wanting to make customs
« on: September 03, 2012, 02:16:46 AM »
I'm a complete and total newb, I have never tried to do a custom and I totally want to. I've found lots of tutorials and found lots of tips both on here and just on google period. However I'm trying to figure something out...what do I test this out on? I don't want to go hunting for old MLP toys to try and customize them to find I don't like it.

So what do you guys suggest for a beginner to try it on? I'm thinking I saw something about using Dollar General ponies on a website but I don't remember now lol.

Starting with any kind of fakie is usually a good idea but most g3 baits are pretty cheap to.  It kind of depends on what you have access too.  I have a few of fakies/mdponies I could send you if you feel like paying for shipping on them.  Otherwise hit your local thrift stores if you have them. :)

Alright I'm going shopping today with a friend, I'll probably try to hit some DG stores to see if I can find any fakies.

If I can't find any I'll PM you bout the ones you have, I'm sure I could pay shipping ^^ Thanks for the help!

I started on a g4, mostly because I could swing by Target or Toys r Us and pick up one. They are small though, lol.

Following Maniah's tumblr, I have found some good information and websites to check out for things like hair and sculpting.

My best suggestion for you from the work on my first couple ponies is to take your time. If you have to rush your work on your pony, it's probably not a good time for you to be working on her.

Agreed start with a fakie or a really common G3, that's how I started out any way. Good luck with your customs :D

Those look like fun :) I made my own resin sculptures starting out, but this last week I got off my high horse and just bought a g4 Rarity to dink around with. Besides the hairing (I'm still waiting on a DH shipment D: ) I'm pretty much done. She's little, but compared to the ones I was doing before (think BB size) it was a humongous canvas to work with! :P
