Title: MLP: The Movie Discussion Thread
Post by: Bekuno on September 12, 2017, 10:06:05 PM
*The movie is here! Please tread carefully if you are trying to avoid spoilers :)*

Hey folks! Now that the FIM subforum is gone it's time to start our integration into the corral. I think the best way to start is with the MLP Movie, which is only a few weeks away!!

Are you excited for the movie? Skeptical? Want to know what's going on but not sure if you'd like to go see it? Come share your thoughts!

I've personally dug up everyyyy little bit of info I could on the film since the very start. Before the end of the FIM Forum, the enitre plot had practically been uncovered! I will be adding spoilers to this thread, but I'll be keeping everything under spoiler tags. If you plan to discuss movie spoilers, please also keep them under spoiler tags for those who aren't interested!

I'm really excited for it! I'm hoping I'll be able to see it on release day. It's the day after one of my dad's paydays so I should be able to. I hope to get some of the special cups and whatnot they have at the theater.

Right now I'm really looking forward to seeing what Songbird Serenade and Princess Skystar are like. I love both their designs so much and want to get a lot of their merch, so I'm excited to see what they're like.

I'm pumped!  I love the themes that have been revealed so far, like

I do feel a bit sad that I've seen so many spoilers, but it's inevitable since I follow toy news and see the toys.  (For what it's worth, the toys look cool, lol.)

I wasn't too excited at first but I'm more excited now then I was. Im excited to see the seaponies and

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

I'm trying to avoid major movie spoilers but I've already got a few of the toys including Skystar and her musical shell, Tempest brushable and Tempest Build a Bear.

Tempest is intriguing and I want to know more about her.

I'm looking forward to it.   I mean, I'm still trying to keep my expectations down because usually I only go to the theater for Disney and Pixar stuff and it would be unfair to expect that level of quality.  However, I do have a small group of coworkers who like ponies that are going to go see the movie with me on opening night.  And I totally want to get a couple of the concession souvenirs.  So for me, it is going to be an event!

I just watched the second trailer and I'm hyped, so I'm glad there's a new thread for discussion :D!
It was cool to hear Capper speak in the second trailer :)
Also, I'm really digging the animation style. The ponies look so fluid when they move!

I've been avoiding trailers because they always end up giving away so much of the "good bits".  But I will watch them after I've already seen the movie, lol.

What's the air date?

Cappers voice felt really out of place to me, like it was just a little too deep to fit his character? I'm sure I'll feel different in the film but it threw me off

Something about the movie awakens a weird fascination in me. I guess it's simply the idea that the Mane Six (Mane Six? Who are these Mane Six? We Arenagoers know only of Starlight Glimmer!) basically spend the entire film not interacting with ponies. It adds a new, fresh tone that we have rarely seen before in the franchise - that of a vast world of various fantasy creatures beyond the ponies' dwellings (the G1 comics did hint at this, but never got to go that in-depth on it. They're still awesome, all the same). I also have great affections for the animation style (particularly the Sonic Rainboom seen in two of the released trailers) - if I feel the need to see the film in theaters, I'll do it if it means reviving animation in this form.

Oh, and Capper is such a weird addition to an MLP film that I find him awesome for some reason. Which leads me into my next point:
I just watched the second trailer and I'm hyped, so I'm glad there's a new thread for discussion :D!

Capper's voice really does sound weird. I guess that's the way we're getting it though, although the surreal concept of Capper is still admirable.

I don't think they're going to be able to go too deep into anything though because of how much there is.  You'll be surprised how short 99 minutes can be when you are trying to throw everything including the kitchen sink in.

I'm trying to decide if I want to watch this when it comes out or not. I'll probably have to go on my own, which doesn't bother me, but I don't want to feel like it's a waste of money. Some of the scenes though look like they will be awesome on a big screen... The other thing is the UK is highly unlikely to get all the cinema goodies that go along with the film, which is frustrating. Will definitely be getting it when it comes out on DVD though - hopefully for Xmas.

I'll be watching the movie anyway to see if it's better than the trailer made it out to be and to see if the "new look" and animation plays out better but the song from Sia (which is already out) wasn't really that great IMO.

