Welcome to write about nature and its wonders.  :hope:

There was also a pony forum here in Finland (which has already been closed  :( ) and there I also wrote this kind of nature thread. I miss those moments and I want to continue writing about nature here as well.

Nature is very important to me and I love to explore it. Spring and summer are the best times to make great observations and discoveries. But autumn and winter are also very nice seasons. Then you can make completely different observations.

(The picture of the hedgehog above is from 2016.)

Here's my earlier story from What made you smile today? - thread.  :)

May 07, 2022.

I almost came under attack from the hedgehogs!  :lmao:
At 10 o'clock in the evening I took food to the hedgehog. At first it was nowhere to be seen, but then I heard a puffing (is the word correct?) under the bush. I said, "Oh, there you are." I lowered the dish to the ground and turned toward my door until suddenly another hedgehog ran towards me!  Luckily, it just went past me right next to my foot and ran to another hedgehog. So they started pushing each other hard and their "hiss" continued louder. As the two hedgehogs fought, a rustle began to sound right next to me in the bush!  A third hedgehog emerged. It, in turn, ran to my feet to sniff me until it spotted the fighters and fled back into the bush in fright.
I finally got to sneak back inside for my own chores and left the hedgehogs to spend the spring.

These are certainly the same hedgehogs I met last summer. The fighters are males and what is hidden is a female.  :)

That's really exciting, hedgehogs are amazing. We found one in in a pampas grass last year and relocated it to a winter den. I'm in the Brecon Beacons this week and we have seen some great birds and plants. A pair of redstarts at Aberglasney. Red kites. A pair of yellow hammers at the Usk reservoir.

Yay, you made the thread :D

I also love nature, animals, the universe... I'm a lifelong animal lover and there's never been a moment in my life where I was not around animals. My parents live in a wildlife rich area but they keep building houses pushing out the larger animals like bobcats and the Florida panther :(

I've seen all kinds of things in person. I did more exploring when I lived in Wisconsin. In fact, where I used to live there was a forest across the street I would go walking in almost daily. Saw a lot of whitetail deer and coyotes. I've seen coyotes here too and a black bear once. Seen a few bobcats, alligators of course, they are everywhere. Snakes, lizards, turtles and tortoises, and an abundance of birds.

Darn, all my photos are on my old laptop. I'll have to dig some up. I do have this picture I took of a lunar eclipse a few years ago.

I have both a telescope and microscope :)

I will have to dig out some pictures of the fluffles that we get each year down at the neighbourhood pools. Canada goslings (this year 13 so far), Moorhen chicks and ducklings are the usual candidates.

Dad and I also encountered a young hedgehog snuffling around in the open last autumn, in the forest. It was totally unconcerned by us. We have them in our garden as well, sometimes.

Otherwise, the little fledglings are hilarious. Last year there was a baby sparrow who was failing at its flying lessons. There was an irate parent on the fence telling it off, as it kept flapping and then falling back into the Choisya bush. All while we were out there, of course. And the baby starlings trying to learn how to use the feeder...and falling off...also quite funny.

I once had a baby sparrow come in my room by accident. It misflew and ended up coming in my open window. I had to coax it out of my wardrobe, and then guide it back to the window. I often wonder what happened to it after it left my room. It would be long gone from this world now but I like to think it grew up and had a happy life and that maybe some of the sparrows living on and around the grape vine that grows under my window are its descendents.

Oh yes. About a mile from where we live there is a big expanse of nature, it's a kind of a park that was originally the grounds of something, but it's now a big nature area that people visit with their kids and stuff. We see a lot of birds and squirrels and stuff there. But we actually saw goldcrests for the first time, which was pretty cool.

Hedgehogs are so cute :lovey: @Heart Of Midnight your post prompted me to go watch several youtube videos about hedgehogs and it sounds like they would be great to have in the garden.

I see a lot of deer around here. which i like but also there are a lot of highways so it can be dangerous in the fall and winter when it get dark earlier. we have a lot of birds around. even hawks and lots of vultures. i was hoping to see some squirrels in the new neighborhood considering there are some older oaks trees. but none yet :(

also, not nature but there are quite a few farms still around with horses and cows. I like to see them just hanging out. they always look so relaxed and i want to pet them. i don't obviously.

I wish I lived where hedgehogs do, they're one of my favorite critters because they're so cute!

We have a robin nest in a shrub next to our house.  There are 4 eggs in it but I don't know if I'll get a picture or not because I don't want to disturb the parents.  My mom has had to chase away some crows that were trying to get to the nest so we're trying to keep an eye on the robins without scaring them off.

Great that a lot of stories have come here! :) It is nice to read about nature sightings from all over the world.  :lovey:

BlackCurtains, you have a really gorgeous photo of the moon! I tried a moment ago to take a picture of the moon with a cell phone camera, but it didn’t turn out good.  I’m just better off admiring it with my eyes, rather than trying to store it on a memory card.

I didn’t see the hedgehog today when I took the food. I have to take the food only when the darkness has arrived, because the crow is stealing the food from the hedgehog! It doesn’t come anymore when it’s dark. :P

A couple of days ago I heard Common Chiffchaff has arrived! It has a great and fun chiff-chaff song. In Finnish, it is called Tiltaltti.  :D
The European Pied Flycatcher has also arrived at our yard on the same day. In Finnish, it is called Kirjosieppo.

My mom checked yesterday and there are still 4 eggs in the robin's nest. :)

^ Hopefully the robin's nesting will be successful!  :)

----

I saw a fox in my garden a moment ago! :frolic: My brother had seen it one morning in his own yard and had taken a photo of it. (My brother is my neighbor.)

The hedgehog was already waiting for the food cup at nine in the evening!  I took the cup to the hedgehog at eleven o'clock. The crow was already asleep then. ^.^

There are now baby birdies in the nest.  When I got home from work I could tell that mommy robin wasn't on the nest so I snuck a peak and there were tiny birdies huddled together taking a nap.  They're still fairly naked but once they get some fuzz they'll be adorable.

The mockingbird was on the roof under my window again (I mentioned her in the smiles thread). She was singing and singing. Or he. I still need to look up if both sing...

Next time I'll take a pic :)

What does the fox say? :fox:

I went to bed rather late last night and was just about to fall asleep as I heard a fox outside. I see them pretty regularly here, and I've heard their cries before but this one was practically behind our bedroom window, screaming. :lmao: What a creepy sound they make. My cats were flabbergasted. I admit my heart was pounding for some time, too, after waking up so suddenly. Took me a second to realise where the noise was coming from, and that my cats were fine and not crying in pain. I saw the fox too, after a couple of minutes screaming it took off. I think it stopped to mark its territory on the way. :P

"Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!..."   That started ringing inside my head as I read the beginning of your writing!  :lmao:

Great observation! :iconclap: But there’s definitely a little shock to waking up to its scream just when you’re about to fall asleep!   When I first heard the fox scream, I thought now that some woman is in distress and is being beaten! But as the screaming continued the same for a long time, I realized it was an animal. The next day I listened to fox audio samples on the internet.

---

Late on Monday night, I heard for the first time this spring a cuckoo singing!  :frolic: It was very close. I heard Bittern "singing" too! My house is at least 3,109 miles from the lake. It’s amazing that the voice of a bird comes here to me nicely and loudly. :wow:

That's lovely! (Psst, I think you mean 3.109 miles - a small difference in orthographic conventions but a big difference in meaning so translating here for our Anglophone folks :D )

It was a downpour last night. It's still too early for the tree frogs. Last year there was at least one in the tree outside my bedroom window. I hope he's still there this year.

In the street I saw a black racer. It must have been flooded out of its hiding place. I didn't think to get a picture. Black racers are large but harmless black snakes. I think they are the most common snake in Florida, at least down here.

 Sorry when I have typos. I just copied that reading from the site where I went to turn kilometers into miles.
But, luckily you are here to fix and help!

----

BC, Wow, the black racer is a beautiful snake! (I looked at the pictures on the internet.) Fortunately, it is a non-venomous snake just like the grass snake here in Finland.

There are three different species of snakes in Finland; grass snake, smooth snake and common European viper.
Smooth snake is very rare and does not occur here in mainland Finland (only in Åland). Of these three, the common European viper is poisonous. There were a lot of vipers near my childhood home, but I wasn’t afraid of them. Very beautiful and interesting snake!

Hey, no worries  And I'm sorry if I sounded condescending, that wasn't my intention.

Yeah not too many snake species here! I don't think I've ever seen a grass snake or a smooth snake in wild. I have seen vipers, though. They are pretty common in our neighbourhood too, I'm always a bit wary when walking our cats here but luckily the snakes prefer to stay out of the way. I avoid the foresty areas in the spring when the snakes are small and aren't used to people or other creatures yet, I hear young snakes are the most dangerous since they are inexperienced and bite more easily. But we've lived here for seven years now and I've only seen snakes once or twice, so it's not like they're everywhere...

Here are some pics from our bike trip last weekend. Kingcups were blooming and we spotted some tiny little spruce cones!

Florida has a lot of snakes, some of them quite deadly. We also have invasive pythons from people letting their pet snakes into the wild. Some get big enough to eat alligators. We have a lot of invasive species actually, from insects to monkeys.

Beautiful photos, Griffin! What a nice trail.

