Title: Do you curl your ponies hair?
Post by: PrincessKittyDragon on May 08, 2020, 09:56:33 AM
I was just thinking about this today because personally I love curling ponies hair, even if it can be very frustrating at times.
I usually curl their hair both if they had curls originally or if I just think they look cuter with them. For example I curled Peppermint Crunch's hair and it made me like her a ton more than I did originally!

Feel free to post pictures below of ponies who's hair you've curled if you have any! I'd love to see them :lovey:

I said both option two and three. I looooove curls :lovey: I will definitely curl a pony if they originally had them, but also if I think they would look better.

I don't curl many Ponies' hair, but in some cases they just don't do straight. Virgo likes her angelic looking loose curls, while Knightshade just needs curly hair. I may get curling more Pony hair, but not wi plastic straws (they melt out of shape in boiling water). Fortunately I have some nice curling rods to do the job instead. If i do get round to curling hair again, first on the list will be the Candy Cane Ponies, because they don't look quite right without their curls...

I’m new to restoration and for that reason I’ve messed up quite a few attempts at curls ^^; I usually attempt to curl the hair if their hair was already trimmed by someone else, it’s too frizzy/dry, or if the tinsel is a lost cause. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nope, I believe all of the ponies I own look better with relatively straight hair.

I recurled my childhood Strawberry Fair about 20 years ago. My friend as a kid accidentally washed and brushed the curls out after I let her borrow the pony overnight - she was trying to give Strawberry Fair a bath and didn't realise so I never got mad with her about it, and most of my childhood she had straight hair or braids. But I decided to recurl her...and it has held ever since.

Otherwise, mostly it's been with G3 ponies. A few of mine have permanent curls because I felt like curling them...

I don't have any good photos of those :(

I don't do it a whole lot though.

It takes a lot of effort for me for some reason, but it's always so nice when I do give them curls. Even if they're loose, I think it adds something, especially with my G3s. I should look into boiling the hair more often to get them to stay.

I learned curling from Isabella aka pandabearcustoms.
I recurl only the ponies with curls but after reading this thread I kind of want to curl more XD

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.  Sometimes I like the way it looks as the curls fall out over time.  LOL

I strongly believe curls can drastically change a pony. Just look at PL Twilight:

I only curl a handful. My Lickety Split is the only one who I've really left to have 'natural' curls...meaning when I washed her hair I just kind of scrunched it and let it fall naturally into a factory curl look. A few I tried to curl around crayons if I knew they originally had curly hair, if I wanted a less chaotic curled look. Most I'll just wrap their hair around their leg to give it a sleek wave.

Honestly I'm not a big fan of toys with curly hair; maybe it's psychological for me because my own hair does not curl, no matter how I try to force it. My sister was a child-model who had Shirley Temple curls, everyone always fawned over her hair. Not that I wanted that kind of attention, believe me, but I always felt a little chopped-liver-y because mine was so drab. It was easier to just embrace the straight hair and say that I preferred it that way...and that extended to my ponies too. She, on the other hand, would never let anyone touch her ponies or dolls with curly hair, and I never understood why she wouldn't want to be able to comb and style it. Her stuff always looked a little nicer, because she had the restraint and willpower that I lacked. But now all our remaining ponies are in my possession, and it was so satisfying to wash and style her Sugarberry's hair out straight...oh it looked so pretty! She'd probably have a fit, even 30-some years later...

Sometimes I curl hair that's too long, or if I just think they'd look cute with curly hair :)

The most aptly-named Pony for this thread: Curly Locks!!!

She looks adorable! I've been wanting to get my hands on one of the PL ponies, how's their hair quality is it any better or worse than g3.5?

I think the hair quality is really nice on them overall! G3.5 have the best hair quality though so there is no surpassing it.

Is there an option for "only if they're going on display and/or I have the time and will to do so"? :P I curl rarely, even though I like how curls look on ponies! It has to be a pony I KNOW will be sitting in a safe, curl-friendly spot for awhile! No close shelfmates! Because the only thing worse than spending half an hour curling pony hair ... is looking at that pony a week later and seeing your hard-fought curls ruined. Noooooo!

I was going going to say something along the same lines...where's the option for 'I try but they never hold'
I only curl if they had have curls originally.  They always fall out though.  I have learned a few tips recently, (like the straw won't boil into a ponies hair) that I might have to retry.

I've been meaning to recurl the ones who originally had curly hair, but so far I've only done a few rainbow curls and a candy cane pony.

It depends on the pony;Trixie and Twilight’s mane were soooo silky, but Potion Nova has really thick and nice hair. But it doesn’t compare to the G3.5 hair ;)

A friend of mine gave me her childhood Streaky and her curls were completely gone.  I used straws and bobby pins to give her perfect recreations.  I am isolating away from her at the time, so I can't post a picture.  I was quite pleased with myself.  It almost seemed like the ringlets were easier to do in her hair than ponies that came with straighter hair.  Do you think her hair would've been different than those other ponies?

I'll recurl if their hair was originally curly. I'll also curl a straight-haired pony if I think they'd look nice with curly hair (not with g1 ponies though, they've maintained their hair texture for too long for me to change it.)

That's interesting. Mine came with curly hair.