I just watched a music video that had Songbird Serenade singing. I would've liked it if it weren't for this live action woman wearing a black one piece with Songbird Serenade's hairstyle flailing around. I didn't like that at all. ><

I assume you've never seen a Sia music video before? That's Maddie Ziegler, she performs in the music videos for a lot of Sia's songs. Also Songbird Serenade's design is based directly on Sia herself (https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/2694481.main_image.jpg?strip=all).

I finally found The Stormy Road to Canterlot  Just to be sure before I start reading it's all backstory on Tempest, right? So nothing that happens in the book will spoil anything in the movie?

If it IS Firefly, then the two she's with could also be FiM versions of G1 ponies. We'll probably have to wait and see though.

I think it's just inevitable with the vast number of background ponies needed for both the show and the movie that some of them are going to color match some previous gen ponies.  I think we would need a similar symbol or name to really say it's a referance.   Bu it is fun trying to spot them.

Ok, so yeah.  You convinced me.  I just couldn't resist :)

On a different note, does anybody else ever use moviefone.com?  Looks like on their website, every time a theater has show times listed for the 2017 movie they have listed the g1 movie instead.

I said it once and I'll say it again, I love the fluidity of the animation and the slightly tweaked character designs. I especially love the heaviness of their hooves.
Look how Twilight places hers, they have joints and are no longer animated like arms. I like small details like that.

Tempest would probably look horrible on the show because they would just use the Sassy Saddles or Cadence greyhound pony model.
But do you think she will appear in the next season (voiced by someone else)?

I am definitely going to see the movie while it's in theaters, but I'm undecided on whether to see it opening night.  On the one hand I love the energy of opening night.  On the other hand it's going to be mostly bronies, probably.  And I sort of feel they will be overly noisy?

Hmm.  What are you guys doing (for the peeps who are planning to see it in theaters)?

I'm going on opening night.  I've found a couple of other fans at work to go with.  You may or may not be surprised at the number of "geeky" people who can be found working at a library.  I don't think any of them consider themselves "bronies " though.  My city is relatively small so I wasn't thinking there would likely be many bronies.  On the other hand, it is a college town, so maybe?  But I am going to try to go to the theater further from campus so that might mitigate the college crowd. (It's the nicer theater anyway). But the deciding factor may be which one is going to carry the special concessions merch.

In regards to next season,  I think it's unlikely that any big name characters appear unless they can get that voice actor for one episode.  I think any new characters in season 8 will actually be new.  Which is fine with me because I want lots of new character toys.

I admit, the Sia music video is growing on me. I find it kinda funny how it has a bit of "spoilers" in it, though. xD

I wouldn't worry too much about a bunch of bronies being in the theaters on opening night. (TBH, I feel the brony crowd has died down a lot over the years?) Since there will most likely be 7pm/8pm early showings that night, I'd imagine there will be a variety in the crowd. If anything, I'm more "worried" about loud kids than loud bronies. And I say that in a "Please if you kid is crying in the theater, don't just sit there and act like nothing's happening. Go calm them down. " way.

I am planning on going to see it opening night because I know I certainly would be looking at full movies spoilers that same night if I didn't. xD Plus, I feel it's the kind of movie that would be more fun to see it "first".

I haven't watched the Sia song video yet but I'm betting that if that is the official video that it's the "radio" version and the version in the actuall movie may be arranged differently.

That's what I'm thinking. The song byself now doesn't quite "sound" like an MLP movie song. It feels more "Disney/Dreamworks" to me.

After hearing the full versions of the songs, the only "in movie" that I really liked, excluding Rainbow, was Open Your Eyes. I feel like the rest of the movie ones sound like they would need visuals for me to get into it.

If the trailer song is Off to See the World, I liked it. But i find myself having No Better Feeling on repeat (but I am biased because I adore CL, especially during her 2NE1 days).

The only song I didnt listen all the way through was Neighsayers. I just didnt like it at all.

I'm pretty sure that one's going to be at the start of the film when they're prepping for the friendship celebration.
I'm guessing Sia's "Rainbow" will be the big finale song.

I really like "One Small Thing". I think that may end up being my favorite  :P

I'm pretty sure that's because they got a live orchestra for the film, so all that music is just the background score.

I found the full version of the songs on Youtube. I really like "One Small Thing" and "We've Got This Together" I still can't get in to "Off to See the World" even though I liked it in the trailer. I don't want to listen to the Tempest song because I don't want to be spoiled. I also think "Rainbow" will be the last song.

