G1 glitter options for restoration?
« on: March 09, 2013, 09:43:51 AM »
I thought about posting this in the Corral but figured Customs might be a better bet, please move if this is incorrect ^_^

I was out shopping yesterday making the crafting circuit and I ran across some very tempting glitter packs. One I've seen mentioned before was the Martha Stewart pack as seen here http://shop.marthastewart.com/Martha-Stewart-Crafts-Glitter-Multipack-24/A/B002BTWI62.htm I found it at Hobby Lobby.

I visited Joann Fabrics next where I found this set by A La Mode http://www.joann.com/hampton-art-a-la-mode-18-pk-sprinkle-glitter-set/xprd1057054/

I didn't buy either of them, I thought I'd ask around first. They looked pretty fine to me but when I got home I looked at a pony with a glitter symbol and it looks much smaller than any glitter I've ever seen in stores but I could just be remembering the glitter size bigger than it really is. Have any of you ever used either of these glitter brands? Are they close in size and color at all to G1 glitter? If not is there a known G1 glitter match that can be bought online?

I've also been wondering if it's possible to grind glitter to make it finer. Maybe like with a mortar and pestle. I'm not sure it would do anything at all to the glitter but it can't hurt to experiment.

I don't know about grinding glitter, it is colored metal after all. Grinding course glitter to make it finer will probably scrape off the color.

I've done symbol repairs with glitter before, and I use Martha Stewart glitter. The colors are very vivid and opaque. I have some colors in course and extra-fine glitter and I love them. I think either brand you found will work great. For pony glitter restoration, I would highly recommend getting the extra-fine glitter, it is just the right size.

Martha Stewart is a little bigger than the standard G1 glitter. You want to look for Micro-fine glitter or cosmetic size glitter with a small particle size (if it says eyesafe---the particles are small enough) It's very hard to find the right size in craft stores, but I have found it via Auto paint stores and cosmetic suppliers. I do try and stock up after Halloween too.

I didn't think of cosmetic glitter, only nail glitter which seems too big. Thanks for the tip! I found a likely brand of cosmetic glitter, Glitter Bug, but it says it softens with moisture. Not sure if that'd be a good or bad thing. I guess it wouldn't have a grainy texture at least.  Here's the link I'm looking at http://www.glitterbugcosmetics.com/glitter_dust.html I'll have to check out my local Sally's to see what they have in their glitter department  :P
