Title: Fun with Toy Story toys (Please share your pics!)
Post by: ZeldaTheSwordsman on September 20, 2020, 06:52:51 PM
I've been into Toy Story for the majority of my life, one of my early obsessions. What I've read about the plot of 4 puts me off watching it, although some of the toys hold appeal.

My collection consists of:
* My original Buzz from 1997, in a sorry state His head is missing, possibly swapped onto the later Buzz mentioned below. The epoxy repair to his left forearm failed, and the arm is missing (probably gone forever). Helmet also absent, incomplete. Jetpack is missing too; I took it apart to try repairing it but I have no idea where it got too. It may be in the garage, it may have been thrown out by mistake.
* A later Buzz (but still in the original design), with frayed wiring in need of repair IIRC, and suffering from an abortive effort to give him a working communicator. Might swap the head (back?) onto my original Buzz and turn this one into a different Space Ranger.
* Strummin' Singin' Woody from 1999, vest and bandana stolen by a kid who "borrowed" him, holster lost to the mists of time, guitar in need of having the battery box cleaned
* Silver and purple Megamorpher Buzz, a gift from an old friend of mine
* A few stray fast food figures IIRC
* Disney Store Buzz (Hawaiian Vacation but missing the clothes; also missing his communicator cover) obtained from a yard sale
* R.C., possibly the Toy Story Collection version, missing the remote. Also a yard sale find, though not from the same as Buzz
* One of the squeak-toy LGM aliens from Pizza Planet; mine is an actual rubber squeak-toy version, unlike the Toy Story Collection/Signature Collection versions. This was from the same slaw as R.C.
* A large mostly-soft Jessie doll with yarn hair, from yet another yard sale. Missing the hat.
A partial 1985-2009 style Mr. Potato Head (but lacking everything except for the blue shoes and maybe the hat).

I need "main" versions of Woody and Jessie (if anyone can make recommendations, let me know), as well as needing Zurg, Bullseye, Rex (at full movie size), Hamm (ditto, and he's even worse than Rex on that front; most merch of him is undersize), Bo Peep, Slinky, Mrs. Potato Head, and more.

Lately, I dug out the movie-accurate spaceship box I built (using a template by AndrewStrappers on DeviantArt), repaired the storage wear and fixed most of the structural faults, and added the glazing I couldn't when I first built it.

I haven't watched TS4 for the same reason... I still think that the third movie was the best possible way to end the series, the fourth one is just.... Eh.

I'm planning on selling some of my older Toy Story toys (space issues), but I'll be keeping the ones I'm fond of, such as my 2 Woody dolls (one accurate, one not so accurate) and Buzz figures. Anything Slinky Dog stays with me though, love that guy!

That box is pretty cool. Did they ever release a Buzz toy with a box like that?

There have been a few instances. One was for a small deluxe Buzz figure, and was 100% movie-accurate; Strappers' template was made by upscaling it. There's also the boxes for the Toy Story Collection/Signature Collection Buzz Lightyears, which are actually less accurate; they have a bunch of extra blurbs on them about the (IMO overengineered. And mis-engineered, in the case of Utility Belt Buzz) electronic features unique to the Collection Buzzes, the graphic on the back is placed incorrectly, and the spaceship canopy/display window comes down too far (in the movies, it doesn't go down to Buzz's waist, and this is actually plot-relevant in 2).

Photo of the whole collection. When I got the Thinkway Buzzes out I discovered something unfortunate had happened with the newer one: The spring in his left hip had actually exploded out of the front of the leg! :( Currently working on repairs...

Took a shot of Disney Store Buzz on my desk after repairing his left shoulder (And let me tell you, that was annoying because of how his arms are assembled; they're not screwed but rather held together by internal plastic pins - that I suspect were slightly melted in the case of the white upper arm piece - and glue).

...Except the option to attach files isn't showing...

Will this work?

...Something I realized I forgot to mention when I created this thread: I meant it as also being a thread where others could join in with their own Toy Story pics

Retitled the thread in line with the above ^

I got a new Woody in yesterday, a movie-size one with a pullstring voicebox. He was listed as having nonoperational electronics; I suspected battery leakage on the terminals, and I was right (hence why he's opened up in this pic). Unfortunately that seems to have not been the only problem, so I'm going to have to open him up again. I didn't see any disconnected wires, but maybe the boards need cleaning...

But for now, a pic of him standing proud. Note: The hat is not his own, it's borrowed from Strummin' Singin' Woody.

...This might seem "meh" to a lot of folks, but a movie-size pullstring voicebox Woody has been a grail of mine for ages.