Oh, really beautiful photos, Griffin! It would be nice to walk there and watch the birds with binoculars. Did you see any birds there?

---

On Thursday, after the rain stopped, I found this "guy" in the yard! :wow: It's an Ash-gray slug (Limax cinereoniger). In Finnish: Ukkoetana.
It is the largest land snail in Europe. This is only the third time I have met this snail. So beautiful! It is not a harmful creature. It does not do damage to the garden. For food, it uses decaying plant material, algae and fungi growing on the surface, and, when the opportunity arises, also animal carcasses.
I found information on the internet that it can grow up to 20 cm in length. I didn’t measure this, but it was big. :wow:

The breathing hole is on the back of the shield on the right side of the animal. It shows well in the first picture. The surface of the shield has a groove pattern resembling a fingerprint. It is shown in the second picture. The back has a ridge extending from the tip of the stern to the middle of the back. It shows up a bit in the last picture.

Wow, what an interesting looking slug! I'm planning on building a bio active terrarium and have looked at both snails and slugs to put in it.

When I lived in Wisconsin I would see slugs often in our garden. I've seen maybe three since living in Florida.

Thanks! We did see some swans and mallards at least (whooper swans and I believe one mute swan, too - they were quite far away and we didn't have binoculars).

That's one big slug! :slug:

I love empty lots. I know it's not a good idea to trespass and poke around in brown field sites, however you can get some really cool pioneer plant species that I love to look at in high summer.

the same thing happened last year with the nest by my front door. i felt so betrayed that i didn't get to say goodbye. one day they were there then they just left. i know it's irrational of me to feel that way. i thought we had something special.

last night an owl was hooting somewhere outside. my little dog woke me up barking at it.

I think there's one bird left in my roof. It keeps squawking and flapping it's wings, hopefully it will get strong enough soon to make it's own way. Bird list from the window of my house this weekend includes: grey heron, little egret, barn owl, jay, goldfinches and the usual house sparrows, blackbirds, robin, blue tits. Confusingly I saw something that looked like a redpoll but I read that they are only passage winter migrants in the UK and do not breed here, so it can't have been that. Wonderful nature is raining today for the second day in a row!

The hedgehogs haven’t been seen in a few days so I stopped feeding them. There are already so many kinds of insects to eat in nature that they can survive. :) I start feeding in the late summer, before the fall when the hedgehogs go into hibernation.
I keep water available to them all summer.

I have a Hooded Crow in the yard with four chicks. Today they kept the noise in the pine tree and followed what I was doing in the garden. Those chicks are fun birds, but they can also annoy, for example, by pecking at my summer flowers!  >_<
There are crows and their chicks in this yard every summer, I guess it is good for them to live and nest here.  :)

Poor little raccoon was walking down the road in the rain early this morning. There are raccoons in the woods who go dumpster diving in the complex  They set out no kill traps for them, but I think most raccoons are smart enough to not get caught. Apparently there are rats too, but I've never seen one. We had rats at my parent's house, from my dad feeding the birds. I opened the garage door one night (from inside the house) and there was a huge one on the table. I've also seen them on the side of the road at night.

The new neighbors called the authorities on my dad for feeding the cranes which is illegal (but to be fair, he wasn't feeding them, they would show up and eat the food later) so he stopped feeding all the birds and squirrels. They don't have rats anymore.

Yesterday, when we went over the bridge, I saw a manatee take a breath. I wonder how they are doing now? The news was covering them for a while because the heat of the water killed all the seagrass and they were starving, so in a few places the Wildlife people started feeding them romaine lettuce. They're so sensitive to change in the environment - if it's too cold, they die, if it's too hot, they die. If tourists scare them and stress them out enough, they die.

I've had encounters with them in the Gulf. They're curious and if you have something shiny on you, they want to see what it is :)

We got a massive bucket of honey from Steve's bees today. But we forgot we had lost his main sieve set, so we have to wait for a new one to arrive in the post  >_< These bees have adapted really well and are closest to the british black bees. Steve tries to go along with the bees rather than controlling them all the time. We have 4 hives currently. I have noticed so few butterflies and insects generally around this year. I find it really worrying.

Two new little ducklings and one new squeak toy (baby moorhen) at the ponds yesterday. The moorhen is from a later brood, its older siblings from the first brood were babysitting it, one was feeding it :) It's so cute when they do that.

All the little goose fluffles are now big goose adolescents with their markings starting to come in. But there is one gosling that is a lot younger than them, so I guess someone had an extra chick without us noticing :)

It seems that at least 12 of the original 13 goslings have survived to almost adulthood. There are a LOT of geese now around the ponds, chilling. :)

A baby sparrow in the garden this morning tried to take on a pigeon for some of the bread Dad put out, because he hadn't got the seed feeders up yet. You can guess who won though :)

The baby sparrows are small destruct-monsters though. They have no clue that they're too heavy for half the things they land on until they land on them.

I woke up to find one of my lupins broken this morning. I guess now we are down to the slimmer secondary spikes and the baby birds are a bit bigger than they were! I think they are feeding on the aphids though, which is great. I counted 12 baby sparrows altogether. When they first fledged they would line up in a row which was too cute.

The birds have vacated the area :( Or they are still here but not singing. I think it's too hot. Maybe they left because they knew the extreme heat was coming. They will go away when a tropical storm or hurricane is coming too.

I just saw a goldfinch eating seeds in our front garden. We deliberately used a mesh for parking and let flowers and grasses grow through it, rather than using a solid surface. This is a direct win for me and really nice to see. Not my photo:

I have a lot of birds, living so close to the forest. There is a family of magpies living in My garden. They’ve been here for years. It’s so much fun watching them and they are so creative! I also have loads of snails, not all of them I like. Because they’re eating my flowers, but I really love the big snails with houses on their backs. The kind of snails the French cooks and eats. I have them in my garden and they are so cool!

Yesterday I saw Bambi! He was just 5 meters or so away from me. Close enough that I could see his eyes. Just watching each other, and me talking. It was a truly nice experience!

aww Bambi :)

yesterday morning when i let my dog out in the backyard there was a toad who appeared to be stuck in the sprinkler cover. i tried to remove the cover with a broom but it wouldn't come off. i'm afraid of toads so i didn't want to touch it. but i couldn't just leave it there to die. i went inside for a second to get my partner and when i looked out the window it was free and just sitting on the sprinkler cover. and it hopped away. i guess they can squeeze through very small places.

I have been topping up the water bath three times a day due to the heat. Today I have seen Blue Tits, a Gold Finch, a pair/family of Green Finches and Blackbirds in the garden.

Post Merge: July 18, 2022, 11:47:36 PM

Last night I heard a clanging out in the garden and two hedgehogs were demolishing the cat biscuits. Two paws on the edge of the bowl, upending it into it's face. The other one was standing in the water bowl I put out, which is basically a disposable plastic food carton. I was pleased to see them looking happy and healthy. When I went out in the morning they had left crumbs and dribble all over the cat bowl and had pooped in the water. Ah well. Luckily it was easy to replace ready for Mr Cat.

Further update, and kind of relevant to all the people saying they wanted more animal themed ponies. I was looking up Glider, she has butterfly symbols. And I found that gliders are actually a thing:

The local canada geese came to pay us a visit last night (Tuesday). They were pulling up the clover in the strip of grass in front of our drive. This morning they were on the road island, and then at the bus stop. I'm guessing with the number that there are, it's harder to find food when its hot and the grass is all dying. They seem quite healthy though.

I think something is in the garden right now as I type. We have a mystery barrier mover, which we assume is probably a hedgehog. We've seen the pigeons do it too, but the other night one of Dad's small metal plant barriers ended up all the way onto the patio, and hooked over my petunia like they'd been playing hook a plant with it.

I often here thuds, or strange calls in the garden. I just heard a clank, so I hope that doesn't mean they've been at the barriers again.

The sparrows were sunbathing yesterday morning, but went into hiding as it got hotter. The magpie was shade hopping and looking confused by the sudden warmth.

There was a Mourning Dove in the tree this morning. All the other birds that would sing at dawn are either gone or not singing. I miss it.

The Mockingbirds are still here. When I got my mail the other day, one was on the electric metal case thingy, and as I walked past it stayed there, so I was very close to it. I said hello ^^; They remember faces and will recall if you've been nice or mean to them. I always try to be nice, of course. Same with crows.

There are nice observations about nature here again, thank you for writing them!  :grouphug:

I've been watching a bat flying around our house and garden for several nights now. I don't know if there are more of them, but they fly here every summer. Judging by their small size and shape, it or they are Northern bats (Eptesicus nilssonii). It is Finland's most common bat species.

I water the flowers at night, because of the heat of the day. Today, in the dark of the night, I almost stepped on a frog, but luckily I noticed it in time!  :frog:  ^^; I have some containers in the garden that are filled with water, maybe it goes in them to freshen up. I've mainly intended them for hedgehogs, but it's good if they help other animals too!

Thursday was a hot day, 28 degrees Celsius. Friday should also be close to 30 degrees. Then in the following days it will start to be a little cooler and there will be rain.

I am pretty sure I have seen an unusual finch called a Lesser Redpoll hanging around our garden. I've seen the male twice now, there may be a female but they are less easy to spot. I'm feeling positive that they are primarily seed eaters and the fields and verges around here seem to be well managed for winter seed. Hence also the Goldfinches I posted about before.