I also found the full versions on youtube and listened to them all  :P

I didn't feel that "Open Up Your Eyes" had any spoilers. I do feel like there's a point in the song where they may show Tempest's backstory, as the music gets a little less threatening. It never actually says anything of concern in the lyrics though. It seems to be a very personal ballad from her.

The songs sound so Broadway with the orchestration. I love them, especially Tempest's. Tempest and Starlight should be friends.

Just had a listen to the album's list of songs (minus Sia's as I listened to it before the album's release) and didn't have a changed opinion on them. Props to anyone that has favorites but I'm really hoping the movie is worth the wait.

I'm begrudgingly excited about this movie.  I didn't want to get excited about this movie.  I was content with being a major grump about it.  But...Tempest, man.  I couldn't resist Tempest.  She sold me on actually being excited to see this film.  And the soundtrack just made me more excited.  I have a feeling Skystar is going to be super-obnoxious, but Tempest's song blew me away.  And I hate to admit this, I REALLY hate to admit this, but I loved Capper's song, and I've got a feeling I'm gonna like that pirate bird girl.  But Tempest is what's gonna make this movie amazing for me, I think.  I've already developed a Tempest Shadow collection, and the movie isn't even out yet.  Hot Topic has a shirt of her that I'm definitely gonna wear when my bff and I go to see it!

I'm excited to see the movie. I've got a Queen Novo shirt already from We Love Fine. I think I like these seaponies  much as the gen1 version. I'm definitely going to go watch this in theaters.
I've actually just moved to the Salem/Portland area of Oregon and would love to see the film with anyone on here who would like to go. Getting to know some pony fans in a new city would be wonderful. ☺

I've also bought a few Tempest things before seeing the movie. I have her BAB, brushable and the prequel book about her.

I just realized that Skystar's musical shell must be playing the melody of "One Small Thing" I couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be before.

We got four new short clips from the movie today! Some stuff we've seen in trailers. Three of them are clips of songs.

Songbird's into at the start of the film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdYudMJ_lMU
Start of "Time to be Awesome": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIG7o2tTumo
(this is probably the one we've seen the least clips of in trailers)

While maybe not a direct callback, I feel like the recently posted clip of Princess Skystar's song sort-of gives that feel to it given the ponies are reacting somewhat similarly to how Megan did in the original song

So that Guardians of Harmony figure of a hippogriff named "Stratus Skyranger"? I have not seen mention of him anywhere. I don't think he even shows up in the film

I finally found the prequel comic book. :) :) There is also a movie comic book but I put that one back.  Target had a large display of movie toys and books today.

Edit: There is also a Making of My Little Pony the movie special on Discovery family tonight at 7/6 central and repeated again at 11:30/10:30 tonight. I don't know if it will give away any spoilers though.

I also finished the prequel comics and it seems to hint at things that will happen in the movie. Thoughts about the comics in the spoiler.

I felt that it was a cute little special, and it has made me more excited for the movie than I already was.  The only "spoiler" that I can remember hearing would be
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
but that is more of a "unless you already knew about this beforehand or saw a specific toy" thing. There wasn't anything "new", spoiler-wise, outside of the usual "sneak peek at some scenes".

Watching the special, it is very nice that (granted, I already knew about this from the start) they kept the original VAs for the Mane 6. I mean, a lot of kid-shows-turned-into-movies have a tendency to change all of the VAs and that can be a bummer. I know that one of the big complaints about the Ninjago movie that came out a few weeks back.

I've never been hooked on g4 and never watched fim, but the chance to see My Little Pony on the big screen is too fantastic not to. I still hadn't decided if I wanted to see it though, but yesterday I talked to grandma on the phone and she asked about a post I've made about it on fb and if anyone would be going with me and when I said no one wanted to she offered to go with me . So now it's decided, I have a movie date with granny where we're gonna see My Little Pony and I am really excited!

Now I just have to decide if I should read up about the g4 and /or see fim before I go to the theatre.. Thankfully, beong totally uninterested about fim, I have avoided every spoiler so far and only seen one trailer. The swedish voices stinks so I hope there will be screenings in the original language as well that I can catch.

That's funny. Because I'm the opposite, I can't wait for the German and Dutch dubs to drop because I am fed up with all the original pony voices except for Tabitha's Rarity.
Only reason I'll be checking out the original dub is because of Kristin Chenoweth.

