Title: HasCon (PonyFair 2017) info
Post by: SweetTune on June 02, 2017, 02:51:12 PM
Hi all! I just wanted to keep you all in the HasCon loop.

A discounted rate is being worked on for past Pony Fair attendees. They are trying to figure out exactly how they are going to manage this. Not sure if there will be a discount code or if I will send out an email to those in the Fair ticketing database with a link or what. This is all still being worked out, but there will be some sort of discount available.

We will have our own "reseller/collector" area for ponies. I am waiting to find out how much space/size/ how many tables/ and cost of these spaces will be, but hopeful that they will be somewhat comparable to past Pony Fair pricing.

I've been given the green light for planning presentations/ activities/ contests and customizing a VIP experience for MLP collectors.

A Hall of Fame dinner is in the works for this year. Again, costs/ number of attendees etc. is still being worked out.

Also, in the way of presentations, what would you like to see? Or better yet, do you have an idea you'd like to present? Please let me know via email summer@mylittleponycon.com

I won't be planning any of the kids/family areas because that is under a different "umbrella" but they are happening.

This meeting was very encouraging for me because before this there were so many unknowns. Although Pony Fair is not "officially" happening this year, I want you all to know that it will look very much the same inside of HasCon. Please know that the goal is for collectors to be happy with the event and for it to contain the elements of Pony Fair (plus many more.) They have listened to all of the concerns that I've presented them with and are more than happy to work with me to find suitable solutions (Ex: ticket costs, collector sales tables, etc.)

My one suggestion would be that you go ahead and book your hotel rooms or figure out accommodations if you are planning on attending or think you might attend. I've heard that they will fill up fast.

On a personal note, I want to say that Hasbro has supported the MLP Fair for years and helped us evolve into something we couldn't have imagined when we first started out. They believed in my vision and continue to support the collecting community. This year as they embark on their inaugural year of HasCon, I am honored to support them and their event. I don't believe that we've seen the end of Pony Fair so please don't despair. Pony Fair isn't going away. The collecting community isn't going away. We have the opportunity to be a part of something BIG and exciting this year and I urge you all to take part in it.

To get a discount I need to have attended a previous fair?
Does the fair database get purged? My last fair was in 2011 (and I still have the receipt & photos to prove it!)

No worries, we'll cross that bridge when/if it comes to that. I have databases that go back to 2011. Before that, I do not, but the events were so small then that it isn't hard to verify who was there. ;)

Wow, this is really great news!  Thank you so much for advocating for the community, Summer.  This has the potential to be a real bonus for vendors...we pay a price more in line with what we have in the past, but get the exposure of a much larger con.  I don't think I'll be able to go with details coming in a little too late to submit for vacation and such, but since we have a better idea of what to expect for next year, I'd definitely want to attend/vend in the future.  So happy for this update! :)

What if we paid at the door? The last fair I attended was 2011 since I live in RI but I wasn't sure I'd be able to make it until last minute so I only got the door ticket.

Will there be a room block reserved anywhere for pony fair people specifically?  Does anyone know which hotel(s) offer the HasCon discounted rate?
Will the pony fair portion run Friday through Sunday?

*happy dance!!!

Yayay so happy to hear. I hope the con doesn't "sell out" before we are able to get special pricing. I'm so excited!!!!!

"There are limited hotel rooms in Providence. To help ensure that our attendees have the best opportunity to reserve a room, we will send you the link to the reservation system with your ticket purchase confirmation. Please note that this does not guarantee you a hotel room, but it does give you access to our special discounted rates while supplies last."

So question... if we book a discounted "pony fair price ticket" will we have access to this special discounted rate? Is there another way to access this?

also this is kind of difficult as my attending the fair / hascon is partially based on the cost of the hotel.... i dont want to have to purchase event tickets only to find out the room even with the discount is to expensive?  would the event tickets be refundable ?

