Not really trivial, but I don't know where else to put this, and I feel like I have to get it off my chest somewhere. I got diagnosed with cancer today.-_- I'm sad and scared, and I'm so, so worried for my kids. I'm itching to text or tell someone, but I can't bring myself to do it...I can't retract it once I let that kind of news loose.

On a brighter (almost mocking!) note, we got our loan approved to buy the property we have been interested in. So it's not all bad news...I might get my dream home someday if I can hang in there. Trying to stay positive!  ;)

It's something you should do in your own time as you feel ready to do it. Sending you all the best wishes in the world.

My mother was diagnosed with a form of blood cancer in 1991 and she's still here in 2021. It may be a battle, but it doesn't mean it's a battle you can't win. :) In my Mum's case, she's in remission at present - hers is not permanently cureable and there's always a remission chance, but even so she's done really well.

My sister and I were kids when mum was diagnosed - I was 9 and I think Naynie had just turned 4. Mum was ill for about a year before her diagnosis, and Naynie doesn't actually remember things being any different.

You'd be surprised how kids adjust to a new reality...we kind of just did, but Mum always involved us in knowing what was going on. I remember she had to do injections, and she'd often show us so we knew what was happening. That's not to say it won't be stressful sometimes, but you can do this :) And so can they.

Feel free to drop a PM if you ever feel the need to.

I must have gotten really dehydrated today.  I can't seem to salsify my thirst no matter how much water or other things I drink :soda: :soda: ::soda:

Yesterday we had our gutters cleaned.

Which would be fine, except that the guy is wandering around with a camera on a pole and understandably I don't want that in my bedroom window.

So I was faithfully promised he wouldn't be in the back garden because there's no gutter there.

...But not only did he end up in the back garden, the camera went RIGHT by my window.

I was not amused.

I haven't been sleeping, or have much of an appetite. I'm also been feeling kind of... empty? For about a week now. It's my depression, I know. But my medication hasn't changed, I didn't miss a dose or anything. I guess my depression is just -that- bad, it's coming through my meds.

Thank you Taffeta, for the kind words, and for sharing your family's story. That must have been hard for your mum, and for all of you, too. I'm happy to hear she has been in remission and doing okay 30 years later. I guess families really do adjust when something like this happens...but I sure hope the adjustment is just around me having an illness and not 'not being here'. I'm probably letting my fear get ahead of myself, and things will be fine, but I think it's natural to let the worst case scenario knock around in your head a bit! I'm scheduled for surgery next week, and they will be able to give me a better picture of how bad this is, so I'm trying to be hopeful that a week from now I'll have good news to report.

Thank you Beth...that's a great way to look at it! At the very least, it's something else to focus on and helps to look to the future instead of dwelling on my fears.

Okay, so enough of my monopolizing the thread with not-so-trivial stuff, so back on topic to the piddly stuff...I must have chomped on the side of my tongue in my sleep last night, because it is a swollen welt in the whole back side of my mouth! I can't take ibuprofen either, because I'm scheduled for surgery in a few days. Oh well...it feels good to complain about something dumb!

I hope all goes well for your surgery!

---

My dad bought me an iPhone. It's the budget model but it's pretty neat. My complaint is today some of my passwords aren't working. I got my email and Facebook back. My Arena password is still working. I'm trying different sites - some work others don't. Now I'm all paranoid. I'm thinking I did something on my phone? Maybe? Or someone hacked it? Or ????

I'm on my PC now. This is weird... I don't recall changing any passwords, but I had to sign into everything on the phone. Anyway, I'm freaking out.

I hope your surgery goes well LadyAmalthea.

I must be allergic to the hand sanitizer at work.  I didn't even use it that often but about an hour ago I noticed what I thought was possibly a place from a cut that was healing over but after that I started finding more and realized that

Spoiler
my skin was peeling off in multiple sections

and I had a burning sensation in my hand.

The hand sanitizer is the only thing that I used that was different so it has to be that.

LadyAmalthea, lots of hugs and hope all goes well!  :bigups:

Just a small complaint from me... There was no storm as big as I expected. :pout:
Luckily there was enough rain all day and the air is now cool and fresh!

I kind of hate checking my email--especially the one I use for junk stuff.  So today I went through and unsubscribed to a bunch of stuff (and reported a bunch of fraud amazon and paypal emails).  It only took about 2 hours since I haven't checked it in a while.  Maybe the next time I check it it won't be so bad...

Another day, another journal paper rejected. This may be a long rant so it's going in spoilers :) Read at your own risk.
Spoiler
This in itself is a pretty normal part of being a struggling academic in a pandemic, but it's not so much that which has got me really frustrated.

One of the reviewers clearly doesn't know my specialist topic very well.

The article is a combination of my specialism and another, and I'm fully prepared to be brutalised and educated on the second as it isn't an area I know as well as mine. But this review is a...problem, and I really hate when I get reviews like that.

The reviewer managed to confuse one historical figure for another, and then lectured me on my use of one thinking it was the other.

They dismissed the relevance of the text my article was focused on, and instead decided to cite another related text - I still don't really know why, but the best I could glean was that they felt like one text was as good as another? In any case they told me it wasn't productive to look at the variants as their detail didn't matter...?

Then they lectured me on a particular facet of the texts I study which I didn't include. Because the facet doesn't apply to the text I was using as my source material.

And then they closed off by telling me that I should do more reading on my specialist subject.

...This is a summary of course. But seriously? You muddle up the characters, choose to cite a different text, ignore the actual text, try to impose an irrelevant interpretation on that text and then tell me *I* need to do more reading?

Seriously, I don't expect every Academic to know every detail of subject, but if you're going to be a patronising jerk in your commentary, at least make sure your patronising lecture is correct.

I can't stand reviews on Amazon or eBay that are crap. I'm not talking about if a person leaves a bad review for a seller or a product, I look for those. I mean reviews that don't tell you anything. Such as, I'm starting to dabble in resin, so I look for reviews on the best brand. I hate when someone leaves a one star rating, then adds that they hadn't used it yet. Or, we recently ordered a hoodie online for my son. I was looking at the reviews for durability and how true to size they were. There were so many reviews that just said "I don't know, haven't tried it on yet". I wish if people didn't know an answer, don't waste the time.
It's something that I can usually ignore. My mom and I share an account on Amazon, and I was going through some of the reviews she had left for some of the things I had bought (I don't usually leave reviews, which drives her crazy) and she left some like this. I had to edit at least 10 things.
