Any carousel lovers around?
« on: August 26, 2013, 12:34:29 PM »
Since I am on vacation and we where basically staying home this time around, I decided it was time to hit two closer to home beauties.  One old one who has been restored and reopened and one new one that managed to survive flooding from Sandy.  I am working on getting all the photos from each one loaded to Pisca I have the links to the albums listed but not all photos are there yet.

For now movies for you first up B&B Carousell of Coney Island - this a Carmel machine with a Mengals Mechanism, the one lead horse is actually an Illions armored.  I have a second video of this machine taken while riding but I for now gave up on loading it because it was taking forever!  This one used to be out on the main drag but got moved to on the boardwalk, it is what I call a park paint restoration, loads of detail was not painted on the horses and colors for the most part are fairly flat.  I did snag a postcard of it in it's old location if anyone wants to see I can scan it.  The new building is lovely and it really catches the ocean breeze.  The band organ still works and is fun due to the front actually opening and closing depending upon the notes in the song played.  We actually hit this one second.  Here is the link for when I get some photos up, for now it is an empty album - https://picasaweb.google.com/CrocusCottage/BAndBCarousellConeyIsland

Jane's Carousel - in the DUMBO area of Brooklyn, which is between the Brooklyn and Williamsberg Bridge, right on the East River and in a "glass house"!  A lovely PTC built in 1922, it is small, (3 row) and slow but still just a stunning machine.  The machine has lovely paint work, but sadly I do not think they sealed this guys enough, some where showing signs of wear especially to their leaf in the saddle areas.  I loved the outer rows, I had not seen this pose before in person so that was so cool.  I am in love with one solid chestnut.  So much so, that if I can get my act together in the next few years I want to do an OS of it with the owners permission and sell it to make some money for that carousels up keep.  The machine has only been in this location since 2011.  During Sandy the carousel was flooded, but not the platform or horses, their is a haunting shot on the internet of it lite and surrounded by water. The motors and such where affected though, not sure if that is why it ran so slow or if it was just that machines speed.   I have gotten some photos of it uploaded already, here is a link to what I have so far - https://picasaweb.google.com/CrocusCottage/JaneSCarouselBrooklynNY

I like carousels. Thanks for sharing. I've never seen one with actual hair for tails. Do you know if they are real horse hair or synthetic?

They are real hair tails, just like they would have come with from the factory way back when.  There is no hard and fast date for when the carvers went from the hair to carved tails, it was more a maintenance and cost issue then anything else.

I love carousels, especially when they have fanciful animals. My city is getting a glass-encased one by the river. I can't wait to seeit!

The August25 album doesn't work. The B&B looks awesome though, do they let adults ride the carousel?

I will check the permissions on it.  And yes both carousel allow anyone to ride.  But B&B has one horse no one is allowed to ride.

Wow! real hair tales?
I think I've been on one or two with synthetic tales that where cut quite short.

Unfortunately the local fair doesn't have a merry go round most years but I'm very fond of them.

Good luck with that I'm England based!
Unfortunately i do fear that the horses might of been replaced with time or simply get swapped out for a different company.
They are unfortunately unlikely to have such permanence here than over the pond.