It's under the "Travel" tab on the HasCon site, scroll down to the bottom where it says WHERE TO STAY.  That was my concern too.  I will have a cheap rental car, so I'm currently booked at an airport hotel but I'd much rather stay at the convention hotel if the cost is reasonable.  They may get booked up before HasCon works out this special ticketing pricing, though, unless there's a specific room block for Fair goers that they're working on?

I booked another reservation at the Hilton Providence.   I don't know if that's even the hotel with the special discount, but it's right next to the convention.  If all the hotels sell out, maybe they will be able to apply the room rate to my room after the ticket thing is sorted.  It's a shot in the dark, but if it doesn't work out, I can always cancel.   Rates were around $220/night with something like $25/night parking, so if we're unable to get a room block for a lot less than that, I'll just stay at the airport hotel.

Event tickets are probably non-refundable.  That's been the case with Fair tickets, and it's HasCon's policy too.  Tickets and booth, are the only things I haven't booked yet, because of that reason.

yeah this year is really looking bad for me,, its just bad news after more bad news.

i phoned over 20 hotels since feb to get "good" rates was for dbl bed, queen beds, kinds beds, fold out beds, rooms and suites.  the prices are just really bad.   i am now holding 3 different hotels from 615, to 832 to 1500 for 4 nights.  problem is 2 of those are in warwick and will require me taking taxis to and from  the event so the cost will be even more for transportation.

greyhound bus tickets have gone up by a few hundred dollars making it so expensive to take a bus when my plan tickets for past fairs were not that price.

factor in the fact that NOTHING is bought and paid for yet is the biggest problem,  to have to pay for all tickets, transportation and hotel relatively close to each other i think it going to be impossible.

i might be sitting this year out

I just booked the Hilton Providence as well. It's a bit on the pricey side but it's the closest, nicest hotel. I may cancel if I find a better rate because ill have to drive anyway. ;p

Does anyone know if the Hilton Providence is a doable walking distance to the convention center... with stuff to sell?

I think it's the closest hotel to the Dunkin Donuts part, just a little one-way street that separates the back side of the hotel and the south end of the DD Center. Note that the front of the Hilton doesn't face the DD Center.  From Google Maps street view, there looks to be an exit out the back of the hotel, cross the street, to a side entrance of the DD Center.  Whether or not the MLP Fair is in DD or whether it's in the RI Convention Center part, we don't know yet (DD and RI Con Center are connected).  And it may be that only the front entrance of these places are open, but to me, the Hilton is about as close as you get.  Hasbro is across the street from DD front entrance.

The Omni is on the north side by the RI Convention Center, and I *think* it's connected to it via skybridge.  So there's a good chance that the Omni is the discounted hotel for HasCon.... or one of them, we don't know  where they've got room blocks.  It's super expensive at their advertised rate though!

By the way AirBnB, VRBO, and HomeAway are great alternatives, especially if you can get a small group of people to go in together.   I did that recently for a ponymeet, and it was cheap split between all of us, and a whole lot of fun too.  The downside is that you need to be careful about cancellation policies, and some downtown places don't have free parking available.

My airbnb reservation just got approved, and the lady seems super nice! I'm only paying around $400 and it's a one bedroom apartment. There were some others on there that were inexpensive as well!

For those who are staying out of town, not at a connected hotel, will there be a decently convenient access door for vendors to use to haul in all their stuff? I assume there is a parking garage at the convention center (for a cost of course)?

And oh by the way, awesome maps, ashlyne!

I tried to get more information regarding the group rates for the convention and the representative told me that the blocks are actually at two hotels that are farther away, Hotel Providence and the Hilton Garden Inn. Once you register for the convention you have access to the group rates for these rooms. Since details are still being worked out, the group rates for exhibitors have not been released yet. This mean there is a chance everything will change but I just wanted to give an FYI based on the information I have now.

Accordingly you also can't book and then have then later have the room rate applied. You have to book direct using the information received after registration.

Love the map ashlyne... stupid question.. did the Hasbro headquarters move since the last Fair that was there?

Thanks Foxtale! This is good information. Too bad the discount can't be applied until after tickets are bought though :/   I wonder if the  Hotel Providence and the Hilton Garden Inn will have shuttles running to the convention then?

