Pony Corral / A glimmer of pony hope
« on: October 23, 2013, 12:57:51 AM »
Okay, I need all of you to cross your hooves for me!!

 Here is the story:
As many of you know, I got back into pony collecting several years ago when I discovered that about 2/3 of my childhood pony collection went missing.  When I got "too old" for ponies, my family packed away my childhood collection (the envy of the neighborhood) away in the attic.  Then my family moved in 2003 while I was away at college out of state. When I returned several years later, I wanted to pull out my collection to share with the little girl that I babysat, but to my horror, most of the collection was missing!!

Fast forward to today. My parents have moved again. They are slowly going through boxes and boxes of stuff that they have not seen in decades.  They recently found a box of my brother's old toys ( which went missing around the same time as my pony collection) along with TONS of stuffed animals that I have not seen since childhood!!! This gives me hope that they may one day open a box and find my missing ponies!!

They still have about a dozen more boxes to open, so cross your hooves for me!!

The Dollhouse / A Doll Bed Mattress?
« on: October 22, 2013, 01:53:07 PM »
Okay, I have a random non-pony question.

I have an American Girl Doll from my childhood (Samantha) and she came with an adorable brass bed.

I have kept the Samantha doll with me all these years (she moved with me into my apartment), but her bed has remained in my parents' attic.

As my parents were moving into their new house, they went into the attic and found Samantha's bed.  It was pretty dirty, so my mother washed the bed linens and the mattress on the gentle cycle. The linens survived, but the mattress came undone!

I now have the bed frame, the pillow and the comforter to her bed, but I need a mattress for the bed.

Since many of us here are doll collectors, I wondered if anyone knew where I could find a new mattress.

 Any ideas?

Off Topic / Coming to terms with my red hair
« on: October 22, 2013, 12:35:40 PM »
Okay, so something happened today that I have to share!!

First of all, a short background: I was born with wavy, light-medium brown hair and have always been proud to be a brunette.  I dyed my hair red a few times in college (first time was a dare from my roommate), but I always used a temporary, 28 wash color (I'm too chicken to use permanent color).

However, back in 2008, I spent the summer (3 months) in a small villa in Mexico. The small village that I lived in had no "running" water, and all of the villa's water was pumped up from the bottom of a rocky hill and distributed down through the villa. The water was not filtered and contained TONS of sediments and rust.  After bathing in the water for three months, my hair turned brick red and was waxy and curly!! (not to mention how wrecked my skin was)  Everyone thought I had dyed my hair red after I returned to the US.

Since 2008, my hair has remained red and never turned back to my natural color.  The color has faded from brick red to an auburn color, but still remains red.  At first I was HORRIFIED by the color of my hair!  I wanted my natural color back, but I haven't seen it since. I had a hard time accepting the red hair, and briefly considered dying my hair brown again. However, I realized that I couldn't match my natural color and I'm still too chicken to use permanent color.  I have slowly and gradually decided to accept my red hair.

I started noticing that people would refer to me as a "ginger" or a "redhead." I have never been able to use these names to describe myself (until recently), and I felt awkward when people would use those words to describe me.  However, I can finally say that I LOVE being a redhead!!! I think that my new haircolor really suits my personality!!  I have accepted my red hair as part of my body (just like my flat feet and my crooked nose).  I have finally come to terms with being a redhead!!

Fast Forward to today:  Over the past few weeks I have been worried about my hair.  I changed shampoos a few weeks ago. I changed to a shampoo and treatment that are supposed to thicken hair. I have had EXTREMELY FINE hair since birth, and I am constantly looking for products to thicken hair without making it waxy or frizzy.  The new shampoo and treatment seem to be working (making my hair thicker), but I think it is causing my hair color to fade.  I have been looking in the mirror every day and I fear that the red is fading and the brown is coming back.

Five years ago, I would have been thrilled to have my brown hair back, but today I am sad to see my red hair fade. I want to dye my hair back to auburn, but I feel that it would be cheating (and I really like my "Mexican" red hair which cannot be found in any box at the store).  Plus, I'm still chicken!  I've been worried about losing my red hair!

BUT TODAY a nice lady made MY DAY!!  A few weeks back I met a nice lady who volunteers at the church that I work at.  Today, that lady, three of my coworkers and I were discussing Halloween costumes (the church is doing a fair and we are all wearing coordinating costumes).   One of the costume options was Strawberry Shortcake. This lady suggested that I be Strawberry Shortcake because she said I ALREADY HAVE RED HAIR!!!

This lady has only known me a few weeks and she called me a redhead!!! It felt awesome!! Even though I'm not a fan of Strawberry Shortcake (I loved the classic Strawberry Shortcake as a girl, but don't care for the modern incarnation), I was flattered by her comment!

I guess the fading red hair is all in my head. I must be getting paranoid!  If a lady who has only known me a few weeks calls me a redhead (and I have been using the new shampoo a few weeks), then I must not be as brunette as I thought!

I'm glad that I have finally accepted my "gingerness" because it looks like the hair is here to stay!!!

As many of you know, I recently moved out of my folks' house and into an apartment!

So many of you have celebrated with me during good times and offered encouragement and support during the difficult times. Your words, gifts, and love have helped bring so very much joy into my life!

I'm so proud to be a member of this wonderful community and very honored to be a mod here! This is the greatest community that I have ever been a part of and I look forward to many more wonderful years with you all!  I love you all!!

Off Topic / Wow!! Two jobs in one week!!
« on: January 27, 2013, 09:55:47 PM »
Well, as many of you know, I have been unemployed for about 10 months.  It has been awful and I'm not going to go into it all.

   >_<

However, 2013 is a new year and it has already beaten the crap out of 2012. I have been offered 2 jobs this week!!

One is a part-time job at a jewelry store that I have been working at seasonally since November.  (I had another seasonal job at Bath and Body Works, but they let me go right before Christmas- I had been there since August). I was only supposed to work at this place until January 4th, but they kept me on a few weeks longer, and  they offered me a permanent position!!  It's only part-time, but I am thrilled that they want me!! It's nice not to get rejected!

The second job offer just came in Friday (it's not official yet).  I interviewed for a position at a huge church in my hometown back in September (I don't go to the church and the position was an administrative assistant in their children's department). Needless to say, I didn't get that job (after a 2 hour interview with about 7 different people)! However, my dear friend's husband works at that church and I saw him during my interview!
Now, fast-forward a few months. The first week of January I got a call from that church.  Since that church is so freakin huge, there are several branches (called campuses) all around the state. Come to find out, the same position that I applied for at the main campus opened up at one of the remote campuses (about 20 min away from my house in the town that I grew up in)! My friend's husband remembered that I had interviewed for that position at the main campus and recommended me for the position at the remote campus. They already had my resume and test results on file from my interview in September, so they sent all my info to the remote campus and wanted to interview me there! I interviewed on January 10th and it went well.  After several weeks of reference checking, meeting people for coffee, and faxing forms back and forth, the remote campus offered me the position. The official offer will not come until I pass the criminal background check, but I believe that it will come back clean and I will have the job soon!!

I can't believe this has all happened so quickly.  Unemployment has been horrid and I still can't believe it is almost over!

I will have to work out my schedule (I hope to work a few hours at the part-time job each week alongside of the other job), but I am so excited!!  This week has blown my mind!
