Title: Am I the only one?
Post by: gemini_pony on July 13, 2019, 08:15:56 AM
That thinks they over killed how many basic fun ponies they are making? I thought maybe 10 would have been good. I'd rather have new products that all reports. Like maybe more g1s as little chibi toys?

I dont know, I think everyone wants their specific favorites in a crisp new box, and as long as they are selling they are going to make more. But yes of course they could do so much more! Chibis would be to die for!

I don't think they are doing a lot if you think that there were over 600 + released in all of G1 era  I would love it if they did that many though :D but I don't think they will but I don't think the G1 would look as good in chibi style  but thats just my opinion ,

I’ve bought a few of the basic fun ponies, and I hope to get a few more, but I don’t see the point of recreating my entire vintage collection with a repro collection, you know?  I’m not personally interested in the Stranger Things AJ, but I like the idea of ‘specialty’ ponies like that more than endless waves of G1 reproductions.

I agree.  I mean I never collected ponies as a kid . I prefer finding loose stuff.

I thought the mashems looked cute so I think chibi could work.  I  think if they made new designs on a G1 base I'd be way more excited.

I'd also be super interested if they made stuff that was never released.

I like seeing the Basic Fun ponies. :) I only have 1 or 2 G1 ponies out of each set Basic Fun has released so far. I love that the Basic Fun ponies look brand new and it gives me a chance to own ponies that I didn't have or have newer versions that look pristine as my childhood ponies were well loved and although I took really good care of my toys, now some of them are pretty grubby looking.

If the Basic Fun line continues I will probably have to make a choice when to stop buying all of the ponies in a set and only get a few.

I'm not going to let my kid play with 30 year old plastic that is leaking.. so the BF ponies certainly have a reason to exist beyond just collectors collections. It would of been lame to have the original 6 + 4 others.

I think the best shot for a chibi is another company. Loyal subject came the closest but they just had weird proportions.

I'm glad they are continuing. What were they gonna do? Release the same bunch Hasbro released during G3 and that's it? That would be incredibly lame. If you don't like it, don't buy.

I for one am sick of Chibi Everything. Its ugly as heck. If you want Chibi Ponies, stick with G3.5s, G4s, Funko Pops and Loyal Subjects.

Basic Fun are making Repros. Repros are faithful reproductions of a thing.

I love chibi stuff without a doubt. And have ever since the 80s (super deformed).

But none of those things really feel true "chibi" to me based on proportions.

ETA -- now that I think about it. Cutie mark crew are fairly chibi

No, I agree with everyone else, they aren't making too many. I hope they make it to some later years so I can get ones from my childhood

As for chibi things I have nothing against them, and why couldn't there be both reproductions and chibi things? Although if I had to choose between the two, obviously the repros because there is just endless chibi stuff (toys, anime merch etc)

To be honest i think that its great the ponies are being recreated. They arent hurting anything other than peoples wallets (which is their choice haha!) So really its a case of if you dont like it dont buy it. If its bringing people joy theres no "overkilling it". In like 30 years most people will be flocking to collect them since theyre vintage im guessing. :)

^ this. I like my old gen1 as a collection, but the retro BF ponies are fun for my kids to play with, should they ever be interested in ponies. I don't feel comfortable with them handling old plastic which has plasticizers and other materials that are now forbidden in children's toys.

I just wish that, for collectors, they made more original ponies! They have the molds, why keep reproducing ponies that already exist? They could make new gen1 ponies and I'd buy literally ALL of it! I love the Stranger Things AJ SO much, please make more!

I’m on the fence about it. I do like having the option of having these new ponies and to keep them in box if I like. I bought a few for my niece and she loves playing with the ponies. I would like it if they released some of the harder To find ponies like a Mimic would be nice.

From a UK perspective, we have already had ten ponies we never had in G1, with 2 more on the way in the autumn in Pinwheel and Starflower. From the original six, Minty is also a bit obscure here. So from my point of view, there isn't much repetition. The first set rainbows, yeah, but my first pony was Windy so I can't complain about it.

I actually like the retro CP set better in most cases than the actual CP set, which is a terrible thing to say as a G1 collector but is true xD.