I saw comma butterflies over the last two days. They are large and very striking in person. Also the more Peacock and Red Admiral butterflies started coming out a few weeks ago. We live near a railway line and there are a lot of nettles and buddleja bushes locally which feed this family of butterflies (Nymphalidae).

I was just watering the flowers in the garden. The air is very humid. Heat 20 degrees Celsius. Still no thunder, but a few drops of water came while I was outside.
I stayed for a while admiring the dark clouds until I was startled when a bat flew right in front of my face!  :ack: I had an outdoor light on and it had attracted insects flying near me, so the bat didn't want me for its meal after all... unless it was a vampire! :bat:

We have had next to no butterflies this year :( Our garden is full of buddleia and such, but they've just not been here. Last year we had commas, red admirals, painted ladies, torties and peacocks but...this year it's just been a handful of whites and small torties and the odd meadow brown.

The season started so well, too, as I saw a brimstone and two orange tips.

I blame the building. They've been ripping up the old factory site, and we're all sure that's the cause. Destroying habitat. I miss the butterflies :(

We have a frog in our pond, but he seems to be on his own. We used to get spawn and babies, but not for a long time.

^ There is a mass extinction of insects taking place right now. It's mostly climate change related, but deforestation and use of pesticides are helping it along. 40% of insects are declining globally and a third are endangered. You can plant native flowers and offer a shallow dish of sugar water. It's really sad, and dangerous, since insects are responsible for almost all pollination and are a huge support block for ecosystems. Everything else will crash without insects.

We fortunately have slews of bees, some of which live in a ground nest down by our shed. They're not at all hostile. We have a lot of lavender as well as buddleia and other things, so there's plenty of pollinators here, but just a real drop on butterflies :'(

Where I live is an urban village but there is a lot of forestland nearby. The field being built on was an abandoned factory site that had grown wild, though. I hope there are butterflies in the forests.

We were visited by the geese again today, who set up camp under the tree at the end of the street. It rained a lot overnight so there were some road puddles, and they were having a great time.

...Drivers, less so. But in our neighbourhood, the geese are usually allowed to have their own way.

Now that the Ligularia stenocephala (I don't know if there is an English name for this?) have started to flower in the garden, there are many bumblebees, but much, much less bees than there were last summer. There are also fewer butterflies here than last summer. I have set up a feeding place for them, if even one beauty arrives there. On Monday there was only a wasp and ants.  :pout:

Speaking of wasps... Those creatures have made a nest in the closet on the terrace of the outbuilding! >_< I was there during the day putting flowers, and one of them almost flew right into my face! I told it, now watch where you fly! After that, I said a few nice Finnish swear words.
Fortunately, no one has gone to that closet during the whole summer! I visited it early in the spring to get supplies for the plants and there was no nest there yet.
When it's fall and the first frosts come, I'll probably have to destroy that nest, even if I don't want to kill the queen that might be sleeping there. I don't like wasps, but I don't hate them either. What should be done?  :wonder:
Title: Re: Wonderful Nature - Thread

You can knock the nest down? They'll probably move. But of course you want to be very careful and leave them alone for a while afterward because they'll be mad.

I don't like wasps at all. I'm allergic to their stings  Well, I am allergic to most insect stings and bites. I never was before I got bitten and stung by fire ants. Then I became allergic to all insects. Fire ants I won't hesitate to kill. They aren't native and they destroy other ant colonies. There is a native fire ant, but it's sting is mild compared to the RIFA (red imported fire ant).

In other nature news, this morning there were a few seagulls here. They sometimes stop by on their way to the beaches.

:) Well, that's the way I'd intend to do it, but I meant that I don't know if I'll be able to do it when the time comes. I wouldn't want to kill a hibernating queen wasp. Now I don't even go near the nest so they can be in peace and raise their larvae.
No matter how sad it is, I'll probably have to dispose of that nest because I'll need things from that closet again next summer. It's difficult to decide...  :( Fortunately, there is still a little time until winter and much more until next summer!

We have two little bee nests down by our shed but no wasp ones thankfully. We get enough of them in the vine when the grapes are ripe (that grows right under my window).

I walked up into the town park yesterday to see the little greylag goslings Mum and I saw some weeks back, climbing through the fences. They're almost grown up now - just a little bit fluffy still. There were a lot of canada geese as well, and the five ducklings Mum and I also saw are also nearly full grown mallard ducks now - not quite with all their markings but not far off getting them.

I was happy to see them all doing so well.

A Mrs Blackbird was collecting nesting material from the tree area near Asda. They often have a 2nd brood, so I guess she's getting ready for that.

Still not many butterflies, but we did see a couple of common blues yesterday.

OK the hedgehogs definitely like to trash their water and feeding bowls and poop everywhere! I can't believe what a mess they make! Like rockstars in an a hotel room! I do find it odd that they poop so near the food, a lot of animals wouldn't do this. Our cat won't share the bicsuit bowl with the hedgehogs becasue they are so messy. It's probably for the best in case they are carrying any bugs or diseases. I think I need to move thier feeding station away from the house. Anyway, we are lucky to have them and we live on a quiet road, so that's good. We just need to figure out the ettiquette.

On the night between Friday and Saturday, I was with my mother in our yard, looking to see if the Perseids ( one of the brighter meteor showers of the year) could be seen. We had gone out a little too late, so the maximum had already passed, but we did see a few.
Just before 02:00, we noticed something really bright coming in the sky from the south. It was a huge ball of light around which we could see steam. Just as if it had flown through clouds of fog, but there was no fog but a completely clear moonlit night!
It flew in the sky completely noiselessly just above our heads towards the north. I said to my mother that what the h*** was that! Maybe now we finally saw a UFO! Of course, I didn't have my camera with me outside at that moment.  >_<
Later we found out that it had been the American SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket! :wow: I've never seen anything like it! It was an amazing experience!

On the night between Saturday and Sunday, we were outside again looking at the sky. We saw a few shooting stars, but our admiration for them was short-lived because a bat almost came on me! :ack: Apparently it was chasing some insect that was flying near me in the dark. I was startled because earlier in the summer I had read the news about a woman who was bitten by a bat. That's why I didn't stay longer in the yard. :snicker:

i've been seeing bats in the late evening. i love bats because they eat mosquitos. but i can't have the dogs out when there are bats. also i'm going to need to make sure they're not in the attic. there is an oak tree in the neighbor's yard to maybe they're in there. i need to get some binoculars so i can see more animals and birds.

Yesterday when i was out with the dogs a butterfly flew over to the fence and stayed a while. it's nice to look at nature when i'm stressed out. it reminds me that most of the stuff i'm stressed about is unimportant and the world goes on.

I saw an orange anole :whoa:

They do tend to come in a variety of earthy colors but I've never seen one a bright orange. I think they can change their pigment a little so maybe it was sitting on some of the orangish mulch. It wasn't all orange, just a stripe down it's back, the rest was brown. But it really stood out. It was in the grass/weeds/plant debris that's next to my stairs and I noticed it when I came home yesterday.

There's been an egret hanging out in the yard behind the mailboxes. It flies past my window every morning and lands by the tree. There must be a stream behind the bushes or something.

I've become a bee whisperer.

We have a lot of bees in our garden, because Dad has a whole ton of lavender and they love it. We also have a couple of nests around by the shed, of a type of bumble that are not particularly aggressive, and we don't interfere with them.

So yesterday I was about to head out to water the basket and the front tub, when I did a double take. Sitting ON THE KEY in the front door was a fuzzy little bee. I swear it was trying to work out how to turn the key in the lock, because it was butting its head against the key. I got some tissue and a pot expecting to have a fight with it to get it out, but it came quite placidly onto the tissue, and then sat quietly while I took it outside and put it on one of the plants.

This morning, I was woken up by a different bee in my room. I very rarely have bees in my room - wasps are more common - but this one was making a racket at the window asking to be let out. So I opened the window and out it went.

Two bees in 24 hours. No bees were harmed in the making of these escape routes. O.o.

I love bees, they're very cute and smart. But we did have one earlier in the year who was hilarious. It was a large bumble and was very drunk on nectar. We were trying to do some planting and this bee kept crashing into what we were doing. I'd move it up the garden and it'd come back, walking up the grass like it owned the place. This went on multiple times until I picked it up in a plant pot and moved it to the herb garden. I expected it to climb or fly out and go on with its life, but no - it was still sitting inside the plant pot when we'd finished o.O. Too drunk to fly, apparently. We let it out to roam around the herb garden.

While I'm on the subject of weird bugs, did anyone know woodlice can apparently not only swim but also breathe underwater?

I watered our climbing plant tower - I always check the tray for insects before I fill it, just in case. This time, after I filled it, this massive slug suddenly came out from underneath, poked its head above the water. So I plucked it out and took it to the front to put somewhere more appropriate. When I went back, I found three or four woodlice swimming UNDER the water. They must have been under there a good ten or fifteen minutes. One had climbed out on its own, leaving a water trail behind it. The others didn't do anything until I put in a leaf, and then they climbed onto it to get out.

If I was under water for 15 mins, I'd be in trouble. The water was an inch deep, which is pretty deep for a woodlouse to be stuck in. But they were all fine. O.o.