German Tempest is Maite Kelly! Can't wait to hear her song in full!

Sad to hear that apparently one of the storyboard writers went to see the movie and got kicked out as it was believed she was with someone that was filming the movie at the theater. Hope she got to see the movie again later. The making of special was interesting and gave me a bit of a boost in excitement (not enough to pay to see in theaters mind you as it's expensive) but it's a start.

The only free stuff at my theatre was a certificate that said "My First Movie" that kids could write their names on. It has a picture of the cast and on the back of it was a colouring page.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

This is all I can think of right now but I'm sure I'll come up with more after thinking it over. I will definitely be getting this on blu-ray when it comes out.

Just watched it too.
It was good.  :)  Not a masterpiece, but still an enjoyable watch.
I'm just glad we got a new 2D animated theatrical film for the first time in years.
Both the scope and animation of it all makes it stand out a little more from the typical two-part premieres and finales in the show.

I was able to catch a viewing of it tonight, and I was honestly really impressed. I genuinely think I might try to catch it a second time before it leaves theaters.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

My main complaint is that I didn't see any of the concession goodies at the theater i went to :( Does anyone know what theaters are carrying them? Will they be at major chains or more independent theaters? If I go a second time I want to try and go to a theater that has the souvenir stuff.

yeah! i was so bummed i couldn't find any of the movie merch! rarity actually gets a super cute figure and i miss out on it! i'm definitely going to see this in theaters more than once, but i haven't been able to find ANY information on where to find these! i think it all just depends on the luck of the draw if your theater ordered them, but i don't want to pay inflated ebay prices for them! ugh!

Just got back and I really enjoyed it :). It wasn't perfect by any means but it was enjoyable.  I'll definitely be getting it on DVD when it comes out.

My theater also didn't have any of the movie merch. :(  Though they did have the little certificate that someone mentioned earlier.

Thought I'd share this little story.  I and another friend were really early and the theater was almost empty.  But there was an adult man sitting in the row in front of us and he turned around and commented on not being the only adult there without a child.  Turns out his daughter is a fan (didn't ask how old she was) and I kind of assumed from the story that they watch the show together?  Anyway, he had to be away from home for work and so couldn't be there to watch it with his daughter.  So they were both watching it in different theaters in different towns but at the same time so they could watch it "together ".  How cute is that!?

Just got back from it.  I loved it!

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

My roommate watched it with me--she is neither a 'brony' nor a collector but she catches the show from time to time--and she liked it too.

Thinking back to the trailers, I think something that stands out about the MLP movie is that it's SINCERE.  Sooo many Dreamworks and Sony kids movies are just fart jokes and sassy/snarky animals, set to a modern radio soundtrack.  THANK YOU to the makers of the MLP movie for having an original soundtrack and making something genuine instead of stringing together a series of cynical "the guys in marketing said the kids love this joke" moments.

Eh, in that case I'd actually like to hear what regular movie critics who are not in the fandom or anti-fandom think of it as an animated movie and nothing else.
From what I have heard so far it is mediocre with nice songs and that's already 10 times better than Hasbro's live-action movies.

I think it will be hard to find unbiased reviews of it either way;  hardcore fans will love it (because whether it was objectively good or not, it was faithful to the source material, unlike for example live-action Transformers movies) and 'real' critics are going into it with 20+ years of thinking of MLP as "that schmaltzy toy for (ugh) little girls".

I've already seen some reviews that make me go "whaaaa? did we watch the same movie?".

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

One review starts out "Imagine eating a giant bag of Skittles, then throwing it all up in a fit of sugar-induced nausea and you’ll have some idea of what it feels like to sit through 'My Little Pony: The Movie.'  Shrieky, garish and incessantly perky."   It's hard for me to believe this person went in with an open mind.

However, they do go on to say something that I think is true: "The movie version of the long-running TV show 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' is unlikely to win any new converts."   I think that's true, and I think it's okay.  They do try to make the movie accessible to people who don't already watch the TV show.  But you're going to get more out of it if you already know the characters. (Which is natural . . . like watching Return of the Jedi makes more sense / has more impact if you've seen A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.)   I think kids (and not-kids) who DO already know the characters will enjoy it.
Title: Re: MLP: The Movie Discussion Thread
Post by: Zapper on October 07, 2017, 01:35:58 PM
Well do we really need "new converts" anyways?

