Possibly a controversial opinion, but have you ever just given up on a pony or play set and said “it’s too far gone to save, might as well just throw it in the trash”? How do you define unsalvagable? I have some play sets and accessories (nothing rare) that I can’t imagine anyone doing anything to save, but it seems so wrong to throw a vintage pony thing away!

Once. It was a Lyra Heartstrings fresh from the store. She had this horrible poisonous chemical smell. I couldn't keep her, or give her to a little kid. She had to go.
-
I save every severed head. Customizing has proven to be quite fun, so even if it can't be restored it feels a bit better incorporating it into a new pony or donating parts.
-
I think if something was really moldy I would trash it. For playsets, I'd maybe try to see if I could sell/give them away in case someone could pillage parts from them, but if I didn't get any takers after a period of time, I'd junk it and not feel too guilty as long as I tried to rehome the stuff first.
-
I'm someone who says 'never trash a pony!', because even with rust, stains, no hair, someone somewhere will be able to find use for that pony! But after reading a few stories about ponies being filled with feces, I have to amend my statement. ALMOST never trash a pony, unless it's literally a biohazard!! :lmao: :X

Eww. Who...and why would anyone do that? :X

I would only throw away if too horrible to fix. Once there was this g3 pony in a lot. I think it had too many baths because it was full with water and smelled horrible.
As for better quality ponies that no one else wants. I know some one who customizes G1 and recently I gave away a bag full of g3's to a 4 year old girl of a friend.

not before I would offer it for free to the pony community.
Sure, it can be worthless to me, but that doesn't mean it's worthless to everyone.
-
Because of customizers I only throw biohazard ponies away ... mold, incurable stench, oozing, etc definitely come up more often than I’d like. >_<
-
Even mold can be possibly cured with a good bleach bath. I do try to clean up as much as I can, but definitely offer to the community first. Usually if that doesn't work, as long as they are still "play-with-able," they can go in the donation pile or free box for garage sale. Some of that stuff will find it's way to garden scenes or other decorative projects, so while maybe not the best for playing, still aesthetically pleasing and can add to someone's art project.

I never almost throw stuff away I mainly give it to the thift store if I dont offer it for free on here or the mlptp.

I threw away one pony, it was a G3 SunnyDaze. She was my "experimental" pony for customizing. I'd try something new on her before my chosen bait pony to see if whatever it was would work out. She was used and abused for a long time
I finally threw her out when the plastic started getting too funky from stripping paint off or chipping off sculpted bits. She was also missing her hind legs at that point. She served me well.
-
Never had to yet.
But do try hard to not be in a position where I have to make that choice.
However I agree with the "absolutely not unless it's a genuine biohazard" option.
-
Well I have some bald, baity g3's nobody wants. If giving them away for free fails, they will get thrown away I'm afraid. I don't like to do it, but if nobody wants them then nobody wants them.
-
I simply cannot do it! I keep them in a box. Occasionally I will open the box and say, I should just throw them out. Nobody wants them. But I can't! :freak:

PMed you :)

Luckily I've never been in that position... I couldn't throw one away, personally (I'd have to get someone else to do it for me ^^;), but IMO if something's in such bad shape that it's literally irreparable and not one part of it can be salvaged... it's time to trash it.
-
So far I've never thrown any ponies away. I've had them arrive covered in cat pee (twice), and smelling of cigarettes as well as mold. In fact I'm still, months later, working on a lot of ponies who arrived absolutely reeking of mold and filled inside with that mold: they could clear a room.
I have ponies with ears and parts of their hooves and horns chewed off, but I will try to save them all.

The bald, baity g3s I spoke of earlier have found a new home :)
