Arts & Crafts Corral / Re: g1s into g4s

They  are absolutely beautiful, miles better than what I can do by far.

While I love the style of G1 and G4 (and G3 obviously) in their own way, I always love seeing G4 adaptations of non-G4 ponies.  I love seeing Non-G4 adaptations of G4 ponies too, but the former is actually helpful to me because I will need to learn them soon...

Do I have permission to mention dreams I've had involving the ponies as characters (like in the TV shows and the like) rather than dreams about the toys?  I've had more dreams about the characters than the toys, so can I still participate in this thread?

They might have not been doing anything. The mothers probably felt uncomfortable that men (that are most likely not parents) were in the girl section and enough complained to have it moved.
Wow... that's actually kind of depressing.

Does anyone else miss the days when an adult/teenager could just be seen in toyshop and the first thought of those who saw him would just assume he was simply remincing about being a child?

Pony Corral / Re: So are "cutie marks" for all ponies now?
« on: May 21, 2013, 03:21:33 PM »
I only really focus on the real ponies - even in the G1 cartoons, there were alot of weird animation "oddities" or even drawings of ponies from backcard or pamphlet art who were pegasus that should've been earth or unicorns that should've been pegs... so the actual "drawings" have artist interpretation... plus, on a show you have to have on both sides or your poor pony would only be showing it if they were facing one direction all the time...
That's a good way of looking at it. :accomplished:  Thanks.

Note to admins: I'll try and be on topic next post.

Well the toy line isn't both sides on G4... At least none of mine have them on both sides!
Wow really? I wonder why that is, because in the show it's confirmed to be both sides, no offense.

Maybe we can just call the delineation between symbols and cutie marks whether they're on one side or both sides?

So G1s and G2s are both sides... symbols? G3s and G4s single side... "Cutie Marks"?

Just a thought.  ^.^
Except G4 is on both sides.

It's okay, I'll just try and be more careful with what terms I use, I guess.  Sorry if I offended anyone.

As I have mentioned, I am not (yet?) a collector, but I am curious as to how many of you continued to collect ponies during the Core Seven era.

This is actually G3.5 not G3 as far as I can see, but what basically happened is that instead of continuing to create more and more ponies, Hasbro just updated the same seven ponies again and again.  Did you still collect them each time they came out or not?

As far as terminology--I'm definitely a purist who really squirms when someone refers to a G1 having "cutie marks" :)

Lol, Yea I don't particularly call them Cutiemarks from G3 and back, they are "The Symbol" I can't really say "Hey That G1's cutie Mark is a balloon" just doesn't roll off the Tongue right.
Okay... I'm kind of uneasy saying this without fully explaining this (I am planning on doing a post on this somehow, but I wanted it to be revealed better than this.)

First of all, I completly understand that a G1 purist would prefer the term symbol, so to avoid arguing I do sometimes try to refer to G1 and G2 symbols as "symbols" and G3 and G4 symbols as "cutie marks", even though I prefer the latter.  However, sometimes it is just easy to go with what I prefer, and the term cutie mark kind of means something sentimental to me, so I often lean towards that.

I realize that the term Symbol came first, but I just feel an attachment to the term Cutie Mark because it reminds me of three characters that I relate the most to; the three of them really remind me of myself when I was going through a difficult time in my life, and it kind of helped me get back into the show.  So I always identified with the term cutie marks more, but for pre-G3 (even though these characters are G4 versions) I try to say symbol, but it doesn't always work for me, or sound right even though it is.... I'm sorry if this hard to understand.  I am planning on doing a thread that explains this better...

Sorry I haven't respond to my original question in detail yet, but what people are saying makes sense.  If this sounds ignorant, I deeply appologise and will add a more detailed response later.  I just wanted to reply to this so people don't think that I'm hating on G1/G2 by implying they used the term "cutie mark" as well.

Pony Corral / So are "cutie marks" for all ponies now?

This is going to be a little hard to explain, but if you give me a couple of days I'll be able to provide more of an idea of what I mean.

I don't know if My Little Pony was the first pony related product that placed a symbol of some sort on its ponies, much less on the flank, but that seems to be what they are all doing all of a sudden, or maybe for longer.

In MLP, the cutie mark (called a "symbol" until Generation 3) has always in someway been relevent to the pony in question, be it a description of their personality or what they can do, but has always been an important factor of the MLP franchise for me (I personally love the G4 version, where it can be earned, as I liken it to finding your purpose in life...) however, there seems to be a "fad" amongst all pony merchandice to place some kind of symbol there.

I went into a toy shop revently, and not only was there a really strange looking plushie "alicorn" (MLP or not, that is what I now know flying unicorns as) that had a star-shaped symbol in the correct place, but also there were some toy ponies that all had a kind of symbol on their flanks.  None of these were from My Little Pony, nor did they say they were at any time (that said, I think one of them was the same, or of similar color scheme to that of G1 Sundance, but it wasn't her).

