Apparently the line did not do well at all because they were only made for one year. I think what happened is that My little Ponies werealso being sold/imported from hong kong and those were the hot selling items while takaras didn't really even take off.(takaras debuted in 1985 while as we know the regular line got started in 1982) I guess its like airing a brand new show at the same time when another VERY popular show has the same time slot. Everyone is going to watch the more popular show and only a few will try and tape both.
Why are real Takaras so rare anyway? There were lots of fakies. Usually that would indicate that the original toys they imitate were successful (i.e., common because they sold well).