Woodlice are isopods which are crustaceans :) Terrestrial isopods need a damp space to live happily and can stay underwater for a few hours. A lot of people keep them as pets (I've been looking into getting some, just need money) or keep them as a clean up crew for amphibian and reptile habitats. They come in all different colors! They're lovely little creatures

I found a small dead lizard in the closet :( I don't remember seeing a live one so I guess it came in through the door and my cat chased it down the hallway.

I discovered a new species of butterfly yesterday!  A giant swallowtail butterfly.  Apparently it does live in the eastern United States, but I've never seen one before.  I'd post a video from my phone but I don't know how.
Also, Blackcurtains, last year I had the Florida state butterfly too(I forget it's name)!  I live in north Georgia so I was surprised.  We also have non-native Joro spiders taking up residence, and yesterday I had to save a skipper and a yellow swallowtail from the webs.

Gator, Nice butterfly sighting! That Giant swallowtail butterfly looks really wonderful! (I looked at images on google.)
It is probably related to the Common yellow swallowtail (Papilio machaon) that lives in Finland. They have a somewhat similar appearance.

I think the wasp's nest I mentioned earlier has quieted down. I haven't seen any movement there. But, in the attic of my house there is that movement!  :freak: I have been outside for several days watching how numerous wasps go in and out! And the most disgusting thing for someone who is afraid of wasps is that the sounds they make can be heard loudly in my bedroom all the time!
My laptop and its table are just below this nest.. I hope the roof and wall structures are strong and these critters will never get through there!  :yikes: I want the frosts and winter to come soon!

Wasps are still crawling in the attic.  They haven't come through the wall or the ceiling yet. Fortunately, listening to music covers the sounds they cause and I can sometimes forget those creatures completely.

:frolic: I recently looked out the window and saw several silent lightning that occurs in thunderclouds, i.e. they are not ground lightning. (Is there another English name for them?) Autumn is already starting, so maybe it won't be long before the nest goes quiet. The weather has cooled radically and the summer heat is gone. From the end of the week, the temperature can drop to 4 degrees Celsius at night.
When I can't see them flying from their nest anymore, and I can't hear their sounds and it's already been freezing at night, I'm going to go look in the attic.

Thanks for telling me another name for this weather phenomenon.

@LAW Are the wasps bothering you around the outside of your house at all?
They don't bother me at all outside in the garden or yard. At least not yet. Let's see, now that autumn is progressing, the wasps run out of work and food from nature. Then they get frustrated and angry. Will they then let me go in peace..
I've been wondering if I should put something for them to eat somewhere in the corner of the garden to keep them calmer. I have food available for the butterflies (a mixture of overripe fruit, jam and red wine vinegar), but luckily the wasps haven't come there at least yet.

I killed 12 wasps in my bedroom today!
Most of them couldn't fly, they just stayed in place on the floor, on the chair and in the window. When I approached them, they were immediately alert, so they were not in such poor condition as I thought at first.
I was in the shower last night and therefore left the bedroom window open until morning. In the morning I noticed some of these creatures and in the evening the rest when I came back home. In the morning I had closed the window and I thought there wouldn't have been more than the few I killed then...  I believe they all came through the window, even though it has a window with a mosquito net, the window frames have two small round holes through which these critters fit in. I don't think they have broken the wall yet, because now the windows are still closed and no more of them have been seen. I did think of putting tape on the wall/ceiling over all kinds of gaps where the sounds of their critters are heard. I don't want to wake up to 10,000 wasps taking over my bedroom!  :scared:  Even now, I'm constantly looking at the floor to see if there is a wasp crawling anywhere. I had one of those over my wool socks when I got home, but luckily I wasn't wearing those socks at the time! I hope that winter will come soon!

They can be a 'bit much'. The picture I posted is a wasp trap, you put fruit juice and water in it and let it ferment a little, then they fly in and drown. A bit sad, but tidy and effective. A couple of honeybees followed DH indoors after the combs of honey he had stolen harvested and I just went out to the shops, I couldn't really relax knowing they were in the house. However, they all perform some sort of ecosystem function, and the bees give us honey so I guess we have to be grateful.

I hope next year has better rainfall and hopefully turns into a better year for butterflies. I have dog violets, black medick and common vetch in my garden as ground cover in a lot of the awkward areas. I found this websiite and saw that I have quite a few other plants on here too https://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/foodplants.php?style=butterfly (https://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/foodplants.php?style=butterfly) Some of them like wild thyme, everlasting pea, Viola, ribwort plantain, wild strawberry are really easy to grow and quite attractive. I don't have garlic mustard which I think would be nice, I think you can eat it as well.

Post merge:

Sorry for the double post but I just discovered this really cool bird! It's called a Shoebill and it lives in swampy parts of Africa. It has a lot of personality.

I'd try to divert them from your house, so feeding them in the garden is a good idea, I think.

Having just one wasp in my bedroom (or anywhere) would scare me so much. I'm really allergic to them, so much so I carry an EpiPen. There have been smallish somethings (hornets maybe?) sticking around my front windows. I think they are either looking for a nesting site or maybe the reflection of the sun off the white aluminum makes them think it's water.

At my parent's house yesterday I went out on the lanai and saw a huge dragonfly in the pool. I picked it up but it was dead already :(

^ Raccoons are cute and smart animals.  :)

----

The wasps in the attic are still doing well in their nest and we have been able to be at peace with them. Every day they still manage to fly out of their nests on a foraging journey and there are still a lot of them! It hasn't been cold enough for them to die off yet.
A few have wandered into the bedroom from a possibly existing hole in the wall or ceiling, but I have killed them either with a fly swatter or they have flown directly into the glue trap in the window. Besides these wasps, a few new acquaintances have wandered into the room! A species of beetle called Metoecus paradoxus (also known as the wasp nest beetle and eyelash bug) and a larva of a species of flower fly called Volucella inanis! :wow:
Both of them are parasitic in social wasp nests. They are not harmful to humans. I have rescued and taken all the beetles and larvae to the garden.  :)

Here, as a spoiler, is one of those flower fly larvae. I didn't want to put it out there in case someone didn't like them. It was a bit disgusting at first, but after getting to know them better, they are interesting and funny creatures.

That's so weird that you say that about the wasp parasites... last night I was watching animal videos and they had a guy removing parasite larvae from wasps. They also showed a botfly extraction on a baby bird. The wasps and bird must've felt so much better after getting them out.

It's a funny coincidence that you had watched videos about similar insects. ^.^

Yes, I've also been startled every time a wasp has come flying into the bedroom, especially if I wake up to it buzzing!  :freak: They are already a bit "clumsy", their flight is no longer as energetic as in the summer and they are just trying to get towards the light source, luckily not towards me! :whew:
Outside, I avoid going into the backyard past the end wall of the house above which the nest is located. From there, they can attack aggressively.

It's not long since today I saved two larvae from spiders here in my bedroom! Both were close, but at a different point. In both small webs there was a tiny little spider packing a larva in its web. How could it be possible that they had fallen prey to spiders at the same time?
After rescuing them, I started cleaning the larger spider webs off them. I succeeded quite well in that, and especially the second larva started crawling very briskly. The other was motionless, but alive. I took them out to the garden, where they can continue their journey.
( I do clean my bedroom too, but I have let two spiders live here with us in peace. There are spiders in other parts of the house too, unless the cats have caught them all.  I like spiders and they are beneficial insects.)

I've kept spiders in the house before. I don't have any (that I know of) here because pest control comes every month.

Thursday morning I had to kill 4 wasps that had entered the bedroom. :( I still don't know where they got here. I taped off a few spots on the ceiling and wall. We'll see if that stops more of them coming tomorrow morning.

:ack: And just now I had to kill one more, so those tape spots don't help... Too bad I didn't have time to see where it came from. There was only a buzzing sound and I quickly ran to the fly swatter!

I have taped almost all the holes I can find in the bedroom and only one wasp (per day) has entered the room. I wish I could find that last route where they come from.
Autumn has not yet been cold enough to kill them and there are enough apples on the trees in the neighbors to feed them for a long time to come. :pout: An autumn storm is forecast for Thursday and the temperatures will rise even warmer than they are now. That warming and windiness is a good thing in terms of electricity consumption.  :bigups:

Me again! :hiya:

It's been several days without wasps in the bedroom. :woot: I have strengthened the tapings. From behind them, there has been some rustling for a while, until it has stopped and it's completely quiet again.

But...

The wasps have found their way downstairs and the cats like them very much!  :freak: :scared: Fortunately, I or someone else from my family has always been downstairs when those critters have appeared to crawl on the floor or fly towards the windows. Cats have never managed to catch them before us.  :whew: But, this is not a good situation at all... You can't always be at home and then you always have to fear when you get home that one of the cats has suffocated to death after being stung by wasps.
Winter come, come soon!
My mother made traps for wasps from bottles with honey water, but they haven't gone there yet. Those traps are here inside the house. I have also taped the holes in the ceiling and walls from the hallway, stairs and toilet.
Today I was in a hurry to get out of the toilet when I heard the buzzing of a wasp near me! But I didn't see it anywhere...

Oh no! My dog was stung by a wasp in the face once and we had to rush him to the emergency vet. They gave him Benadryl and told us to keep some in the house if it ever happened again. But I don’t know if you can give Benadryl to cats.

Is it possible the wasps are living in your walls? I never heard of such a problem like this. Does it happen every year?

