Sunfading with an Ottlite
« on: February 27, 2012, 12:26:06 PM »
I've seen stories of people using daylight lamps, such as Ottlites, to sunfade ponies.

Is it honestly worth the £30 investment? I do have ponies that I'd like to sunfade within a month and it's still a bit dreary at this time of year, but I don't know whether the Ottlite would be better than just taping them all to the window!

I *think* it worked well for the last person who tried it, it just HAS to be on maximum settings.  Was the search engine able to find the thread on the old Arena about the experiment?

I haven't been able to use the search engine on the archived forum at all. :(

Would any day light lamp do the trick? You can get unbranded ones for less than £10 is all I'm thinking.

Didnt BlackCurtains do an experiment with different types of light recently...I am sure the result was along the lines of only natural sunlight working but I dont remember which types of other light were actually used!

Hopefully BC will be along soon then! I don't mind if that's the case, I just want to know before I spend money that I probably shouldn't be spending anyway. ;)

I've never tried it, so I don't know, but I strongly suspect it's UV light that caused the "fading pink" hair to fade in BlackCurtain's experiment, and would guess it's the UV that makes sunfading in general work. I don't think "natural light" lamps have UV....but if someone actually has experience with this, I'd be curious to know.

Bringing up this old thread just to see if there is any more info. You can buy ottlite compact bulbs at Lowe's for $6 and I'm thinking of getting one just to have better lighting in my place assuming they are better than fluorescent. I use incandescent now because I have such bad eyestrain with fluorescent.

I don't know whether anybody can add to the discussion in terms of how Ottlites do for sunfading, but I decided on this:

Yes, I know it was dark lol, I taped them up ready for the next day! Then that didn't work:

so I took drastic action:

I hung them with string on Monday, and I swear that some of the marks have already faded.

Lol. I don't know how my apartment neighbors would view me if I went that far. It can take surprisingly little time to sunfade if you actually get some sun.