This also brings me back to ages ago when I visited my local newsagents and saw what I think was a comic book, and there was a children's book about ponies, and they were all colorful MLP-Esque ponies, who all had the same symbol (what the symbol was, escapes my memory, as does the name of the comic, but I'll check if it's still there one day) - it really looked like someone was trying copy MLP, but making a very lazy job of it.

Aside from that is it tradition for the symbol to go on the flank anyway, or did MLP start something?  Sorry if this is long, I have difficulty making sense with short topics sometimes.

I think the only time you see Majesty is when the ponies flee from Dream Castle when the smooze comes and covers it.
Wow, really?  I'll have to check out the movie when I can.  Thanks.

I like the idea of some ponies never making it to the show.  That way they have whatever personality and voice I want.

I agree with what Brightberry says about being able to give ponies the personalities you want. Although I do like some of the personalities already made in the show.
I can see what you mean here, and it makes sense to me; it is kind of good to imagine what they'd be like (which is what I would have done if I had toys, I'm certain).

Although it's very tempting to create fan-material for them if you're anything like me.  I'm not going to go into massive detail now, (partly because it's only just staying on topic, and partly because I'm being careful how much I reveal - even though I'm sure I can trust the people here) but I'm in the process of creating a fanseries based on My Little Pony which will feature cameos from characters from all generations; including those that were only toys, so in a sense, that is what I will be doing - they will be my own personal interpretation of those characters (though for some, the back card stories will be a guide).

Its a tough question because so many of the G1 ponies appear in the comics that I dont think I would need them expanded on within the cartoon. Although as a toy collector, the shows are very much secondary to me but I agree the idea of the pony friends being featured, especially Cutesaurus, would have been amazing!
I see.  The sad thing is, I haven't really read that many comics, just the odd few that have appeared scanned online; like the baby ponies one, and the twinkle-eyed ponies one, but I am on the lookout for them so I'll see which ponies are used.  I wonder why the Friends weren't used anyway...

Sparkle ponies for sure. Also hi MJNSEIFER!
Hi, good to see you here.

Because all but one generation has a toyline and a television series; every toyline has some ponies (as well as non-ponies) that never appeared in the matching TV series ever.  This is basically a thread for those toys, and to ask if there are any that you would have liked to have been included on TV.  Feel free to give a reason if you have one and want to give one.

I'll probably think of far more eventually, but the one pony that instantly springs to mind is Majesty, a G1 pony who appeared in not one single episode (though she is still in the comics) despite the fact that she is obviously a very important pony, and the fact that Dream Castle clearly exists in the show.

I would have also liked to have seen at least some of the toys that were designed differently to have appeared as characters; such as the Twice as Fancy Ponies, or the Sparkle Ponies.  I'm also curious to see how the Pony Friends (a group of non-pony animals like a lion and a zebra) would have been used if they had appeared.

I don't know why I didn't think of this, but I suppose anypony from the G2 toyline could be added to this list, right?

Introductions / Re: Brony for all ponies, making his introduction.

Thanks to everyone who have welcomed me so far.  I am relieved to hear, that my love of each generation has been well recieved, and am pleased to see that others are fans of them too.  Looks like, I'm going to have an awesome time here.  ^.^

No worries that you don't own any (yet!).  Feel free to hang out and admire other's collections :D
Oh, I'm looking forward to doing so.

Introductions / Brony for all ponies, making his introduction.
« on: May 12, 2013, 04:40:30 AM »
How's it going everyone? I'm basically a fan of My Little Pony who wishes to share his intrerest with other fans. I hope that you will welcome me, and in turn I hope I make a good impression.

I am a fan of all generations, and am forever in search of a place where I can talk about ponies, that doesn't spread hate on any generations, and allows people to openly talk about whatever generation they like, and show their love for it.  I really hope that this is that place.  That is what I mean when I say I'm a "Brony For All Ponies" - I love and adore all generations, and regret not being a fan as a child (even though I saw and loved some of Rescue at Midnight Castle as a kid).

Finally, I sadly do not own any toys, but I honestly regret never buying them when I was a kid; especially the First Generation toyline; I would have loved to have owned them all, with their beautiful design and back card storylines; it would have been awesome to have played with them, creating my own little adventures for them (starting with the actual back card stories, then moving on to my own imagination - which would incorporate the show as well).  I would have loved to own the Gen2 and Gen3 toys two (even though G3 was around, I think, when I stopped playing with toys).  I hope this doesn't exclude me, as a lot of people here seem to be avid collecters, not people who wished they were.

Well, looks like I've rambled on enough for this introduction - I hope I haven't been too boring.  As you can see, I tend to type a lot when the subjects something I love. Even though I tend to suck at starting conversations online; I hope everyone's okay with me being here.

Looking forward to it.
