Title: Guardians of Harmony toys
Post by: lostpony on December 17, 2016, 01:45:53 AM
First, this is about G4, but the toys not the show so if it belongs in FiM show forum, then mods please go ahead and move it over for me please, thanks!

The Guardians of Harmony set are in my opinion the best full-size G4 Hasbro toys to come out so far.  They are pretty show accurate in appearance, they are articulated (pose-able) and they have some mass to them.  They feel substantial to hold and I think they are actually intended to be played with.

I have had Celestia and Luna (edit:  I mean Nightmare Moon) for some time now and today I got a Shadowbolt, Queen Chrysalis vs Spike, and Twilight vs Thorax (unnamed changeling drone I mean).  I didn't want to take the Sisters out of their boxes but today someone asked me about them and didn't have any friends with them really to know how they are so I went ahead and unpacked the Shadowbolt and handled her a bit and I'll take some pics later and do the same for the others I have.

Shadowbolt:
The articulation could be better...no knees in the rear legs so the only way to make the rear shorter is put the leg(s) forward or rearward a lot....the front leg shoulders have very limited range of motion so the poses are limited, and the tail doesn't articulate though it does sort of bend and slowwwly bend back.  So while difficult to get her into a rearing pose in tripod with the tail, she will do it and she also flattens out for a flying pose and the head goes all the way forward and up to right angle to the back so there are some options there.  It seems clear the pose options are for play, not display, and the box that shows the rearing pose on the back says "poses may require hand support".  speaking of play the wings do go into a range of different positions and they pop out pretty easy...this is good in some ways but if you find her used, you are likely to find her with missing wings.  Her front legs have limited range in the shoulders but the elbows are very good including swiveling so you can make good hand gestures or a raised hoof pose.  She doesn't stand well without all 4 on the ground through, but you can make her stand precariously on three a few different ways.

I don't know why Hasbro included a little chicken with bat wings...called a Cockatrice, and the other accessories are a silly Shadowbolt badge that clips onto the leg and a Shadowbolt symbol that also clips onto the leg and best of all is a pair of shades that look real good on her and fit her head nice, even though they are hard to make stay on.  You probably won't be finding her used with too many accessories and missing wings will likely be common.

While the articulation is very limited in many ways it is also a universe of improvement over stiff brushables and other gimmicks and so while she's not perfect, I absolutely Love this Shadowbolt and I'm very glad I paid $10. US for her today.

Which GoH should I unpack next?  Maybe the Queen and Spike.

I also want Rainbow Dash with Tank!  but haven't seen them in retial so far....

Does anypony else have any of these, out of their boxes and have any input for the rest of us?  Feel free to post!  Thanks for reading!

I have Shining Armor, Spike and Chrysalis and both Celestia and Nightmare Moon.

Agreed on the articulation but I love how flexible and easy the armor and helmets are to put on and take off ^^
The paint on Shining Armor's horn isn't perfect either. The tip is nearly grey, but not completely unexpected tho...  :/

The only ones I have pictures of are Celestia and Nightmare Moon :) I was planning on making pictures of the others soon

I really love the new toy line. I love doing toy photography so poseable figures are so much better than brushables!

I agree the articulation has some limits which sucks but at the same time I'm overall happy with the look and weight of them. I noticed like in another thread I saw a few months back a few of the figures have this weird plastic residue coming out of the box. Hopefully that doesn't turn sticky in the long run.

So far I've picked up Shining Armor, Pinkie Pie, and the Shadowbolt. I should have picked up Rainbow Dash when I saw her cause when I went back all that was left was shadowbolt hence getting her before dash.

I think the accessories are kind of fun dunno what to think of the badges though. Only thing I don't like is that the accessories are hard plastic I can't even clip Shining's Spear anywhere on him very easy. So I've been propping it up with things.

Oh yes the little brochure inside the package makes me want Shining Armor too!

Which ones did you notice the residue on, JazzMatazz?  My Shadowbolt was residue-free which I noted with pleasure and that kind of thing bothers me...on the pearly brushables, people say it washes off OK though.

Moonbreeze (I love your celestia avatar image!) I did notice imperfection on my Shadowbolt's paint too where the body color shows through but I also don't mind.

Some of the finishing work (seams or injection points not smoothed entirely) is slightly better or worse on some individual pieces but by buying retail I was able to pick the best looking one and the worst one was only slightly imperfect in that way.

I'm not overly keen on the GoH line but I have to admit that Nightmare Moon and Celestia are gorgeous.  ^.^

I got a Shadowbolt and RD recently, and I LOVE them! They're much bigger than I expected, and much more detailed and high quality. Tank's little propeller even moves!

