No known reason. Unfortunately its just one of those MLP mysteries. I have read and heard lots of speculation over the years but its no doubt probably just down to budget and Hasbro deciding that a regular series was better for the line than ongoing specials. By the time the series hit the air the rainbow ponies were off shelves and therefore there was little point in advertising a product which was no longer available.
