hair length: what is best for some styles?

Hey guys... this is something that has been kind of on my mind for a while... More so since now i have more control with hair length with the material I'm using.

What is approx. the most common length for pony hair for anything but curls. With this pony I wanted to do something like a bun but with extra hair that is curled hanging from the back of the bun.. I guess kind of like a sock bun with the extra hair... kind of hard for me to find the right words