I haven’t seen much. The squirrels have come back and there are a lot of mockingbirds around. I saw a bunny one evening too. My parents lost the pool cage in the storm, so they have been finding things in the pool. Mostly dragonflies and moths but one day there was a snake.

Our cat gets stung regularly by wasps because we feed him outside and they seem to have learnt where his feeding station is. I hope he doesn't become allergic one day. So far he just gets annoyed but then he's fine later. The rose bush in our hedge has made red hips and there are horse mushrooms and parasols at the end of our garden. I saw a pair of Long Tailed Tits in the willow tree today. The hornets are still active.

I rescued a small moth from my kitchen. It didn’t want to fly away though. When I blew in it gently it came back and landed on me. I had to let it go off the balcony and it finally flew away.

I have hydrocortisone tablets in the medicine cabinet for the cats and myself in case we get stung by a wasp.
So far so far everything has gone well and we haven't been stung.  :) One of my cats is really excited with these critters and always sticks his nose in them. Fortunately, we have managed to stop the game and kill the wasps.

They haven't come downstairs or upstairs for two days.  :relaxed:
As I write this, there is a rustling and buzzing sound coming from two different corners of the bedroom, but I have blocked the holes so they shouldn't get in here anywhere.
I believe the nest is located in the attic, but some of them have started wandering between the walls towards the light and heat coming from the rooms. :wonder: Only a few wasps fly in front of the house outside during the day. Maybe the rest of them will soon die too...

I saw three bee species in the garden this evening without really looking. The honey bees are foraging on the asters. I wasn't sure that would work but I'm pleased it did, so I'll be dividing and putting those around the back of the garden next year. At the moment there is little forage left apart from ivy.

As soon as I was able to boast that the wasps had stopped coming downstairs, now they have gotten there again from somewhere.  >_<
Recently one crawled at the top of the stairs, on the floor in the dark! :scared: Fortunately, the cats were sleeping elsewhere and my husband noticed it. Before this one wasp was "sitting" in the downstairs toilet. It was cleaning its antennas.
I still feel bad about killing them, but I have to do it so that they don't sting my cats.  :( A beautiful and interesting insect.

It's freezing outside! Lovely! The thermometer shows -2 °C.  :frolic: I've been waiting for the frosts so much and at night like this it's the best. Not just because of the wasps, but because I love it! It should also be freezing on the night between Monday and Tuesday.

That sounds so perfect! How lovely. The magnolia tree in our garden has dropped around half of it's leaves now. But the oak trees in the spinney and the cherry trees are still fairly green, so I guess we are still waiting for a real frost.

That joy didn't last long!  :pout: The temperatures have been +10 °C again. Even at night time. But it's been raining almost every day and I like that. There is already snow in northern Finland, but here in the south we will have to wait a long time for it.

The wasps have not been seen outside the house anymore, but today one flew indoors again.  :pout:

A couple of days ago we had a real scare, because one of my cats had caught a wasp and carried it in his mouth to the kitchen! :freak: The cat dropped the creature from its mouth to the floor, then shook its head and ran away. I killed that creature with a fly swatter.
I screamed in panic to my mother; "Now that wasp stung Hector in the mouth!" The cat was hiding on top of the wardrobe and licking its lips. I got the cat in my arms and mom gave me half a hydrocortisone tablet. I managed to give it to Hector and he swallowed it well! I've never once had to medicate that cat, it's a wonder that it was successful on the first try!
We searched the phone for the number of an on-call veterinary clinic, but luckily we never had to call them because nothing serious happened to the cat. Its face or mouth did not swell and breathing was normal. After a few hours, it continued its normal cat life again.
I believe that the wasp might have tried to sting the cat in its mouth, but it didn't quite succeed. Or it was biting with its jaws, its stick-like feet were tickling, or it just tasted really bad to Hector, which made it shake its head and lick its lips. :wonder:

:whew:

I'm so glad Hector was okay! Good job giving him the medication. Giving meds to cats is hard.

The same thing here happened with the weather. It was nice and cold at night and during the day it was cool, but then the temps went back up to the high 80s and I had to close my windows and put the AC back on.

This morning after I fed Aster I sat down at my desk. It was still semi-dark outside. I keep my blinds halfway up in the living room and that window faces the street. I was looking out the window and I thought I saw a squirrel in the road. It wasn't moving, but looked like it was sitting up. I thought it had been hit by a car and was stunned. I was going to go out and see it and try to help. That's when I got up and closer to the window and noticed it was just a stain on the road  ^^;

I took a picture. You can see how I thought it was a squirrel, right?!

Yes, it does look a bit like a squirrel.  At least if you look quickly and it's dark.

---

We got a victory over the wasps!  :woot: They are finally dead!
On the last day of October, one large wasp flew outside the kitchen window. I believe it was the queen. It was there for a while until it flew away, perhaps to look for its wintering place.
It's already quiet inside the house too, but I'll let the tapes stay in place until probably next year. In January I could rip them off.
Maybe now we could take it easy and finally go to the toilet in peace, and not have to constantly look at our feet and other places where those creatures liked to be. And there is no need to run after the cats to investigate what they have found again. :relaxed:

Beautiful photos HoM!

We have had some tree work done today, a willow and a yew. They are both native species here so I thought I would mention them. They are the last two trees we needed to work on and were too big for us to deal with.

The willow is an osier willow, cracked into three substantial and (now) equal sized trunks which produce whips every year. We had the most recent large trunk pollarded to 6ft so we can still collect the whips and use them to make plant supports etc. It had hornets in it this year so hopefully they won't come back again (sorry hornets). The yew is an Irish yew so is upright in form and possibly slightly more golden in colour. It split due to storm damage so we had the main trunk cut back to about 3ft to regenerate from a clean cut. It's already sprouting from the bottom and sides so I'm sure it will be great in a few years.

I can hear the racoon having a fit :( I sounds like he's fighting but I don't hear another animal. Maybe they put out a cage and trapped him and he's freaking out. I don't know, I can't see anything since it's 1am. I don't like the sounds he's making. It doesn't sound good :(

edit: I don't see a trap. But the way into the woody area slopes down so maybe there is one in there. I need to get my mail and I'll take a closer look.

Artemesia's Garden, thank you.
On Saturday, I took new snow pictures from the yard. It's snowed a lot! :stunned:  Fortunately, it's light snow, so it won't affect the electricity, and at least it won't damage the trees yet. Then we would probably be in trouble if the thermometer showed plus degrees!

BC, Did you find any signs of a struggle or a trap?
In Finland, the raccoon dog doesn't have a beautiful voice (grunts, whines, howls, doesn't bark) and it is a relative of the raccoon, so I would think that they certainly have a similar voice.

In my old place of residence, in the countryside, they used to visit our bird feeder to eat the seeds that fell on the ground, even in winter, although they usually hibernate. In the summer, the raccoon dog couple even brought their little puppies to our yard to eat old fallen seeds and the sprouts that grow from them.  Such cute furballs! (Even though they are harmful animals for Finnish nature.) While following them, we could hear a lot of different sounds that were like something from a horror movie!  If I remember, I can post pictures of them here sometime.

I didn't see a trap when I checked my mail but there isn't garbage strewn about the mailbox center anymore, so maybe he was trapped and they took him away by the time I went out. I haven't heard anything since. I hope he was released in a nice area.

The racoons in Florida are very small compared to their northern brethren, as are a lot of common animals. The cows here are small too, though there is a small farm and they have a longhorn bull and he's giant

I would love to see a picture of the racoon dogs! I think they're so cute

The racoon is alive and well. There has been garbage strewn around the mailboxes again. Today there is quite a lot! I have no idea why he was making those noises that night. I am positive it was a racoon, they have a distinctive voice. I'm glad he's okay though :)

A logging company came the other day and dug up the stumps and turned over roots from the trees that didn't survive the hurricane (yes, they are still cleaning up after it, you still see mounds of debris and furniture on the side of the roads). My tree is officially gone. No stump, no roots. They did save the bushes that were planted around it though. That's good for the lizards. I feel sorry for the birds.

What gorgeous photos, Beldarna! I wish we had that much snow! Do you live in the northern part of the country? I love snow but here in Southern Finland it's getting quite unpredictable. We rarely get snow that stays for more than a couple of days until late December or early January, but so far January and February can be expected to be white even here on the coast. This winter we suddenly got a lot of snow at the end of November, and a white Christmas. But after that it's been kind of on and off.

H.O.M. you seem to have plenty of snow as well! And omg those raccoon dogs! I've never seen so many, they are usually loners like foxes, aren't they?

I went for a hike today with a couple of friends/colleagues today and it started snowing! We now have a thin layer, I hope it won't melt right away.

The mound of rocks is an iron age burial site (NB Iron Age in Finland = up to 1100s or even 1200s). This is actually the route I often take on my walks but I'd never stepped away from the path to find this site!

There should be a larger Bronze Age burial site close by as well, we couldn't find it unfortunately as we didn't have any accurate maps. The one shown in the photo could be found with Google maps, which is pretty neat.

