I had to look up Battle Royale as I haven’t heard of that series before. I think that would also fit in high school age characters but not focused on school.

I keep returning to Yona of the Dawn to re-read certain sections and it seems I always find something that I missed the first time.

I still need to get rid of some Don't Be Cruel volumes, series REALLY didn't resonate with me at all

I looked through the manga section of the bookstore yesterday but nothing really interested me except Komi Can't Communicate.

I'm still enjoying Yona of the Dawn but I'm caught up until the next volume is released.

I was out of town for the day and found it at Barnes and Noble.

I had to look through the manga in the local bookstore today (my cousin's daughter is all into Japanese stuff at the moment and parents wanted my advice on something she might like, she's eleven, so not the easiest question to answer xD) and I was amazed how much of a range there is now compared to when I first got into anime and stuff 12 years ago. I remember it being pretty hard to buy manga in a book store in the UK then.

It's a different world now O.o.

12 years ago? Tokyopop was in Borders and Waterstones, it wasn't too hard until they folded. And if you have a comic shop or access to Amazon, you were sorted. Got so many titles off Amazon, I looked up my ancient 2005 orders and was hit by wave and wave of nostalgia

Taffeta: totally there is more selection and more genres for newer fans! We had like 20 options. 25 if you count space mecha titles ;p

Tokyopop only died about 12 years ago: if your bookstores used them, you had a ton of options. Then VIZ is a big publisher though. A bunch did go out of business at the same time.

I wonder if the manga selection varied from area to area? I had difficulty finding manga 12 years ago, too - all I could find was one small section in Waterstone's and it was mostly just stuff like Naruto and Bleach, not much girly stuff or anything like that. But that was in a small town, so maybe bigger towns/cities/whatever had more of a selection??

It was a huge selection in all our bookstores and comic stores. I would say it dwindled after 2012 because of the publishers going out of business. Most of my collection was bought from 2008-2012

In actual personal updates: found and bought nearly complete sets of Path of the Assassin as well as Lone Wolf and Cub. $35 for them both. They are missing 2 volumes apiece

The Tokyopop thing still bums me out a lot because they were publishing a translation of Koge-Donbo*'s Pavane For a Dead Girl and didn't make it past the first volume before they died. No one else has tried translating it since, no fan translations, nothing.

I really want to know what happens in Pavane For a Dead Girl beyond volume one, but oh well.¯\_(ツ)_/¯