Side note: I wish there was an actual Toy Story fan and collector forum. Pixar Planet had a Toy Story section, but that site is now a wasteland of spambots, forsaken by its staff... And it didn't have a marketplace section, so it wasn't the best even before that. I tried looking for a Toy Story-specific fan forum, but I could only find Pixar Planet and The Pixar Post. I'm tempted to start my own Toy Story forum, but A. I wouldn't be able to manage it if it got big, and B. My distaste for the 4th movie would probably poison it.

Thanks! :D

Trying to get the voicebox working though, yeesh..

I opened it up to fully clean the inner battery terminals, and had some difficulties resetting the pullstring winding drum while trying to reassemble it. While I was messing with that, during which a plastic nut and a spring kept escaping, I accidentally broke the wires attaching the speaker.

I soldered them back on (with some difficulty, one wire I couldn't get to sink properly into the solder), but the sound still doesn't work... I'm worried I may have burnt the chip. I gave up at that point and just focused on getting it back together with the pullstring rewind working, which I succeeded in (although it's not as good as before, sigh...).

I'm gonna see if I can get a replacement.

Yay, Toy Story! ^_^ I’ve loved it all my life—I remember collecting the original McDonald’s toys as a child (I still have them!). The 4th movie was not my favorite, but I enjoyed it—in the way that I enjoyed the holiday specials and shorts: as “bonus” adventures with the gang. I don’t think it packed the emotional punch of any of it’s predecessors, though.

I’d love to get together a to-scale collection! I mostly have the doll or doll-esque toys from the series (brushable Bo-Peep, brushable Jesse and Bullseye, and Barbie), and the rest is pretty random.

Thanks for sharing your photos! ^_^

Frankly, I think a compilation of the Post-3 shorts and holiday specials would have made for an infinitely better 4th movie. I will curse Toy Story 4 until the day it is declared non-canon. Breaking design continuity by turning Bo's sheep into Shawn clones is dumb, but that's just the rotten cherry on top of my biggest problems with it... undermining the happy ending of the third movie (and, for that matter, what the shorts and specials showed) is unforgiveable, as is sundering the fellowship. I can't watch the ending of Toy Story 2  or 3 anymore without rage at the fourth film boiling up in me...

Sorry about that...
Thank you for your kind words about my collection. A movie-scale collection is one of my goals too (so I'm little salty about how almost every toy of Hamm is undersize).. I suppose that's one positive about Toy Story 4: A full-size Rex toy.
I'd love to see your collection! Please, feel free to share pics!

I don't have any of my pieces with me right now, but I'll share pics when I can. Love the pics you've taken!

Just in case I need the spoiler tag
Spoiler
The worst part for me is that he just leaves Bonnie? He sticks by Andy's side through everything, even when he gives away Bo, and now we're expected to believe that Woody just leaves like that?
Bonnie would be probably be heartbroken when she realizes he's missing. Especially after she fell in love with him at one stage. Kids swap between their toys all the time, that was pretty much what the first movie taught us (when Andy lost both Buzz/Woody, he realized how much he still treasured Woody too). Guess Woody's just gonna forget that ever happened.

But eh, anyway. One toy I really want (but never saw in stores around me) is the Toy Story that Time Forgot Raptorian Guard figure. I'm not exagerrating when I say that I found the entire line for sale, but always that one figure was out of stock. Rows of figures, but no Raptor.

Have you had any luck on eBay?

Did up a lasso for Woody, and Titans Return Trypticon was big enough to be a good demo subject.

My feelings exactly. They actually show the storyboards that were made for different endings in the Blu Ray special features. There was apparently debate amongst the writers on which to use... In the other endings, Woody doesn’t split from the gang. I just like to pretend those are canon, instead. XD

Love those photos! The Domo-kuns are hilarious. XD

Oh, that's interesting! Must get my hands on the Blu-Ray one day!

And thank you very much! I love Domos - they are so funny!

Didn’t want to start a new thread, but have you guys seen the 25th Ann. Toy Story figures? I in LOVE with this Rex (https://smile.amazon.com/Toy-Story-Disney-Anniversary-Figure/dp/B07Y942XLX/ref=pd_bxgy_img_3/133-7755655-8954208?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07Y942XLX&pd_rd_r=a850ce40-4145-4794-b34b-f476357858ef&pd_rd_w=lr9BM&pd_rd_wg=5dYWT&pf_rd_p=f325d01c-4658-4593-be83-3e12ca663f0e&pf_rd_r=CKEXNMAMENRAS1ZXC7SB&psc=1&refRID=CKEXNMAMENRAS1ZXC7SB). I have not seen those before. That Rex does look cool! I love his space helmet! It's cool all of them have accessories that appear in the movies.