I have no idea if Hasbro Headquarters moved. I was surprised to see it across the street too!  That is the address listed when I search for Hasbro's address, so maybe it did.   Sure is convenient for them!

I'm local so I usually go to RI Comic Con which is in the same buildings Hascon will be in. The Convention Center is connected to the hotel by a hallway which also connects to the Skybridge to access the mall which has a food court. My advice is always eat at the mall not inside the Convention Center which is overpriced.

Hasbro didn't move their original location but they did get some additional office space in Providence. My friend actually worked in their cafeteria a bit.

That is cool to know that they have additional offices. I wonder which departments are in what buildings. :D

The more we talk about this the more I remember the first MLP Fair that was in Providence... I believe it was at the convention center... was the dunkin center not built yet? My memory is so fuzzy. It was so long ago. It was over 10 years ago XD

I was wondering the same thing too... anyone on the Transformers forums? I tried to read but all I saw was confusion over who Hascon is for (and comments about bronies >.<) and mostly talk of exclusives. It appears everyone is very confused lol

Right!  BotCon was also shut down like Pony Fair.

As far as I can tell there's no-one on the Transformer forums with an "in" like we have here with Summer.  So there was a big flurry about how expensive it is and the same confusion we had, but now it's quiet there.  I guess apathy has set in. Seems like not very many people are going though.

I wonder if that would change if the exclusive ends up being really epic.

I have wanted to go to Hascon as soon as I heard it was a thing. Especially since it seems like they are finally going to give some love to LPS. The only thing giving me pause is the price. I really wish they would reconsider the prices because it's rather high right now.

I booked two rooms at a Best Western through hotels.com a month or so ago. It's free to cancel if it turns out that we can't go. Interestingly, the site said that all rooms were sold out when I tried to book just one room.

I checked the Omni site two days ago for September 7-11, and it said that there were no rooms available for those dates. I didn't, however, try any different date combos or actually call the hotel to see if I could get a different result.

Are discounts going to be offered to BotCon attendees as well I wonder. I don't see either fandom being happy with prices.

OK, Pony Fair has not been shut down. I believe that Summer is doing everything in her power to make this fair just as enjoyable as all of the past fairs. The unknowns and lack of updates have been disappointing, but no one can blame her for that. That rests squarely on Hasbro not allowing her to tell us until they say, "OK."

The unknowns and lack of updates have been disappointing, but no one can blame her for that. That rests squarely on Hasbro not allowing her to tell us until they say, "OK."

Bold By Me.

And that bolded reason is why it doesn't feel like a FAN convention anymore :(   the control that Hasbro wrests over the Fair has gotten worse and worse until now we are here, at this point.

Summer has done and is doing a fantastic job representing the community, listening to what we want to see at our Fair, and communicating those things to Hasbro. It has to be frustrating and disheartening to read all of the complaints. Since Hasbro has become involved in Pony Fair, there has been a contract in place. It's unfortunate that we've had to wait so long for information this year. It really is, and I have my own opinions about why that is just as I'm sure everyone else does. We wanted more involvement on their part, and here we are. We can't have it both ways. We either accept their involvement (and sponsorship - $$$, licensees, "exclusives," etc.), or put our own money into taking our fair back to an event without them and the perks that they bring to it.

Well then the solution is obviously to put your own money into organizing a new event if you're not happy with the status of the Fair. No one ever said there could only be one large-scale collectors' event. I'm not going to say anything further about it; it doesn't belong in this post.

I'm sorry for speaking for others here, but I expect that many of the people in this thread are grateful for Summer and all the hard work she's doing and has done while also being sad and scared for the state of the fair.

Many of the hesitant, upset, mad at Hasbro, whatever users here also love Summer and everything she's done. Just because they don't like what the fair has become doesn't mean they aren't thankful for her.

Skig- I support our local event. I've only ever not attended due to military obligations. I appreciate everything Summer does. That doesn't mean I'm not disappointed in what Hasbro is turning the Fair into. It's not always so black and white.