There may be more snow on Monday because a blizzard has been forecast for that time!  :frolic: I hope it would snow even more over there too, because February is just coming. It's not spring time yet.  :)

That was the first and probably the last time for me to see so many raccoon dogs eating at the same time. I believe that was a very rare situation. :wonder: I would think they are quite hermits. They accept their spouses and their puppies, but usually if someone outside the family has come to eat at the same time, a fight breaks out. Raccoon dog politely dodges the badger and disappears back into the forest. At least this is what I observed at our old place of residence, when we lived in the countryside, where raccoon dogs and badgers were guests in the yard almost every night. Oh how I miss those times, the forest animals and that place...
Here, where I currently live, I have only seen one raccoon dog once. This area is home to a fox who apparently is "the king" here and keeps the raccoon dogs away.

Great photos of a great place!  :wow: :ohyeah: Back then, when I lived in the countryside, there were also two areas near my home where there are ancient remains from the Iron Age. One area has a grave area and a residential area in a field (similar piles of stones)and in another area there is a hill is burial-ground. A sword with a bronze handle was found in 1911 when the stone piles were being destroyed on that hill. During the inspection, a cremation field cemetery from the Viking and Crusade era and two burial graves from the Crusade era were found at the site. There is one fine cupstone near the hill of which I may have photographs.

According to the information on the internet, the first mentioned has 15 such piles of stones and a possible residential area. In connection with one of the Iron Age mounds, there was also the remains of a building. Today, the area is mostly uncultivated fallow land, and some of it is still used for grazing. Some of the mounds are on the summer cottage plot and a couple of mounds are in the cultivated field area. The whole area was a field until a few decades ago, and a lot of stones from the field have been thrown into the mounds. In addition, mounds of rubble have been destroyed by clearing.  :( I don't have any photos from that area, even though I often passed by it to the forest and the lake.

Yes I do.. or more in the middle of the north perhaps, same lattitude as Vaasa actually, we have a ferry that goes between my city and Vaasa. But we do have the midnightsun in the summer and snow and Northern Lights in the winter :).

It's so sad with the no snow in the south nowadays. Like in the 1650's Sweden and Denmark were at war and the Swedish army marched accross the ice towards Denmark. That sort of walk over is not possble these days as the sea never freeze and if snow falls in the south of Sweden it comes as little as in your picture Griffin. But we have less snow here as well. Scientist has concluded that our winter is about 16 days shorter than it used to be 20 years ago :(.

I love reading about your burial grounds! The history buff in me sits here with a bowl of popcorn.

It's full moon time and I'm not sleeping, because I've been running around outside even though it's night... Well, there aren't many hours until morning, but on Sundays you can sleep for a long time.  :relaxed:

I tried to take a photo of the moon, but I was unsuccessful. I have also been looking at the starry sky, but I have not seen a comet. Just when the sky is clear, it is weakly visible.  :pout: I've been trying to look for it with binoculars. I also have a telescope, but it's somewhere in the attic. On the night between Sunday and Monday, there was a chance to see the northern lights even as far as southern Finland.
I looked up at the sky for a while at eleven o'clock and saw a green calm northern light. I tried to take photos of it, but I didn't succeed.  -_-
My brother did send a photo of the beautiful northern lights (there are visible green and reddish colors) and it annoys me a bit, but I won't tell him. :pout: :P He lives next door to me, but he has a much darker yard than I do. He doesn't have a street lamp near the yard. How could I make that lamp go dark?  :pout:

I've seen some stunning pictures and video of the Northern Lights taken lately. I'm sorry yours didn't turn out.

White Ibis have been visiting the last few days :)

Also, the other night at 3am I saw two racoons getting a snack from the garbage. They were sharing everything nicely until they ran off and a much larger racoon came to the scene.

White Ibises are great looking birds. :) This bird species does not exist in Finland, but a Finnish glass artist Oiva Toikka has made glass birds. :) He made them in several different colors, but here's a link to the white one: https://www.bukowskis.com/en/lots/926489-oiva-toikka-oiva-toikka-white-ibis-for-stockmann-signed-o-toikka-nuutajarvi

We have several kinds of ibis :) There are black ibis and scarlet, which are a brilliant pink/red color. We also have the giant ibis, I believe, but I've never seen one in person.

Tonight I could watch from the kitchen window how the hares fought under the yard birch. I had taken a lot of oats for them, so maybe they have spring battles going on... after all, March has already started. :)

The owls' spring calls have also started, but I haven't had time to go on a nocturnal owl trip to listen to them yet. visitors can't see pics , please register or login

One night, my mother, who works at night, had the opportunity to listen to the calls of a couple of tawny owls (Strix aluco) from the woods near the parking lot of the workplace.

I have noticed a few signs of spring. Blackbirds sing in the morning twilight, willow cats (is this the right word/name for these beauties?) and today I saw two whooper swans in the field! :frolic:

Ponybookworm, lovely pictures! :) The daffodils are blooming and the buds of the bushes have opened!
:cold: Here in Finland we still have snow and ice. On Friday it rained and it melted the snow a little, but by Sunday the weather forecast has promised that winter will return, which means that the progress of spring will stop here for a while. It doesn't bother me, because I love winter!

Bakana, don't get too close to the mute swan because it might peck you! ;) When my brother was little, an aggressive mute swan pecked him on the arm so that it got a big bruise! :wow:

Those pics are so cute!

I love that you guys have swan (swans?). I don't think I've ever seen one outside of a zoo. I know the US does have them, around New England I think.

Yesterday when I was going to visit my mom, as we crossed the bridge in the car, there was a feeding frenzy of little silver fish jumping out of the water trying to avoid whatever was underneath them, and birds flying down and grabbing them. I've seen the same thing a few times and once when I was swimming the same type of fish passed by me and they were jumping out of the water

I have visited the lake a couple of times, which is located just a few kilometers from my home. On Friday I saw whooper swans (pictures of it on IG) and now on Sunday I got to admire the arrival of a couple of Canada geese at the lake! They flew right over me and landed near me in the water. It was great to listen to them cackling. There were other pairs of geese cruising here and there in the air, and those who had already landed cackled loudly at them. Maybe they announced that this place is already booked, go somewhere else.
I have a few pictures that I will put at least on the IG side and maybe some here as well.

There were seagulls here in the parking lot behind my apartment. They must have found food or something. Occasionally, I hear them but I didn't know they stopped to land. I'm about 2 miles from the beach, so not too far away, but still it was kind of odd to see them in the lot. There were about 5.

Spring has taken many steps forward again and the snow continues to melt. Now, a few warm days are forecast for this week, but next week is expected to be cooler. There has even been some talk about the return of winter, but I don't believe in that.

My mother and I have seen coltsfoot flowers, finches, northern lapwings, woodpigeons, coots, etc.
AND on Tuesday, one of my favorite signs of spring arrived in the yard: The hedgehog!  :frolic:

I had first found the hedgehog's poo and when I was about to post a photo of this on Instagram, the hedgehog walked in the yard!  :freak:
I sneaked over to it and started taking pictures with my phone camera. The photos turned out crappy like this one below, but the video shot was a little better and I put it on IG.  :)

This morning there was a mockingbird in the road, I think she was eating gravel. Anyway, from the nearby bush four fat fledglings came out and went to her. They were so adorable! All four hopping over to meet mom :inlove: Then she corralled them into the bush again and flew up to the rooftop and then somewhere else. The nest is in a palm tree by the bush. I watched her defend it against a scrub jay multiple times. I'm glad the babies made it, and there are four! I hope they stay safe with that loose cat out there, and inconsiderate people.

A little while later a man parked in the road and walked up to the bush and threw something into it! I couldn't tell what it was, gum maybe.

Now I'm watching people pass by the bush, knowing the four babies are there. It's kind of a busy area. Maybe mom will move them somewhere else.

The hedgehog still visits my yard every night. Usually at five in the morning it eats cat food that I have already put out on a plate many hours earlier. Now I'm just worried about it's survival because it's freezing at night. Last night it was -3 degrees below zero. We'll see how low the thermometer goes tonight.
Even though I love these cold spring nights and days, I hope for slightly warmer weather for the hedgehog.

Birch trees are slowly starting to turn green. Every spring, it always looks strange and new at first, when everywhere starts to turn green. Usually pretty soon after Midsummer I start to get tired of it and start looking forward to autumn. :P

we had a big storm come through last night and a fledgling bird was knocked out of the tree in my backyard. the other birds are trying to help it. i'm not sure if i should do something. for now i'm keeping the doggies inside. i don't know if i can help it. and i don't want to touch it.
Title: Re: Wonderful Nature - Thread
Post by: BlackCurtains on May 06, 2023, 05:32:23 AM
If it's a fledgling, it'll be fine. The parents are taking care of it, even if it's on the ground. They will guide it to a bush or hedge or something. Is there a fence around your yard?
Title: Re: Wonderful Nature - Thread
Post by: Beth3346 on May 06, 2023, 06:43:24 AM
Update: the fledgling isn't in the yard anymore so i think it managed to fly off. my dog wanted to go out so i went outside to see if the bird was still there. it was. so i went to get some gloves because i though maybe i could help it get somewhere higher. when i came back it was gone. i have a fence around the yard so either it flew out or went under the fence. i like birds but mainly from a distance so i'm glad everything seems ok.

