I was watching the Princess Promenade and the Runaway Rainbow back to back and noticed a couple things.

G4 was not the first generation to show ponies as celestial bodies :P
Spike says he's descended from a long line of royal dragons, was asleep for 1,000 years underneath the castle moat, and when Wysteria wanted to stop being a princess he almost fell asleep again and said he'd miss her before nodding off--implying he'd sleep so long she wouldn't live long enough for him to wake up.
He also had dreams of being a king in the Runaway Rainbow, though he said he didn't mind being called a prince in the Princess Promenade and was crowned as such.

Also, his Princess book already had a picture of Wysteria in it!
Spike also knows what a unicorn is, and his map had something REALLY interesting--a picture of different castle/kingdoms that each celebrated different things.

One for happiness, one for laughter, one for families (this one wasn't pictured), one for friendship, one for kindness, one for music, and one for rainbows. Rarity said the Rainbow castle was Unicornia.
I think it'd have been neat to see the others.

I was also taking note of the Breezies--in the Princess Promenade, Zipzee mentions spring allergies, and in The Runaway Rainbow she has fall allergies. Considering Breezies LIVE in flowers, this could be rather difficult--and it also brings up worrying implications about what happens to them in winter.

Cheerilee mentions Rarity was selected among a bunch of other young pink unicorns to be the Crystal Princess. We don't hear of any prior princesses but the rainbows seem to have gone off without a hitch every year before her. I also noticed that the ceremony, when performed, grew her horn so it'd be like the others', as a rite of passage.

Okay now I really want to watch some G3 cartoons! I don't think Netflix has any though :( Just FiM stuff. While I enjoy those.. I think G3 has more of a My Little Pony feel. If that makes sense.

Even G3 had "Changeling" clones and BG ponies that never had toys, you learn something every day!

The only problem is, Meadowbrook's symbol isn't just a big dragonfly like that, but a dragonfly flying away from a flower, much like Silly Sunshine's. I wonder how many of these images were based on prototypes for toys still in development that then never got updated for the cartoons, like how Fiesta Flair is considered a prototype for Candy Apple, or whatever happened with G4 Cheerilee and Princess Cadance's symbols. Gem Blossom threw me because her toy's symbol doesn't have the stem on the big flower the way it does in her artwork.
And G3's Applejack is red, but in all her animated cameo appearances, she was changed back to a dull orange. My only guess is this was to make her look distinct from Forsythia, who had been made into a background character first. (Though if you can't see green well enough to tell Applejack from Forsythia, you may have just as hard a time telling an orange Applejack apart from Bumblesweet, so I still don't really see the point.) Hopefully someone can find a good screenshot of G3 Applejack that shows what I mean, because you have to get a close enough look at the checkered square blanket in her symbol to be sure it's her.

I'm still peeved they didn't make all those cool unicorns and the background pegasi from "Friends Are Never Far Away". Especially the unicorns, though. I was not impressed when they instead made Garden Butt, the most generic unicorn of them all. (Can't remember her name, but she's that G3 pink-almost-purple color with a floral symbol.) I'd much rather have had lime green Cloud Unicorn or orange Ladybug unicorn.

It's true a lot of the ponies the OC mentioned did actually get made into toys (yes those ponies in the cartoon are Glitter Glide, Gem Blossom, Meadowbrook, and Moondancer), but yeah I can see why you'd be confused because as Bag of Magic Food said, some of them don't look exactly like their toy counterparts.
But that's a long standing MLP tradition. After all, the Twinkle Eye ponies in the G1 cartoons have hair colors that don't match their toy counterparts, and of course you know all the complaints about the G4 toys not matching! Things change during production, that's all.
(I never heard Fiesta Flare turned into Candy Apple though! In fact I'm pretty sure Candy Apple came out before Fiesta Flare was shown in animation.... The only thing they have in common is a yellow body and red hair.)
Would people like to see MOAR SCREENSHOTS? I used to have a screenshot thread here on the Arena and would take requests for specific shots when the G1 and G3 animations were first coming out on dvd years ago! I have over 200!

