Arts & Crafts Corral / I Tried G3's Promotional Art Style
« on: August 14, 2021, 05:11:37 PM »
I was once "famous" in a small cartoon fandom for accurately drawing with the show's distinct style. This was a couple years ago now, but could the observational skills I learned help me replicate other styles as well? I closely inspected several references of G3's promotional art, and tried implementing every visual detail to draw January Joy authentically.

It's not immaculate and my posing choice wasn't too adventurous, but I'm fairly satisfied otherwise! The toughest points were shading her body, and the hat's fringe for her symbol. I seriously neglected finishing this artwork for months due to a party hat. :P Regardless, attempting an unfamiliar style with January Joy was fun and will be my MLP Arena icon for a while!

This month's "collection recap" is fairly small, but includes some interesting additions. Baby Tea Lily, who needed a surprise rehairing, and a G3-era clock I've never seen before!

Spoiler
2005 Cupcake Alarm Clock
Condition: 7/10 - It's fully functional and the face is vibrant. However, it's a bit scuffed, a screw is missing, and the purple is noticeably off-color. There's an outline of somebody's princess sticker in the original shade though, which is cute!

G3 Baby Hula Lula
Condition: 9.5/10 - She's practically mint! I think there's factory glue on her back and other minor imperfections, but that's it.

G3 Baby Tea Lily
Condition: "Customized" - I ordered both a rehairing tool and "Heartthrob" hair from Shimmerlocks. The head removal wasn't pretty, I scratched her a bit, but I still successfully replaced all the frail pink hair in her mane and tail. I've never done this before, so I'm glad it went OK!

G1 Slugger
Condition: 7.5/10 - He's afflicted with moderate regrind spotting. It's a shame, but he's very clean otherwise with decent hair. I only have three Big Brothers left to collect!

I also wanted to update on my badly yellowed Princess Royal Blue. I prepped for sunfading beforehand using tinfoil, cling wrap, and painter's tape to cover symbols and hair:

This is the result after bathing in full sunlight for roughly three weeks worth. It's probably tricky to see the improvement between these photos and the ones from my previous topic, but I swear she's a lot better! Thanks to tailrustedtealeaf for the help and advice!

Pony Corral / Balding Pony Mystery? Rehair Help
« on: April 04, 2021, 11:52:58 AM »
Happy Easter! :bunny:
I got a really cute basket with miniature animals, candy, and two G3 My Little Ponies I wanted. One's in near-mint condition, but unfortunately, Baby Tea Lily has A CLUMP of hair missing! I was baffled, I checked her eBay photos again and yes, the mane was seemingly full? I have no clue what happened between her listing and my purchase, the seller's feedback was 100%.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

We messaged a complaint and were fully refunded in minutes. Now, I've got a free pony who needs a partial rehair, and I've never done it before. There's a pinned thread on where to buy nylon hair, but I'm wary. I'd like to hear from others which website is best from their experience. If you also know the matching pink, please link it! Baby Tea Lily's dark pink is similar to G1 Fizzy's, except slightly reddish.

Pony Brag Arena / MLP Acquisitions - Mar 2021
« on: April 01, 2021, 06:32:05 PM »
In March, I got a few great ponies I've wanted a fair while for my collection! There's three G1s and a G3. They're in pretty awesome condition overall, although you might be able to guess which one needed an hour of cleaning, scrubbing, and styling to restore...

*POINTS AT SUGAR SWEET WITH PERFECT CURLS*

Spoiler
G3 Bubblecup
Condition: 9/10 - She's practically perfect besides a couple tiny marks, her mane and tail are great. She also completes the 2004 Spring Basket set for my collection!

G1 Snuzzle (CF)
Condition: 8.5/10 - Her head is slightly discolored, and two plugs are missing from her mane. Besides those, there's almost nothing else to be found.

G1 Fizzy
Condition: 9/10 - She's very nice. There's nicks on the underside of two hooves, and the eyes' iridescence is a bit rubbed. But that's basically it, I'm so happy with her!

G1 Sugar Sweet
Condition: 7/10 - Her listing photos looked unassuming, but apparently, they were washed out! Those pink marks appeared near-invisible, so I got a surprise after unboxing. Fortunately, besides those she cleaned up great and there's still a sweet scent.

Pony Corral / How Do I Remove "Smooze?"
« on: March 30, 2021, 12:30:50 PM »
MLP Preservation Project has info on removing ingrained dirt or "smooze," but it's literally one paragraph. I've never tackled this before, so I'd like better instructions or advise from somebody experienced. My afflicted ponies are Moondancer, who only has dirty hooves, and Skyflier, who's grubby all over the legs.

To clarify, a magic eraser sponge did nothing for either pony. They both have delicate glitter symbols, so I don't know if they're safe to boil...? I just feel uncertain all around. I'm worried I'll accidentally damage them somehow, especially since I may need to scrape at the dirt using a sharp object. Thanks in advance for any advise!

Pony Corral / Mail Order Majesty Discolors Less?
« on: March 26, 2021, 12:33:05 PM »
Yesterday, I was reading my copy of Summer Haye's G1 Collector's Inventory book. I read to the mail order section, which documents every pony obtainable through horseshoe points and cash. This includes Majesty's mail order offer, of course. I didn't think there were differences in her two versions, but I was wrong! According to the book, if your Majesty's hairline (mane plugs) start roughly between the ears, she's from a playset. If the plugs practically touch her horn, she's from a mail order. I realized mine was the mail order version, which is cool!

Spoiler
This is the version of Majesty packaged with the Dream Castle playset,
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Image sourced from a sold online listing.

And this Majesty, my own pictured, was from a special mail order offer.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I bought my Majesty two years ago because there's no discoloration between her head and body, pretty rare to see. I started to wonder, is the mail order version manufactured differently and less prone to head-body mismatch than her playset counterpart? I searched eBay and online images, and nearly every single playset Majesty had moderate to severe discoloration, while ones that appeared to be from mail orders had little to no mismatch! I mean, even Summer Haye's example of playset Majesty from thirteen years ago seems to of had a slightly yellowed head.

What's happening here? Are my observations accurate? If you have Majesty, cast a vote or leave a comment, and maybe we'll learn whether or not the mail order version truly ages better.

Pony Corral / Can I Restore Discolored Princess Royal Blue?
« on: March 12, 2021, 10:07:20 AM »
If you saw my January acquisitions, then you'll remember Princess Royal Blue. However, I scored her condition a low 5/10 because she has awful, yellowish discoloration. I'm wondering if I can restore her blue color instead of just upgrading her someday? I have closeup pictures under the spoiler.

Spoiler
I'll start by saying I don't know what damaged her at all. If this is sun damage, wouldn't the light pink blush be noticeably faded?
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

It's still vibrant on her discolored face.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Although, the underside of her hooves and the backsides of her legs are still bright blue, which would fit the possibility they avoided sun exposure. That also shows her vinyl isn't fundamentally ruined.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

We need to remember her delicate symbols when considering "treatment" as well.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

If anybody can offer help or good tips, please reply! My parents gifted Princess Royal Blue to me from a listing I linked them. The photos weren't good enough, and although I could tell she was dirty, I didn't think there'd anything unexpected after cleaning. I wouldn't of wanted her if I knew her true colors (pun intended), but I don't want to give up on a present pony.

Pony Brag Arena / MLP Acquisition - Feb 2021
« on: March 01, 2021, 02:38:04 PM »
Yup, I only bought one My Little Pony in February because I wanted to spend more money on my Bakugan toy collection instead. Fortunately, it's an awesome pony I've been wanting for months, and there's a funny story involved.