Rainbow has the same inaccurate mane pattern as her blindbag counterpart (seriously, it's a RAINBOW, how can you mess that up?) and its gonna be hard to get them into epic poses that will stand on their own for display (you're right, they're definitely made for play over display), but overall I think they are AMAZING and an awesome addition to G4.

I only saw the one Rainbow and Shadowbolt that I bought at Target, and haven't seen any Pinkies. The larger sets have been plentiful, though, and I've seen like 50 Shining Armors, he seems to be the least popular for some reason. Haven't seen the big Spike anywhere yet, and the non-poseable figures are still scant around here.

I love the celestial and nightmare moon ones! The facial expressions are so...angry? On some of them, that it's off putting for me. I'm glad hasbro is doing an action line for the fans! They are so fun!

Mrbrightsky, they must have sent all our Shining Armors to Texas cuz I don't see any here in my little corner of California.  I forgot there was any big Spike until I saw him on the GoH line card included with the Shadowbolt...I bet he's real expensive!

I think this is Hasbro's first foray into "action figures" as opposed to "doll" ponies.  I bet they think they are including boys and I doubt they have any idea how much the girls love the fighting too...whether or not my assumptions about their assumptions are true though, it is great to see them going in this direction at last and I hope this line does well enough for them to make even better action figures and go further.  Maybe next time we get much better engineered moving parts and poses that do not require "hand support".

Mermaid the word I would use for the Sisters' expressions is "fierce".  It's clear the Sisters are supposed to fight each other, but why does poor Spike have to fight the Queen all by himself?  Why does Twlight get to focus on just the one drone?  Obviously we are supposed to buy reinforcements, haha.  So let's "army" up!

I noticed residue on shadowbolt and a tiny bit on shining armor but the more I handled him it seemed to go away so maybe residue from the molding process?

I currently only have the Celestia and NMM figures, don't plan on getting the Queen Chrysalis one because I'm not overly fond of the model. I actually haven't seen any other GoH but that could be due to not being able to go to some place like Target (it's on the other side of town opposite of the way I have to go home after work) and would actually have to make a special trip there

I've seen the Celestia and Nightmare Moon ones at work. They look so awesome^^ I /really/ want the one of Discord on his throne though. If I had infinite room, I'd also want the grown Spike one as well as Celestia and Nightmare Moon. Right now I don't have any of them because we've run out of space in our tiny house.

Eeew that means it's all over you now, haha.  My Shadowbolt didn't seem to have any...so far I've been lucky and haven't encountered the stuff but I didn't buy any pearlies.

I'll be doing that I promise!  I just need to wrap up an urgent loose end like finishing failing a class that's over tonight.  So check back later...

My space is long gone, I'm collecting into storage now but getting my GoHs so far made me stop cuz I ran out of money!

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Now I want Pinkie too!  Looks like Rainbow shares the same mold as the Shadowbolt and maybe except for head and tail with Twilight and the Wonderbolts too.

Great photos! Cool topic!
These toys are very 'show like' I must agree!
Happy Pinkie there is a REAL way to do expressions on the pony toys. I think the brushable was going for the same look, but really missed and the 'super happy' brushables are just kind of weird to me, while these toys aren't. They made Cheese Sandwich cute too, which is surprising because I really don't like his funko.

They got pink tongues in there...but Twilight gets purple teeth?
Spitfire finally doesn't look high? Good.
Why does Chrysalis have wheels? She never had wheels in the show?
Fierce Dash! (She looks this way so often in the show, I am liking the idea of toys with varied expressions. Hopefully we get 'happy twi' too later)

For anyone who has these: do you feel the prices are reasonable for what you got?
Do you feel it needs to be on sale to be good, or are normal prices within reason?

I ask because some of the other things like normal snowglobe brushables for 10 dollars or light up princess 10 too or like 3+dollar blindbags or the costly Wonderbolts BB set and I feel I have to wait on a sale because it feels too much for the size/what you get.

I think the head molds are pretty much the same it's just the lack of paint really makes it look bad.

The wheels on the Queen are launchable weapons for shooting at Spike.

This whole set has all sorts of play accessories that are completely unlike the show which is kinda wierd when it's the only G4s Hasbro has ever made that actually look like the show characters.  (except for BBs that I can't even see without a microscope).

I got the Sisters one at a time for $20 each and while pricey, it seems worth it to have a heavy toy in my hands that feels like something worth buying and I bought them one per paycheck so it wasn't so bad.  The rest I bought all at once and now I'm broke, missed out on the 2-for-1 BuildaBear sale:  I could have had both Sisters new with all their goodies including gold shoes for $55 together plus shipping but I don't regret buying a Shadowbolt, the Queen, Spike, Twilight, and Thorax instead.  Their articulation isn't all that good and the wings fall off and they cost too much but they feel like toys and they look like G4 and they do move enough to play with imagination and I love them and I want Rainbow Dash with Spike, Pinkie and her canon, Shining Armor, and any of these in played-with condition so I can enjoy them carelessly while my pretty ones are safely in their boxes.

