What do you do for eyes when ponies are black?
« on: February 29, 2012, 06:12:58 PM »
More or less I'm starting to finally paint the eyes on a custom I started a while back and right now I'm unsure of what to do about the eye lashes/eye liner for the eyes.

I don't want to use silver because for this custom it would look odd. This is the design in question: CLICK HERE

As you can see, HE is supposed to be black but the problem hits with the eyes... I've done it with a black pony before but yeah didn't work so well..

Suggestions?

and a second question, I'm planing on doing a pinto pony... last time I tried it didn't do so well. Would you suggest air brushing the splotches or hand painting them?

I have seen some people use a different color to airbrush (or use an airbrush effect) a base for the eyes only and then use black to paint the eye and eyelashes. I always thought that looked good.

I think most people get away with it by using some type of bright shadow as a liner. But that would be hard to do on that pony design. You also might be able to outline the lashes in a light gray.

The black fakie that I did has dark yellow/greenish lashes and liner.  I've used a navy blue as well.

You could try giving the lashes highlights. Or do them in brown or whatever hair color the pony has.

I add a bit of blue to some black and that can work ok. Changes the shade a bit.

I used a dark grey paint for the body rather than a pure black. To make her lashes stand out I first did them in a light gray then went over them in black. For your fellow I would suggest using a charcol gray base then pure black for his lashes. If your worried about a pure white being to bright you can use a pale gray to tone it down a touch

I really like Ellis1342's suggestion. The example pony that is pictured looks great.

The black pony I did I did not put liner or lashes on and I am happy with the way it looks.  that might be an option.

Sadly his base was painted black a while back XD though I suppose I could go over my black base