It's sad that people are still hating on MLP just for being perky and colorful. What now, should little kids watch grimdark cartoons that make them cry? I think the problem is that people expect MLP to be a drama or mystery thriller just because one is called "Tempest" and has a scar

Take out the music and beautiful African visuals and you end up with a mediocre Hamlet rip with an unlikeable protagonist. But critics still love The Lionking.
It's important to know a bit of context for MLP, so I agree most critics are probably biased one way or another.

No no, the only kids movies allowed now are:

- CGI animated characters in ~the real world~ generating a relentless string of fart jokes, poop jokes, and 'hijinks' alongside a minor celebrity (Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Lee, etc) who is paid enough to put up with it

- smarmy CGI animals (usually) in a totally CGI world who constantly drop culture references and songs, with the same "misfit who doesn't fit in" lesson that Dreamworks and Sony Pictures will never get tired of ever.

- Pixar / Disney

:P

That reminds me that the Sony Hack revealed that they wanted the MLP movie to be like Smurfs and Transformers with ponies coming to the real world and all trying to fight a big threat to both worlds (they wanted Celestia and Luna to have a secret evil brother who was more powerful than them because of reasons).

Finely saw the movie.  It's been a long time coming.

[spoiler]I was so glad that this did not suffer from the TNG movie formula I was dreading (for the most part).

DHX needs to ditch Flash now that they have Toon Boom.  While a television series using it won't reach this level of quality, it will still be light years ahead of Flash.

I said it escaped not becoming like the TNG movies for the most part.  The part that didn't escape was the sense that they needed to give all of the characters something to do even if it added little.  In fact, the Mane 5 minus Twilight were the weakest part of the movie, especially Fluttershy, Rarity, and Applejack who were just there and doing their stereotypical shticks.  The Storm King was also in that awful valley of being too silly to be a serious villain (seriously, he invades Equestria to steal their magic because he wants to improve his brand?) but not allowed to just go full on gag villain to have some fun.

Okay, with that out of the way.  It was a good movie.  I found Tempest a more compelling villain than her boss.  The rodent was annoying, but fortunately not mugging the camera has much as I feared he would.  However, the headline was Twilight.

Seriously, when Twilight tried to the steal the pearl.  I was like, "This isn't Twilight.  Twilight's conflicts always come from the fact she's so blindly by the book."  Seeing this darker side to her was absolutely refreshing.  I doubt we'll see it in the series though.  One of the little kids at the theater burst into tears when she erupted at the others.

The PG rating was well deserved.  Tempest frying things looked brutal, and the Storm King was (kind of) killed off in the end.  And these things were needed in the film.  We needed to see how dangerous and brutal Tempest was to understand the stakes of the chase.  And the Storm King had to go.

Even the setup worked.  It was the standard two part story setup with the royals quickly incapacitated but those petrifying crystals were such a great device for it.  We could see them overwhelm the princesses' magic to show they were powerful.

So, yeah, I give a thumbs up to this movie.  I hope the experience will help the writers in writing the series.  It probably won't, but who knows.[/spoilers]

I totally agree with the not winning over new converts thing.  It would have to be on a Disney/Pixar level to do that.  And Hasbro is no Pixar.  And it shouldn't have to be.  I'd say the movie is about on the same level as Trolls and other movies like that.  In fact it shares a lot in common with Trolls except MLP has original music.  Which can be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it.

I saw this one video on YouTube in which the reviewer talks about dragging her 8 year old son to see the movie and she justified it to him that you have to see the bad movies along with the good as a reviewer.  Soooo, going in biased much?

I was ready for them to fall flat on their face with this.  I had seen it before with the TNG Star Trek movies.  And I was glad to be wrong.

However, it does seem to not care about expanding its audience.  Which is the real shame of it.  I still wish they had gone with an original group of ponies (even if it was still in Equestria).  Then FiM fans and newcomers would be in the same place with them.

Excluding the whole "more powerful than Celestia/Luna just 'cause" thing, I wouldn't mind if it turned out they had a brother but I say that in a "...Why aren't there any male alicorns (in general)?" way. That is probably the one that will always bother me about the whole Flurry Heart situation. But yeah... good thing Sony didn't get the movie. We don't need another "cartoons come into the real world" movie....unless it's like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but that's a special case.