Short answer is yes, worth the price.  Buy at least Tia she's cheap on eBay!

Hey WingsofMasquerade, did you know there is a Masquerade in Whizzer's pose??

I really want a Shining Armour next, he looks awesome.

I feel like Princess Celestia and Nightmare Moon are well worth the $20. Twilight vs Changeling I got for around $10 since I had a R rewards coupon. I wish Hasbro had painted Twilight's teeth.

I'll go ahead and take my NMM off her card maybe tonight and report whether she stands up on her own...she seems to be standing on her own hair, and Tia too, so I assumed they stand up well.  She better or I'll just have her lose all the time.

I had some 2" plastic Indians when I was small and one had a chief that stands up nice and the other didn't stand up and he'd always get killed off early cuz he was hard to deal with, then my sister had him crawl to sneak around and that's when I realized he wasn't supposed to stand up but to crawl and he was cool from then on.  Much smarter than the one that stood up proudly all the time actually, haha.  Dang I completely forgot about those guys until this moment....regardless, NMM is supposed to stand up so I'll check her out right away.

I wonder why they chose to give Chrysalis boxing gloves and a wrestler mask, of all things. She looks cute on her own, though!

I finally got Twilight and the drone, and YIKES those wings! Rainbow and the Shadowbolts'  are much better. Twilight's fall off if you so much as look at them wrong. Also, her teeth bother me a lot less than i thought they would. But she's so top heavy I can't get her to stand in any cool rearing poses :(

I have been seeing NMM at almost every Super Walmart (that is if you have walmarts in the UK), but they keep selling out! I really dislike Walmart's MLP section because they have hardly anything, but they keep getting the GoH Celestia and NMM. I also always seem to find Funko ponies at Walmart as well, I recently purchased Octavia, and Walmart is the only store where I can find them.

Didn't you know that since her latest defeat, the Queen is now into Mexican tag-team wrestling!

Hasbro knows the poses won't stand up, on the box it says "requires hand support"  Maybe, if this line does very well, they will make more action figure style things and learn to do it a bit better.

It looks to me like the problem is the pose of that left rear leg.  Mine is a lot further back, and you can see the proper position in the one pictured in the second post on the first page of this thread.  Yours is so far forward that it contacts the floor too short.

It would be risky, but you could try breaking the glue between the lag and the tail and pushing the leg back and regluing it there.  You could use a sharp blade to cut the glue, but I'm not sure you are going to be able to make the hip joint rotate to reposition the leg, because it could be glued.  You might also be able to cut a little off the tab on the bottom of the tail, which would lean her forward and change her look a bit but should correct the left/right problem.

If she were mine I'd either attempt the repair or keep her in the box and get another one.

Or, maybe you could pose her with another figure under hoof:  a vanquished foe! and take advantage of her difference.  If there is anypony that thin...

She's just $15 on Amazon...did you buy her retail?  This is a serious enough flaw you might be able to exchange her.  Good luck!

Q for $6,
Cheese for $6,
Pinky for $6,
Rainbow with Tank (yay Tank!) for $6,
an extra Shadowbolt for $4.50,
threw in Funko Daring Do and Muffins for $11.50 each,
and got free shipping going over $50.

I also got another guitar book to help me understand the fretboard better but that's off topic.  Amazon rocks!!

Can't help but think I should have ordered 2 of some of these, some to share or sell, but....just the extra shadowbolt for now.  Maybe I add one to my ponies at work.  These prices can't be beat, get yours while supplies last as they say.

Thanks for the advice lostpony. Unfortunately I bought these two at Barnes and Noble way back before Halloween and I no longer have the receipt. I'm not sure if I'll try to move the leg, I actually like the idea of a vanquished foe! I may make a little scene for them too and could put a stalagmite or something under her hoof.
If I decide to alter her I will definitely take pictures to show off the results.

Is the Pinkie Pie chicken cannon actually supposed to shoot?  Ours doesn't really work - wondered if we got a dud.

Is the Pinkie Pie chicken cannon actually supposed to shoot?  Ours doesn't really work - wondered if we got a dud.
Yes, but it's just a simple spring mechanism so you need to pull the pin back as you load the cannon so that the chicken is touching the rear of the cannon with the pin pulled back as far as it can go.  Then the chicken should shoot out when you release the pin.  Pulling the pin back with the chicken already in the cannon won't work - the chicken doesn't go back with the pin so it just sits there when you release it.

pinky's canon looks like it fires like a pinball machine ball-starter in that it doesn't lock into armed position.  The chicken has a little notch on it but not sure if that engages with the pin...my Pinky in on her way and should arrive in a week so I'll definitely know more at that time.

