Help with shaky hands
« on: February 28, 2012, 03:14:56 PM »
Any tips for what to do about shaky hands when painting small details on a pony like eyes or symbols? I have trouble drawing the eyelashes on my pony because of shaky hands, and if the pony is fully repainted it's not as easy to remove the stuff that turns out wrong

Hold your breath while you paint each line, and avoid painting when you're tired or have had too much caffeine.

use a super fine brush and don't forget to anchor your hand- its hard to describe but as you paint you place the side or tip of your pinkie on the project and move the rest of your hand while you paint but don't move the pinkie. Always make sure each layer the project is dry and your hand is clean to prevent smudges or accidents. but anchoring your hand can help with shaking and getting smoother more even lines.

Another thing to do is seal the pony before you paint eyelashes or cutie marks; that way you have a little wiggle room for clean up should you not like what you painted.

i have really shaky hands too but i find not drinking a ton of coffee before hand and eating something helps. also try to anchor your hand like Sanadaookami said if you are doing a older gen its easy to use their head to help steady your hand.

I find that my hands shake less in the early morning/mid afternoon when I am the most awake, and I also end up holding my breath lol. It's hard to explain, but when I do the really tiny details I end up with the project piece in my left hand and the paint brush in my right, and I kind of tuck my arms in and hunker over the table. Like I said, very hard to explain XD But i basically stabilize my arms as much as possible to reduce shaking.

I find that supporting the elbow is most important. Try to keep your hand and grip relaxed, the more you squeeze the paintbrush the more your hand will shake. The hand that's holding the pony should also be stabilized, by resting it on the table for example.

For me it's easier to paint delicate lines if I have sketched them in a pencil first. Eyelash placement is always difficult for me, they just never look good unless I do them in pencil first in order to find the correct place and make them curve nicely. Also all kinds of swirly designs are easier to paint over pencil lines, for some reason it's easier to concentrate that way and my hands shake less. Pencil works best on ponies with FBRs and can easily be erased if needed. With unpainted bodies you only get faint lines, but usually that's enough to guide you in painting.

Hahahaha I mean eating one. Sometimes surgeons eat them cos the potassium keeps them steady :)
