Title: ~MNN's Yarn Perfume Puff Rehair Tutorial~[Picture Heavy]
Post by: MonstarNomNom on July 14, 2014, 02:42:05 PM
Hey lovelies! Recently, I have been receiving many questions about how I do my perfume puff rehairs and have finally decided to sit down and make a tutorial for you all! The pictures I am using were taken over a year ago, so please bear with me! (Ack, my fingernails look awful!) Haha And feel free to ask any questions. I really hope you find this helpful!

~Yarn Perfume Puff Rehair Tutorial~

Step One

First thing is to find your bait! :) I chose this poor Parasol. :<

Here is what my tool looks like that I use to pull out their hair.

Baldie pony

Step Two
Pick your yarn colors!
This was the hardest, most time consuming part of learning how to do these rehairs. I cannot tell all of you how many times I bought and returned yarn because it didn't work. I tried so many brands, and finally figured out the trick! Any kind of bulky yarn works. I find my yarn in so many different places: Walmart, Michaels, JoAnns, Hobby Lobby. 100% Acrylic works the best, however you can use some as long at the percentage of acrylic to real wool is much higher. ;) However, I would stick to 100% at all times if possible.

Here you can see what the yarn looks like that I use.

I chose to give her hair a fade effect :)

Step Three
Time to start the rehairing process!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
As these pictures are so old, I have since learned that you don't have to cut your yarn this long. You can if you want, however that will just be more fluff left over when you brush it out :)

This is what my tool looks like :)

Now you will need to unravel the yarn into its individual pieces. This one particular brand has 4. Each one varies :)

I load my tool by looping the yarn over my fingers and push it into the eye with my nail. Make sure all of the yarn is in there :)

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Rehairing with yarn can be a tad tricky when you first start. You have to be careful to not split the head by putting too much yarn in! One strand per plug is what I do. When you start getting to plugs that are really close together, skip a plug in between each one. Yarn is very forgiving and you won't be able to see the skipped plug so no worries :)

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Now youjust pop the yarn strand into the plug ^.^

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

This is what they will look like when you finish  ;) Also, I will admit I do not glue my PP rehairs as the yarn gets so thick there is no need! However, if you want to glue it you can ^^

Step Four
Now for the fun part, brushing it out! ;D
This was another thing I had problems with at the beginning. I didn't know how much of the yarn was going to come out, and at first it will look really scary! But no worries :)

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

For this tutorial, I used a slick brush, however a comb works just fine as well! Be sure to comb out the strands in sections and not all at once. ^^

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Start from the bottom and work your way up to the roots :satisfied:

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

And here is what one section looks like brushed out! And how much of the yarn came out. As you can see it's a lot! Don't be scared to get in there and brush it all out! The fibers rooted into the head with the tool won't be going anywhere no matter how much you brush it  ^.^

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Brush brush brush

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

And here she is all brushed out next to all of the yarn that came out to give you an idea of how much will brush out x3 I like to go over the hair and brush it all out again once I get all of the excess off to make it look smooth :)

Step Five

Now for the tail :) Everything here is exactly the same ^^

Unravel the yarn

Yay she is all done!

And here is a pretty outside picture :3

I really hope you enjoyed this tutorial and it helps those of you who want to make your own! I have never made a tutorial before so I really hope it was okay.  ^^; Please feel free to message me if you have anymore questions! I would love to see any perfume puffed ponies you guys make from the help of this tutorial :D

Thanks so much for this tutorial. I've made a Cotton Candy but I was too scared to brush it out properly! Will get a better brush and go for it soon :)

I started my PP rehair last night… ^_^

A WHOLE chunk of yarn came out and I freaked. I promptly put her down and will take her back up again today, most likely. Lol.

I am so glad everyone liked the tutorial! I hope I wasn't too vague. ^^' I did add to it that you should use 100% acrylic yarn since I forgot :3

Artemesia Floc: She is so adorable! I just love Cotton Candys with white hair. I need one for my own army :3

Moony: That fox tail sounds heavenly! Could probably double as a nice pillow ;D

FainneRoisin: Awww you are too sweet! I am so glad you like them :)

4Lindy: Yay! I am so glad you are going to give some of them a new home ^.^

Miss Violet: No problem! I am so glad you liked it. I hope to see some PP rehairs from you in the future :D

minercia: Thanks so much! I bet that would look so super cute :3 I just love pastel rainbow. If I ever get a rainbow baby that needs new hair that might be just what I do with it ^.^

wyndeboo: I am not so sure to be honest. Haha! Any kind of slicker brush from a pet store should work :) Combs work great too!

Thrice: I would love to see if you do end up trying :3

squishy turdl: Yay! I am so happy you like it and found it to be helpful

gemini_pony: I must see when you finish! :D

Ivaness: You will get the hang of it! It gets a lot easier the more you do it ^^

SpookyTrees: I must see when you try it!