I also ordered Cheese whose tank seems to have a better firing mechanism...

The big Spike looks like its firing mechanism is pretty good but I dind't order Spike and I hope I don't regret it...

I got Princess Celestia and Shining Armor yesterday. Here's a pic of Shining Armor in packaging. One store had a big display of the Guardians of Harmony set up in the toys.

I found some GoH commercials on youtube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbTZHZeUO_Q

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laRhsdtmW3I

fan toy opening video, has them all...no wait no shadow bolt or wonderbolts and doesn't know Tank's name :(
plays with big Spike quite a bit so we see some sounds and such
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7FIX75as0g

and a fan video...seems she didn't get Nightmare Moon but has most of the rest
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O_C__q3efc

another toy fan video, in stop motion, this one's pretty fun
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrVhyinfttw

hm seems there's a GoH game too with some nice galloping

I hope that they make more characters like the NMM and Celestia, here's some that I would love to see in a position similar to NMM and Celestia

 Cadence
Sombra
Twilight
Trixie
Tirek
Starlight
all the mane 6 in one
Luna

Anyone else wonder if they're gonna make Sombra at all?

The fan favorites one, the fancier collectable version like the Celestia/NMM/Discord statues.

Must be this one then:

$50 and only three left in stock, DRAT I'm going to miss this one too dangit.

Too many GoH, too few dollars.

Seems more like the Sisters than the rest of the set, and I can't be sure if that's one or two extra drones with her, and the description is of no help because it says "style their hair" when of course they have none....but at least one drone is included that looks different than the other GoH drone.

Worth the price for sure if you aren't out of money like I am.

While the packaged Discord is on $6 after-xmas blowout sale, the fancy one that was the "show exclusive" is $79.

No matter though, the cheap Queen I have on the way looks pretty exciting; I'll be happy with just her if her alter ego doesn't end up being cheap at some point.

yeah I saw the wonderbolts set as well. it didn't really make sense to me though, you clip big wings on her back? Okay? I guess it would be fun for a little kid, but to a collector... i had mixed feelings.

That crazy wing pack runs up the cost a lot on that pair too...is why I bought a Shadowbolt instead until I caught the Wonderbolts on blowout on amazon.  They are complete without it though and it does provide some sound effects too so maybe is fun for kids and maybe for those of us who do more than collect...

I don't really play with my ponies so much but the other day I got a pair of traditional wooden tops and just can't stop playing with them, sooo cool so I bet you some adult out there is enjoying that wing pack accessory...

I just hope it doesn't ask if I'm a princess too, haha.  And yet I still keep pressing that Pinklestia button...have to, to make her wings flap.

Yeah, I don't really get the Wonderbolts' wing accessories either.

The toys themselves looked good, no obvious paint smears or anything.  They're also slightly bigger than the normal brushables, which pleases me as I've always found the regulars too dinky and the Fashion Stylings too big.

yeah, I feel the same way about the size. The regular ones felt small, and the FS felt really big. I think that a size around the regular Celestia would have been a good fit, but that could have been too big as well.

I like them quite a bit- if I wasn't trying to downsize I'd get them all.

For now I'm committed to limiting myself to the fan figures only- I really really love the way NM looks- and will definitely get Chrysalis & the changelings when they finally come out (not the action figure set- the static set)  I don't love Celestia but I can't have NM without Celestia to battle after all...

I really like Discord too- the SDCC one. So far I haven't had the guts to debox since the packaging is SO nice- but it really takes up a ridiculous amount of space.

Title: Re: Guardians of Harmony toys
Post by: lostpony on December 29, 2016, 02:36:39 PM
GoH toys really do seem to have two separate focuses:  the toys that seem better to keep in the box, like the Celestia and Discord ones, and the ones that are articulated for play.

Nightmare Moon seems to work both ways...the toy video that introduces a Celestia along with the action figure ones really highlights how they really don't go together as much as being two separate focuses.

So the ones in the boxes can sit around and snarl at each other through their windows sitting on their shelves, and the jointed ones can grapple each other in the arena of our tabletops and carpets for our pleasure.

Top of page again.  Whaddaya know.

I have looked at some of these in stores and they are pretty big and bulky. I like the action idea but sort of feel that the concept is just not well thought out. For almost $30 USD action figures I expected more. I really ike the art boxed still ones I will defiantly be looking into those once the price goes down too. :P

If you act now they can be as cheap as $4.50 on Amazon for the Shadowbolt and once it's in your hands you might be pleasantly surprised!

I like big and bulky so that was a selling point for me, but the weight and show-accurate look makes me love the smaller ones even more.

I knew how cheap they were, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to start collecting SOMETHING ELSE. I just got into g1, I have been hunting down the pearlized brushables, and I have been scouring for rare g1s and g4s at flea markets. I just didn't wanna get into something else.

