So some background, my collection has been on pause for a few years now. Got my career and now I am a homeowner. As I look to the future, I've decided, to transform my tiny basement into a Pony Room. Always wanted one and it would me give me a reason to unpack the collection. I am willing to sink a grand or so into the project but I'll end of with a finished basement, storage, and a sweet pony hoard location.
So peeps, I'd like to see your pony rooms so I can start getting ideas for my own. Before and after pics would be great too. What were some of the challenges you faced in creating a Pony space? What are some tips that you think would save me some time or would make the end product looking nice? Anything to avoid? What are the must haves of a space like this?
-
First spoiler is pics of the pony room in my previous house. Mismatched shelves, constant rearranging while I started collecting.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
This spoiler is my current ponyroom. (The room is physically unfinished- I tacked up white sheets over the studs&insulation as there's no drywall, and bought cheap rugs to cover the plywood floor. Someday when we finish our basement I'll put a pony room down there)
I much prefer the uniform shelving. White book cases on one side, acrylic racks on the opposite wall. More playset space would be nice, but it's a small room.

For sure love those white book shelfs, and that lighting!!!! How much fun us that! I dont collect playsets, but it is something to consider when designing the space. I'll have to keep that in mind. Thank you for the pics!

Yeah those lights are fantastic! Where'd you get them?

::again, waits for Aadra::

Thanks all :) The lights are cheap, battery operated projectors. I think they're from Five Below, but they were gifts so I'm not 100% sure.
Edit to add:
The lights are pretty much these-

There's a pic of the vintage section of mine. I highly suggest getting matching shelves if you can for your pony room. I find it makes everything look more organized and cleaner.

Wow! Fantastic collection by the way! And yes matching shelving seems the best course. What did you use for the risers?

I wish I had a pony room to enjoy my ponies. This dream castle has probably been brought of storage only twice in the past twenty years. When I received Dasher I decided to bring some of my collection out to breath for awhile and meet him.

Gator, I think you have the nicest TAF Buttons I have seen in years.
-
I love that curl! That's why she, too, stays in storage alot. I've had some minty ponies w/ factory curl that, if i had them out, started to loose the curl.
-
I wish so much that I had a pony room. My current living situation means that I've got a very comfortable house but lack the required space. My ponies are all currently in good quality single layer storage bins where they're safe from sunlight or squishing. The containers are transparent, so it kinda-sorta means I get to admire them a bit, but it's just not the same as setting up a dedicated room where everything can be co-ordinated by set or theme. I hope that one day the dream will become reality!

I am here to show you one of the beautiful curses that comes with a pony room! Time to rearrange!
I have one wall of matching shelves and a husband who needs motivating to make more. Until then, I am always on the hunt for awesome display options. Sometime soon there will be a picture of the new shelf--- this is the pile of treasures that had to move out of the way!
One thing i will never do without again- somewhere comfy to sit! The loveseat is nice, and easy to cover with something pink.

Wow, your post could have been written by me! I've also paused my collection for years and recently became a home owner and I'm going to turn a room in the basement into my pony room! Thanks for creating this thread, I'm sure I'll find lots of inspiration here for my basement pony room as well. :)
-
I had a basement pony room, let me just toss some stuff out there. These actually happened to me.
The walls were stone, and though they didn't seem damp, i had a couple boxes that leaned on them and were damaged by invisible moisture.
A 100-year flood happened, and most basements in town flooded. One pony had fallen to the floor overnight, and her package was ruined. She was stored off the floor, just chose a terrible time to jump.
Just a couple thoughts to keep in mind, the basement is awesome and dark and like any other room, has things to consider.
Congrats on pony rooms! I swear I am not trying to be a downer, just realistic!

You have a giant Frilly Frocks! I wish I had been interested in getting her when G3 was current. Not like I have room for her, but she is so neat! I have never seen one in RL.

May 12! That is the tenative date for the May Meet! You could pet her!
I got her from the last Wisconsin Meet i went to, my nephew James had to share the back seat with her! He made a bet with me that if I made most of the cost for her, he would pay the last $20. Everyone at the meet bought something just to help out! It was amazing!
-
Stalking this thread so I can drool over the pony rooms!! I've only got two shelves, but they are all much loved. :)

Lol! I will mark that down in case we can make it. That's great! What does she even run these days?