Title: Re: Wonderful Nature - Thread
Post by: BlackCurtains on May 06, 2023, 09:43:27 AM
Oh :( Well, you could try and catch it using a large towel or blanket. You can use the towel to corral it in the corner and then throw the towel on it. The parents will be upset and might divebomb you, but you'll be okay! Then just grab the baby in the towel and take it outside the fence. If you can let it go near a bush or hedge that would be best.

there aren't really any mature bushes around the house. it's new construction so everything is still growing in. the birdie seems strong and was able to jump to the bottom rung of the fence. i put some stuff out for it to hop on. a ladder and a patio chair. if it can just get to the top of the fence it can hop over to the tree. it's home is a pretty old oak tree. the fence is literally built around the tree so it can just walk onto the tree from the fence. i'm keeping the dogs inside for now so birdie can have quiet to get back home.

it's on the smaller ladder so it's at least making it's way up higher.

Update: i think it worked it's way back into the tree. it's not on either ladder and i didn't see it anywhere in the yard. so hopefully little birdie made it's way home.

I spent a good amount of time in the garden this morning, and have rescued a beetle from drowning and a bee and a hoverfly from the greenhouse. But the moment of the day was the little blue butterfly that was stuck in the greenhouse, who settled itself down on my arm quite happily and allowed me to take it out to the flowers. It was quite settled there, which was nice.

Also saw a comma and an orange tip butterfly today, which is awesome.

Awww... I love little froggies.

I was removing poison ivy from the side of the house (with heavy gloves) and a 4-inch pink snake slid through my fingers.  It was actually pretty but I was shocked.  It almost got thrown away.  It went into a little pile of leaves and I could see it rustling around in there.  That side of the house gets too wild.

Heart of Midnight, I dont know, maybe.. probably..? I can't find any information of it. It's high up on a mountain and from a small distance it looks like two huge rocks has fallen against each other and are leening on each other creating that cave and there are several other rocks surrounding them. I guess they've been like that since the ice age and it makes a great shelter so I would say that people have used it through all ages :).

I keep trying to get photos from my phone but it is still misbehaving. Sigh. Mum and I have taken some beautiful walks this year as well.

Completely different subject, but this morning I was inspected by some baby sparrows. One sat on my quarterlight window and peered down at me, while another hopped along my windowsill, intermittently pecking at the grape vine tendrils and peering in my window.

Some years back, a baby sparrow that looks just like them did end up accidentally flying into my room, so I kept my side windows closed today just in case. But with the curious little one peeking in the window (even if it's probable he couldn't see me), I like to think that these are descendants of that one who have been told the family legend about the Wardrobe and the Human o.O.

Yesterday it was naughty starling fledglings. Today, sparrows.

We also had a visit from some geese and their goslings at our local pools. Our own pairs didn't have babies this year (rumours are the Council were involved, don't know if that's true but grr if they were...
Spoiler
Some years ago the Council smashed the eggs and got a massive backlash from residents. But some spoiled and hysterical dog owners like to take their pooches down to the ponds without leads and then claim that their dog is threatened by angry geese trying to protect their young. It's a lot of junk but unfortunately our local Councillors are of the dog persuasion and think the geese are a problem. They're not a problem. The dog owners are. End rant.

But there were three pairs, 19 goslings in all. They walked about a mile to our pools. I guess someone told them on the goose grape vine that there was empty space and free food here. ;)

The lime hawk-moth (Mimas tiliae) came to meet me in my "plant box"! :wow:
We had just finished pouring new soil there, and this popped up! It might have been straightening its wings in the shelter of chocolate mint or strawberry leaves. Fortunately, my mother noticed it in time so that it wasn't buried in the soil or otherwise damaged! I took it in my hand and it continued to vibrate its wings, so it had apparently just hatched from its cocoon a while ago. I was surprised by how stinging its legs were, as if tiny needles had been inserted into my skin! Also, the power of the wings was incredibly powerful! Like a mini fan! After taking the pictures, I went to lay it on the leaf of the fern where it was left in peace to continue its life. Later in the evening I went to see, but it had already moved on.
I've met something similar once before, but it's been almost ten years since then. I then found it encased and put it in a glass jar to develop. A similar moth was born from it and I set it free.  :)

What great pics! I love the bees and the moth :inlove:

A mourning dove has been hanging around my balcony. She was up in the little ledge above the pillar, I think she's considering making a nest there :D

Thanks everybody!  ^.^

I was outside at three in the morning today and "chased" a large moth with my camera that was fluttering by the flowers. But I didn't manage to reach it. It would be nice to get a picture of them also with the flowers.

Yesterday I got heckled by a magpie, who clattered into my window, squawked at me and then flew off.

Meanwhile the baby sparrows are squeaking away and invading every part of the garden they can find. Yesterday they jumped into the marjoram and you couldn't see them except when a head occasionally popped up. They went all over my radishes and through the flower tubs but didn't do any damage.

It's amazing what a little ecosystem a garden is generally, but they seem to be having fun in it at present.

The grape vine is trying to get in my room as per usual. It hasn't quite reached the quarterlight yet but it's working on it.

...As I type this one of the baby sparrows has discovered the buddleia.

I've been watching a mockingbird doing flips in the air and playing chicken with the cars that go by. At first I thought it was a female that was trying to lure something away from her nest, but after looking it up, it's most likely a male. He might be putting on a show for other males in the area to say that he is awesome and fearless and look at me.

I took some video but of course, he stopped doing the really neat flips after I started filming.

^ Why does it always happen that when you start filming wildlife, they almost immediately stop or disappear?!  :pout:  That often happens to me too!

---

Some measuring worm was found in the grass yesterday. I almost stepped on it! I took it in my hand for a moment to photograph it and then let it continue on its way among the plantain lilies.

(I hope I have been able to find the correct English names for these species. It's sometimes quite a laborious search.)

Today it happened for the first time..we hit a bird with our car.  :wail: It was a mallard (female).
Everything happened so quickly that at first I thought the car had broken down, when after a loud bang my mother braked and stopped on the side of the road. From the side mirror, I could see the road behind and there was a mallard quivering its wings. In the back of the car, I only found a snow brush and some stick, which I took with me when I ran to see the bird. When I got to it, luckily, it was already dead. Its neck was broken. It would have been a really difficult and painful situation if I had had to end that life on the other end of the snow brush with a hard plastic ice scraper! But it would have been necessary to do it if it had remained alive and writhing in pain after the collision.
Now that there is bird flu in Finland, I didn't touch it with my hands. I moved it out of the way into the grass with the help of a snow brush, I checked again that the signs of life had gone out of this beautiful bird and we left sad and still a little shocked towards home.

I washed my hands and used the kitchen towel to dry them, then I brushed my teeth. When I set the bottle of mouthwash on the counter, a small huntsman spider crawled out from under the towel. It was just a baby, the size of a quarter. I caught it in my paint water jar that was on the counter and put it outside. I should have taken a picture.

It's wonderful that you are also rescuing these little bugs that came indoors. Many of my acquaintances immediately kill all the bugs they see! I even rescue spiders from the claws of my cats, even though they are so nice to catch.
Title: Re: Wonderful Nature - Thread
Post by: BlackCurtains on August 02, 2023, 04:49:43 PM
The only bugs I kill immediately when indoors are ants, flies and roaches. Depending on the spider, sometimes I will let them stay. If it's a spider that makers a web and is out of the way, that's fine. Hunstman are prowling spiders though so I don't want them in the house.

The other day when I opened my door a very large flying ant fell in the doorway and came inside until I grabbed what was near and pushed it back outside. I did not want it in my house!
Title: Re: Wonderful Nature - Thread
Post by: Heart Of Midnight on August 02, 2023, 05:07:29 PM
Yep, I kill fruit flies, ants, mosquitoes, wasps and bugs that destroy textiles.
(Sometimes I've even let stray wasps out of the bedroom through the open window, if they're just buzzing by the window and not threatening me!)

I'll let the spiders be, too, as long as they don't land on my face. I don't want them to live above the bed because I have experience when a spider has landed on my ear while I was sleeping! Fortunately, I woke up pretty soon to something itching and scratching in my ear! I managed to dig a small spider out of my ear. Unfortunately it didn't survive, but fortunately it didn't have time to make its nest in my ear! :whew:
My spouse usually notices the spiders pretty soon and he hates them, but I save them and move them either out of the house or to another room where the cats can't access. (In winter, of course, I don't take the spiders outside, but leave them inside in other rooms to live.)

I'm the same with spiders. They get free accommodation here. Board is any stray flies, & I have a lot!!! Ordered some flypaper to get them sorted. Roll on the arrival of that!!!

i don't usually kill spiders either. unless it's a black widow or if they're in the bed or something. i figure they eat other bugs so we have an understanding :) my husband will squash them though. sometimes i take them outside. but i worry that some don't belong outdoors. i think some are more indoor spiders. ants and flies will be dealt with though.

i meant to post a while back. but i was sitting on my patio the other day and i think i saw a whooping crane fly by. the only other cranes native to the area i live in are gray and this one was white. it was flying pretty high and i didn't have binoculars so i'm not 100% sure. but since they're super endangered i hope it was.

there's a river close by so I see a lot of water birds fly by. mostly ducks.

also, i put out a hummingbird feeder in April and never saw any hummingbirds drink from it so after a few months i took it down. then the other day i saw a hummingbird in my neighbor's tree. i guess next year i'll put it out later. maybe in July instead of April.