OK, but we don't even KNOW what it's going to be like. My first Fair was in 2008. I didn't get to return after that until 2012 and attended the following two years. The difference was amazing - nicer venues, more events, better organization. Summer is working hard to make this year just as enjoyable as past fairs that were very well attended and liked. No matter what I may think of Hascon, I trust Summer not to let our fair turn into something we don't want.

I trust Summer. I do not trust Hasbro. We are less than 90 days out with no information at all regarding ticket prices, much less vendor costs or hotel information. Most people cannot throw together money like this at the last minute.
Title: Re: HasCon (PonyFair 2017) info
Post by: skig on June 12, 2017, 02:18:19 AM
I agree that people can't throw together money that quickly. OK, so I went and dug this stuff out. Keep in mind that I did not attend the last two Fairs in Chicago, so I don't know how much admission and booths cost those years. It's been stated that they hope to keep costs comparable to previous years.

2014 Celebration Dinner Adult cost: $49.99
2014 Celebration Dinner Child cost: $22.09

2014 Weekend General Admission Pass cost: $43.19
2014 Vendor Booth cost: $48.47
I believe children 12 and under were free.

So there's a starting point. Anyone who has info on the last two years' costs, feel free to correct and/or update me. Package deals were considerably more, but I don't have info for those, if they're even an option for this year.

Prices were a bit higher in Chicago but not by much. Last year general admission $64.59;  booths $64.29; dinner adult $48 (Or thereabouts. The ticketing website added fees). (Package deals with Tshirts and whatnot were more of course)

Yes, that's true. I would actually be perfectly fine with the way things have been in the past - dinner on Friday evening and actual fair on Saturday and Sunday. (I didn't think and booked my rooms for Friday check-in. I'm so not all about driving all night and going straight into Fair before being able to check into the hotel. Of course, if we attend and that's the way it is, then that's the way it is.)

maybe Hasbro will be more responsive after their big robots movie debut at the end of the month? Or maybe they'll be more responsive after SDCC at the end of July?  I work for a small company, but I know big events sometimes means all hands on deck and it takes us longer to get back to people

Hasbro Transformers just posted a video about Hascon on facebook (sorry I can't figure out how to get a link), adding that Stan Bush is coming, but not really saying much except "ya we'll have transformers here".  and a clue that there will be only one TF exclusive mentioned in the singular.

Maybe a Pony vid shout out is coming soon too?

I am hoping to attend with my daughter for just Saturday since we live close by. I've never been to a MLP Fair and I was hoping that it would be close to me this year, but then it changed to Hascon.  But that's ok!  I hope to see some pony friends and I just want the experience of it with my 9 year old daughter who loves G1 ponies and other Hasbro toys like LPS!

I did not see the life sized board games thing listed! That is going to be so cool. I'm picturing like the Candyland type game board from Katie Perry's music video. :D

I can see these be more of a selling point for bronies and FiM show fans, who are used to spending big $$ on autographs and voice talent panels. But ya, it's not likely going to appeal to the G1 collecting community.

I can do without HoF dinners and pajama parties, as much fun as they are.  It's not that hard to organize an informal group dinner ;)  But if collectors aren't getting a traditional vending room with reasonable pricing, then I can't justify the expense.   I haven't seen or heard anything that says they've nixxed that well (unless I missed it buried under all the reactions?) so I'm on standby in hopes at least that part works out.  Buying and selling ponies, and interacting with everyone during that part of the event, is a big part of what I enjoy about the Fair.

Yeah. I have a feeling we should wait a little longer *just in case*, but also have a feeling that, even if there is a separate room for us, there will not be a discounted price of any kind. At this late date, it's just hard to imagine anything changing. And there are still too many questions in my mind about the Hascon vendor and ticket info to even begin to give them any money, particularly when we don't really have any interest in all the usual Con stuff (stars and expensive autographs, behind the scenes, talks, etc), other than MLP, seeing MLP pals, and selling/trading.

Has anyone figured out yet if the vendor fees include tickets to the rest of the con, or are they separate things?