Only a couple of the pearlies look that good to me cuz I still don't like the Hasbro toy head shape so I mainly buy whatever horses turn up at my favorite thrift store.

Here's my chance to lament:  I went there on the way back from somewhere yesterday instead of on the way out and the guy just ahead of me snagged a BaB Twilight Sparkle for $3.  I talked to him about it, and he said it's for his daughter who loves ponies.

I feel pretty bad that I am still disappointed that I didn't get there first even when I already have about 4 of those AND it's going to a child...I'm so greedy...not cool.

Not to worry, Gandalf will return to you at the turn of the tide.

I just got home from Target and saw a new Rarity playset (not GoH) with outfits that are like a butterfly hairclip and she "slips" into them it says...with a little track that inserts her, haha.  I noticed they drew her head a slightly different shape in the artwork on the back, and when I looked closely at the figure (holding a wonderbolt up next to her) it looks like at last Hasbro has corrected the head shape!!  Yay.  Looks like she can share sunglasses with the 'bolts.  I know sometimes they do Rarity with a slightly different head shape and nopony else gets changed so I hope this is a trend and the others will have corrected figures with better head shapes soon.

Thanks LunaMoonCustoms1212 and WaterRaven!  I wonder what good LOTR customs are out there...I have a few baits, hm...Moondancer's pose might work for Gandalf...baby pony for the hobbits, I don't have any bait babies though.  Maybe an Uruk-Hai oh, could try and do the Balrog to fight moondancer Gandalf but that's probably beyond my limited ability...

Tell me who else has been seen in the new sculpts??  Enough ponies that we might see them more??

I just dropped in on one of my two walmarts today and found a couple GoHs including Shadowbolts and lot of Spike the Dragon but he was $40!  Ouch!

Heard Shadowbolts has gone as low as $3.x on Amazon...haven't checked back in yet to see how those prices are doing.  At that price it might be worth getting a few to make some customs of the other G4 characters.

I just can't. I'm bummed, but this is the first MLP pony line that I am going to end up saying no to. I don't want ponies that don't have brushable hair. Show accuracy doesn't mean anything to me, so these aren't up my alley. My Walmart had everyone the other day, so I might be tempted for more.  I agree about missing brushable the thing for me is these ponies just look better. I wish they did have brushable hair but since I think G4 ponies look like stunted deer I'll take neat ones where I can find them.

I find that I like molded hair and brushable...hopefully they do some of the new sculpt with brushable hair.

Some actually like the current brushable mold?  I hadn't thought of that...if it does go away some will be disappointed and that would be sad.  There are a lot of them out there now though...and they did look great animated in the Toycracker.

What I really don't like is molded and brushable on the same pony like the McDonald's ponies tend to have...I completed a half-finished McD G3.5 custom I got in a lot where the molded tail had been cut off, and when she had hair for both mane and tail she looked much better.

LOTR ponies don't seem off topic to me...I love the bottom two especially!  Aragorn and Legolas....eh, maybe I shouldn't try cuz mine would never look like those.  I'd like to see the whole trilogy re-filmed in ponies now.

Maybe something to do with one of those $4 Shadowbolts would be to chop off its molded hair and put in brushable...hm it's always easy to think of things that would take a long time to do.

If I could make a request in this thread...?
Does anyone have BOTH a GOH Pinkiepie AND a "reboot brushable Pinkie" and could take a photo of their heads side-by side, both on side view/a profile?

I just got in some of the super bargain Amazon figures they had for GOH, like the Cheese/tank for 5 dollars or something.
I haaaaaaaated POP Cheese. But this one of him is so cute! The face is funny and happy and fun. I never thought I would get anything Cheese Sandwich. I actually like the face on the Shadowbolt too, & Dash /tortoise is good as well. I don't see why these heads couldn't have brushable hair installed.

It's been mentioned that "the reboot brushable happy faces (where the mouth is open) are -supposed- to be like the 'more active' GOH faces but I suspect they're not as good looking. I've never seen a reboot brushable in person & I didn't order the GOH Pinkie because I have too much Pinkie stuff already and 0 real desire for more. But, I would be very curious for a side by side comparison.

Maddie, this sculpt is out with brushable hair, I've seen Rarity's new fashion studio and she has this sculpt and brushable hair so you will have better looking stunted deer to choose from.

MintySocks would you like fries, I mean Chrysalis, with your Spike with lance and shield?  Well you get her anyway.

LadyMoondancer I just got Funko Big Mac at last, and he kinda fits right in with G1s...he's tall enough.  Eyelashes on big Spike??  Coooooool.

Yep, same. But he's $15 with free shipping on eBay, and between eBay and Paypal fees for that size box I can probably only do a little bit better than that if I want my money back. Maybe it's worth waiting until the market is less saturated, but that's a lot of space being taken up in the meantime.