In any case, Basic Fun are producing the early US line. And for some reason Hasbro UK skipped out on the year 2 and 3 unicorn and pegasus ponies, the year 3 rainbows, year 3 adult sea ponies and the unicorn and pegasus babies from the first baby pony set. So if any or all of those are reissued they're brand new toys for everyone over here who didn't have the luxury of a foreign holiday in the eighties (which we didn't as a family).

At the same time, though, most all of those characters were among the most memorable early ones in the UK comic stories, and on UK merchandise. So people REMEMBER them. Now for the first time they can BUY them.

I found Medley and Glory in the UK this week in a store with a £ price tag for the first time since I told my mother aged four that I 'really really wanted them' xD. She did hunt and hunt for them without any luck. It's not an exaggeration to say I've waited more than 30 years to be able to buy a Glory and Medley from new in store.

It seems a bit crazy I guess for people stateside for whom these guys are common - but for me, I'm very grateful to Basic Fun for finally bringing the ponies to the UK that Hasbro forgot.

That's not to say I wouldn't love it if they brought out some new ponies. Unfortunately the only time they've done anything close to that has been US only, with the SDCC pony and ST AJ, which is frankly unfair, but there you go. These things go both ways.

From a collecting standpoint, it seems a bit redundant to have ponies like Firefly and the Collectors since they're already easy to find or cheap to buy online. Where I think Basic Fun really shines is ponies that age terribly, like white ponies, and the Year 3 Rainbows. I'd love to see So Softs make a return, or maybe Precious Pocket ponies. Generally I think Twinkle Eyes are fine, but regrind is common enough. Or imagine buying a Lickety Split with pink hair, and of course, Flutter ponies with wings.

But then what about in another 20 or 30 years? The "okay" G1s might be fine now, but they'll certainly get worse over time...

I understand they want to strike hot with nostalgia, and so therefore are going with the original ponies versus, say, Watercolour Baby Sea Ponies.  Not everyone knows that set existed but I think most people have seen a Firefly or an Applejack pony in their lives.

Repetitive, but banditpony makes a good point that these are safer plastic than the older ones.

I wish they had done more different lines (maybe they will?) than just the first few years.  Give us the boy ponies and some babies, and something with a gimmick, then I will be satisfied.  Waves 1-3 have been all the basic, traditional ponies and I want a bit more fantasy.

THIS doesn't make sense to me.

The UK haven't had AJ's set, which Norway and Finland etc seem to have had, but both here and the Norse countries seem to be getting imports from the US. Ours certainly are directly being imported (whereas the French ones have bilingual boxes).

What doesn't make sense is that in the eighties the Netherlands had lots of US imports with English language boxes.

But not this time?

I think they could do much better in mainland Europe if they tried. I'm really happy to have what we've had here, but I feel it's really unfair that most of continental Europe hasn't had any of these in stores. I am certain there are enough pony fans in the Netherlands, Spain and Germany alone to sell a LOT of these, never minding the kids. Even if the box was in English, couldn't they just print safety labels in the native language and stick them on?

And if our customs rules get messed up at the end of the year (looking likely ><) then importing them from the UK is just going to cost more again for those people (sigh).

Also there's no need to call stuff I like ( chibi stuff) ugly.  I actually wouldn't let any children touch anything I own though.

I guess I'm the minority.  I don't like having a bunch of reproductions. I would rather have a new style of something to collect or new spins on the old designs.

For a bit there I jumped on the "I need an army of my favorite ponies" but now I have pulled away from it. I guess buying a house and having limited space I want more variety and different things to look at. I agree with you that new spins on old designs are cool, to have g1 AJ in both poses, g3 AJ, and g4 AJ all together is much cooler to me than having 35 of the same pose AJ.

This basically sums up how I feel, too. I'm not an army person - or well, I've never been the type to collect the same thing over and over. I like variety! I love that the repros are a thing, but I won't be buying all of them. I don't need to buy the same things over again.

It'd be nice if they could come out with something new in addition to the reproductions. Then everyone wins. :) Now, if they could make some of the unreleased/prototypes... THEN we'd be talking. ;)

While I haven't been able to buy any of them really (because Target is out of my way every day) to me they are not as stale as G4. G4 was really stale in what they were doing, the same 6 characters in singles while a single background character everyone wants gets lumped into a pack with the main 6 (I'm looking at you Minty).

I'm glad Basic Fun is the one doing this though, when Hasbro tried they basically failed. We may get to see the return of certain ponies in better shape than the ones that have aged from 30 years ago. They won't be perfect but still nice to have.
Title: Re: Am I the only one?

I adore them and have bought most of them thus far. I totally agree with everyone saying that Basic Fun is kinda beating Hasbro at their own MLP Game. G4 hasn't been super exciting for me lately. And it's a great point that these are better for kids to play with than actual old G1s!

I will say that I don't know how long I could justify collecting these repros if they keep making more and more, being that I do have so many of the originals haha. I would absolutely continue buying my favorite ponies though (of which there are many lol).

Also agree that it would be cool if they started changing things up a little, making variants or prototypes that never came to be in G1. OMG, how about G2 or G3 ponies in G1 molds? At that point I would just have my paychecks sent directly to BF.

I honestly feel the same about retro toys being overdone.

Maybe it's because before G4 I thought G1 ponies were ugly? And I paid zero attention to MLP as a child.  Never watched a single episode sold the two ponies I had at a yardsale and only liked baby sea ponies.

I mean I honestly love all gens now though.

I'm the opposite, I'm so happy to see this. In fact, I wish they would do more and go on and do later lines. I've actually only recently taken an interest in G1 specifically (I've been G3 for years), and feel very new to G1, so just being able to pick up new reproductions is simple and nice and I also feel like I'm not taking originals from more serious collectors, if that makes any sense?

I think that's one of the good things about the retros. It levels up the playing field.

I said before, but I've never found Medley or Firefly in the UK, ever, so having them in a store here is awesome. Same with Tickle and Pinwheel. I feel like if it was the reverse and BF were bringing out retro Gypsy and Honeycomb and UK people were saying, "ah, but we had them already, so let's not", there'd be some annoyed people stateside, so it's also relative geographically.

But I also think it's good that people can choose if to buy them and what to buy.

I think the fact so much has been produced is proof that they're not losing popularity at all yet. The trick will be picking where that point comes - and it will.

My sister said to me the other week that she likes being able to buy these because she (although she grew up with G1) only really remembers the 1990s and the earlier ponies she had to play with were mine or second hand from 1990 onwards.

So a lot of the ponies out now are ponies she would love to own but predated her, and weren't sold here so she didn't find them second hand.

I don't see why those people shouldn't have the chance to buy retro versions, but obviously nobody should feel compelled to do it.

As for the chibi thing, I mentioned it in another thread but I have a general malaise regarding Japanese ideas being taken and put through every single filter because it's currently fashionable. I have nothing against chibi overall as a concept, but just that every company suddenly wants to make money out of it and that's annoying.

I'm not much of a fan of fad popular stuff.

I'm not much into the chibi style. If it's a pony I like I'll search out the basic fun repro, but I'm not purposefully 'catching them all'. There's no room in my small house for them all, LOL.

No not g1.. but more so just I don't think BF ponies would need to go away for there to be chibi g1.

CMC runs along side the main line. ( Same with eqG and the mini eqG).

I think Hasbro dropped the ball on CMC making it show characters only. (Shoulda gone back to what they did for blind bags). My dream line of CMC would include a pool of _all_ ponies from g1~g4.

The Basic Fun ponies are awesome.  It means a lot to me to be able to have minty ponies so easily available.  I won’t ever get tired of that.  Even in the US, most sets were only available for a season or two.  And in those days, most people living outside of cities had no way of knowing what was available until they made the long drive to the mall.  Walmart/Target wasn’t everywhere yet.  It was very hit or miss.    And my parents would never waste gas to get toys.

I really like them-  I especially love the ones that didn't age well, (like the white ponies) the Nightlight-colored Bow Tie, and the Stranger Things AppleJack-  (such fun variations) - but will admit I did buy a set of the Rainbows just because.

I sure hope they keep the line going- it seems to be popular.

As for what seems to be the OP's concern that the BF ponies could be taking the place of other new products-  I don't think so at all.  Basic Fun is using a MLP license to make the ponies- they don't compete with the customers for Hasbro's current "Friendship is Magic" style ponies.  Hasbro can make whatever it wants with the "current" MLP look.