The irony of all this is that Hascon will probably be a financial success.  Big corporations don't take huge risks like this without fiercely analyzing the bottom line.  They'll make money overall.  and probably keep doing it annually.

In other words, no pony fair this year. How sad that is. Just think, if Hasbro would mind their friggen business, we could be getting ready to have our fair this year in mid-July. I hate greedy people and worse, greedy companies that can't leave the little guy alone.

I can't swing another $400 for my boyfriend and I to attend all that, and the HOF dinner and pajama party has been a highlight for me the last few years. I have nonrefundable plane tickets, so I'm still in, but with the ticket prices going up from 45 to 165 for my guest, I just can't. I've been trying to stay positive but this makes me really sad.

Personally I don't think so.  The point of going to a large, big, expensive con is that you have access to ALL the fandoms you're interested in.  Not just "fandoms that Hasbro happens to make toys of."  And the point of going to smaller cons like MLP Fair and Botcon is that EVERYTHING is catered to the toy you happen to collect, EVERYONE there is a fan of it.

In addition some events are clearly catered at young kids while other are catered towards adult collectors, and that's very weird?

Like, I actually could picture Hascon being an effective "family con" catered to local families with young kids who, yeah, probably have a couple MLPs, a couple LPS, and a couple Transformers in the house--but not at $165 for the weekend and having to pay for all kids over 3 years old.  Let's say you have three kids . . . Tickets for mom, dad, and the kids for the weekend would be $555!  Not going to be a destination for a "casual" family.  Maybe if the tickets were $50 per adult and kids up to twelve were free.

The irony of all this is that Hascon will probably be a financial success.  Big corporations don't take huge risks like this without fiercely analyzing the bottom line.  They'll make money overall.  and probably keep doing it annually.

Yeah tbh the price is the biggest issue for me. Price is what has kept me from going to past Fairs except the 2011 one since even tho the Fair itself is reasonably priced, I'd have to pay for bus/train/plane tickets and a hotel room and that stuff isn't cheap. I was excited the Fair was finally going to be in my backyard again but then they make it too expensive for anyone to sell ponies and even the tickets are rather pricey  (tho I'm sure it's still cheaper than travel and hotel for a Pony Fair in another state).

Hasbro kinda shot themselves in the foot with the prices since RI Comic Con is $75 for an adult for the whole weekend and $25 for kids 2 months later in the same buildings as Hascon. Most families are probably just gonna wait and go to RICC.

It's pretty blatant how Hasbro just does not care AT ALL about collectors and pre-G4 fans.
I genuinely hope this flops tbh.

I was on vacation and I am trying to catch up on the news but I am having trouble finding the news, only reactions....

Is it official that there is going to be: 1) No pony or toy re-seller area 2) No discount tickets for previous fair attendees 3)No discounts for vendor booths 4) No other smaller collector panels

When it was said that they will try to group re-sellers together... were they saying for that crazy vendor pricing or the artist table pricing? Did they announce another bracket of tables?

Thank you everyone! :D

Also.... $200 for the dinner!? That is crazy! I expect Oscar party level swag lol

It is official. Summer can't come on here and post b/c of her contract with Hasbro, but she's told some of us and we can spread the word
NO special MLP or vintage toy seller area
NO discount tickets (well, there's a $10 off promo code, which is just insulting imo)
NO discounts for vendor booths (plus the requirements for vendors are insane!). Hasbro supposedly says they will put resellers together in one area of the vendor room, but that's at the main big prices....
NO small collector panels (the ones normally put together by us collectors)
Artist tables are not to sell vintage toys...and there's some legalese on what is/isn't allowed and what Hasbro will be able to use for themselves...
NO other bracket of tables

my hubby and I went through the 3 PAGES of legalese on the vendor/artist table application. There are LOTS of requirements, restrictions, and things that would cost you money if you're not already set up as a business with your own liability insurance.

Thank you so much for clarifying Roogna! Now everything makes sense (including the "offical" non-offical word).

