I wanna start needle felting, a few questions
« on: June 20, 2012, 03:38:42 PM »
So, I have been wanting to do this for over 5 years now. I have invested in one needle, a small bit of wool roving, and a foam block.

I made a sheep during christmas time, but it didn't seem right. I don't know, like it wasn't tight enough. I can't help but thing I didn't poke it enough? How firm should these be? Do people put some kind of support system (wire?) in long limbs?

And it kind of seemed easy in a way. Is it really just stabbing the felt over and over? adding a bit more, and stab stab stab? (I assume it tangles the fibers together). It seems almost dangerous! How do you not stab yourself?? I'm really clumsy, so if there are any safety things... I would like to know.

So, I guess it's like an addition process. So what if you made an area too big, and you'd like to make it a tiny bit smaller? Is that possible.

Or heck , any good videos on you tube? I'm really the type of person to just jump dive into things (short attention span, hate to read), but it seems kind of simple, and I wanna make sure I'm not missing anything important.

  thanks in advance

I have seen a couple of examples from our members in regard to felting, and I have some awesome ones on another board.  I bet if you checked out the members who had done some posts and PMed them they might be able to help.  Here is a link to a Chief by rainbowstars in the art forum - http://mlparena.com/mlp/index.php/topic,299296.0.html

My MIL has done it. I'm not sure how though. I know it involves these funny looking needles though.

My friend makes felt roses and yes, it is just stabby stab stab :)
She uses a plastic stencil thing so you stab within the plastic frame and therefore wont stab your fingers.
Also - insider tip - you don't need to buy expensive foam blocks - she uses kitchen sponges lol

Yeah the foam came with my needle, it's super tiny (which is also why I fear of stabbing myself). Well it's good to know that I'm on the right track. .... :3 Thanks!

And thanks for the tip about the kitchen sponge ~

I've made a few needle felted items!

They are not super hard, but hold their shape well.  I have no internal structure, no wire, it is all felt.   And yes, you can just add more where you want it and 'stab, stab, stab'!    If you make an area too big you can stab it a lot (it will get harder) and it should go down.

Some people prefer very hard felted items, others soft.   Just make it however you like it best.  :)

Aww, thank you!   I made the deer for my Dad and a cat for my Mom.   I haven't made any felted critters in a while though.   I should probably make more sometime.  I tend to go from thing to thing, I guess I just have no focus.  lol!

WOW those are amazing!!

I decided I wanted to try needle felting as well. I love doing a variety of crafts and this sounded like a good one to try. :) Although I have to admit I'm rather discouraged now. I've been stabbing this purple wool for almost an hour now and all I've managed to do is make a lopsided fluffy shape.