I always enjoy tutorials!  It's so interesting that Perfume Puff can be managed in so many different ways!  My own technique is a bit different, I don't even use normal MLP rehairing tools!  The hardest part for me is always trying not to overload the needle and crack plugs.  Pretty good now, can do most ponies without a cracked plug, or if I do, it's one cracked plug and it's because I totes thought I could get away with packing one more plug!  XD  Your technique definitely makes it easier to measure out plugs.  I actually pull the yarn apart before rooting it, and make it fluffy first before rooting it.  I also don't glue.  There's no need.  The yarn sort of swells up in the plug and it works just dandy like that.

Psssst, you should try a 2nd set Princess pony.  I don't know why, but their plastic is the most 'Goldilocks,' plastic ever.  I've done several Moondusts and a Taffeta and the amount of hair I can pack onto my tool and root with is ridiculous and they don't crack or split.  I only split one plug on one of the Moondust's I had, and it was more because I had already rerooted her once, and was redoing her, and I was using a thick, Japanese kinkoma embroidery thread to redo her tinsel forelock.

I'd like to add to this: You can just buy white yarn and dye it any color, even ombre! Saves money. Loved the pics and tutorial!

MiRaja: Oh my goodness your method sounds like it needs so much more patience than I can ever be capable of. Haha So many props to you! I have anyway been curious, does brushing it out before or after putting into the plug make a difference? If I do ever get a 2nd set princess that needs rehairing you can bet I will! Finding ponies with haircuts seems very rough these days. lol I have been looking around to not much avail.

CSA: Thanks so much! What an honor! :frolic:

Wardah: To be honest, I have no idea. Haha I think it came out of a variety pack of sizes I bought a long time ago. Needles with bigger eyes do work best :)

PinkiePony: Cool suggestion! So happy you liked the tutorial ^.^

It *is* getting harder to find bait ponies with chopped up hair.  I bought a Moondust the other week for the plans of rehairing, and backround was black, but I swear to you it looked like she was missing most of her hair!  So, I thought yay!  She comes in, she has a full head of hair!  AND BRIGHT PINK AND THICK.  The heck?!  Like I can chop that off!  Sheesh, no!  XD

I don't actually brush mine out, I pick it and pull it apart, and the acrylic+yarn blends pull apart really quickly.  I assembly line it by making about 20 or so plugs worth of yarn in about 2 minutes then go to town.  I think it still takes less time than a rehair with normal nylon fiber her, but I dunno.  If I could make the SE meet this year ( yeah, miracle please, long as it's not leaving me without a job XD ) we could totes geek over some perfume puff rehairing stuff!  I don't know if it makes much of a difference either way, maybe a slight difference in texture?

Oh!  If you get bored, I totes suggest trying to flat iron one of your creations.  ;3  Start low and work your way up, it makes a really cool effect.  Wouldn't want to do every PP like so, but it's fun to try.  :3

Oh no I hate when that happens! Excitement for a bad hair pony then it arrives and the hair is just fine. It's the worst! :silly: Sounds like you got a lovely Moondust out of the mishap though ;D

Oh wow I would have to observe that in order to figure it out I think xD I am so used to brushing it! I will be honest and say I can't stand rehairing with normal nylon. The hairs that get everywhere drive me absolutely nut balls. Lol I am going to be crossing my fingers and toes that you can make it by some chance of a miracle ;D (likewise that does not leave you jobless. Lol)

Oh yeah I think I remember seeing a tutorial on that a while ago. I will have to try it one of these days ;D
Also we should totally do a PP rehair trade. Just sayin'. Lol xD

Moondust has kind of a baity body despite her super nice hair!  That's the funny thing of it all!  XD  Busted medallion and lots of permanent marks!

I found a trick that makes rehairing nylon at least bearable, and that's spritzing it with water.  It won't run away as bad.  Still, the new nylon is hardly as good as the old stuff.  My bunko needles seem to tear it and snap it when I rehair with it, though I've reused good G1 hair ( tails out of bait ponies ) to rehair a couple to wingers and to do an exact match on a German Bluebell, and that stuff didn't snap!

And I will be looking for a job on Monday.  Today was horrendous, just a lot of things building up for the worse.  The place is fabulous money but the owner is seriously anal retentive to say the least, so we'll see where that goes.  It got so bad, one server walked out tonight, and he sent another one home, who is his DAUGHTER.

Oi, but a trade sounds lovely! <3

Thank you for sharing this tutorial! I tried this earlier without any tutorial and it didn't work out. I think the reason was the yarn I was using. Hopefully I can find some better yarn from where I live. I really like these yarn perfume puff rehairs!
