The wood on it in my eyes is too beautiful to be painted over. :) As for filling it with ponies - I could see no better use for it.

I vote to leave as is and fill with pretty ponies!! Maybe restore it if it needs some repairs or new lacquer, but I'm all for preserving history. Totally jelly of that find, such a fantastic collection cabinet!

Congratulations, it's a really lovely cabinet! The wood is definitely too nice to paint over, but filling it with colourful ponies sounds like a fabulous idea! :D

What a gorgeous cabinet, perfect for rainbow coloured ponies! I also agree with most everyone that it looks fine the way it is. I hope it gets to you safely (and please post pictures when you fill it up )!

I wouldn't fill the new one with ponies, actually :( the leaded glass is (to me) too busy to do justice to the ponies. I prefer the way you have them displayed now.

I agree with this! It is a gorgeous cabinet for sure, but I think the ponies will look a little too hidden. If you do have china or something else to display, I would use this cabinet for that instead. Whatever you decide, congrats!

thanks everyone so much for your comments ;) im so going to dress it up,  inside only that is. the only reason now for painting it would be if it to be badly attacked by borer but i asked and there isn't any......fingers crossed.
but my main concern is...now this has happened before....il have plans for it and once we get it home hubby will claim it or talk me into leaving it in the lounge and my ponies don't go out into the lounge, i only display them in my bedroom.
i once sent him out to collect a big old french buffet i wanted to put my ponies on and it never pasted the dinning/lounge area    but they won't be dust free on it anyways.

i have loads of china  :P i found trying to hunt for ponies.
i do still really like what i have and im finding it hard to let go. your right they do display better in a clear glass cabinet.
here is one of my cabinets i had squeezed in my room, now out in the living room.  -_-  im so limited with space in this house and there have been loads of adjusting to fit everything.

it was a little frustrating the thing in the middle as it blocked a lot of display stuff.

i love playing with new ideas with new displays and ways of displaying my heard, its half the size it was a year ago but im ok with that as i can get everything.....well all G1 ponies that is (minus G3's, G4's and playsets) out on display without being in boxes all the time.
and G1's being vintage will look cool being in a vintage display  ^.^

Definitely fill it with ponies!  I kind of love the idea of painting old furniture, but it's such an individual decision.  I have an awesome old dresser that belonged to my aunty, it was really ordinary-looking but I re-painted it ice blue and kept the original hardware and I love it.  But then, if the wood is really beautiful your cabinet might be better off in its original state...  Whatever you decide to do, I hope you can post some photos!  :)

I love the mid century cabinets. I am obsessed with mid century furniture.

I also LOVE painting furniture, but it would be kind of sad to paint such a lovely piece. Just be careful if you have small children as the glass has lead in it.

so finally went out in the cold rain and wind, so worth it, just fitted in the car and my friend offered to look after the kids :D so....
for those who said keep china in it
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

so i played around a bit and put some china in it before going all pony on it :P

i was so pleased, first hubby didn't mind it in the bedroom and lucky it fitted as it is really quite thin width ways for a cabinet and we didn't have the room in the living room for it either so it fitted next to my other pony cabinets so no need to take them out.
so i filled it with mlp merchandise and other odd things. i also have my collection of little boxes at the bottom that hold combs, ribbons, breezies, mlp books etc...

its not finished as iv decided to put my flutter ponies in it with their fragile wings along the top shelf. i thought i would get some photos up now as i might get really busy and take for ever getting it finished.
iv put backcards and moc ponywear up along the back to lighten it up a bit. iv never ever had them out before as im usually worried they will fade from our horrid ozone, things don't need to be in the sun to fade here even in shaded areas, where there is natural light they will fade :(
might decide to get seaponies in there somewhere may be the bottom

oh yes im always preaching to others about lead poisoning as im really getting into antiques now these days, iv been doing a lot of research.
all good with the kids, they are kind of band from my bedroom  :P with their little fiddly fingers  they have enough toys in there own rooms to play with  :P

btw im going mental on the oak, it smells amazing........actually its almost drowning out that sweet pony small  :lookround:

Your new cabinet looks so pretty!  It's wonderful that it can look great as a china cabinet or a pony merch cabinet.   :)
