Baby Crumpet Restoration! (pic heavy)
« on: May 01, 2012, 04:47:38 PM »
Alright, I've been gone for a while due to some medical issues... but I thought I'd post a recent endeavor of mine!

I've been trying to save up money for a cross-country among other things, so I haven't gone to ebay to check out the ponies in a while. My friend was looking for some baits and found some pretty G1's that she decided she would buy for her collection, and of course then showed them to me. They were great prices, so out of curiosity I clicked on the seller's other items and found myself face to face to a Whizzer upgrade, a gorgeous looking Forget Me Not, and... BABY CRUMPET! All three of those were also under $12, so it was incredible.

So Crumpet needed some TLC, and I'm fine with that because I enjoy restoration. Her eyes and symbols and blush are perfect, her hair is uncut, she has no chews or dents. However, she had awful mold and rust. The mold inside was easily removed with some q-tips and a toothbrush, but her pindot mold is all over on her head, and I sat there just scratching at it with soap for at least 30 minutes before my nail beds got sore.

Anyway, I have some before and during pictures! I'll keep updating as I go along. Tips about other ways to get rid of pindot would be awesomely appreciated as well :)

Aw, she's looking better! I actually came across a Baby Crumpet in similar condition not too long ago. I wonder if she's more prone to pindot than some ponies...

Anyway, I scraped all of it off with my nails and soap and hot water. I seem to recall that people have had success with peroxide soakings? I even remember someone here had a Blossom who had horrid pindot, and she smeared a cream all over her which worked miracles....I feel like it was some kind of hair bleaching cream or something...but don't take my word on that, heh. (Does anyone know what I'm talking about?)

I know that doesn't help much but maybe it's a starting point if scraping doesn't work for you..? Good luck getting the rest off! =D

You did a great job on her. I really love baby crumpet. :) I know how tough hard pin dot mold can be to get rid of.

She is looking fantastic!!! Keep going with what you are doing for the pindot. I find if the plastic is pretty warm it is a bit easier.

Wow she looks much better!

If you dunk her in just-boiled water to soften her plastic that should make the pindot easier to work with. Using some Oxyclean may work too - I wouldn't submerge her in it as it might affect the colour on her symbols (someone else may be able to correct me on that :) ) but if you used a toothbrush with Oxyclean on it that may work, or Cif bathroom spray?

Thank you guys! I'm really excited about how much just one wash did. Really all that's left is the pesky pindot, and then conditioning her hair.

As for the using hot water thing: I was using steaming water the whole time I was cleaning. Honesty my nails just get sore XD This will probably an ongoing project though, working a bit on getting that pindot out every day.

Wow, great restore! In her original condition she looked like she had stubble and needed a good shave XD What kind of whitening toothpaste (I'm assuming that's what you used) did you get rid of the tail rust with? I bought some the other day and I guess it's just not a good brand, I'm having no luck with it.

I agree with the hot water thing, it helps soften the pores trapping the pindot dirt. Stick her in boiling water before you work on her, just long enough so she gets soft and rubbery. That'll help even more than just plan hot water from the tap. And then, well, keep scrubbing and scraping :P I've found that using a finger nail brush helps some, not as much as nails but you could use it when you get tired of scraping with your nails :) The ones I've used aren't abrasive enough to scratch the plastic of the pony, but they do get at the gunk in the pores.

I used Aquafresh Advanced White, I think. It was an old tube I didn't know I had in my drawer when I bought my new toothpaste lol.

And thank you! I'll definitely look for a nail brush, I have to run to the store anyway :)