Hi everyone,

I'm excited about the UK release coming up in a couple of weeks, but I have a question:

- will this movie make sense if you've only seen Season 1 of FiM?  I want to go with my 2 children but we've only seen Season 1
- also how scary it is?  My youngest (age 5) found the start of Season 2 got a little too scary.  I would take her anyway but I would need to prepare her and also be ready to take her out for 5 mins if it got too intense.

THANKS!!

I have a question:

- will this movie make sense if you've only seen Season 1 of FiM?

You just need to know a few things, but they are well explained in the first ten minutes of the movie:

-Twilight is the Princess of friendship now, not just a regular gifted unicorn
-There are four princesses as a whole and Twilight is the latest one

What the princesses do is very easy to grasp as well as what Twilight's relationship to them is like.
In fact, most of the other things in the show are glossed over or largely ignored. Like there is Starlight Glimmer, Twilight's own pupil, but she is only seen in the background and does nothing. It doesn't make much sense for the movie (since Starlight has become something like a 7th main pony) but it won't bother anyone who hasn't paid much attention to the show.

The shoutouts are also kept to a minimum. We see Discord as a baloon animal and Muffin appears one time being a failure, but other than that the shoutout humor is actually for parents

Yeah, Twilight now is an alicorn and she's the Princess of Friendship.  Other than that, you don't really need any knowledge from any specific episodes of the show or whatnot.

The action is pretty on-par with the action in "A Canterlot Wedding" (which I think was the Season 2 finale you mentioned), except a bit more intense.

The pony villain, Tempest Shadow, gets a lot of screentime and is scary (not in a shouty way, though, more in a plotting way.)

Listened to a few songs, I was expecting to be impressed but they were just so-so. Capper's song sounded like it was trying to do more then one musical style and fell a little flat, One Small Thing was just eh tand Tempest's song sounded like it was trying too hard to do something like Don Bluth during the sequelitis days with the fun sucked out of it.

I felt it had quite a few plot holes from them trying to throw everything in at once but I had a lot of fun. They hyped up pirates for this with the toys and then barely had much screen time on the ship. I'm hoping between the tv show  and comics some of those things get answered.

I saw it twice--once at night, once in the day as a matinee.  The night one was fun because the theater was almost empty (privacy) and the matinee was fun because I got to hear kids cheering, gasping, and laughing along with the movie.  Made me very happy for all the little MLP fans having this magical experience.  Some of them were losing their minds during the opening.  :)

The only thing I wish was it was longer!  I could tell someone on the corporate side had made them make it shorter than originally intended.

I was looking at the gross totals adjusted for inflation.  The 2017 movie needs to make $4M more to catch up to the 1986 movie.  And I think it needs to make at least $6M this next weekend to have any staying power through the holiday season.  It's a good movie, but I think it still has a steep uphill climb to being more than a flash in the pan.  And I think it needs to be not just for MLP but 2D animation as well.

I have a question:

- will this movie make sense if you've only seen Season 1 of FiM?

The shoutouts are also kept to a minimum. We see Discord as a baloon animal and Muffin appears one time being a failure, but other than that the shoutout humor is actually for parents

I just saw the movie and have to say I liked it a lot. Great animation and enjoyed the songs!

Sorry but imo that should have been Starlight trying to protect and not this overhyped running gag. This would have also nicely explained why she wasn't trying to help the M6.
I can always imagine Discord was on vacation in the Phantom Zone or whatever, but Starlight was clearly shown to be at the festival.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Is it too much to hope for an extended edition on BluRay someday?  LOL.

I bet they sliced and diced the CRAP out of the movie- they had to make it short because of the age of the primary target audience was probably on the young side...

Sorry for that xD I'm gonna buy the DVD in the future, would like to watch the original version, because this man just bluntly reading the lyrics ruined the songs for me.

I went with my friend on Sunday to see the movie. Though we nearly missed it: found out on Friday that it is coming off circuit here this Thursday. And our original plan had been to go this Saturday afternoon. Oh well, I will just have to have a pony spa day instead.

Anyway, back to the thread topic: neither of us know anything about these characters, or their back story as we have previously had nothing to do with G4 being primarily G1 collectors. So we had no expectations whatsoever and perhaps because of this we both really enjoyed the movie. My favourite characters were Rainbow Dash and Tempest. My friend really liked Rainbow Dash and Rarity. So pleased we went  :)

As a g1 collector, I do not know much about g4 canon (apart from hearing snippets of FiM that my kid watches on tv) so I went to the cinema with an open mind (and an excited, 5 year old daughter!)  ;)

My girl loved it and boasted to me that it wasn't scary (Zootropolis is her benchmark scary movie).