Overall it is very disheartening to hear, I was so optimistic. I appreciate all the hard work and effort of everyone involved. Absence make the heart grow fonder though right? I will just have to wait to vend at some events next year and see all the awesome pony people!

I will most likely still go as I already got a ticket and have friends in the area (just to see what it is all about since I love conventions and toys). The dinner sounds interesting but $200 on top of the already steep weekend price is hard to swallow, especially when im not going to be able to sell part of my collection.

If we find out anything about how many exclusives you are able to buy I may also setup a list to pickup for people as well... but my bet is it will be available on Hasbrotoyshop.com after the event.

I went to both fairs that were held in RI. I believe it was in 2008 and then again in 2011?? I would love to go to this one, but it is BEYOND disheartening that Hasbro is willing to throw us so far under the bus that they won't support us any longer. What's the point in mixing MLP Fair in with HasCon as this point? Can't we do our own thing?

Not this year, because Hasbro waited so long to NOT tell us anything and then forbade the Staff from telling us *anything*.  So there's no time to plan anything last-minute.
But next year - http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,386965.0.html

Honestly I don't know, though last I checked there were still some stall vendor tickets I think. I don't think there are any weekend ones though, those sell out fast :/ so I guess it wouldn't be worthwhile to come all this way?

I did say it half as a joke, but I genuinely think it would be amazing if there was a way.

Cool!! I was kind of surprised they sold out so quickly. I guess it's because they offer single day options in pre-sales, so they hit capacity for Saturday quickly.

But anyway 2018 is looking good for pony pal adventures. :cheer:

At this rate UK ponycon will end up having to have a bigger venue next year ;)

They sell out faster each year now :/ It may be to do with the early bird discount, but I think that since the year bronycon didn't happen and the unexpected sellout, it's been a case of people not wanting to miss getting tickets. It used to be that you could buy on the door, but :/ not any more.

I think it would be really nice to have more people from all over at the UK con, though. I mean, I'd like to one day go to a big one in the US but I have all kinds of issues with long distance flights that mean I have to either pay upgrade or lose my mind...and I can't realistically afford to do that very often :/ But UK con always has people from Europe, and occasional folk from other places, like Whitney as well. It would be great to open that up even more.

Just a shame it can't be this year, as I feel like so many people over there will be missing out because of Hasbro's u-turn :/

Considering the amount of space they booked (spanning 2 convention centers) & the general reaction to ticket prices, I would be surprised if it sells out in pre-sales. I don't think they've advertised if there will be tickets at the door or not, but I have a strong feeling there will be.

yeah that was my feeling too... but I wondered if they weren't going to offer at the door tickets for some odd legal reason. I can't see why they won't. I feel like a lot of semi-local families  will show up the day of (instead of buying in advance) That was what happened with Play-con.

They also said to me, that you can change which day you are going in your account before the tickets ship (and after August 8th all tickets are going to be picked up at the door). So I originally picked Saturday and I was able to upgrade my ticket (with a discount) to the weekend pass... but I could have also changed my Saturday to a Sunday...

I honestly just want to go for the MLP stuff but not necessarily FIM since I don't care that much for the show anymore.  I was actually just interested in going to buy ponies and stuff from people for our section of HasCon.  I know that sounds weird but since I don't get to the MLP Fair that often I thought this might be a good opportunity.  I asked my friend Firefly who would bring me and we would attend together and see what she thinks.  I don't really have any interest in other Hasbro products.  I don't want it to seem like a waste of money for her though and it doesn't seem like the exclusives are worth trying to get.

Since you are in Rhode Island it might be worth it for you to check it out, but I guess I would just caution against thinking there's going to be loads of pre-G4 MLP stuff.  There's not.

The vendor prices are so expensive that the people who normally were vendors at previous MLP Fairs (i.e. normal collectors) can't afford it.   There isn't going to be an area set aside specifically for MLP collectors, and my guess is that most of the MLP fans who are there will be hardcore G4 fans who are willing to pay the $$$ to see a preview of the upcoming movie or get signatures from the voice actors.
