Title: Um, how do you bake poly clay without destroying the pony?

I used to dabble with customizing a long time ago and am looking to get back into it. The thing that has been bugging me is how do you bake poly clay without melting the pony?

On a low temp.  :)  I put the over a bit lower than recommended and let it bake longer.  No melted ponies or scorched clay yet!

But if it's a G3 REMOVE THE MAGNET COVER.  Those WILL melt at a much lower temp than pony vinyl.

I've heard that boiling water will also cure polymer clay but I can't attest to it myself!

Boiling water cannot actually get hot enough to cure polymer clay. Lots of people recommend it but it simply can't work, even if the clay seems properly baked.


One thing that will help is getting an oven thermometer so you can be sure your oven is actually heating to the temperature it claims and doesn't spike badly. Don't put the pony or clay on glass because it can spike the temperature. Tenting (covering in tin foil or putting in one of those disposable foil baking tins) might also help but I haven't tried it with plastic stuff. Plain printer paper or tissue might work for tenting since paper can be baked just fine at polymer clay curing temps.

Iv actually just used the recommended bake instructions on the clay, iv even done this with a G1 pony, I do keep a close eye on them though. SO far haven't had any melty disasters, and i do this quite a bit.

Skeen is right about the G3 magnets! however I usually just keep them in, (because I forget xD) and once the pony is cooled off, the magnet will usually just fall right out (or stay stuck to the pan because it's a magnet rofl) I usually glue them back in because I dont like the hole they leave behind.

Back when I didn't use Apoxie I did like Skeen said: bake it on a bit lower temperature and a bit longer.