I wish they did a version of these with brushable hair. I know they have those other poseable ponies but they lack the neck joint that makes these great.

Brushable hair for something with a neck joint is 100% doable. If they were able to do it with the G2 ponies then they can certainly do it with these. There is after all two different ways the hair can be added. The G2 Magic Motion ponies that had movable heads had the normal hair plugs in the hard plastic, but they could also so the same as normal horse models with one continuous weft. Sure it won't be show accurate either way but with some ponies their hair is designed like a normal horse's hair. Some of them don't really make sense on how they are designed, but I suppose that is why G4 has such rounded heads so that the hair doesn't have to go all the way down the neck on some of the ponies.

Maddie I got my NMM and Tia at Walmart where I could hand-pick the best paint jobs.  I noticed others were slightly varied and at Target the other figures had some slight variance in paint jobs too so it isn't inconceivable there could be some with awful paint jobs but most of them I saw looked pretty good.

Did you order them somewhere with a satisfaction guarantee?  Maybe you can swap them especially if they look worse than the ones pictured so far in this thread which are pretty typical of the ones I saw in stores.

Post Merge: January 07, 2017, 11:28:45 PM

There is no reason these can't be done with brushable hair and I had a look at the pics I took of the new brushable Rarity in her fashion runway playset with brushable hair and the new head sculpt:  she lacks the neck joint that lets the head go downward.

I had a look at the poseable Pinky that goes with the swan boat:  no neck joint.

Unless they do release some with the full neck joint and brushable hair, looks like we might have to cut off the molded hair and put in hair plugs for ourselves if we really want one.

I ordered them online since they are in sale and haven't seen them in stores. To be honest I'm too lazy to sit and pick through them all. They even accidentally sent me celestia twice and had to re-order Nightmare. Their eyes are off, Nughtmare has this glue like mould residue and there are weird paint jobs all over. The clear portion of the manes and tails look bad to me. There are just issues all over like the shoe/cap on one of them is glued offcsnter and there is the glaring line of where it should be.

I got my Guardians of Harmony Celestia right after Christmas and mine has paint flaws and issues also. There are several spots of paint missing or applied incorrectly on her mane and tail and even some paint or glue missing around her horn. There is also a black mark  on her cheek.

Does Celestia have a section of her tail by her front hooves that is completely devoid of paint? I know that is a design choice they made but even if that part is hidden from display it would have been nice if they connected to two strips of paint

She does. I wonder why Hasbro decided not to paint that part of her tail? I just checked mine again and most of the paint flaws seem to be in the pink stripe that runs through her mane and tail. There are several spots that should be pink that aren't.

You mean the part behind the right front foreleg right?  Mine has no pink there either, which I didn't notice.  That should have been painted, yes.  I also didn't notice until looking closer that the quality of the edge of the pink stripe is reasonably poor throughout...and the black paint around the eye could have a cleaner edge too.  My horn is glued in very nicely (still having some visible glue in the back) but the eye paint and glue joint at the horn were the areas I specifically picked this one for as the others in the store were less perfect in those areas.

It's just sloppy finishing work and not subjected to good quality control.  Funko figures have some major issues with the finishing work including gaps and flashing as do the Hikari figures sometimes.  My Hikari Rainbow Dash figure has arm and leg that haven't had the flashing cleaned off inside the joints before assembly causing gaps so big that there was almost no mating surface for the glue and an arm and a leg fell off.  It's in my project pile waiting for me to fix those flaws and reassemble.  Pretty unacceptable for something that cost a fortune.

Guardians of Harmony Celestia was pretty cheap so some finishing quality problems isn't surprising.

I got a Funko Big Mac finally that has really good finishing quality but the color is orange instead of red, and another one that promises to be red is on its way but all I can do is hope the finishing work is of good quality...it's why I kinda prefer to buy used where the actual item is pictured so there is less chance of bad surprises.

Post by: lostpony on January 09, 2017, 05:41:27 PM
True but Funko seems to have gone through a period where several of their figures had bad finishing/assembly work.  My G4 Rainbow Dash I got new a year ago has big gaps where the hair parts attach and the mold seam on her face not only has a lot of flashing, but the sides don't match up like the mold halves weren't positioned right before the pour so there is no fixing it.  I have some much older used Funkos that are much better.

I just got a new Big Mac and while his color is orange instead of red (and a lot of them seem to be that way judging by the product pictures) his seams are all tight and well finished.  I have a red one on the way and my hooves are crossed as to the assembly quality...

yeah, (almost) every brand decreases in quality after a few years. I still think that Funko is much better then Hasbro though, Hasbro needs to get it together and paint their toys with accuracy!

I don't really like the Funko toys.  They may be show accurate but there is just something blah about them.  Partly due to the lifeless "I'm staring straight ahead at nothing" pose.

