Title: Who are the G1 backcard artists?
Post by: PrincessNikki on May 21, 2018, 10:00:46 AM
I am familiar with Bonnie Zacharle being the MLP creator, but I am not familiar with her beyond knowing that fact. As far as pony concept design and art goes, who did the art for the back cards? The puzzles? The UK comics?

When asked what my top favorite artists are, it would be only fair to include G1 art as my inspiration for my own art, but who drew it? Is there a database?

That's a gorgeous back card! Can't help with the artist's name I'm afraid but wow what I wouldn't give to go back in time and work for Hasbro drawing/designing ponies for a living!

Ruth Bush did some of the illustrations, but I'm not sure which.  Unfortunately none of the backcards are signed / credited, which is normal for commercial art.

It would be really wonderful to find out! A lot of G1 art is just so beautiful <3 It would be cool to be able to look up the artists and see what else they do!

I'm interested in knowing and I love the art. Nearly all of the G1 art I love and have since I was a kid. In fact the art is what caught my attention and kept it.

You've picked my favourite back card ever!  The Rainbow Curls are my ultimate favourite set, with Stripes being my all time most loved pony.  I wish the artists were credited for their amazing work, I've often wondered who was responsible for the beautiful illustrations and colouring.  Unfortunately I can't contribute any credits to the conversation, but I'm definitely following out of interest!

I was going to say she did a lot of the work in the past since she showed us some of the designs at the previous My Little Pony Fair.

I would love to know who else. Have to do some digging. It would be great to find more and invite them to the MLP Fair next year!

I think Ruth Bush is on Facebook, if someone asked her she might be able to tell us some more artists. :)

I wonder if you email Hasbro? They might be able help or at least steer you in the right direction.
Best of Luck 😉

I know Ruth did year 4 for sure because you can tell the style is the same from the TE and So soft ponies. I had dinner with her, a few other collectors, and her husband at the first Chicago fair:)

The rainbow curl art was drawn by illustrator by the name of Allison. She worked on the tail end of g1, g2, some G3 , puppy in my pocket , cabbage patch kids, and more.  She has illustrated  most if not all of the art from year 8-10 in the USA.

Ruth worked on a lot of the playsets, costume wear, twinkle eye ponies etc in g1.

But there were several illustrators who worked on g1 art.. we’ve met a handful at the Pony fairs before...

Also one pamphlet with the rainbow ponies does have an artists signature on it.. which I was told wasn’t allowed, so it must of been printed on error with it.
