Title: Texas Pony Fair???
Post by: Sweet_Stuff on November 27, 2015, 11:31:21 AM
We need a pony fair in the Lone Star State!!

Just sayin'

How does one get started...? I'd love to participate.. or even help start one, but my resources alone are kinda limited... I just think it would be great, plus there are lots of fantastic locations for hosting here in the state!. Thoughts? Where are my TX peeps at?!  :frolic: :frolic:

usually you start out with a pony meet, and then it grows. :)  The big US Pony Fair is run by a staff who pick the location, raise funds, pay for the hall/meeting rooms... it costs a TON!  A Pony meet can be done anywhere, though; they are usually one day things at someones house or a park, but some are held in event halls. The local one here was at a room rented through Holiday Inn, one of their meeting rooms. :)

Yeah, I guess I meant Meet and not a Fair
There's gotta be more Texans like me who are interested in doing something..  :) :enthralled:

I would love a Fair here hahah! xD

I agree we 10000% though! We need more pony stuff here, especially considering how many people collect here and how many stores sell ponies! We have a few pony conventions, but meeeh I want something besides G4! I would love to meet people sooooo bad!

Yesss..  ^.^ one of my TX pony friends (summerday) on here would be on board. Another one who lives like an hour away from me is the admin over a FB group called MLP TX fans or something like that... The group is not very active though, sadly..
She has a family and a business selling toys so I'm sure that takes up much of her time..

I'm sure is an interest, there's just no one talking about it..?? -sigh- We need to get one started!  :frolic: Do you have any other TX friends who would be interested? I know of possibly three other girls.. I'm gonna mention it to Natalie again and I'll follow up with you.  :)

You might have better luck drumming up interest in a Texas meet if you ask a mod to move this topic to the main Corral where more people will see it. :) Since the Pony Fairs sub-forum is for discussions about the official MLP Fair(s), things are pretty slow and quiet in here right now... minus the finger-drumming and foot-tapping.

Oh nice!
Austin would be a great location to hold a pony meet. :D Texas has a lot of great cities to host.  ;)

Let's do it! I'm excited!  :frolic:
Do you have contacts from the BFF who could possibly help start a TX Pony Meet?

Heya, unfortuantely I don't have any contacts from bff. There is another convention in Dallas called "Nightmare Nights" that is still running next year. I would post the link but I dunno if i'm allowed to.
I haven't been to it but it looks neat.  :good:
Texas has alot of good cities for a pony meet :) I would not mind traveling to any of them. ^_^

I go to Nightmare Nights,  I think in Arlington! Its close to Anime POP and the Loving Hut vegan chinese buffet! I didn't go this year because Enterplay's wasn't there, I like free promo cards xD plus my husband wanted to take me to Florida! I love all the customs people sell there, its too bad all those people will probably not ever get to sell their stuff at the pony fair.... I feel like it will never come this far south.

It would seriously be nice to meet some fellow Texas collectors on mlparena for a change!!!! We can laugh about how everyone thinks its "tooo hot to live here" to want to visit! xD We can also laugh at how weird our weather is LOL as well as go to awesome stores nearby! I fell like Texas, especially DFW, is soooooo overlooked and forgotten about. Its so FUN here! We have so many awesome restraunts and grocery stores from so many cultures its epic! Especially those Asian markets that sell a ton of awesome Japanese candy most people pay $10+ to import! xD Aaaaah and we have so many malls we could choose from to meet up at! I could show you guys my favorite thrift stores, I  have one close that is a G3 goldmine every time!

I can easily see DWF, San Antonio, Austin to be awesome locations. :D Tyler and Houston might be too humid, but any place just to have one and put TEXAS on the pony map would be amazing!

^ tell ya what Twilight Pink! If we ever meet up I will give you a baggie of the ones I have! I only want to keep a couple, and there is like 20+ hanging out on my water heater because they are magnetic LOL! If you are ever in McKinney, over by Allen and Fairview, on the super Eastern part of McKinney across I75 they have this AWESOME thrift store that always seems to have G3s! I even found the Castle playset with the little dance stage fold out there for $12!! I didn't buy it because the battery cartridge was blue and fuzzy and heck xD I shouldn't have passed on it because I found out it was an International exclusive!!!!!! :faint: That SAME thrift store had a big brother, original Holt MH doll (the blue boy who is rare), disney animator dolls, neopets plush, the collector porcelin madame alexander dolls, and 70s Ariel dolls. That thrift store is my favorite part about my move to Texas!