This is about 10 km outside of my city, and yes, we could bike here. The temperature and humidity was crazy high this evening, the meteorologists said it was tropical. The humidity made the fire alarm go off twice at the cinema and two other locations.

This is the river that goes through my city, dividing it in half. We have a walkway right next to it and I live close enough to be able to walk by it whenever I feel, it's also the prefered route to the city center. I always felt it was healing walking by it and I'm not alone. The other day, our local news wrote about a woman who travels six hours by train from Stockholm (that is surrounded by water might I add) just to spend a couple of hours by the river before going back home again and she thinks the river helps her better than her therapist. Pretty neat :).

Beautiful pictures! You're lucky to have so many nature areas that are easy to get to :)

About the river, I grew up in Wisconsin right beside Lake Michigan. I always felt the same way about the lake. It had a personality, sometimes it was happy, sometimes it was angry, sometimes sad. I hung out there as a teenager and a lot of times I would break off from the group and go sit on the beach and just watch and listen to the water. Now those beaches don't exist anymore, the lake has risen and taken a lot of the land back. There used to be a big park with a soccer field and that's gone now too.

Thank you. I live in a very green city with lots of recreation sites with easy access (and all free because of the Right to Roam) and lots of beautiful places surrounding it. It's also very bike friendly where it's sometimes faster to bike than take a car or bus :).

Oh, wow. That lake is rather huge right? More like a tiny ocean? I'm trying to remember the school maps and not google, lol. It's something with the moving water and the waves I think that captures us. We have small lakes here but they don't breath like the river and no waves unless it's very windy. Sad to hear it has swallowed some of the land though.

Yesterday there was a bird fight outside my window. Two mockingbirds crash landed and they were kicking and pecking each other, wings open, and making terrible screechy sounds. I read that males defend territory by dancing, so I think these two were females. Maybe fighting over a nesting spot? Or who knows. Mockingbirds are very smart, maybe they just didn't like each other.

I'll put some autumn pictures here. I still haven't bothered to go for walks because of my cough (except a few times at night, but pictures of those later ). The autumn colors have faded a little, so I haven't managed to take pictures of it this year, but I'll put a few old pictures (I think they're from the year -21) of the maple tree. It grows in my brother's yard. This year it didn't have such colorful leaves.
The rest of the photos were taken this October. The last picture is the morning view from the upstairs bedroom window, trees and sky. There is also a view of my brother's house from the same window, but I won't photograph it. :P

Northern Lights! :frolic: Even though it's just green mist now, it still makes me happy! I stand in the cold for a while admiring them, until the cold froze my fingers too much and I had to come back inside. Fortunately, I can peek out of the window at them, and I can watch much more magnificent aurora borealis via YouTube live from northern Finland.

Gorgeous photos! And the Northern Lights! I would love to see them in person one day.

This morning I sat and listened to the birds for a long time. I still miss the tree that was outside my window but there is a street light that the birds will land on and sing. They seemed to be taking turns. There were two starlings, a dove and a mockingbird all sharing the space on the light. Aster was watching them too and making little tiny mews at them :inlove:

As a kind of follow up to the above post - someone snapped a pic of a large female coyote with a badly injured front leg. It looks broken and infected. We're supposed to call animal control if we see her. They want to catch her and give her to one of the wildlife rescues to see if they can fix her leg. Babcock has some coyotes in their care permanently. I think Peace River has one too. Anyway, I hope they can catch her and get her fixed up.

I so hope we get a white christmas! I don't need anything else but snow, really :worshippy:.

I've taken a bunch of pictures in daylight, it's been so white and grey so it's boring but beautiful, but I need to find the energy to move them to dropbox, open them on the computer, rezise them, upload them to flickr and add them here.

First one is from December 5th. Last time I saw the sun. It's around noon and it's just above the treetops. -20 degrees celcius and the sun above the river. To the left you can see snow vaporising in the sunbeams. The red huts used to be boat huts. Now there is various businesses there. The one furthest to the left is the hairstudio where I cut my hair :).

Beldarna, :iconclap: wonderful, wonderful! :iconclap:

Oh, you have leaves on the maples and in my yard the oaks have leaves!  :wow: Let's see if they stay on the trees until spring.

A very decorative Christmas tree. Here in our village, the big spruce tree has only colorless lights, and in general, Christmas trees in cities only have colorless lights. :pout: It would be nice if, in this country too, they put more colored lights and a star on the top!

I already have winter pictures on my laptop, but I don't have time to put them up here. Maybe before the eve I will be able. You have wintery day photos and I have night photos.

Thanks!

I think it's fascinating how the leaves have not fallen off, we've had some storms already with heavy winds and they're still there! Like how?!

I think the colour of lights depends on the city. Where I grew up we only had those warm yellow lights. The tree on the square only have red and yellow lights.. Or it had last year I've not seen it this year.

I wanna see some night piccies!

Not the most beautiful picture but I used John for scale to show the snow embankment we have right now. This was on the way to the cinema to see Dune 2 (the cinema is in the brick house with the tower, although the tower is part of another business. It was built as a firestation waaay back.) We have it liked this almost everywhere now, causing traffic to be interesting to say the least.

Thanks :).

Lol at the smelly snow. We have so little exhaust from the cars so it looks dirty but it doesn't smell at all :):
You're welcome to visit if you ever have the opportunity!

Beldarna, Wonderful pictures! That last one not so much, hahah, that dirty snow is a very familiar sight in Finland too.  What's more, the dog's poo is revealed under the melting snow!  :X In the spring, besides the street dust, it's the worst! Why don't all dog people care to collect them away! :gah:

Even now I don't have any photos ready for here, but I can write a little about nature.

Here where I am now (my spouse's apartment) there is a forest right next to it. We had the front door open for ventilation late one night and I was listening for owls. I had just said to my spouse that it would be nice if a fox or a cat appeared here at our place, then almost immediately a scream started to be heard from very close by! :wow: It was a fox! I ran to get my phone from inside and recorded the scream. It's March and foxes are in heat (or is it rut?) If I had never heard a fox scream before, I would probably have been very scared, it is so wonderfully creepy. I put the recording on the instagram side, but the sound is quite weak. Even though it was very close my phone didn't record it properly. The content of the video isn't great either, because it was dark and there was just a big pile of snow in front of me.

:fox:

Last night I got to listen to a distant Tawny Owl (Strix aluco).

The white ibis have been hanging out in "my" yard (the patch of grass nearest to my apartment). I tried to get a pic but something spooked them and they all flew off.

Aster and I also witnessed a bird fight last night! Two mourning doves were going at it. The loser flew away while the winner ate whatever it was they were fighting over. I think my downstairs neighbor has been putting out birdseed.

Not exactly nature but our male cat (who has been 'done' and is about 5 years old) has adopted a kitten who looks exactly like him. It follows him around and does everything he does. We have called it Puma 2.

^ Aw, that's so cute!

While I was sitting on my stairs I heard baby birds cheeping and saw a nest in the tree next to me. It was a mockingbird nest! One of the parents came to feed them while I was sitting there. I guess they know I'm not a threat. I'm wearing a bright orange shirt so it's not like they didn't see me.

Also last night there were bunnies all over :inlove:

aww, what a sweet kitty :)

mockingbirds get so protective while they're nesting, BC. it's cool that they knew you weren't a threat.

the birds are out here too :) I saw a couple of robins and bluebirds. i've been hearing mourning doves and mockingbirds singing too.

There is snow, there is melted ground, there is snow.. Cold, warm, cold.. this is the Finnish spring.

At the beginning of this month, I was able to admire crocuses and bumblebees. Migratory birds arrived and began searching for mates. I could smell the melted earth around me and watch the ice melt on the lake.
Now, on Saturday, winter arrived back. I get to admire the snow-covered land and the forest again. Feel the freezing cold. But even though I love winter, I feel sad precisely because of these migratory birds, especially the small ones. They can't survive without the help of us people. Winter feeding must be continued. Most of all, I worry about the hedgehogs. I really hope I don't find them somewhere in the middle of the snow! :( I heard that yesterday someone had found a hedgehog in poor condition. I hope it survived and got help in time! Now more snow and cold have been promised for the next few days. I have to be really careful now in my yard and in the woods too.

Today I took the baby to the woodland playgroup and the best thing was listening to the birds in the trees. All birds are 'duck' to my little one but I'm sure she'll soon get the hang of it :)

I didn't know it was like that, I just think of Finland as being like Moomintroll forest and once spring has arrived you play a flute and start planning hikes and garden parties. I love hearing you talk about where you live. We stopped feeding the birds about a month ago. There was a light frost last nigth but I think it will be the last.

Moomintroll forest!   A wonderful image!

This is now a very rare situation! There are usually night frosts and they belong to the Finnish spring, but not this one, that it is also freezing during the day and the snow is blowing!  :nope:
As March turned into April, it had been unusually warm..it had attracted birds to move to Finland exceptionally early. The cold northerly flow started suddenly, but perhaps the worst situation for the birds was the snowfall, because it covered all the food. :(
I have read news about many dead migratory birds (Robins, Chaffinchs, Song Thrushes..) I have also read that some birds have started to make an escape migration. :(
Fortunately, many people besides me have helped them and continued to feed them. Now the weather forecasts look a little more positive, as plus degrees and rain have been promised for the rest of the week. In the last days of the month, it may already be closer to 20 °C in some parts of the country! :wow:
