Hair teasing help
« on: January 31, 2022, 01:21:58 PM »
Hey all,
I finally picked picked up a custom I started years ago, and remembered what I put it down. I was trying to figure out how to give the pony a teased wild mane of hair and hit a wall. I tried a few times on discarded Hanks of hair, but it only looked like a tangled mess.

I may have lived through the 80's, but I never teased my hair.  Does anyone have any tips for me?

Here's what I'm trying to copy

Disclaimer: I have never tried anything like this

Maybe you could try rooting the pony with a mix of yarn and normal pony hair, then teasing the yarn kind of like a Perfume Puff pony, but not quite so dramatically?  I'm not sure what the right ratio of pony hair to yarn would be, but I think this could work.

Hmm. I've never been good with styling hair normally much less making it poofy. Working with a smaller area is going to tricky and you might need to cut the hair in layers. I found this video about how to tease a wig that might be helpful - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVCHkvizWtY

By the way, I LOVE this  I hope you're successful because I want to see this custom finished.

It might be better to use something other than nylon, glossy types of hair aren't ideal for teasing. Saran perhaps? I've never worked with saran but I know Barbie hair tends to get tangled so that type would be suitable, I'd imagine.

Acrylic yarn, like SunPony suggested, would be a good alternative, although I'm not sure how a mix of different types would behave. If it were me I'd probably go with yarn only, brushed out and straightened, then teased. I'm sure you could find some doll customising tutorials to help you with styling.

Good luck, I'm eager to see what you come up with!

Teasing yarn using a pet brush or a wire brush would work for this! You could reroot using the yarn as is, then brush, cut and instant 80s hair!

I want to thank you for all the helpful tips and video links.  I decided to experiment on the tail first since, if it didn't work out, I could just pull it out through the body and try again.

I haven't had the nerve to try it on the mane (I also haven't started putting in plugs yet)
I wanted to see how the tail experiment worked before I put in a single plug.  I figured i might have to add more holes depending on how thick the tail ended up looking after the experiment.

I used English Toffee, Gingerbread and Nutmeg from Dollyhair. for the tail, which I'll also use for the mane.

I did find a video on how to crimp pony hair and I decided that I'd try that along with the teasing video posted by BlackCurtains.

This is how the tail turned out.

I'm actually fairly happy with that, so I'll start putting in plugs soon and then try that on the mane.  I'll post the finished product here as well.  :D

I used super bulky yarn here. Yours looks great! What a fun idea for a custom!
