Jem Comics-Are they worth a try
« on: February 21, 2016, 01:12:03 PM »
Hi,

I'm a big fan of the original Jem and the Holograms cartoon and recently saw there is a comic book series. Is it any good and does it consider fans of the original Jem?

I highly recommend this comic to both fans of the old series and new fans! It does an amazing job of really taking in the 80's spirit of the old comic while feeling modernized at the same time. The art is much more diverse but still bright and full of flair. There's a little more realism in nice details that I appreciate (the girls look messier offstage, less makeup etc) that just highlights the fun vibe of the musical scenes. Please give it a try!!!

Oh my gosh, it is the best.  The.  Best!

I have been reading comics for 25-30 years now and it is by far the best comic series I have ever gotten.  The art work is adorable.  The modern take on the characters is just amazing.  The stories are great.  It is so positive and diverse and complex.  It's not just Jem are good, Misfits are bad.  The characters are well developed with motivations for their actions.  The characters are all shapes and sizes and races and all are considered beautiful and worthy of affection and success.  2 of the main characters are gay and it's literally no big deal, they just are.

I flipping LOVE this comic.

Oh yes! I haven't read all of the comics yet, but I do like most of what I've seen. My favorite part is the art. So many comics have (in my opinion) sub-par artwork, but the Jem art is so pretty! And don't worry -- the comics have nothing to do with that abomination of a movie.

@Xeevee - the original storyline was never Holograms = good Misfits = bad, either.

The Jem list I'm on has a mixed view on the comics. I haven't read them myself, though one of my long term Jem friends is into them. Some call them rushed fanfiction in terms of the plot development, and others think they're very true to the spirit of the original. I think it depends on how you view the original as to whether you like or don't like the comic take.

For me, I really like the way in which the original characters were defined down to tiny, nuanced details. If it doesn't make sense within the original canon of the cartoon, it's fanfiction to me, and I know the comic has inserted some of these ideas which are not supported by original canon, in recreating the set-up. Because of that, I haven't bothered to read the comics. And, honestly, because it does depend on how you see the original characters and how flexible you are with embracing a brand new interpretation on them, I would definitely not listen to everyone else's views. I'd just pick one up and look at them for yourself :D

One thing I learned when getting into the Jem fandom was that what everyone told me to expect was not what I saw, and what everyone else thought of the characters wasn't my default interpretation. I think they are so nuanced and offer so many possibilities for interpretation, your own view of it is most important.

Truly I LOVE the new comics! I love the art and the stories/characters-  a really good series!

My only complaint is that they are very short compared say to a Japanese Manga-  but they aren't any shorter than any other US comic, alas.

I've been meaning to start this series since IDW has done such a good job with Transformers.

I heard someone's done a great job on TMNT with a newer comic, and I want to say that's IDW's one, too!

Everything everyone else says about the book is true. When the book was first announced I was concerned how a property so reliant on music would translate to an audio-less medium but, I can't describe how it works but it does. My only concern would be with any collected editions that may not include the one-shots (Holiday special, Valentines special, Outrageous Annual) or not include them in proper order. But thats what Premieum Hardcover collections are for.

And really, IDW has been Fantastic with almost everything they've done with Pony, Star Trek and G.I. Joe being their only weak links.