The good thing about the glut of Earth pony toys in G3 was that they could make every single background pony in Ponyville based on a real toy. With the other pony species, anyone who wasn't named aloud was just crowd filler that never had a toy, much like all the G1 ponies with no symbols that weren't Baby Ember.

Those random unicorns DO have names :) Tomato :lol: is called Apple Flitter and Cloud Face is Feeling Flitter (they all have Flutter,Flitter or Shine in their names :lol: )

I just remembered something else G3 Spike said; he said there hasn't been a new princess because he was asleep. Also, while Zipzee sniffed the flower, she didn't actually touch it like Wysteria did--it also didn't cause allergies. XD
I also noticed some background ponies were seen throughout the specials and even gained or lost wings/horns depending on who they were. That means Hasbro must've known they wouldn't have toys made of them.

Coconut Grove was the one Pegasus pony I spotted that got to keep her wings for "The Princess Promenade", as seen in this crowd that also contains a wingless Thistle Whistle.

Here's the G3 Applejack I mentioned, from "A Very Minty Christmas". As you can see, while her toy was deep red, here her coat is more of a washed-out reddish-orange. She's still got plenty of green on her, though. It's just hard to catch her eye color because she's part of this dance line that likes to always close their eyes.

While identifying characters in "A Very Minty Christmas", I caught a few other Pegasus peculiarities. First, Baby Honolu-Loo is featured multiple times during the "That's What I Love About Christmas" song montages despite not being part of the main story, making me wonder if these sequences were done first and Cloud Climber was a late addition. Furthermore, Honolu-Loo isn't a baby anymore: Standing side-by-side, she's the same size as the others!

Then in this shot where Honolu-Loo, Star Catcher, and Thistle Whistle fly up and hug in the air, Honolu-Loo's wings are still the standard little pegasus wings with the spiral joint visible, but Thistle Whistle has grown long wings to match Star Catcher's!
So now I have this whole side-story going on in my mind where Star Catcher teaches Thistle Whistle the art of wing modification...

Some other things that were fun to see were how much Minty liked hanging out with Sparkleworks (must have been before her endless fascination with Pinkie Pie began), and... is that Apple Spice receiving a Moondancer doll? Her tail color's wrong, though.

Here are screenshots of the visible castles from the map. ^^ I like how they were clearly drawn differently from each other even on the full map. it's pretty obvious the one just offscreen is Ponyville, which apparently celebrated either families or kindness.

I have been watching the G1, G3 videos on youtube ,very colorful ,the g3.5 vids are cool too but not as good as the G1s, on G2's I have only found french tv ads ,there were no cartoons made of them???

G2 had no cartoons, but there was a video game called My Little Pony Friendship Gardens. You create your own pony and raise her to go over the rainbow to Ponyland; it also gave the G2 ponies personalities.

Aw, those comics actually were pretty cute. The bird landing on Fizzy Pop's head was adorable! Also I lol'd at "Ahh! My muscles!" Mintys' painting weirded me out. Why was there a visible belly button on that pony? o_O

*rolls around laughing* Omgggg LadyMoondancer, thank you for the scans!! I have never seen G3 comics and I LOVE them. I like the nice thick-lined style of the Fizzy Pop comic much more than the Minty style of art, but both of the stories made me laugh. I like Minty finding her own way, and the complete randomness of Fizzy Art's story just made me stare at the screen. She refuses any distraction except chocolate cake, then she's off in a jiffy, eh? lol.

It's nice to find people loving my fave gen. ^^ The poor G3's get knocked on by everyone, the ones who don't like them for being so different than the G1's, and the G4 fans who are mortally offended by their existence. *hugs G3's!* I will love you forever, G3's.

Are these comics legit by Hasbro? I ask because the cover page to "Pinkie and the Artist has two errors: The capitalization of "and" and the mispelling of "Pinkie".

Yes, they're from the first G3 annual. I believe they misspell Pinkie's name in most of the stories.

