G3 Divine Shine Deterioration Frequency
« on: March 22, 2014, 05:18:36 PM »
I really like transparent ponies, so I was quite sad when I heard about the G3 Divine Shine ponies leaking plasticizer and just generally turning completely icky.  Does anyone know how common this problem is and what the chance of me finding Divine Shine ponies in good condition is?

I've also heard that these are a bit more likely to have their plasticizer leaking already, but I've also had 3-4 I got second hand and sold on, and they didn't become sticky while I had them.  So I think they are out there.

I bought all four of them when they came out and two of them are already sort of sticky.  Can't tell you which ones, though, as it's been a while since I've managed my G3 shelves.

Well unfortunately it seems to be an inevitable thing - One I bought just last year in great condition has now lost almost all of her body's glitter. I'm obviously devastated, sparkles are my faves! I think it really does depend on the environment as to how long they last, although the heads don't seem to deteriorate at all in my house (WTH??) just bodies :( I've even resorted to dry, cool, dark storage, (she stayed in for 6 months, came out with very few body sparkles) and it seemed to make no difference at all.

I have all four of them and only one of them has something going on. The other three are totally fine :)

I have one MIB and she still looks perfect :) It's strange how some leak and some don't! Though I imagine all the Divine Shines will start to leak plasticizer after a while.

*sigh*  I wouldn't mind the plasticizer leakage so much it the effect wasn't so profound on them.  Sounds like it is a pretty common problem though.

I have pics!!!

I'm not sure if the hot climate were I live could affect them faster, but here are some comparassion

This is a Secret Wish I brought new and boxed in a store she looked fine when I got her back in G3 years, now she is all red instead of the soft pink, has hard plastic and nearly all the glitter has dissolved

This two are Glitterbelle, you can see the notorious breakdown on the one in the left who I got new from a store (she waqs purple and cute before) , the  Glitterbelle on the right I got from a flea shop and she's not affected ......... yet

I got this two Flower Garlands from the fleashop, again you can see the obvious deterioration on one, but the other is fine, the difference is so great they almost look like two differnt ponies

As you can see the glitter is gone even INSIDE the pony, but she doesn't have it loose inside at all, this means the glitter dissolves along when the plastizer leaks and it doesn't falls off

so interesting. I wonder if the deterioration is indeed a climate thing....

Yes maybe, here "cold" is 10c, normal  summer 30c to 35 c , but when is really hot it can go above 40c  >_<

I thought this too, and so stored some of mine in a cool, dark and dry place, still no luck keeping them mint. Seems to be irrelevant, or perhaps it's where they came from before me and it had already started, or just the unstable plasticiser used due to the transparency. Could be different batches, anything really!

I actually have extras of Secret Wish and Glitterbelle which I'm using to see if I can find out what can speed up or slow down this deterioration, if anything. I mostly want to see if it varies simply by batch or if exterior factors are the cause. I'm waiting until summer to see if heat and humidity are a factor, and I plan to document everything I do, and compare results to my own minty childhood divine shines. ^.^

Poor ponies, but better two be sacrificed for the furthering of pony collecting knowledge than to never know the solution to a possibly preventable problem :(

I was just about to ask about this.  I have a Glitterbelle who still looks good, but it pretty sticky.  She's been in a box for about 7 years or so with other ponies.  Hasn't been in direct light or any that entire time.  Makes me wonder if she'll get worse.  I was able to get her some what less sticky washing her with dish soap.

I live in a dry hot area but with my AC going, my apartment really gets above 80 nowadays.

Those pics are interesting, Sapphire-Light! It's amazing to me that the glitter just disolves  I wonder what type of plastic they used on the Divine Shines. The translucent G1s all seem to be fine, at least the ones I've come across!
