Title: Anyone have any selling or buying luck on Etsy?
Post by: Yarmulke on January 19, 2012, 04:25:23 PM
I honestly don't think I can stomach buying or selling on Ebay anymore, and I've been out of the pony loop for a little while. Is Etsy good at all for this stuff?

I know there are ponies listed but I don't know about how good the turnover is. I am thoroughly sick of eBay too really, I far prefer forum based trading and if nothing else then I use my LiveJournal to post things for sale!

I've been selling on Etsy!  So far, it's all been stuff that I've made.  I haven't listed any ponies on Etsy yet, so I'm afraid I'm no help about turnover there.

I'm totally through with eBay as well.  They really don't like small time sellers anymore and have done their best to drive us off.  Now, I sell here and at Etsy.  I'm currently in the process of building my own website to sell from, but that's nowhere near ready yet.

Selling here on the Arena is really the best alternative to eBay.  You're far more likely to have a successful transaction, there aren't any final value or insertion fees, and you can use all of the pony lingo/jargon and know that you'll be understood!  Besides, it's great to know that something is staying within the community and will be cared for rather than torn up.

Etsy has a LOT of overpriced ponies. I saw a Peachy being sold for $27 the other day. I have, however, gotten good deals like 3 perfect condition Flutter ponies for $7, and other great condition G1s for ~$2 a piece. It just depends on the seller. I haven't tried to sell ponies on Etsy but I have noticed that the ponies posted for sale stick around for a while, even if they are reasonably priced. I figure that's just because most people think of Etsy as handmade stuff, not a place to buy vintage things.

I've been buying lots of Monster High custom clothes on etsy, but I have bought a pony or two there as well. I find shopping there much more relaxing and enjoyable than ebay.

I haven't sold ponies personally, but as a seller of handcrafted items I've sold over 200 things so far :) So it is reliable for at least that, maybe advertising on here would help.

I've bought ponies on etsy - I like buying there a lot. If you price your items right, I imagine they'd sell.

I check etsy every now and then for ponies, but I have never really found any that are priced decent. They tend to be way overpriced which is a  bummer!

It's sad bc I saw a bunch of ended Ebay listings that were cheap, but even still I don't like the environment. I'll see if I can find anything or decide if I want to try to sell there. Of course I'll try to sell here first, but that's a good alternative. Right now I want to buy a big G3 lot to primp bc I'm bored. Is that sad? LOL.

I love Etsy!  I've bought a few ponies and replacement wings and I've been very pleased.  I really think the sellers are more approachable and personable.  I'd say go for it:)

I've bought a few ponies from Etsy. Some have some good prices. Others are a bit overpriced. But it's generally no different than ebay, but probably a little more on the reasonable side at times. :)  Plus some ponies have been up there for eons. :3

I've not sold on Etsy before, but I've bought a lot from there. Aside from ponies, I got my wedding accessories for myself and my bridesmaid from there. I also bought BJD clothes from numerous sellers.

I hope you have better luck selling there!

I bought my SS Posey on Etsy and it was easy as pie  :)  I generally buy all my ponies here though anyway

I have an etsy account, but have never used it to buy or sell, I will one day though :) I unfortunately have no clue if poneis do any good on there, but I understand your frustration with ebay. I hate ebay, but, if you need cash for something, it is the best way to get top dollar for it. When you are broke, every dollar helps lol.

Ugh....that's a good point. Luckily I don't actively spend my paychecks on ponies like back in the day, so I don't need fast cash. I think maybe putting MIPs one there w/ a reasonable price is good. I don't have time to be shipping daily like w/ Ebay. So if someone buys one pony a month from Etsy I'm happy. LOL

Every dollar helps... except when they hold your funds for a month after the sale. This is why I don't use eBay anymore- if I need the money, I can't afford to wait until they decide I'm trustworthy. :/

As for Etsy... I have a bunch of G1 ponies listed in my shop. I've sold a couple, but it's not exactly a booming marketplace. I've never got a super good deal on ponies there, but I think that's partly because it's not auction format- you're never going to find a pony listed at 99 cents that the seller hoped would go higher. Mine are priced fairly, but not super low- if I listed them at $1 each, that's all I could possibly get for them... if that makes sense.

My shop is supposed to be mainly for customs, but it's almost entirely G1 ponies right now! I sold an Applejack with a chewed ear (disclosed in the listing and photos, of course!) and a plush Starshine before Christmas. Not the worst place to sell ponies, but there's a lot more traffic here.

I check for ponies on etsy at least once a week.  I have bought a few ponies from there (I got a flawless Streaky for a good price).  A lot of times sellers on etsy are willing to work out prices too, so you can make an offer.  I have only sold customs on etsy so far but it is so much cheaper to list items, I think its .20 cents to list for 3 months (correct me if i am wrong), so its a nice way to go if you don't need to sell immediately.

I don't have an account there, but I do like to browse. Unfortunately it seems like 99% of the ponies on there are insanely overpriced! I don't know where these people are getting their prices from, but they certainly don't seem to be in the know. =P For this reason, it seems like some ponies don't get sold, but well...it's pretty obvious why.

But I do wish luck to those of you with shops there! I'm sure if you're charging what things are actually worth, you'll have better luck than other people.

I'm looking right now. Non-mint Glory listed for $30... Honeycomb for $75 (too bad- I want her!)... almost-bait Moondancer for $45... Tickle for $75... Flutterbye for $90  :whoa:

I don't know how these people are getting their prices!  :what: There are better ones, though.

I think instead of researching non pony people think vintage ponies are all worth a mint since they have seen some like that. I think you are all right. If the prices are good, they will most likely sell. Although it takes the rush of maybe getting a pony for beans away, in the end getting a pony you really want is totally worth it.

I think people overprice them thinking that because they are vintage that they're ALL worth a mint. Especially with 80's stuff being popular, not to mention FiM. They don't really go out to research the particular pony to figure out if it's common, and what it should go for the condition it's in. They're just like "Eh, I think it should sell for $70!". But then, it'll just sit in their account and won't sell, and they can't figure out why. XD

I've actually seen some Ebay sellers do the same. There's one pony I've been looking for who usually goes for about $10-15 minty. One seller has it and it's covered in ink stains, has cancer, and has a part completely broken off on it. They wanted $40 for it for ages, and now it's down to $20. But it still won't sell for that because it's honestly bait, or in real need of restoration.

It looks like a lot of ponies that are on Etsy don't sell quickly. There's a few I've been eyeballing and keep bookmarked there for when I have the extra money. :o Great for buyers though!

But as far as selling goes, if you're looking for the money quicker, I'd either sell it here or on Ebay.