Some of those ponies you showed pictures of were definitely made. Merriweather is a common G3, and Star Flight and Heart Bright were special released toys with large wings. Their cutie marks were a button you could press and their wings would flap. One of the yellow unicorns standing with Lily Lightly looks like Brights Brightly, who was released as well.
Mostly it's just the background pegasi and unicorns who didn't get released as toys.

Star Flight and Heart Bright were special released toys with large wings. Their cutie marks were a button you could press and their wings would flap.
Also curious is that the streamer things in their symbols ran down these ponies' legs in toy form, but the symbols were shrunken to fit entirely on their hips for "Two For the Sky".

Yes, I was especially keeping a look out for comics with both of them in it due to your request. :) I also have a Valentine themed book where they actually interact more than in this one, but I will probably wait until February to post it. It's really cute. G3 isn't my favorite generation, not adventurous enough for me, but it had some really lovely artwork in some of the books. Probably the least vectory books of any generation, overall.
The G3 books are also the first place you really see ponies with individual hairstyles.

Got A Very Minty Christmas and am watching it now, but started off with Dancing in the Clouds first.
I noticed in the Princess Promenade preview, they had a different version of "A Princess Is In Town" and didn't mention Spike at all; either he was meant to be a surprise, or a late addition to the planning. It also asked if you could guess who the princess is, and had a shot of Minty and Star Catcher together.

Oh hey, I didn't know G2 ponies lived in "Ponyland" outside of the US. I thought it was just Friendship Gardens.

I believe the My Little Pony Tales ponies are G1s. They have smaller eyes than G3s and their hairstyles are different, not to mention they didn't last long as a toy line compared to G3s.

One conclusion I drew after watching all the animated specials was that Minty, Sweetberry, and Sparkleworks had to be the three clumsiest ponies in Ponyville. This latest comic scan has only cemented my conviction that these are three ponies you do not want to count on in a crisis situation. -_-
Regarding the twin Sunny Daze pic, IIRC the one at right (which I believe is supposed to be Sparkleworks) becomes Sweetberry somewhere in that cartoon too.
Yeah, for whatever reason, the last few shots from the first "That's What I Love About Christmas" montage were rotoscoped from random shots of "A Charming Birthday" into the new art style, only in that one they miscolored Sparkleworks as Sunny Daze and Razzaroo as Sparkleworks. I'd like to see comparisons of all the recycled shots there, if anyone's up for it!

I'm just getting around to snapping some more moments from the animated movies that caught my eye. Remember when we were pointing out pegasus ponies that got de-winged for The Princess Promenade, to fill in crowds in Ponyville even after they were through promoting Butterfly Island?

Well, I'm sorry I couldn't get very good quality for this, but it looks a lot like the non-toy pony with the yellow-face-cloud symbol that I used to mistake for Cloud Climber already lost her wings by the very beginning of A Very Minty Christmas!

Those are some strange clouds they pass, shaped like a snowman and a cupcake or top...? And is that a giant boot with a gift sticking out of it in the right of the foreground? The foreground may have gotten a bit messed up with this technique I used to stitch together different screenshots to make this wider picture.

Yeah, they made a few of those bird-drawn carriages. A video of the commercial featuring Rarity's made it onto YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_HfAu11js8), where you can see they were meant to tow Breezies in their flower cars.

I love how there's a mechanism that makes each bird rise and fall as the wheels turn, to strengthen the illusion that the birdies are pulling the carriage hard and fluctuating in their amount of lift.
I noticed in the Princess Promenade preview, they had a different version of "A Princess Is In Town" and didn't mention Spike at all; either he was meant to be a surprise, or a late addition to the planning.
You're right, I don't believe there was any "Hooray!" in the movie's song. But I really doubt that Spike wouldn't have been in the story by the time they made that preview, considering how important he was to everything. I think it's more that they wanted to emphasize the mystery and not make the story sound too complicated--which is very different from Paramount's preview of A Very Minty Christmas, where they gave away almost the entire plot. (Or what I said once: Didn't make a toy of you, so UNIMPORTANT!)
It also asked if you could guess who the princess is, and had a shot of Minty and Star Catcher together.

Well, at any rate, she's the one to whom Rainbow Dash says "You look divine, my dear" during the song.
And some sharp-eyed viewers have informed me that in this shot, as many as three Pegasus Ponies can be seen, although they tend to blend in with the Breezies flying in due to the lack of perspective.

Cotton Candy dumps faux cotton candy on herself, Moondancer dangles helplessly, Twinkle Twirl and Daffidazey try to balance a candy cane-sunflower-speedboat theme (?)... And is that Kimono or SkyWishes on the far right? I was never good at distinguishing pinkish-purple from purplish-pink, but I hadn't seen either of them in animated Ponyville in a while.
But the best part has to be Pinkie Pie and Minty, who look as though they've been nowhere near working on a float for the past hour. Instead they're just sitting on the ground, staring wide-eyed and slack-jawed at each other in disbelief, occasionally twitching a tail.
About the only thing better was the face they made in A Very Minty Christmas when they looked up to see Thistle Whistle rescued:

I like how the bright sunbeams in that scene give everyone shadows or highlights, which wouldn't become standard in the animation until A Very Minty Christmas. I know Friendship Is Magic used highlights for the scene where Twilight Sparkle watches the Mare in the Moon; were there any other times?

I always wondered how literally we were supposed to take that stuff. ("You promise us predictions of meteorological phenomena, and instead you paint a ribbon in your favorite colors?")
But then that comic LadyMoondancer posted has things like Sparkleworks catching stars out of the air in a net. And Rainbow Dash "riding rainbows" was a common piece of backcard lore that went underused, but now we've seen that she can also just climb up on one and slice it to ribbons. :lol: And with the "Random plant gains a life of its own" plot, I'd say "The Magic Fir Tree" has officially reached the G1 comics' level of surreality!
It took me a while to learn that the "making charms" part of "A Charming Birthday" was part of the toy advertising, as early G3 toys came with little charms to hang on them, the way the old G1s had their ribbons. The fact that they were made giant might have been saying, "Here's a suggestion: Remake this charm in your own size, kids!" Or it could also tie into a theory I had to explain how the dessert trio in "Friends Are Never Far Away" were able to make so much ice cream so fast in such a small building: Ponyville possesses some sort of magic growth potion they can use on food for just such an occasion. Since the ice cream and the cherry were separate foods, though, they had to be injected with the potion separately, and that's why the cherry wasn't already on the top despite that the ponies were able to pile the scoops that high. And if it was more of a general-purpose shrink ray, then maybe the friends in "A Charming Birthday" were working on their charms in giant form for more precision before shrinking them down to the correct size for the final bracelet, and Razzaroo was the only one left out of the loop about this technology. I bet that's also the reason Ponyville stays so secure, because they can just turn someone giant to stomp any invaders.
Now I could offer more silly speculation like that if you want, but I'm unsure whether to link Star Catcher more to my Guardian Angel theory or my Pegasus Mindmeld theory, and I've had about enough of impugning poor Spike's motives. :P So instead, here's the funniest still frame I've seen in a movie's credits!

The animation style of G3 really changed quite significantly from the first special to the later ones, didn't it? Especially the hair. It's more "piecey" in "A Charming Birthday".

Rainbow Dash as the fashionable one (dahling) seems to have been a later add-on, as she really doesn't have that personality at all in the first annual. She's portrayed as one of the more athletic and daring ponies and they never mention fashion in connection with her.
Also, she really likes RAINBOWS.

The illustrations of the ponies in their snow outfits in the third panel made them sort of look like they were wearing masks. Weird.

Had a realization about The Runaway Rainbow. The loss of rainbows may not seem that big a deal—until you remember Sweetberry said rainbowberries grow only after the first rainbow of the season. Rarity unknowingly put Ponyville's food supply in jeopardy!
