Title: Vintage kids anime that DVD forgot...
Post by: Loreofyore on January 25, 2019, 10:41:35 AM
It's the childhood anime time machine...
What do you remember from your childhood that made it to to VHS or broadcast in your nation and language but are still waiting for it to come back to you on DVD in your region and the language of your childhood?
I'll start us off with one...
:cold: Toei Animation's Twelve Months... still waiting for Region 1 English.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkB_7rcezSw
Happy memory triggers everyone!

Watched that on one youtube after watching a russian version of the same tale.

I remember there was one cartoon I had on vhs. It had bears with butterfly wings and I cant for the life of me remember the title but I still remember the norwegian dub and the song sang during some festival.

Sounds pretty cool, you'll have to let us know when you find it! Only winged bear cartoon I know of was from the Wuzzles which is probably not it, they only had one I think and she's a butter-yellow, her friend is a lion with that has pink or yellow 'bee' wings and is drawn a tad teddy-like.

I remember one that we taped off of the Disney Channel back in the day.  It was Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp.

I think it may have been put on VHS at one point but I have yet to find it on DVD.

One I remember is Angel (Hana No Ko Lunlun)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dc0HBsqI4v8

The version I remember was only the first 2 episodes of the series although I think there's a longer version that showed more of the story. In the version I saw she was still looking for the flower at the end of the movie. I think it had been released on DVD but not in the US/Canada.

Another one I remember is Toei's Fairy Tale Classics that had several stories on it. The ones I remember most are Cinderella and Ali Baba

Looks like the ZIV dub was put onto DVD in a compilation:

Here is a link to the amazon page for the DVD:

Also
@Pokeyonekenobie
This contains Aladdin and his magical lamp -- maybe the one you are looking for?

I want this
https://youtu.be/QswFm2rvSY8?t=11

Some of them were released in a DVD set:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Grimms-Fairy-Tale-Classics-One/dp/B0002475JS
A few episodes were released to a single Region 2 DVD titled "Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics - Volume One" under distribution by Fox Kids and Maximum Entertainment in 2004.[1] The episodes included were:

Hansel and Gretel
Little Red Riding Hood
The Golden Goose
Snow White And Rose Red
Beauty and the Beast

The British newspapers Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror released the following episodes on promotional DVDs:

Snow White
Bluebeard
The Frog Prince
Rapunzel
Rumpelstiltskin
Cinderella
Beauty and the Beast
Puss N' Boots
Little Red Riding Hood
The Golden Goose
Hansel and Gretel

And there seems to be bootlegs of the rest.

@Loreofyore
:) I'm trying to find yours too. I have a feeling that sometimes things like that are released in like a dollar store venue (because: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2016-09-12/.106347 ) or in compilations like I posted in the other post-- making it harder to just google...

I do see it on a R2 DVD -- with an english track here:

I don't think the Noozles ever made it to DVD...that's about all I've got.

This thread has actually made me go hunt up tv shows from my childhood. Anime wasn't a huge thing here when I was a kid (not in the sense of being anime, most imported cartoons when I was a kid were American or European, we had a lot of French ones for some reason).

I don't know that I'd necessarily want them on DVD now, either, but things like Sharky and George, Dogtanian, Willy Fogg...stick in my mind as shows my sister and I used to watch early in the morning. Sister liked Albert the Fifth Musketeer as well. I know that was French. I think Sharkey & George was either French or Quebecois, can't remember -although it was dubbed into English.

I guess Dogtanian counts most in this equation as apparently it was Japanese/Spanish originally? I was way too young to get that though, it was just in English here in the eighties :)

These are all on DVD now I think though :/

Finding this on youtube just kind of made my day xD.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJfAjLkxajg

It's called "wanwan sanjuushi!" xD.

There were also some drama series, a lot from Australia that we watched as kids. I remember the Girl from Tomorrow/Tomorrow's End when I was about eight. I loved that show xD. But that's drama, not animated. Also Ocean Oddysey and Round the Twist. We really did import a lot from Australia round that time ;)

Just remembered some others, Phantomcat. I only had episode one and two on VHS. I know it was on separate DVDs but it wasn’t all of them.

Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, and Gargoyles. I know these were only released in the USA but I wish that they were released here in the UK.

Now I'm thinking of Wizbit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnuMAL2YKgI

But I am still drawn to non-animated stuff when I think of things that lurk deep in the memory rather than on DVD release. And still miles from anime, although I admit I didn't realise Dogtanian had Japanese links so maybe there was more that I didn't know about as a kid...

A lot of the animated stuff I do remember does have a DVD release already :/

I am now browsing youtube for other nostaglic things though. I guess stuff like Bertha or Pigeon Street probably don't have DVD releases, but they're also pretty British and so don't count? Also Trapdoor. And Stoppit & Tidyup. Weird British TV is weird.

Also Raggy Dolls. I think kids would benefit now from the message of the Reject Bin. It is also apparently on DVD now, but I think it ought to be airing, or something on the same lines...I think "Just to be whoever you are is no disgrace...don't be scared if you don't fit in..." is a better message than "I'm going to teach you how to be friends MY way."