In addition to collectors (probably a small percentage) parents and people in their late 30s early 40s are buying the Basic Fun ponies for themselves or their kids (small kids) motivated by nostalgia    ...   we'll see how long the ride lasts.

I don't like Cutie Mark Crew and I don't like Basic Fun repros and think they should be replaced with more bootleg carrousels. Think about it. Both lines have been going on for more than one year, so they are overdone by now. Carrousels on the other hand are evergreens.

Think even bigger! We need a Hasbroland with 80% being dedicated to all gens of MLP. With exclusive toys being sold there of course. And all kinds of rides. Like a Sonic Rainboom rollercoaster, the Flutter Valley Experience, an EqG mirror mace, Fakies Revenge where we just get fakies thrown at us but it's VR, and so on!

Oh goodie. Gotta love cheap Chinese carnival rides. That's a big nope for me.

I don't like Cutie Mark Crew and I don't like Basic Fun repros and think they should be replaced with more bootleg carrousels. Think about it. Both lines have been going on for more than one year, so they are overdone by now. Carrousels on the other hand are evergreens.
Who wants to collect small MLP toys when you can't even sit on them? I want to sit on them and go slowly in a cirlce to carneval music. Y'all can have your preferences but the future is merry-go-rounds!

ALL OF THIS! All of this needs to happen! :dance2:

Also, life-size replicas of Dream Castle, Canterlot Castle, and every other castle from G1-4. XD

Looks at all the G4 Hasbro stuff I don't want to buy because it's the 9,999,999,999 pinkie pie....

Looks at the Basic Fun reissue of a pony that may have been seen 1 or 2 times in store back in the 80's, 30+ years ago....

Yea, I'm going with the Basic Fun idea on this.

As someone who actually started my G1 collection with the repro ponies, I think that they're very good replicas of the originals. Original 80's ponies are fun to collect because they are the "real thing", but a lot of them can be hard to find in perfect condition (especially to a novice like me who still doesn't understand everything about older gens lol) and I understand that the ponies can develop bacteria due to them being over 30 years old and the fact that plastic does degrade over time as others mentioned. It's safer for young children who may also want to buy the G1 ponies, to get the Basic Fun ones. I do hope that Basic Fun releases more pony characters though!

For some reason this post made me really happy.

Of course the retros should be there for people who want to begin G1 collecting for the first time without all the cost and hassle of the originals. A lot of us have ponies from the old days or years back but there are also a lot of pony folk who get into one generation and then get into others later. Retros are a great and accessible way for people to do that without breaking the bank or worrying about plasticiser or whatever else.

Overall people should collect what makes them happy and not worry too much about what other people think. Reality is that both these and the G4 stuff are currently out on sale so there's something for everyone.

Just maybe some more G1 mashems would appeal too.

That's cool, Twily.

I think some people who are tired of the retro trend don't understand that for some other people the rereleases are their firsts.
There is a misconception that only oldheads are buying retro stuff to have doubles and triples and MIB, but a lot of people are actually giving them to their kids or discover G1 for the first time because they only casually knew of FiM=MLP.

Personally, I would freak out if I could have a 15€ Mimic in perfect condition and I'd go to great lenghts to get one. I love green ponies and sadly Mimic is so hyped and expensive I don't see myself ever owning an original one.

I hope to see many, many more! I’m buying for my nieces to play with as 30
year old plastic = “not for kids”. In addition, I’m not a fan of letting kids play with my “main” collection of mostly childhood ponies...

But I did buy the ST AJ although I had to have her shipped from US. I would love to see some more “new” G1s but in the “old” style.

YES! I really hope either BF or Hasbro will eventually try something HQG1C-esque, and make new characters... ST AJ is an awesome first step towards that. :)

I hope for this too, but it worries me given the AJ precedent that they won't make it out of the US. It bothers me that the international market might get ridden over roughshod. I admit a personal issue with this because right now the exchange rate is weak and I don't have a lot of money - and I shouldn't complain given that the UK has been quite spoiled compared with a lot of Europe and other places, but still. I did hope we wouldn't get regional exclusives when BF decided to bring both rainbows and CP ponies out in multiple places. ST AJ has rather broken that hope.

