Restoration - Need help - Fungi / Highlighter marks / Yellowing
« on: October 31, 2017, 03:10:11 AM »
 Hi there !

I didn't find a "restoration" section, so I guess this is where I need to go. Sorry if I'm wrong, feel free to move my topic if needed.

So, there is my problem, I'm a newbie in restoration. I am trying to get my ponies clean and infection free. I'm a bit paranoid and don't want to start an epidemic in my collection. (I keep them under 70% humidity to avoid fungal development)
I already read all the guide in http://www.mlppreservationproject.com but I probably missed something, haha.

First of all, I'd like to know how to repair a faded / yellowed pony. I've found wide brownish/yellow marks on my Sunbeam. She should look light blue, but she is just discolored with a yellow tint. I soaked her in a Sodium percarbonate solution for 6-8H but it didn't do anything really about the yellowing or her original color, but I guess it got her rid of any fungi.
Do you have any experience with Sodium percarbonate ? What should I use to get rid of the yellow traces and get her original color back ? I live in Europe so maybe some product brands are not sold in my country.

- Showing yellow traces and spots on Sunbeam. (The cuttie mark was missing, I painted it back)

Next up, I got Sherbet yesterday, she is adorable but has "Highlighter marks", purple spots on her back leg and a bright yellow trace on her forehead that didn't go away with water and shampoo. It is said in the website that those are fungi too. I'm about to get her soaked in the same solution for at least kill the fungi and prevent any spreading but I'm afraid it will fade her color. Well, I should'nt worry since Sunbeam didin't fade at all, but Sherbet is really colorful. The product description says it has a whitening and antibacterial effect. Do you think it works on fungi too ? Probably, but I'm never sure.

So yeah, to sum everything up about this :

- How do I get rid of yellowing on a pony's body ?
- How to I get a pony's color back ?
- How do I kill fungi ?
- How do I get rid of those various spots and traces ?
- How do I prevent any epidemic ?

I also have an other question, haha :

I had to get rid of rusty washers on Sunbeam and Applejack, their tail is rust-free and all, I am ready to tie them with a plastic zip lock, but do you have any good method to get the tail back in its place ? I had to do it once on another pony a couple of years ago, its tail popped out while I was combing it, its washer wasn't rusty and I struggled so much to get it back, I had to trim its tail at some point, my heart still hurts when I remember it.

I hope I was clear and you can help me. Have a nice day !

For restoring the tail, there's a video on YouTube on how to put the  tail in the pony.

I don't have any experience with the product you mentioned, but it sounds like it would kill the fungus. Those purple stains may also be because of a marker, though! I'm trying to sunfade a pink mark off Dancing Butterflies, but I couldn't find a better solution, so maybe someone else will know.
You already painted the cutie mark back on, so I wouldn't suggest an Oxiclean bath to see if that lifts any stains off. I'd say mayybe sunfade too, but see if anyone reports her ever getting sunburnt in the past, as some ponies don't do too well with sunfading.

This thread should probably go in the Pony Corral, as it encompasses all pony things other than customizing and artwork :)
Now, the discoloration on Sunbeam could be a lot of things, not just fungi. Since Sunbeam has a rusty washer, the rust inside her body could have discolored the outside. This is likely the case as her discoloration has a harsh line, probably where the washer was and wasn't. I would recommend sunfading her. There are multiple tutorials you can find on how, but you basically cover a pony's hair, symbols, and other paint and put her out in the sun for however long necessary.

For Sherbet, those marks are definitely not fungi! Just some marker and highlighter. I wouldn't use any whitening products at all. They can have nasty side affects after you use them, like more discoloration and the effect spreading throughout the body and to other ponies. I would try to sun fade her as well, as the market has probably strained the body.

If you want to get rid of bacteria on both of them, just use some antibacterial soap, like Dawn :) And they definitely won't cause an epidemic. You can section them off from the rest of your collection if you want to be safe though :) For tails, I usually just press them in from the outside. You may have to use force, but your pony will be fine. Hope this helped

Hi ! Thank you so much for you reply and your tips about fungi and contamination.
Actually, I was working on Sunbeam for quite a while, so I rushed a bit and finished her before you could tell me to sunfade her. haha. I'm sorry.
She looks better in photo than in real life, here's a quick before/after restoration. My apologies for the crappy lighting on the first one, the sun was set that day.

Anyway, I still need to clean Sherbet. I rubbed her spots with acetone-free nail polish remover (pretty effective to remove markings so be careful) and it didn't go away at all. I'm not sure if kids did that. I'm intrigued. But well, I'll be trying to sunfade her as soon as I get home on friday. (I have a small student flat for my studies, I only bring a couple of ponies who just need a simple bath).

Well, have a nice day everyone, thanks a lot ! =)

Wow she is already looking great! Do let us know how successful your sunfading is, it may take a few weeks rather than days so you will need to be patient!

Wow, Sunbeam looks great! Can't wait to see how Sherbert sun fades. You can still sun fade Sunbeam if you have time too :) Just remember, don't cover her with tinfoil as it can stain ponies while sunfading. And like glitterball said, be patient

Hi, thank you to both of you. This is really nice. ^^
I'll try the sunbathing this weekend then. I really hope it won't damage them. Thanks for the tinfoil tip, Safflower.
When I'm done with Sherbet, I'll post a topic in the Pony Corral so I can post all my restorations and post another topic here for my customs. I'll try to make one in a couple of weeks using a fakie. It's a commission for a friend. Hope it will end up good. It is time to get some experience. Haha. =)