Lots of singing -
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Tempest - I really liked her character! Brooding, calculated, controlled, precise. I have mentioned elsewhere that I find her very feline, she even stalks like a panther. Oh, her perfect eyeliner - gimme!

Storm King:
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Tempest's broken horn -
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Anyway, it was an ok movie - coming from someone who doesn't know much about g4.
I would put it in the same class as a Barbie movie - not quite Disney standard  ;) but still lots of fun and hugely enjoyed by my kid!  :thumb: I know that she will be requesting the DVD...

but other than that the shoutout humor is actually for parents
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
That shout out is not limited for parents, the target audience could have easily gotten it, as there is nothing stopping them knowing the song.  A lot of the shout outs seemed to be for "whoever", to be honest, which was the best way to do them in my opinion - they blended in well.

And yeah, saw it yesterday, and my reactions are mostly positive - I am so happy I got to see it at the cinema, and while there were the odd flaws, the good parts of the movie made up for them, in my opinion, and it was a very awesome experience.  Expect a YouTube review, when I can get one done (I hope to review something else before hand, though).

Anyone else thing Songbird Serenade should've had a bigger role other than "oh hey, I'm here"? She didn't really do anything in the movie except get captured and sing. Would've thought a celebrity pony would've done more like gone with the ponies to help defeat Storm King.

Yes, Sia was. I think Al just means that she's not about to voice act well enough to get a more significant amount of lines. But regardless, the lines she did have was in fact her.

I guess Sia's just the first person I've heard to do both singing and speaking in the same media but sound different as FiM has two different actors for the characters on the show, one does signing, the other does voice. G3 had this but the voices were clearly the same.

I guess it's in the... ear of the beholder?  Somebody complained that Wysteria didn't get a song in The Princess Promenade, but she did, and I had to point out that "Friendship and Flowers" was Wysteria's song, if I remember correctly.  That reviewer (if it was the reviewer and not a commenter) most likely didn't even realise it was the same person, even though Tabitha St. Germain did both the character voice and the singing voice.

In G4, maybe the actresses who don't sing for their characters have a hard time keeping the voices for those characters while they sing?  Previous generations have shown that some of them are capable of singing, so maybe the character they play has the "wrong" voice for them to sing in?  It's probably harder to sing in a different voice and still sound good, however good you are at voice acting.

For Sia, there would be no point in crediting her as a voice if she didn't do the acting part.  They would have just credited the voice actresses and promoted the fact there was a song performed by Sia.  They explicitly said that Sia was going to be Songbird Serenade.

EDIT: Sorry, I went off on a bit of a tangent there, but yeah, sometimes the voice can sound different when it's the same person - hence the G3 thing I mentioned.

Well consider me one of those that didn't recognize Wysteria's VA doing the singing. I mean, there were scenes that at least made it look like Wysteria was singing. I guess in that instance, the song was good enough as is. On topic of Sia's song, Hasbro made a pretty cool music video with it:

That March date on Amazon must have been a placeholder. Ads are now saying Jan 9 as the release date for the dvd. I'm hoping for some cool behind the scene things, though I'm guessing if anything we'll get the behind-the-scene short bits that were released on tv right before the movie came out.

I was always told in various singing groups growing up that you're "supposed" to be (mostly) accentless when singing.

I might end up getting both the Target and Walmart versions, apparently the water bottle is a nice metal one, so that sounds pretty nice! Perhaps I'll get the Target one after I get this week's paycheck and then the Walmart one in a week or two.

I heard from someone online that Hasbro was disappointed with the theater ticket sales of the movie (although the person who posted that didn't back it up with any source), so hey, anyone who picks up more than one copy of the dvd will be encouraging the idea of future MLP movies, I'm sure. :)

Has anyone redeemed the free digital download with the BlueRay? I'm trying to figure out if I should do iTunes or UltraViolet--can we do both? Can you download the UV version, or do you have to stream online? Looks like you should be able to download those . . .

I don't know how it is in every area, but around here anyway it seems as though no one is stocking the Blu-ray at all besides Target and Walmart. I went to Best Buy and f.y.e. to find DVDs only. I had to go to Walmart anyway and ended up finding the set with the water bottle there.