This!

And while they're at it, give us a proper Paradise -.-

BUT first, increase distribution. Pony fandom is not globally exclusive. There are fans in a lot of countries where ponies were really popular in the eighties that haven't had these in stores at all, and that makes no sense.

Ponies are for everyone. No exclusives, and no exclusions.

No. :O)

I guess I phrased that badly, but I meant the Paradise they promised us in the catalogue as a prototype that never happened. SS Paradise is part of the SS set. This Paradise was meant to come with the PE.

And by us I meant the UK. Because this meant we didn't get Paradise at all.

I would cry if there was a paradise released with no flock. It would feel like the most disappointing thing in the world to have your favorite character not be released without it's gimmick that you loved it so much for.

Paradise was one of my favourite characters growing up, too.  I used to write stories about her.

Even though she was promoted in pamphlets and the fact file, ultimately she didn't exist.

I have the Brazilian one, that's as close as it gets, but it won't ever be the same.

Although I would feel similarly crushed to see Princess Pearl in stores here as Tiffany with a bushwoolie, so I get what you're saying about a remake missing key aspects that made it what you loved growing up. I would also feel conflicted to see SS Shady or Magic Star here since Shady was a favourite childhood pony of mine and Magic Star another that I wrote stories about.

But the thing with Paradise is basically that she doesn't exist. And that's just Hasbro being mean again to the kids in the UK.

But all of that is different then -- let's create a pony that maybe a handful of kids hoped for because they saw it in an advertisement...

vs 1000s of kids had a cherished toy that they bonded with and had fond memories.

Sigh.

Not everything has to be a debate you know? I was just expressing my personal feelings, you're entitled to yours as well. It probably won't happen because BF is only doing the US line anyway, so there's no reason to be so worried about it.

A regular Paradise, Ribbon and Lofty would be high up on my remake wishlist. Some people want Mimic. I want to see Hasbro UK's holes filled, and that includes those three :)

I didn't think I was debating...

I only meant that your want of a deflocked paradise vs my sadness of that
was different based on the amount of people who would want to see that -- in general I think many people who like flocked ponies would be so happy to see a minty flocked pony as well

however more equivalent to potential sadness about tiffany and princess pearl

It came across a little more debateish than I expected, since I really was just saying my view, not challenging the love people have for the SS. I love SS ponies and I  would buy the SS too. But she's not PARADISE to me. That's the difference. That PARADISE doesn't exist. Since I didn't have the chance to grow up with SS ponies, my feelings towards them are obviously a lot different to those you and others who grew up with them have.

As for the Princesses, there are plenty of people in the UK who don't mind. I would actually cry if they sold "Princess Tiffany" here with her bushwoolie. I mean, I'd be annoyed if they sold Sweetie here as Sweet Stuff but I would still buy her, I'd just trash the box xD. But Pearl belongs with FIERY. And that's actually a lot more likely than the Paradise thing since BF are following the US blueprint.

Someone already trampled on the Princess aspect for me here with merchandise going back to dollymix and some of the Primark clothing by calling Princess Amethyst 'Sparkle' so it's only a matter of time for the others too.

I never had Pearl from new either and I've never seen her in box in person, not even as a kid. So seeing one reproduced with the wrong name, wrong accessories and a bushwoolie would break my inner five year old's heart xD.

I think you had them on card :(  So no Dragons or Bushwoolies.

Actually the UK did have both *mwahaha* because some of the weird put together job princesses had bushwoolies for some reason...but yeah, dragons are always better. Always.

I love Bushwoolies too for the record. But I'd rather they had gone with the 2nd set of Princesses instead.

MIND YOU given that basic fun is exporting the US release retros direct to the UK, that would surely mean we'd end up with the dragons anyway? Haha!

I don't have a huge problem with them changing certain things because they're not really releasing G1's like hasbro did back in the 80's. So they're not exact replicas as far as accessories and packaging goes anyways.

So if they want to change certain things I don't take so much of an issue. Heck, I'd even be cool with ponies in g1 style created in different body styles/molds from the 80's. We already see that sort of thing in variants and nirvana ponies anyway.