....and people have the nerve to tell me there is qoute, "nothing good in Texas". Like dude, so many international toys end up here! There are a zillion people who move to DFW from other countries! Omg especially in McKinney, Allen, and Plano!

That thrift store sounds Amazing!  I need to make a little trip there because the only toys I ever find at the thrift stores in my area are Beanie Babies (though I like Beanie Babies so that's okay lol). And I agree with you Princess Lala, the weather here can get a bit crazy but it's still nice  :)

Hmm, I have family who live in McKinney and I'm going to be in that area soon.  Can you pm me the name of the thrift store?

I rarely find ponies at thrift stores though I have a local flea market were they occasionally turn up.  Never run across anything international though!

The thrift store is Plaza Thrift, and there are certain day of the week where the  good stuff pans out! They had Quarterback before, that's the only G1 I have ever noticed!

I probably wouldn't be able to attend any pony Texas meets due to me being a baby and hating driving but I hope you guys can plan a fun one  :)

I've had pony luck in my area on rare occasions. One place still has two G1 playsets (I bought all the ponies they had) and I'd really like to get them but I just have no room  :( I mainly find G1 and a few G3, even found a My Pretty Pony in my town!

Yay, more. Texas peeps! I wish it could be hosted in El Paso, but too far for you, I guess. I know a flea market where half of my G1 collection is from LOL. And we have very nice attractions too, like the mountains, Elephant Rock, Rio Grande (* cough* Dry).....

Yeah, I'm excited if it is in the summer!

Definitely interested in a TX meet, and also gonna throw in Austin as a great place for one. There are PLENTY of places to do it in Austin. Even the local comic shops would probably be willing to lend some space for a few hours. There's also a lot of smaller hotels that would probably have inexpensive conference rooms, if everyone attending the meet was able to chip in!
Title: Re: Texas Pony Fair???

Omg YES Austin is the place! I will argue they have the best food selection as far as restraunts and grocery stores I have ever seen in the US- hands down! Its serious competition with parts of Cali as far as variety! Also the best radio stations! (I love the one that plays norwegian black metal!) I love the bat migration every where you go on the little boat ride! x3

Waco is also a great place! Also aaaahahaaaaaah.....Fazolis is somewhere around there!

Whoever says there's nothing to do in Texas has NEVER been to DFW or Austin- especially Austin. I love Austin!

We could meet up somewhere simple like a mall or a restaurant! *echoing Fazolis*

If it were to be in Austin, I could look into hotels/ convention space here with space to rent. We'd have to get a head count and possible dates to figure out a price but I'd certainly be able to help if someone decides to host a meet.

The hotel I had in mind is kinda creepy...as in, half of it is vacant.. ::cue spooky music::  but the upside is that it has a great conference room, pool and entertainment area; and those traveling don't have to stay on site - there are several other, fully opened hotels around close by. I've stayed there before, and it's nice, as long as you don't pay attention to the closed part..ha. You can wander around (crazy creepy at night) but I wouldn't use the on-site washer and dryer!  :lookround: I have stayed there and I survived so it's fine.. Not trying to scare anyone!

Anyways, I haven't investigated anything recently though...looks like we have a lot of votes for Austin as the first meet's location, but I'm trying to make it close to home because I don't like traveling by myself...  >_<

There is a beaaaauuuuuutiful one in Arlington I know of called Triple Crown hotel? I stayed there for Nightmare Nights (g4 con) and the rooms were pretty decent! :-3

I am just daydreaming about meeting all of you guys!!!!!! I think about it a lot a work to be honest! I'm pretty shy in person and kinda weird but I'm excited! I had no idea there were THIS many Texans here! And they don't want to have a g1 pony fair here um whyy!?  Man at least we can arrange a meet! I would try to help the best I could as well, granted my husband and I are working two jobs!