I saw one on ebay for $350, I think? I was happy about that, since i paid $80 for her!

I could stare at your room/collection all day... are those IKEA Billy shelves on the left? What are the measurements of your risers? They look like the perfect dimensions for display. My husband is going to make me some. Oh, and are those those clear plastic egg trays you have your seaponies in?!
-
Aadra310 Your room is so perfectly organized!! I love the way you display the MIB/MOCs!
-
I love the pictures everyone! :)
-
I wish I had a room for myself. With 5 people living in two small rooms it's impossible. But I enjoy seeing yours!
-
Aadra, I just noticed the teeny tiny dollymix shelf- I love it!
-
If anyone has facebook I have a link below to my pony collection page! :)

Here is mine. As you can see, my ponies are not really organized as such.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
And here is a display I have in my bedroom. The ponies in the corner are all from my and my sister's childhood herd. But not all of my childhood herd. Some of them are in the pony room. and please disregard the dead plant :P

Woah, Sunset, I love your pony room ! This is my favorite way to display a collection. I wish I could make that kind of room at once. :frolic:

Thanks! I made it myself :). Some of the shelving i also made, with a little help from family, to accommodate the playsets.

Achab, I love your collection! That facebook page is really fun, too- expect a friend request when I get off work!
Sunset, please tell us the story of the quilt. I am a huge quilting fan (maybe not a good quilter, but a fan!) and I would love to see more pictures!
ETA: Someone else came in and posted about this, but I crave more details!

I don't know that I'm a good quilter either. I'm entirely self taught and I only quilt when I have a particular project in mind so my stuff is definitely not professional quality. Also the pony quilt is the most ambitious project to date and was definitely a learning experience. I bought a set of vintage bed sheets probably 10 years ago with the idea of turning it into a quilt. By the time I got around to it years later, I couldn't bring myself to cut them up. So I found directions online on how you can print your own images on cloth. I was able to do it but only later found out that the kind of ink printer I have is not the permanent kind. So I can never wash it without washing out the printed portions. But good news is it stays in the pony room where the cats are not generally allowed and the bed only gets used once in a blue moon. I do have the vintage sheets on the bed :)
I did use a combo of g3 and g4 prints on it even though it is primarily g1 themed. The border also has appliques of ponies from all 4 gens.

Wow! There are some amazing rooms here. Out of curiosity what is everyone using for risers in those bookcases/shelves? I have been talking to my husband for awhile now about making a collection room (he's almost on board, as long as he gets some space for his Transformers) and would love to know what types of risers everyone is using. Are they custom built, dish racks, spice racks, etc?

On my cabinet it's custom build with cardboard wrapped in gift wrap, and on the shelves, it's chocolate praline box.
In fact, the most important is to keep a line, like if you decide to it with a certain type of box or books, keep to it everywhere!

Thanks, starstrider! Ponies are part of my earliest memories and there’s only been a few years in my tweens when I didn’t buy them! So, you could say I’ve been collecting for over 3 decades! My favorites are my childhood ponies like Posey, Starshine, princess Primrose, baby Lofty... and then others I got later that were memorable like Tex (first big brother), TAF Merriweather (my dad found)... stuff like that! My mom has been a HUGE part of my collecting and we have had tons of fun over the years. Nostalgia, my mom, and a good friend are all reasons I hold ponies so dear!

Oh RoseNoire, that so made me laugh :).
And so like here - the ponies have ousted the china from the china cabinet so they can take over, and there's now faint mutterings from me about 'another cabinet' ......
Are your ponies plotting a take-over of the cabinet with trains/trucks(?) in above them? :)
-
Good one RoseNoire, that was funny
At least they are tucked away safely

Aawh sorry, I didn't saw your post.
The one near my bed is Kewlox, it's a simple line of "cheap" furnitures. The other one in the shelves, I got it on a french online flea market like craigslist for the US, so I'm sorry I don't know from where it came from. But they can be found in furniture stores I guess, like ikea? At least, I'm pretty sure they have somethin' like that.
RoseNoire > How impressive, probably the best between the best!!
