Practicing drawing ponies, suggestions?

I did this to practice drawing ponies and to work on my own drawing style, but it still feels a bit G4. Thoughts? Is it possible to get suggestions for other ponies to draw?

That's a nice practice piece! I love the big ears and the muzzle looks adorable, too! ^^ It does have that G4 vibe but it's a great start - and there's nothing wrong with being influenced by some generation or the other. (To be honest, all my ponies end up looking G1, even if I'm trying to draw some other gen ;) ) Just keep drawing whatever feels good to you and your style will probably evolve on its own, sometimes without you even noticing it. :)

Suggestions for other ponies, hmm. How about G3 Waterfire? Or one of the G1 Mountain Boys, like Sunburst? :)

One Waterfire, right here! I tried playing around with the leg design a bit.

oo even before I scrolled down to see the leg comment I wen "oo I like those back feet" then saw where you said you were trying something new. They look very dainty and lady like, I like it.

I also like the big ears.  To make it less G4, I would say try taking some of the roundness out of the head and play with the leg to body proportions.  But changing the head shape would probably do the most for you.

The feet are a nice touch.  On the second piece as well, try to make the stomach just a bit more round like you did on the first one.  Over all, really good start.

Waterfire looks great! I agree with the others about the feet, the implied hooves are a nice touch. And I still love your ear shape. ^^

I would suggest practicing by copying coloring books. Screen shots and other art you like, or even the toys themselves, would be good too. The more familiar you get with the subject the more you can change things, develop your own style, and it will be more natural.

Is there a specific gen you would like your ponies to resemble more instead of G4? If it's a G1 or G3 pony style, I suggest maybe looking up screenshots of a pony from that gen and practicing drawing her from reference instead of by memory. Maybe by looking at artwork from a different gen you'll be able to pick out which elements you like best and incorporate it into your own work.

I rather like your style. :) I do see a lot of G4 in it, but it isn't too terribly close.

I was practicing with full color, shading, backgrounds, and getting practice drawing foals. I don't draw foals nearly enough! (Glasses were kind of tricky, though.)

place you figures in front of you and draw them from real life, that teaches a lot about how to draw the heads of many generations. ;) this is the best tip there is (besides drawing real ponies and horses) but most people are to lazy to do that because it takes time, but it really pays off. ;)

That's some sound advice from emuel. :) But you're already off to a great start! Are those little shoes I'm spying? That is so cute! I also adore his slightly confused expression.

Another foal! I should probably mention that this pony and the last one are ponifications of two characters from "Detective Conan". Specifically, the characters Conan Edogawa and Ai Haibara. Anyway, the neck in this one feels a bit short, but I'm too lazy to go back and fix it. I also tried a new angle and used a toy as reference.

All my ponies end up looking G2! I think it helps to look at the art of a certain gen when learning to draw ponies if your not a confident freehand artist. Once you get an understanding of the body shapes and proportions, you can begin to do your own thing better =)