I'm also really surprised at the number of Texans/ Austin people are on the Arena! It'd be great to have a meet down here since the Fair seems to be staying in the east the last few years and it's hard for some of us here to get to. So what are the next steps to make this happen? :)
Title: Re: Texas Pony Fair???
Post by: ghouldilocks on December 10, 2015, 04:57:18 PM
I probably wouldn't be able to make it to a meet, but you guys might be over-thinking things a bit, lol. You're not organizing a con here!  :silly:

If you don't mind me offering a suggestion, though, it seems to me the easiest (and cheapest!) way to go about something like this might be to find a public park that has those covered picnic areas for birthday parties and stuff. I mean, if it went on for a couple of years successfully, and folk from neighboring states got interested, it could potentially evolve into a regular convention, but there hasn't even been a first meet yet  ;)

A lot of low-to-mid-priced chain restaurants also have private dining areas for groups that you can book in advance, but I don't know whether that would be cheaper than or about the same as renting out a conference room at a hotel. You do need to be careful with booking private dining rooms for parties, though - my dad has had experience with this while organizing holiday dinners for his high school alumni group, and some restaurants have a special set menu for groups who book the private room - it's usually only a small selection from the regular menu, and sometimes is more expensive (probably to offset the cost of any damages to the room if the group gets rowdy...I wouldn't be surprised if that has happened before, which is unfortunate).

Anyway, just another suggestion you guys could look into.

You started this thread! haha be bold and name the city where you want the meet to be! Besides, I think one major point of the localized meet-ups is to give an opportunity to meet up for people who want to, but maybe can't go to the Fair for whatever reason. So it defeats your purpose if you can't even go to the meet you wanted to organize!

If you host it, they will come  :P ;)

haha, see, again, I think you guys are REALLY over-thinking this! You don't need to be rich to organize a local meet - that's part of the point! So people can get together without having to spend money on getting to the Fair or a con.  :silly:

For price point, meeting at a park is your best option, and I know others have done it this way, if I remember correctly from previous meet-up threads. You could even just have it at someone's home - if you live in apartment building or complex, there is sometimes a community lounge area where you could meet.  It could also be just a pot-luck thing to keep the cost low.

Running a search on the forum, you can look through threads about past meets to get ideas if you aren't sure. For example, there was a small meet at someone's house a few years ago in Houston:  http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,285783.0.html (http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,285783.0.html).

I'm rich in ponies! :-3 And chocolate! Ha-ha I went out and bought more Gylian seapony chocolates today after talking about them here xD

We can meet up anywhere guys! Even if its a Starbucks! *imagines coffee + excitement over ponies mix will get us kicked out of restraunts* LOL!  :P I wish we had some kind of cool pony resturaunt/cafe here! I think that's the only thing Texas doesn't have! xD There is a comic book store called Madness Comocs and Games in Plano Texas that hosts MTG, Pokemon, and sometimes MLP TCG tournies- its very huge! I have always imagined that would be a cool place to meet up plus they sell ponies!

I like to go to Tyler in March to hunt for those tastey Morel mushrooms! I swear that's the only place they grow here! I also love a river there in Winter because there are cool cretaceous ocean fossils in there!!!

::ponders: hmmm! :)

And what is miss Sweet_Stuff pondering about????!!!

If its the comic book store, maybe I can help out? You said you lived in Tyler so its not super far away! ALSO OMG there is this AMAAAAZING Asia MArket near that comic book store that sells the best selection of JApanese candy around! Also there is this a million resturaunts, both fast food, common chain-dinners, and specialty resturaunts like Eastern Indian, Authentic Italian, Japanese, Mongolian, etc! *goes to happy place*

If its about the mushrooms, maybe we can meet up somewhere in the Spring! xD Those things are delicious deep-fried in beer batter! -goes off topic because is excited about Texas stuff-

Oh, hehe I didn't think about hosting it at a place like Starbucks! That would be awesome.. There are even some great parks around the area too. :)

Is there a Panera Bread at any of y'all's areas? There could be a meet up there!

I'm not opposed to it being somewhere outside of Austin. Was just suggesting it because I know there's a lot of great food and locations around here that would be pretty well suited to a meet up! My complex has a lounge area that would work nicely too. But if you guys wanna host it elsewhere that's also fine, I'd be happy to have any kind of pony event within a couple hours' trip.

TX Pony Meet Up!  :cheer:

Tyler, 2016

Do y'all think it would be good to have it during Spring Break or would summer work better, or does it matter to you?

I would host it at my place but it's way too small and messy..
Thoughts on actual site? Restaurant with private room? I can take RSVPs and we can bring ponies, games, etc.? Other ideas/thoughts?

