A food scale and measuring cups/spoons are so important if you are trying to watch what you eat, especially with calorie dense things like oils/butter, pasta/rice, meat/cheese & nuts. It can be very difficult to eye these things especially if you aren’t used to portion control and you could be adding hundreds more calories more than you think you are eating. For example, photos like in this article always shock me because they don’t look that different on the plate but there is such a large calorie difference.

Oh wow, this was really insightful, thanks for sharing this! I’ve never even thought about cooking without oil….I guess I may have to give it a try. I’ll be honest and say I’ve never counted the olive oil I use for cooking towards my calorie count, so that could be part of what’s holding me back from losing more weight. I also think I’m guilty of eating too much of the healthy fats. I tend to eat a lot of nuts at a time when I break those out.

Does anyone want to share pictures of the meals they’re proud of? It might help us see that there are good, filling meals to eat while watching your weight. :)

This was my lunch for the day: Full disclosure, Imuse a food subscription service. I am NOT this creative on my own haha!
It’s a veggie wrap with vegan chorizo, spinach, avocado creama, all on a spinach wrap. I probably should have skipped the root beer but eh, I had a sweet tooth all day I resisted. :P The whole thing was just under 600 calories!

Oh, that looks good! I hardly ate yesterday so I woke up really hungry today. I'm trying to decide if I should have a bowl of Cheerios or some lentil and veggie soup.

Minty Magic That looks so healthy and so delicious!

I think I'll join this group too... I'm looking to lose weight and get more active too. I've been trying to get used to Intermittent Fasting by skipping breakfast but so far it has not worked... so I'm thinking of skipping lunch too and seeing where that leads me and eating dinner before 8:00pm.
to be more active I have to just do some exercise routine in the morning after I get up and maybe in the afternoon...

there is an app that I use called Myfitnesspall app and it works great in counting calories... its free for that or you can sign up to it and there is tones of other things you can do on it like count your macro's and exercise routines.
It can sinc with your fitbit. the problem for me is motivation....

I feel like fasting wouldn't be too hard for me, but I keep seeing a bunch of conflicting methods of safely doing it

I think fasting would be bad for me, with my gastroparesis and hypoglycemia. In fact, several years ago when I was regularly going to a gym I found I was actually eating more food. It was very small portions throughout the day, including some meal replacers (Myoplex lite) and I was still losing weight. The big difference was I had a real appetite and got hungry, whereas when I wasn't working out and like now, I eat because I think I should, not necessarily because I'm hungry. I don't get hungry very often. I figure it'd because I'm not burning off the calories.

So with that in mind, I've been eating small portions of lots of things all day instead of two or three bigger meals. My back is still messed up so I can't exercise like I want. Even doing arm curls puts too much strain on my back (my posture is not good). But overall, I'm feeling better. I'm not bloated like usual and my head seems clearer. Still eating emotionally right now though.

My posture is notoriously horrible and my back injury doesn't help, haha. Glad you're feeling at least a little better. :enthralled:

Thanks for the kind words on the meal everyone! :)

My dad is a huge believer in intermittent fasting. I did it for a while, and I guess I do still do it to some degree now. I skip breakfast and only eat lunch and dinner. I’m not usually ever hungry when I wake up. I think there are different intervals you can choose too. I might fall under 12 on/12 off for my schedule.

My dad is extreme though, he only eats one a meal a day which causes a lot of frustration for us with dinner. He’s the primary cook of the family, and since he’s been starving himself all day, the portions are insane. Even when we order food, he orders WAY too much for everyone to eat. For example last night we had burritos he made. He believes that all store bought tortillas are “too small” for burritos and drives 30 minutes out of his way to get these massive, like 12” tortillas that can only be bought at a small shop that makes tortillas by hand. Whenever we complain about his portions he just brushes it off and says if we fasted too we wouldn’t have to worry about counting calories.

It doesn’t seem healthy to have only one meal a day, but idk he’s been doing it for close to 3 years now and he gets the best check ups of any of us. We think the only reason it works for him is he’s possibly the only person on earth who has the willpower to keep that kind of diet up.

Good point!
if you exercise what you take in your going to lose weight because muscle needs food or protein. that's why there are whey or protein shakes for those who exercise. oh and your metabolism rises so you can eat more and still lose the weight.
BlackCurtains what if you tried Physical Therapy for your back so you can get back to normal and not hurt all the time?
My moms Physical Therapist said to me, "If it hurts Use it!" I'm now signing up for Physical Therapy Also...

