Vinyl Scratch Custom Trade (pic heavy)
« on: August 07, 2012, 07:05:59 AM »
This thread is so I can post updates on the custom Vinyl Scratch that I'm making as part of a trade with starlightcomet  ^.^

On the last VS I made, I used an elastic band to hold the shades on her head, which left unsightly holes on either side of the shades.  So on THIS girl, I've fixed a magnet to the inside of her head, and sculpted another magnet into the shades!

You can just see the magnet I've glued behind her eye...

...and here's another magnet I used to hold the head magnet in place while the glue dried, lol.

Here's the shades with embedded magnet.

I actually sculpted these shades twice.  The first pair, after sculpting and baking, tried to fly off her head every time I put them on.  Didn't take the polarity of the magnet into account when I placed it into the shades, so I had accidentally used a piece of magnet that was repelled by the magnet in the head.  *facepalm*

Resculpted, baked, painted, and -

It works!  Muahahahah!

Still not completely happy with it.  Made the bridge too long, so there is a gap between the shades and the pony head on the eye without the magnet. (Might rescuplt a 2nd time...)

So, VS has her head, glasses, and cutie mark painted, and I've got her tali in.  Still have to seal everything, and I'm waiting for some Forget Me Not blue hair to get here from Dollyhair.  But once it does, I'm ready because -

Pin Vise!!  Also known as a rerooting tool, seen here next to my old one use only rerooting tool.  I'm excited about using this, because I broke SO MANY needles doing the first VS.  Now I can just pop the broken needle out and put in a new one!

Got that tool on Amazon for $3.50, btw.  ;)

And here's a random supply shot for fun.  :)

Yay! Wow look at those beautiful eyes

Its interesting to see the tools involved. Reminds me of my days back in college doing Art and Design. Though I was never too good at the craft side of things.

The first pair, after sculpting and baking, tried to fly off her head every time I put them on.  Didn't take the polarity of the magnet into account when I placed it into the shades, so I had accidentally used a piece of magnet that was repelled by the magnet in the head.  *facepalm*

I have such a funny image in my head!
Imagine if that really happened to Vinyl and her glasses kept running away from her every time she tried to put them on. It'd be like one of those Charlie Chaplin slapstick jokes where every time he tries to get his hat it mysteriously runs away from him and he stumbles over.

Still waiting on hair to get here from Dollyhair.  Meanwhile, I have rescuplted a better fitting pair of shades that is ready for painting, and have started rehairing with the hair that I have.  I would post pictures, but my phone and my computer are apparently not on speaking terms right now.

How did you get the magnet into the head XD? I'm assuming it was a smaller one?
My DeviantArt, why not drop by and take a look!

Oh, it was a trick XD  I'm quite proud of figuring out how to get that darn thing in there.

Do you see the second picture, where I've got a silver magnet sitting on her eye?  That's the kind I put in her head.  It's the strongest (and smallest) kind that they had at hobby lobby.   I got a little pack of 6, and they are very difficult to pull apart.  When you pull them apart, they will fly through the air to jump back together.  Fun stuff.

I was going to just dab superglue on one side and use forceps to place it in the eye, but It is slightly too large to fit easily through the neck hole.   With the forceps holding onto it, it wouldn't fit through at all!

Instead, I shoved the magnet partially in and lined it up so one side of the magnet was parallel to the eye.  It was sitting on end in the hole, so there was a tiny gap on either side where you could access the face sides of the magnet.   I used a fine pointed tube of superglue to squirt glue on the side of the magnet that was facing the eye.

Then I got creative - I held the matching silver magnet on the eye, lined up with where I wanted the one inside the head, and then I shoved the magnet the rest of the way through the neck hole, whereupon it promptly leapt right to where I wanted it to be and stuck there.

After that I squirted some more glue in there, just to be safe, and left it to dry.  The attraction between the two magnets was strong enough to hold it solidly in place while it dried.

  ^.^

This pony is amazing!  I'm really impressed with how you got the magnets into the head.  I'd have been stumped.

Thanks!  Magnets are cool

My Forget Me Not blue hair is in from Dollyhair, so I've got VS partially rehaired.  Progress is slower now that school has started, but she's coming along.  I will update with pics soon.   :work:

Update:  She is fully rehaired now and painted, waiting for the glue to dry so I can style her hair.  Her tail is already trimmed and styled.
