guess i should've clarified that i would show this as an example and allow the artist to have artistic freedom. I know it's wrong to ask someone to copy it. I was just wondering if its ok to use her work as an example of what I love.

Using swiftwind as an example was perfect. I have definitely seem numerous customs and each one looks different from the last, each one showcases that artists talent and their own interpretation of that character :)

*sorry for any spelling or gramatical errors, I'm typing on my phone and it's not working as well as I would like lol.

Ah, than never mind me. I thought you meant that you wanted to replicate the style. My bad. Using other works as a reference should be just fine.

As a reference it should be fine, but based off sounds more like copying the original and we all seem to agree that is to be avoided. :)