Warning! Intermittent Fasting Is NOT for Everyone and you must seek your Doctor's Advice Before Starting.
In order for Intermittent Fasting to work, You must get up at an reasonable time in the morning if your going to fast breakfast. 5am-9am basically you can not sleep through your fasting hours its cheating and it don't work. some how your body puts itself into Hibernating Mode... We don't want to be put into Hibernating Mode. I don't know whole lot about Hibernation Mode but I know it happens. there is an app for intermittent fasting tells you when your fasting and when your eating.

I have an idea for you if you'd like to here it... get the MyFitnessPal App. use the free version. it will help you count your calories by adding the food in to the slots everyday and you can even set a calorie goal & a weight loss goal.

I need to find out what is wrong first with an MRI. Then I can see a specialist and they can hook me up with more referrals to other services. I did have PT for my back a couple of years ago and it helped a lot. Sometimes the therapy consisted of an intense massage which was great!

I'm giving the My Fitness Pal app a try.  I haven't been able to sync it to my Fitbit yet but I don't really mind logging my food in to 2 apps.

My supplement that I'm supposed to use with the Slim Shots arrived today.  They were delayed due to the pharmacy being short staffed.

I had blood drawn last week and yesterday my drs office called and said that I needed to meet with the dr today.  He told me that my fasting glucose and my A1C levels show that I'm a pre-diabetic.  He's concerned but thinks I can get it down to a more normal level by losing weight and watching what I eat.   He told me I need to cut back on carbs and sugary beverages. He said Coke Zeroes are okay since they don't have sugar.

I'm already at/over my calorie count for today.  I went out to eat after my drs appointment.  I'm skipping lunch though so that should save some calories.

My dr also recommended intermittent fasting but due to my work schedule (I usually have to get up at 5:30 am for work) I'm not sure that it's a viable option for me.

I lost a pound this week.  :cheer:

Woohoo Ponyfan! :cheer:

I weighed myself today out of curiosity. My scale is off by 7 lbs but it was showing that I've lost 9 lbs in 3 weeks. I get weighed again at my doctor on the 27th, so I'll see if my scale is correct. IF that's true, that's good considering I haven't been watching what I eat for the past 6 days. I ate a whole 8 slice cheesecake and a quart and a half of ice cream, plus two medium pizzas in the last week. The rest of what I've eaten has been normal stuff with regular portions.

Thank you Black Curtains.  I hope I'll lose another pound this week too.

I'm stressed about my A1C being so high.   I have no one to blame but myself for it happening because I wasn't watching how many Cokes I was drinking a day and now I feel really guilty about it.

I know I can get it back down but  I have to make major changes for that to happen.

If you are wanting to cut down on soda, I have a tip. It only works if you drink from the can though because you can cheat by using ice. Anyway, allow yourself a certain number a day and only put those in the fridge. I drink two sodas a day, so there is only ever two cold and ready to drink. Before going to bed, I stick another two in for the next day.

Also, drinking more water will help too. I bought a couple of these - 32oz water bottles - and love them. Having them really makes me drink more water. I rotate having one in the fridge so I can always have cold water.

I'll try to remember to post a recipe for No-Crust Pizza when I get home.  I found it in a DASH Diet book and I really like it.  I usually make it up and then eat it during the week.  It makes 6-8 servings depending on how you divvy it out but I also think it's filling so I don't eat too much of it at a time.

Got my blood test results back from my physical.  Everything looks good! :whew: Cholesterol is good, kidneys are working and they said the A1C test "came back negative" (so no diabetes) which is good because it runs in my family.  (It all runs in my family on both sides: cancer, high cholesterol, heart issues, diabetes, obesity, addiction, mental illness...the whole shebang so the longer I stave it off the happier I am!)

ETA: I also bought a new water bottle this weekend.  It was invented by someone locally (I go to church with his uncle) but it has a thing in the lid that lets you put in flavoring and then there's a switch to turn on and off the flavor so you can go back and forth between plain water and flavor.  You can buy the flavors they make (they have some yummy ones) or you can just go to the store and buy the ones available on the shelf (like Mio or Kool-Aid or Crystal Light).  I bought the one they list as pink (in person it looks more lavender) but here's a picture of the clear bottle/lid so you can see what it does.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

They're also backwash-proof so if your kids get them, they won't leave floaties in your water!  They said you can just get the lid and it will fit on other bottles but the bottle I got is also really well insulated so ice lasts a long time.  If you're trying to drink more water this might help because you can get 0 Calorie and sugar-free flavors and the switch lets you control how much flavor you get, so you can turn it up (for lots) or down (for just a bit) depending on what you want to taste.
