Princess Luna sculpt - Finished!
« on: January 24, 2012, 12:59:55 PM »
Wow, it's been a while since I last logged in, we've got a whole new forum and it looks great!

This is a continuation of a previous post on the old board, where I'd been posting progress pics of a Princess Luna scratch-sculpt I've been working on. It's been a while since my last update, but now she has a mane and tail!

And she can stand unsupported now too. (though I still need to fix her poor legs) At this point I'm not sure whether to give her open or folded wings, though I did sculpt wings for her they're too large for her body, no matter where I position them they just obscure too much of her body and head. Open wings look dynamic, but her mane and tail are already dynamic, I don't want to cover them up. Any thoughts?

While open wings would be awesome, I can see your point, there is so much already there and really not much room left to work, unless the wings were spread out in a perpendicular fashion.  It would give more 360 degree feel, but wouldn't add much to the main display view.  Closed wings are a nice option.  I can't wait to see her finished, she is looking amazing!

Just curious, but what kind of clay are you using?

The clays are all various forms of Sculpey, the grey is Super Sculpey Firm, the peach is Super Sculpey and the mane and tail are made of Premo Sculpey mixed with glitter.

Thanks for the comments guys! I think I'm going to go with folded wings, her balance is rather delicate and open wings might make her topple. Plus that'll make it a lot easier for me to mask her mane and tail while I'm painting her body...

Folded wings is definitely the best option. You can do the mini wings that are extended and they wouldn't throw off the balance but with your Luna being more of the slender style then I would stick with the folded. I hope you don't mind  my other observation because I like what you have done and the look on her face but you might want to angle her head so she is facing forward. It is a much more natural posture for a rearing horse. Just type "rearing Luna" in Google and you will see what I mean.
I think I need to start working with Sculpey firm. I could never get those skinny legs to work with regular sculpey! It looks great so far, can't wait to see the finished Luna.

edit: Sorry, I missed your previous post on the old arena where you said you had already baked her!!!!

Yeah, I was definitely going to agree with folded wings.  You're doing so well and I can't wait to see this finished!

LOL, I don't mind at all, her neck is bent waaaaay too far back, but originally she was going to be Nightmare Moon from this image, I didn't change her to Luna until I'd done the basic sculpt so it was too late to change it. Live and learn though.

Added the folded wings, fixed her legs and undercoated her, now all she needs is some paint!

The positioning of the folded wings gave me a bit of a headache, I still think they're a bit too low, but looking at various images of her from the wiki they do seem to move about a bit. (sometimes they overlap her forelegs, sometimes they don't...) And her tail hasn't been glued in properly yet, so you can still see a bit of the brass wire that's holding it in place.

Also, since I mixed up way more epoxy than I needed to fix her legs, I used the extra to make a miniature Celestia doll:

That's a 2p coin she's sitting on, about the size of a quarter IIRC. She's going to be an accessory for another OC sculpt I'll be making, though I'm not sure how Celestia would feel about her likeness being used for stuffed toys...