Animaniacs got a DVD release over here recently!! Couldn't believe it when I saw it in HMV. It's just one volume but hopefully the rest of the series will be released later:

I hope they release Tiny Toons and Pinky and The Brain later, too.

yesssss I love Fillmore too!! I wish Disney treated their animated shows better :( Hardly any of them are on DVD and it's a real shame. Did Recess ever get a proper DVD release? I know it got one or two of those silly "best of" sets at one point.

Little Koala! That's it! That's one of the ones I loved. I clearly remember David the Gnome. My mom loved that show. We taped some episodes off tv. Noozles also looks familiar.

Most the cartoons I watched on Nickelodeon were about animals. I also remember something about raccoons... but I'm not sure if it was Nickelodeon or Disney. I think Nickelodeon first became available here around 1990 or 91 so it would've been around that time.

The Raccoons was on Disney Channel--at least that was where I watched it.

Recess never got a proper release as far as I'm aware.  They had The Recess Movie, Recess: All Growed Down, Recess: Takes the 5th, and Recess: Miracle at 3rd Street School.  Each "movie" had a couple of bonus episodes on the disc but other than the actual Recess Movie, the others were made up of three cartoons with some filler material in between.

That's nostalgic. Whenever that was on in the morning my Dad would come watch it with us, he loved it. So every Saturday he'd be working in the kitchen and we'd be like, DAD! RACCOONS! and that'd be it for him for the next half an hour <3

Over here it was on terrestrial as part of the weekend morning show stuff - but I don't remember which channel. I am leaning towards ITV but I may be wrong. Either way I never saw it on any cable channel.

Near positive I remember it as the Disney Channel too we only got to afford the Disney channel once in a while so wasn't just another button on the remote. Strange shows like that would come and go... never got to figure out why some of the creatures noses were drawn bent, but it looked more like a trunk to me, and I was waiting to see if they ever used like one. The Wuzzles were after all two creatures in one.
Anyway... this youtube user seems to agree that it was Disney:

I admit, I would like to be able to see more than about three episodes of pokemon in Japanese without having to be in Japan to do it.

I saw some of whichever series was airing when I was over there, and I think somewhere I have a Japanese DVD of one of the other series, but yeah. That's annoying.

It really is shocking that it's 2019 and there *still* hasn't been a release of Pokemon in Japanese outside of Japan itself :( I know there's a lot of ground to cover, but you'd think they could release the movies in both languages, at least..

No kidding. Especially since netflix of late has gone crazy with adding anime and japanese/korean drama series. Which is nice because I can turn the subtitles off which I can't do on crunchyroll :/ I guess it's all tied up with foreign licences and what is deemed appropriate and gah. In any case, considering how much Japanese stuff I watch, it's stupid that the first time I ever saw a full episode of Pokemon in Japanese was when I was in Tokyo. In 2017. -.-.

It's not that I care too much about the names of the pokemon, I just want to hear MikiShin voice Kojirou and to not have it cut to pieces by the censor teams...

I have a VHS copy of the Porygon seizure episode. It's in Japanese, but it doesn't have subtitles.

That one was pulled even in Japan I think, after the seizure issues, though, so no chance of that one getting a DVD release. Honestly, not super-keen to see it given the stories. It's interesting that a vhs of that episode does exist.

I don't care about subs hence getting Japanese versions, but I'm kind of put off from pursuing them in any great detail because of the sheer quantity of episodes and the expense of importing tons of Japanese DVDs. I have quite a few of various things but I can't think of any of them having subtitles except one that has Japanese subtitles...so the Japanese market aren't helpful in this regard re language tracks.

Weirdly there's a similar thing even with recent shows like Miraculous Ladybug whereby the US release has a dual language track of English and French but the UK release has only English and the French release only French. I have a multiregion DVD player so it's not the end of the world to get the US version, but it is weird to me how the options are different in different places even for very recent series.

Most anime releases these days have the original Japanese track, I was just able to get the final volume of another series from Italy because it had a Japanese and Italian track rather than just a dub and no original. But pokemon still isn't in that category. Very frustrating.

Yeah, the Porygon ep's never going to be released again, it was a huge scandal and they'd rather pretend that it never happened (fair enough). AFAIK all the existing copies of it are bootleg/fan recordings.

Yeah, mine's a bootleg. I just wish it had subtitles.

I bet that Pokémon episode is one of the reasons Viz's Sailor Moon Super S dub has the photosensitive/seizure warning for her Moon Gorgeous Meditation attack.

That makes more sense. But that ep is rather an exception :/

I bought one of the Fairytale Adventures DVD set with "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp" and while the cartoon is the one I remember, the dubbing is different.  Aladdin's voice is too deep, the tiny kids sound like teenagers and the princess has a whiny voice while the royal vizier has a macho voice whereas in the version I grew up with, the princess had a pretty voice and the vizier had a nasally one that totally fit how the character was drawn much better.  Oh well.  At least some of the background music is still the same.

I'm sorry the dub wasn't the one you remember. I think that DVD is the one that also includes a couple episodes of Angel which I think also had 2 different versions, but it's been so long since I've been able to watch Angel in English that I'm not sure if I'd notice the dub differences.

I was really happy when I found out the Unico and the Island of Magic was same English dub as the one I remember. :)