I'd be interested in attending.  For my work I would need to know when to ask off and then just hope that there aren't any conflicts.

My mom and grandma are very familiar with the area.  I'll have to ask them if they have any suggestions for venues.

We should have little gifts for everyone! Like we can make some fun-size candy goodie bags with MLP stickers and Ooooo maybe do a pony raffle?! I have plenty of excellent condition G3's we could use as prizes!

fwiw, I'm not sure a coffee house is the best option for a pony meet - most coffee houses (that I've seen, anyway) don't really have that kind of space, and most people who hang out in coffee houses tend to expect a quieter, more calm atmosphere, conducive to things like studying, reading, or writing.

Thanks for the input, CM!

Yes, that's definitely something to consider. If we have a pretty big group, I'm afraid a Starbucks might not work..

Thank y'all for the input and suggestions. Keep 'em coming! :) I got overwhelmed because I was making this way way bigger than it needs to be... We gotta start somewhere! ;) I love the suggestion of having a pony raffle (s) and goodie bags of some kind...I may have some G1 ponies to give as prizes as well :)
I'm going to look at calender, start getting a list of things / attendees together and tentatively say it will be Summer 2016 in Tyler.

Sunset, let me know what y'all come up with as far as venues. Price checks would be helpful, too. I haven't started actively looking into any prices myself. I was leaning towards just making a reservation at a restaurant with a nice private table - that way food will be covered and we don't have to worry about bad weather situations if we held it outside..?

@clawdeenmewleen LOL woah, I'm jealous! What coffee stores are you going to that are quiet!? XD No matter what coffee shops I go to every one either has a handful of screaming toddlers walking around getting in peoples way or there is ALWAYS those annoying large groups of teenagers laughing very loud at nonsense LOL! I see people with laptops using the wifi , that's the only relaxing thing I see at those places. Maybe its because of my area? Frisco is full of those spoiled annoying people after all.

I still think the comic book store in Plano would be awesome venue and there is a Cicis right down the shopping center if im not mistaken! Would be a fun place to eat! I wonder what places in Tyler have to offer! In usually there in the nature and occasionally I will stop by like a Braums on the way home! xD

Oh my heck, Houston collector if you can make it I would be soooo excited! I think you have the biggest mlp all-gen collection in all of Texas! It would be so cool to meet ya! We've been chatting for years about ponies!!

If its on the DFW metro I will seriously be willing to help out with anything I possibly can!!! I reaaaaly want a pony meet to happen here!
:frolic:

I will take a tally of who would be interested in coming and make an RSVP deadline. For now, I know it will be Summer 2016 in Tyler. This is a Texas Meet up focusing on the 'early years' (G1 - G3) -- but any collector is welcome. I'm gonna say right now that I am chemically sensitive, so I ask that guests refrain from wearing a lot of perfume / cologne, or better even, none at all..hate to be Debbie Downer but I have to let y'all know..

Alrighty..now that's out of the way, I'm going to start looking at restaurants / venues places. Here are my suggestions:

Olive Garden -- not so much for the food (ha) but - they do have a pretty nice private table / room. It's not huge - but it will work.

Villa Montez - Latin American restaurant (former mansion-turned restaurant) with gorgeous 'large party/private/semi-private' rooms. I've been several times, and their food is excellent.

Ground Zero Comics - they recently moved into a larger place and it's gotten better.. but I haven't been since they moved to new location . . . Plus it's close to Villa Montez if we wanted to eat lunch there and then do pony stuff at the comics place..

Additional suggestions -- someone said Panera's Bread -- we do have one in Tyler, but I haven't been..so not sure how good their food is, or what their space is like. Starbucks was also suggested, but all the Starbucks here are super small and wouldn't really do good with a large(er) group.

Please PM me if you would be interested in attending. I hope to make a new post with more concrete details once everything is finalized. :)

So, I did ask my mom for suggestions but she said it's been too long since she lived there to be able to give up to date suggestions.  Then I remembered that my uncle still live in the area and asked him for suggestions.  He said he would look into it but I haven't heard back from him yet.

Ok, thanks for the update, Sunset! :)  :ohyeah:
I can't think of any other restaurants that have good (and not *too* expensive) food and private/semi-private rooms..Nothing is set in stone just yet so if your uncle has any other recommendations, we'll take them!