Huh, as far as I know the movie made its money back and then some.
But nowadays a movie is considered a flop if it doesn't meet Marvel superhero blockbuster standards, so eh

I redeemed mine just a bit ago. It gave me the option of iTunes, or using either Vudu or FandangoNow. I dont have an account with any of these servies, so I randomly picked Vudu. Had to create an account, and its primarily for streaming. BUT if you also download the VuduToGo app you can play the movie (or anything in your Vudu account) offline, so it works as a download. You still have to go through their app instead of just having the file, but it works.  :hmm:

I know right!? The movie industry is so wonky these days.

I was hoping it would have done amazing, to encourage Hollywood to truly believe traditional animation can do well in theaters again. :P

Well, darn, there's a water bottle? If it's a neat one I may get that one as well.
I picked up the Target exclusive and redeemed the digital code on Vudu. I'm unfamiliar with the app and would have preferred a straight video file, but it'll do!

Late to the party, but I ended up seeing the movie in theatres back in October. I wasn't intending to, but my friend said she wanted to see it so I tagged along. I'm not that interested in the newer seasons, but I thought the movie was pretty fun. I really liked the new characters a lot, I can't decide if I like Capper, the pirates, or Skystar/Novo more, they all were likeable in my opinion. Also, Really loved the animation style.

My one nitpick... (in spoiler just in case people were waiting for the DVD/bluray release)

in answer to your nitpick,  I think this lovely video might answer why the rest of the main 6 aren't aliccorns, and what really is required to even be an ascended alicorn.

I agree, Twilight and Pinkie were majorly out of character there. It's a standard movie trope to have your characters fight and then have to make up to complete the third act. (Like in the recent movie It, the kids spend the entire movie forming a friendship and discovering they are stronger together...only to have a fight and separate in the third act, for practically no reason.) It was annoying to see it here, too.

Well I went to two Wal-Mart's in the Salem OR area and not only did they not have the water bottle but they didn't even have the blu ray by itself. Only DVDs and digital codes. Stock was very limited too.

I’m sorry you didn’t get the water bottle StarDapple. The Walmart where I bought my copy only had the Blu ray combo pack packaged with the water bottle and DVDs. They didn’t have the Blu ray on its own either.

I'm going to download the other songs that I'm missing from the movie soundtrack (Only the ones that were in the movie) "Time to Be Awesome" and "Rainbow" I found I liked "Rainbow a lot better once I saw how it's used in the movie. I still love Tempest 's "Open Up Your Eyes"

I agree that it made sense for Twilight. It also nicely led into Tempest telling Twilight that she is better off alone. Without the previous incidents Twilight wouldn't have been able to fully understand Tempest's POV.
I really do think critics have been too harsh on this movie, both in and outside fandom.

Just bought the Walmart version! Currently downloading the my digital copy on Vudu Go. Just made a Vudu account specifically for this since iTunes refuses to install on my laptop for some reason (I've tried installing it many times in the past and for some reason it just won't work).

2.2% downloaded so far!

Next week I'll buy the Target version! :)

That would be awesome, thank you!! Haha yes, I know what you mean - I found an activity book for movie fans and was expecting it to be for fans of all ages, or at least pose a bit of a challenge with the puzzles. Nope, it was totally geared towards young kids! :P

The stickers themselves are just a glossy image of glitteriness vs actually being glittery, so thats a bummer. I really just wanted the movie regardless so oh well

I'm impressed the movie seems to be selling so well on disk-

I was hoping to see it on Netflix soon, but it may be another year if it remains this popular ;)

although... maybe they will release it early anyway- (like Trolls)- in order to promote the toys and merch- I hope so!

Thanks so much Prince_Sunbeam! Wow, I agree, the "fake glittery" stickers are indeed kind of a bummer, but I'm really digging the Target exclusive alternative DVD sleeve! It's *almost* tempting to want to make a trip to the US for it. :P

That Target Blu Ray packaging is super sweet.
Annoyingly enough the movie is only available on DVD here so far, and in such short supply my local store sold out in mere days. I'll keep an eye out for the Blu Ray maybe.

I'm just overall disappointed at the content that could have - or was almost - in the film, between the prequel book and the official art book. I mean, don't get me wrong, I liked the movie, but some of the scrapped content could have added more depth to the film overall.