The ones I've had in real life have had terrible paint and scratches / rough spots on their bodies.

Our Walmart finally got the posable GoH.. Shining Armor, Pinkie, Rainbow, and a Shadow Bolt... one of each.. I bought Shining Armor and well.. I had both good and eh to say about him XD

The knee joints on mine are really tight, and I just found out via watching another video you can pull his tail out and put it back in without damage lol. His Spear does not chip on really because the way they molded him and his shield doesn't really like the stay on =/
You kind of can get him to stand in a rearing pose but it's kind of awkward XD

I'd get another one on said JUST to experiment XD

Igot Shining Armor as well, and he's adorable and awesome, although I have the same complaints sd_dreamcrystal mentioned...but thus is the first G4 I've bought in years, I had no idea I would like this as much as I do. It's just fun to play with, haha. It's a little armored knight pony!

I like the shapes of their sculpts- but it is annoying that they all have the same pose and stare straight ahead. And yes, the QC issues can be numerous on the big ponies.

But if they had gone with that sculpt and then made them more dynamic and smaller-  that would be ideal to me!

I am not buying any of these. I don't mean toys should be separated for girls or boys, but I feel like MLP has diverted far from what it originally was. These feel like action figures.

Nope. I'm starting to go back to G1 more and more moneywise.

Also, I feel like these are to cash in on the brony fandom and not collectors of what they originally loved. No offense to anyone, this is just how I personally feel.
Title: Re: Guardians of Harmony toys

They ARE action figures, Dazzlekitty.

I disagree about them being for bronies, I think they are for 8 year old boys, at last!  Thanks Hasbro.

Have you seen the new brushables and sets?  Fashion runway and sleepover themes etc, and no spears or artillery.

So...do you want to buy back any of your G1s now?  haha

Post by: Jocelyn on January 19, 2017, 09:10:38 AM
I personally love that they are action figures. I didn't expect to love them, but Shining Armor turned out to be so much fun. It's a very different kind of enjoyment from regular MLP. G4 has felt stagnant for me since 2012, so this is like a huge breath of fresh air. I'm thinking of getting the Rainbow and Tank next, and I hope they do an Applejack somewhere down the line.

I'm neither a brony or an 8 year old boy and G1s still outnumber every other gen in my herd, so I hope my Pony card is still intact :)
Title: Re: Guardians of Harmony toys
Post by: lostpony on January 19, 2017, 11:19:57 AM
There's a funny video making fun of bronies where one brings home Pinky and Twilight and they are talking about how they are going to be loved by a little girl and have their hair combed etc, and when they find out they've been brought home by a brony, Pinky says in a severe tone:  "We are meant for 8 year old girls.  What does he want with us?"  I'd put a link but the video gets mean after that, but the beginning is great.

That's what I was referring to with the boy-focus on the action figures....of course, all ponies are also for everyone including me but first and foremost I think GoH are intended to include boys and of course girls who like a less foofy play theme.  With all the fighting in G4 (and G1) it's really great to have fighting ponies and even just for flying poses etc...all the fighting gear comes off so they can do anything you want them to.  That they can barely stand up in rearing poses shows they are meant to be played with first, and posed by collectors second.
Title: Re: Guardians of Harmony toys
Post by: LadyMoondancer on January 19, 2017, 11:32:10 AM
I don't think they're boy-focused, although obviously Hasbro wants to attract boys as well as girls to the brand.

They are action-oriented, certainly.  Which a lot of girls are into.
Title: Re: Guardians of Harmony toys
Post by: Wardah on January 19, 2017, 11:51:53 AM
I think they saw how popular the DC Super Hero Girls are and wanted a piece of that market but didn't want to have to beg Disney to let them develop a Marvel version. And of all the "girl targeted" IPs Hasbro owns MLP actually has an action element so it makes sense. And hey if it makes little boys less embarrassed to enjoy MLP that's a bonus.

Anyways the Brony market has kinda died down a bit so it wouldn't make sense to market towards them.
Title: Re: Guardians of Harmony toys
Post by: lostpony on January 19, 2017, 12:12:44 PM
Action is for boys and girls get to play too (barely)...according to norms, not according to me or my mom....but foofy stuff is for girls and boys that play too get teased.

I'm all for girls and boys having full access to all the same toys and this line is a huge step in making ponies for boys and girls both.

I much approve, Hasbro.

I think I put my foot in my mouth. Sorry. :(

I just had a bad experience with bronies once and I guess I kinda get a little ribbed when I think someone caters to them. I was on a Facebook group and we got into a discussion and I showed a pic of my collection and they called me a loser and looking at my profile pic (I'm a bigger person) they asked me "Shouldn't you be at a buffet or something?"

I guess I am pidgeon-holing where I shouldnt be.

