Hi,
I thought everyone might enjoy seeing a pic of one of the G1 Viewmaster reels. I never seem to be able to get really good pics of the images when I try. This is the 2nd reel out of a set of 3 retelling the original My Little Pony special/Rescue at Midnight Castle

Oh wow . . . am I crazy, or does Moondancer have a purple streak in her hair? In the actual special her hair is all red, no streak!
Is the other pony Bow Tie? She's the only one I remember with ribbons in her mane.

To tell the truth I've got no idea who the other pony is... I always wished Whizzer had her brighter cartoon mane colors... and I know the toon wasn't always consistent with the toyline and featured ponies they didn't release like Megan's non-talking earth pony which lived on her end of the rainbow for instance... (folk here had a thread on this fact of never released pony characters years ago they happened both in generation 1 and 3 I recall, but I can't find posts easily on the archive)... I am not even sure the veiwmaster reels are exactly consistent with the special on which it is based... Ponyfan is posting those so I thought I'd just share the funny transparent damage to the rainbow that happened on mine... (store viewmaster in the dark!)

I have these! Wasn't able to look at them for years due to the lack of a viewmaster, but I got me one of those about a year ago and it was so exciting to see my old reels again! I also have the Wombles

Is the other pony Bow Tie? She's the only one I remember with ribbons in her mane.
I'm pretty sure the other pony is Bow Tie colored pink by mistake.

It amuses me that they included a picture of Scorpan about to fall in to the haystack. :lol:

Not to me. Seems like 2D cell animation albeit a bit brighter...

I checked on another slide featuring Moondancer and she does have the purple streak in her mane.
So far we've seen:
Bowtie colored pink by mistake
Twilight colored white with pink mane
Baby Ember colored in Bubbles colors. :lol:
Here's the summary from the back of the package.
Dark shadows descended over a happy day in Ponyland. A spiadon raid captured two little ponies. At Midnight Castle the spiadon leader Scopan presented the captives to evil tyrant Tirek who demanded two more ponies to pull his chariot.
In the meantime Firefly flew to earth to get the help of a little girl who loved ponies. Megan wasn't sure she was brave enough, but with the friendly Sea Ponies Megan and her new friends went to Mushroom Land. There Mr. Moochick gave them a magic charm, the Rainbow of Light.
Back in the castle Tirek was unhappy with the second spiadon raid. They'd captured ponies that were too small to pull his chariot as he spread Darkness over the world. Tirek threw Spike, the baby dragon in to prison as a hostage. Scorpan could stand no more evil- he released Spike and the captured ponies just as Megan entered the castle.
Tirek flew out of the castle with the power of Darkness. High above the towers, Scorpan tried to stop him but fell to the castle below. Megan on Fiefly soared to mighty chariot. Firefly snatched the Rainbow of Darkness but it was knocked to the castle floor where a mighty battle began between the Rainbows of Darkness and Light. The Rainbow of Light destroyed the Darkness and it's owner Tirek. Back home Megan and the ponies discover that Scorpan had been under a spell. Now he's a prince-happy in Ponyland.

Does it look 3D when you view it with those special binocular thingies?
It's stereoscopic 3-D which creates the illusion of depth in an image by stereopsis for binocular vision. Basically presenting two different images separately to each eye kind of tricks your brain into perceiving the two images as one with depth.

Sorry, difference between my left and right eye's vision so I guess I just do not precieve this.

Out of all the Viewmaster reels I have I have only noticed one set that appeared to be in 3D (It used models/figures instead of drawings) but I'm near sighted and someone else might see a more 3D image than I do.

Well between everything those reels sure are full of mysteries... this makes me remember how much fun sharing viewmaster used to be back in elementary classes, kids would take turns and ask, did you notice... old as I am today I'd nearly forgotten this for good... Thanks cool community!

I'd love to know more about how the MLP Viewmaster reels were illustrated. You would think that they would have had a color guide to follow but sometimes it seems as if the artists just guessed on the colors. :lol: I thought maybe they were more focused on Firefly and Bowtie but then there's pink Bowtie in one slide. The sea ponies pulling Megan and the ponies on the seashell raft slide is interesting too. They look more like yr 3 sea ponies than they do yr 2 sea ponies.

I love these so much. As a child I never had a Viewmaster, so whenever I got the chance to play with one I used to get so excited, lol. Finally as a full grown adult I own one purely to enjoy the MLP themed discs. Even have a few MOC.

Pink Bow Tie actually looks a lot like Lickety-Split to me. Is it confirmed those are bows and not ice cream cones?
I wouldn't be surprised if they revamped them to advertise their latest ponies, LOL.

I'm sorry my eyesight isn't good enough to say for sure... I'd tried to figure that out.
