Removing sticky residue over painted areas?
« on: October 11, 2021, 10:04:55 AM »
Please help, I messed up! :yikes: I sunfaded some ponies and used masking tape to cover their eyes and symbols… But sadly, the tape adhesive melted in the sun and left a thick sticky residue that I can’t get off. I tried using rubbing alcohol and scraping it off, but it’s not budging. What can I use to get it off that won’t harm the painted areas?

Thanks pony friends!!  :hot:

I use non-acetone nail polish remover to help remove glue when deflocking, so maybe that would help? It will remove paint if you rub too hard, but a quick, light swipe will often leave the paint perfectly intact, so it might be worth a try if you're careful.

Try vegetable oil! Any standard cooking oil should do. Oil is great for removing sticky residue and it won't harm the plastic or the paint. You can then wash off the oil with mild dishsoap.

You might want to try Avon's Skin So Soft, but YMMV with how it would react with the paint.

I second this advice.

I wonder if GooGone would work?  I would test it first on something else.

Thanks so much guys!! The oil worked!! I’m so happy! I used olive oil and it worked great. I tried the non-acetone nail polish remover too, for pony restoration science, but it didn’t get all of the stickiness off. Probably cause it was the mother of all stickiness. That’s what I get for using off brand masking tape
