How to remove smoke smell from silk?
« on: April 29, 2012, 01:03:42 PM »
Hey, guys. So two christmas' ago, I received a length of embroidered silk from china. It is BEAUTIFUL. But, it was given to me by my father who is a very heavy smoker and it sat in his apartment for months. Two years of airing it out later, it still reeks. I so very much want to display it on my wall, but we are non smokers and people in my house have allergies, so it's hidden in a box in my closet. I want to know if there is a home remedy to the smoke smell so I don't have to risk dry cleaning it?

I just put it in a ziplock bag with three dryer sheets, if that does not work after a few days I think I'm going to try the baking soda. Thanks!

If neither of those work, maybe you could have it dry-cleaned?

If non of the above works, try taking some activated carbon charcoal made for aquarium filters, pour it in an open container,  tie said container up in a trashbag with the silk sitting next to it (but not touching for obvious staining reasons) and let it sit for about a week or two. I've found this to be a great method for getting out smokey smells.

Good luck! :)

I tried some dryer sheets lol So quick and simple and it worked! But, now I have noticed some yello staining near the top right hand corner and I'm scared it's nicotine staining. I might have to dry clean it after all *pouts*