Yeah, I kind of have a chip on my shoulder that shouldn't likely be there. Sorry. :/

I'm kind of a hypocrite anyways. I was tempted to pick up the Queen Chrysalis one when I saw her in TRU but put her back because I felt I shouldn't.

I am the king of putting feet in mouth, don't even try to compete with me!  It's Ok I'm sure no one got the wrong idea....we know you never mean anything bad.

That's the sort of experience that makes me bristle when people try and assign me that label.  I am me, not any label.  Except for "trekkie".  I like that label.  Anything else I disregard.

You know there is a grander version of the Queen in this line right?  More like the Princesses than the action figures.  You might like it better than the jointed one.  Last I checked she was pretty reduced in price on Amazon.

Heart891101,  Now I'm never getting "angry ponies" out of my head.  Love it!

It's like Angry Birds only with whipped cream and a cherry on top cuz it's ponies.  What no brushables?  stock selection seems to be an issue with ponies.  My Walmart took its time getting in the big Spike but when they did they had a massive quantity and they sold him down to a few pieces at $39. before marking the rest to $10 to clear him out.

Dang JazzMatazz that sucks that you couldn't have action figures.  Did it make you want the less girly things even more because of deprivation do you think?

"But Mom they ARE girly, they're just angry ponies".  "ok then as long as they are girly" = problem solved.

um, sorry.  I'm just really enjoying some of the posts here....

I went back to my walmart today and found one last $10 giant Spike, with a pretty beat up box but the goodies are all in there so Yay! I have Spike now.  Also got a so-soft G4 Rainbow dash for $9, not really sure why but, whatever.

(off topic I just found a G2 in the wild at thift today Yaaaay)

GoH Shining Armor is pretty cool right??  Mine's still in the box, for all my GoH stuff somehow the little Shadowbolt is my favorite to play with.

both my walmarts are chuck full of first wave GoH toys and old wave EQG minis ,  crystal castles and bagged cheapo G4 singles. some G4.5 ponies too.   Even if they wanted to get more they wouldnt have any shelf space.

My walmarts too. My target has a dwindling supply of the same old stuff so it's like yt? hey just arent moving or maybe theyre just not stocking too fast.

Isnt this sort of shelf stagnation pretty typical with mlp these days? Lps disney barbie and the various monstery dolls keep revolving just fine, it seems to me.

I don't think they're boy-focused, although obviously Hasbro wants to attract boys as well as girls to the brand.

They are action-oriented, certainly.  Which a lot of girls are into.

Agreed. My daughter isn't a brony, or an 8 year old and she loves her Prince Shining Armor and Shadow Bolt. Now if only we could find Queen Chrysalis for her. Girls love Action too.

Same here, stuff is not moving, and the space for them is sooo tiny . About 1/12 of a shelf tiny area.

The multiple changeling set seems to be slightly later and much rarer than Twilight with changeling

Title: Re: Guardians of Harmony toys
Post by: lostpony on May 03, 2017, 05:03:10 PM
Chrysalis with two changelings right?  haven't seen it in person yet.  As opposed to the other sets that have just one changeling:  twilight and generic thorax, the Queen vs Spike

The Queen is more of the statue type in the multi-changeling set, like Celestia, different from her jointed version with Spike...I don't know if the drones are different or the same.  Just going by one glance at a picture and memory so hopefully I've got this right.

Applejack is very cute! That is the figure I've wanted ever since I first started watching FiM :)

I checked the Target near me, and they finally got GoH toys in...but they were all the Rainbow Dash/Shadowbolt wave. They just got those within the past two weeks, too. I figure I'll have to wait quite a while for that one to get Applejack!

I have Queen Chrysalis and the changelings set and it is more like a statue with no articulation.

Then you'll have to get the Spike set.

Ponyfan, how bout the drones with the statue, they are different from the one with Twily right? or no

Yes the Changelings with Chrysalis are different than the Twilight vs Changeling set.  :)  They are smaller and attached to the green power stuff surrounding Chrysalis.

I am really having more fun with these guys than I have had with ponies for years! I finally got AJ and Pinkie Pie today. Pinkie's expression is cute, but AJ is completely adorable :) The little scarf really completes her look, I think. There is something a little awkward about the appearance of the neck joint, but the scarf covers it perfectly. She is definitely my favorite, and I'm not just saying that cause she's my favorite pony!

They are really fun to play with...I feel like a kid again. This is the exact kind of thing kid me would have been all over. If I see Daring Do again, I may pick her up too.

Such a fun little scene you have posed there!  Everypony's in character and as usual there's Pinky "breaking the fourth wall".

I have all those except AJ but mine don't have that much fun.  I'm going to have to have a little chat with them about that...maybe they're just waiting for AJ and Daring Do who will definitely be getting recruited at some point.