Chief is my favorite US male pony, but unfortunately, I couldn't find or catch active listings of him on eBay in good condition... OK, there was one option. I kept stumbling onto a fairly long-standing listing of a scuffed-up, although certainly salvageable Chief for... $80. EIGHTY. DOLLARS. No accessories, AND dirty! Oh, don't worry, the seller eventually discounted him to $70. What a BRILLANT deal, right? No.

However, the listing had a "Make Offer" button to negotiate the price. I had nothing to lose, so I sent a $25 offer and politely explained how grossly overpriced Chief was. You can imagine my absolute shock when the seller responded quick and nicely, and we settled on $30! I was so sure judging by the first impression they'd be stubborn or unfair! I left positive feedback.

Spoiler
G1 Chief
Condition: 7.5/10 - His mane has a thinned plug, but it's great hair otherwise! Although they're not too distracting, there's faint blemishes and odd blue stains scattered on his body. He might be an 8.

Pony Corral / My Little Pony Toy Photography
« on: February 28, 2021, 03:32:46 PM »
I've been doing photography (specifically outdoor toy photography) as a side hobby for the past four or five years. I don't always have an online platform to share my work, but seeing my favorite toys in memorable or pretty environments makes me happy. They're also great computer or phone backgrounds! In fact, anybody here can set my photography as personal backgrounds like I do. I'd be flattered!

These are all of the decent pictures I've ever taken with My Little Ponies I own. I'm not a skilled or educated photographer by any means, I just shoot with my phone camera during nice weather. But regardless, I hope you enjoy my catalog of fifty-one pony pictures!

Arts & Crafts Corral / MLP Art Redrawn Two Years Later
« on: February 21, 2021, 10:08:06 PM »
I haven't shown my digital art on MLP Arena yet. I drew one of my favorite My Little Ponies, G1 Locket, in May 2019. It's been nearly two years, and I was feeling a bit insecure about my artistic abilities recently. So, I decided to do her again to re-instill confidence and see I'm improving!

This is the drawing I made when I was fourteen:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I probably spent a few hours on that. Now, this is the drawing I made earlier this month with similar time and effort!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I used the same IPad and Apple Pencil on IbisPaintX for both drawings. I changed Locket's flying pose to a rearing one, which looks better to me. Naturally, there's also notable differences in my style... It looks like it's becoming more simplistic. I'm a little worried some details are objectively worse, but regardless, I like my 2021 art much better. I draw My Little Ponies fairly often, so I'll definitely share more another day!

Bonus: These are pictures of my own Locket who inspired those drawings. She's in such awesome condition!

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Do You Know About Bakugan?
« on: February 08, 2021, 10:35:41 PM »
Bakugan were a Japanese toy and game card franchise successful in the US during 2007-2012. They're creatures designed to fold into a marble, so you can roll them onto a magnetic card as part of the gameplay. The designs gradually engineered to become quite complex! There's also an anime detailing more lore... I don't care for.
I've had my childhood Bakugan collection since I was four. However, when the franchise was discontinued in 2012, I lost interest. But it came back in late 2018, and they've really done the legacy justice! I've collected the toys ever since, it's so nostalgic. I'm kinda weird because fans are 90% male, though...

Bakugan come in a variety of colors, but most are organized into attribute schemes. I have the most of red Pyrus:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Aquos is my favorite attribute, so I'm trying to get more!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I have the least of Subterra.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Haos can be quite pretty with its whites and grays.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Darkus was my favorite attribute as a child, but it's still cool.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Ventus looked best in 2010's Gundalian Invaders, I wish I had more from then!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Aurelus is a new "gold" attribute introduced with Bakugan's reboot. There's also transparent ones from years ago, and the recent rare Diamonds. I only have a few because of my awful luck finding them in stores.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

These are my 145 standard balls. I do have both old and new game cards, as well as other miscellaneous merch, but they're not terribly interesting so I left them out. Is anybody young enough to remember Bakugan? If it's not wishful thinking, do you actually collect them? Please share, because I can't find anybody else!

