Make Mine Macau!!
« on: January 10, 2014, 05:54:20 PM »
I've recently decided that Macau ponies will be my next full acquisition set since I just scored Jenny (HUGE grail). I can't find much about these girls and was wondering if anyone here might be able tp shed a little light on the subject? Did they only make CP ponies? How long did they make them for, and just how many varients are there? I'm looking at getting MOAR, so photos would be especially welcome!
PS does anyone have a good link to a specialty site on them? I can't be the only one so enamoured of them :)

Yes there are only CP, for the rest I think you can find information on My Little Wiki on the Macau page http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/Macau (which makes me realize that I have uploaded my pink body cotton candy only on the CC page and not on this one)

For the pictures here are mine:

I have neither the yellow lemondrop nor the "palomino CC". As for the pink symbol LD, since I have also a grey  one with bleeding pinkish symbol, I'm not sure it's really a true manufacturing variant and not just symbol bleeding.

Yup, just CP ponies... the original six plus Peachy and Lemondrop with a couple of variations within those eight. They were sold in Germany for definite, not sure about elsewhere in Europe. Jenny is the most distinctive, but Bonny ('Blosscotch') and Rosy ('Snuzzledrop') are like mashups of other ponies :)

Why did Macau only have the ability to make them for a little while? Their being sold in Germany explains why I found mine there, but it seems so odd! They truly are origional looking ponies and i LOVE how Bluebelle is called "Belly" it's just adorable!
Is there a Jenny varient with blonde hair and pink hearts? Also, how about a blonde Minty?
Oh, and what is a good price point for each of them? Are some harder to find than others?

Why did Macau only have the ability to make them for a little while? Their being sold in Germany explains why I found mine there, but it seems so odd!

Arxon - who are the company which made Macau ponies - were not just a German toy manufacturer, they were in fact the German division of a US toy company called Ideal Toy Company. In the early 80s, Ideal took a lot of US products and sold them into market places where the original toy company did not have an interest or intent to sell. MLP are just one example of the licenses they owned.

If Hasbro had no company already selling in the market, no local subsidiary of their own and no intention to have either, then they would happily sell a license for the product - Hasbro make the license money and dont have to actually spend anything in order to manufacture and sell for the market. Its how we get every single Nirvana pony after all - never mind just Macau. Clearly for the German market, Hasbro initially sold this license to Ideal/Arxon.

Eventually we see Italian ponies becoming dominant in Italy so either Arxon decided not to continue the license or Hasbro would not renew it with them and instead the German market license was picked up by DAG. Hasbro would not have permitted a deliberate cross over in the market and most licensees would have asked for an exclusivity deal. So the change in licensee after a year or two in the German market is the reason we get such a limited Macau range.

They were sold in France too since my childhood CC is the peach body one.

I don't think so but I'm not a specialist.

Here in Europe there not that uncommon so they can be found for 15-30 $ for the "normal" colored body if you're not very picky about their condition. Lilac Butterscotch, Grey Lemondrop and Jenny are more sought after, so I'd say more 30-60 $.
I think that the one I see the less is Peachy but she's not that appealing compared to Jenny so she's usually cheaper.

Not that I know but I like to think they're true factory variants. The symbol paint looks and feels different to me and the symbol is positioned differently.

I can confirm that there exists a blonde Jenny, but I don't remember her having pink hearts. I suppose they could fade though.

There are 3 pink drops known to exist.  2 of them are in France and mine came from KCat's collection when she started selling ponies and had been in the Community for a number of years.  For most of you who do now know her she was a Chemist and used that process to disprove one of the Reverse Gusty's (which was floating around the community at the time) glue.  So I think, if that pony was not legit Kcat would not have the pony in her collection.

Somebody (and I mean you, HC!) should write a history of Nirvana ponies. Like, not just a collectors guide with a list of pictures and bullet point info, but a proper texty text book which documents the progress of the licencing of ponies, the different lines and toy companies, where they were sold, etc - all in a storytelling, chronological fashion. Because it's absolutely fascinating to read!

I don't say she's not legit I was just wondering if it was not only a bleeding symbol but since I don't have one and you do, I trust you.

For the beauty parlor, my french beauty parlor (with french cards) came with macau CC.

A great french collector and a good friend of mine had that project some years ago, but Hasbro was not interested and didn't let her use their name.

I have also had the Belgium/Dutch Parlor and French parlor both in the Box and both  came with Italy Peachy so it looks like it was pretty much luck of what Peachy was laying around.
