Title: G3 Hair Tinsel?
Post by: Glistening Rainlight on June 17, 2022, 10:15:40 PM
I would really love to get my hands on some replacement tinsel for my G3 ponies but everywhere I look I only find replacements for G1 and G2 ponies, including on the Preservation Project. I don't know if no one's noticed the difference or there's just no supply, but it would break my heart to use G1-style tinsel for G3 restorations and customs when I've always loved the G3-style tinsel.

Try as I might, I can't find a suitable replacement for this kind of tinsel on my own. Can we use our collective powers to try and track something down?

So what's the difference? (My apologies for photo quality, it's the best I can do at night.)

In the first image I've used two G1 ponies, but the tinsel is the same for G2s. It's flat, shiny, completely opaque, and the colors are vibrant and wildly different depending on the pony.

In the second image is a G3 pony with tinsel. It's flat, holographic, transparent, and is the same on every pony. It's a bit difficult to properly capture its traits on camera, but when the light hits it it mostly appears to have a pale blue-green color, but will show other pale colors depending on the angle. It reminds me of the tinsel you find in an easter basket.

(Gosh this makes it look like I just have tinsel ponies everywhere haha, but um..... well, maybe I kinda do. I love tinsel ponies.)

Hmm. I looked around and you're right. The clear plastic tinsel doesn't seem to be available. The only thing I found were curtains on Amazon, but the individual strands are way too big for ponies.

I need to be somewhere today but when I get back I'll continue my search.

I know it's called iridescent tinsel. Here's a link to a sell page. Hope that helps. It seems to be still in stock. https://shimmerlocks.com/opal

Oh, wow, I checked Shimmerlocks as well and also missed this! :whoa:
I'm a little confused by it being pink though! I really can't tell much pink in the originals, I wonder if the Shimmerlocks option just doesn't look pink once you get it separated maybe?

There used to be a Skulky (sulky?) Thread that was a perfect match. I unfortunately lost my spool and they don't seem to sell it anymore (only tinted metallic) but I'll poke around and post if I find it.

Ohh, I see. So I guess that's why the Preservation Project only lists Sulky then I guess. That makes sense.

Iridescent film is very dependent on the color of things around it and the kind of light hitting it. Behind a white background, it's noticeably pink and behind a black background, it's noticeably green. ;)

Haha, thanks BlackCurtains. ^^

You can still get the iridescent Sulky thread in an assortment from their site, but I don't see it sold individually there or on the Jo Ann site either.

You can also use fly fishing tinsel.

I think I saw individual rolls of the iridescent Sulky in the past 6 months or so at a physical Jon-Ann's location.  Might be worth a shot to try that if you live near one.

Uf you have as big craft shop (like Hobbycraft in the UK), check out the thread section. I love Hobbycraft's tinsel threads!!!. They have an iridescent one for G3s, & several colours for other Ponies. It's the nearest to actual Pony tinsel I've found yet