Pony Corral / The Weirdest MLP Flaws In Your Collection?
« on: February 03, 2021, 04:08:11 PM »
My Little Ponies are toys that were played with, and many are old toys, so every seasoned collector expects condition flaws. However, there's just some issues (varying in severity) that seem bizarre, unusual, or even kinda funny. I wanted to share a few of my candidates for this topic, and hear from others about their experiences as well!

G1 Birthday Pony is in solid condition, but why are all of the magenta markings bled into her vinyl? The other symbols seem immaculate. This baffles me, although it seems others have this exact flaw from observing online listings.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

G1 Twilight is bizarre. Her mane has this rough patch in the middle, and it didn't change at all with flat-iron treatment. Is it melted beyond hope from somebody else's poor style job, maybe...? What am I looking at?
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

G1 Princess Misty has... What IS this stain? I've never seen anything like it. Why is it just one random foot? It's not even on the bottom, as if she stood on something harmful.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

G3 Tropical Delight is discolored, but it's a really odd crusty look isolated to part of her upper body. I don't think it has anything to do with the age of her plastic or exposure to sunlight... It's too different.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Please share any of your interesting or strange MLP flaws, regardless of the generation! If you're confused, adding photos might give somebody the opportunity to answer with a cause and possible solution as well.

Pony Brag Arena / MLP Acquisitions - Jan 2021
« on: February 01, 2021, 05:30:26 PM »
I've been on MLP Arena for a month now! I love sharing my newest My Little Ponies, however, I don't want to constantly post about them. It's time-consuming and repetitive.
So, I have an idea: At the end of each month, I'll do one big update and show everything I obtained together. It'll be a great way to document progress on my collection, too! I'll name each pony, and rate their condition alongside a brief description for fun.
:newpony:
January 18th was my birthday and the month before was Christmas, so my haul is unusually impressive thanks to presents and gift money. There's thirteen ponies, and one MIB item: The first of my collection, actually!

G3 Lily Lightly
Condition: 8/10 - Near immaculate hair, symbols, and dress! However, her battery compartment is a bit corroded, and the second red light doesn't work. If you read my post asking about fixing that, I've officially decided not to attempt a repair. She's too good to risk damaging.

G1 Sealight
Condition: 6/10 - She's got wear to her paint and ink stains. Her insides cleaned out fairly easily, but the rust was BAD: Her weights still show damage after vinegar treatment. I believe her purple is off-color (it's common), but the head matches her body!

G1 Princess Primrose
Condition: 6.5/10 - Her hind legs are squished together and there's a dent in her neck: was obviously crushed a long time! Also, the iridescent paint on her symbols is VERY gone. If I tame that crinkled tinsel, she'll be a 7.

G1 Princess Royal Blue
Condition: 5/10 - SHE'S SO YELLOWED? I don't know if it's sun fading or what, but it's the worst I've had! There's also a faint, yet sizable purple stain. At the very least, her hair is great and the symbols are OK. Comedically, she stands perfectly despite everything wrong, truly inspirational.

Pony Corral / Can I Fix Lily Lightly?
« on: January 26, 2021, 05:19:43 PM »
My birthday was January 18th, and of course, I asked for a few specific My Little Ponies. One of them was G3 Lily Lightly from an eBay listing. She's in pretty great condition, and cleaned up very well!

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Unfortunately, after sanding her corroded battery compartment and putting new batteries in, it turns out a light is broken. Everything else seems perfectly functional, but the second red light in her dress (farthest from her head) never glows.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Does anybody have information or experience repairing Lily Lightly? Is there a suspected cause? All I know is that the red light isn't shattered, and the wires aren't torn apart. She's not rare, so I'm willing to break appropriate seams to examine the bulb and its wires inside her dress. But I'm not sure how. I'd like tips on what to do from knowledgeable collectors before attempting anything!
