Title: I wanna see restorations!
Post by: KottonKandy on February 03, 2018, 08:32:34 PM
It’s the most satisfying thing in the world, for me, to see haggard baity ponies given the love they deserve and all dolled up! I wanna see before and afters!
Here’s one I finished today, to get us started

She had a good bath, a full rehair (which I left extra long because why the heck not?), and now wears a sculpted polymer clay replacement earring.

Now it’s your turns! Show me your restored beauties before and after pics!

Hi ! Lovely restoration, she looks so much nicer now. Congrats. =)
If you want to see restorations, here's this thread : http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,388848.0.html
And since I love restorations too, I've documented this 23 pics step by step restoration process : https://imgur.com/a/tmxv5
AND there's a bunch of "before/after" or WIP pics of my ponies on my own collection thread : http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,389656.0.html
And as a bonus, I've cleaned up bits of the Paradise Estate I recently found in a flea market. =D http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,389917.15.html

Hope you'll have your dose of satisfaction, have a great day !

Rose

Ditto with Safflower and KottonKandy, I really don't like tons of pics out of spoilers for the technical and practical reasons mentioned above. I simply don't go to overloaded topics anymore and that's sad because I miss some interesting ones. Since I do know old computers and weak  bandwidth exist, I think about others and put all my pics in spoilers. If it's not, that's because it's a single and small one in the whole topic, it does no harm.

I love restoring ponies! I'm jot the most skilled at it but here are two who look really lovely after a bit of love. Mapper was given a full clean, inside and out, and applejack had her forelock re haired with donor hair (I don't know what pony it was from though). You have all done such a great job!

The damage was minor, but I'm happy with it! This was my first experience with deep "maim" on the body of a pony.

A permanent wound or injury, often the infliction of.  The lion maimed the zebra grievously.

Whoa. Isn’t that SS Gusty?!? I had no idea that sunfading would work on SS! To be quite honest, I don’t know much about sunfading in general. I have a few who could benefit but I’ve always been too spooked to try it.
And how difficult is it to rehair rainbow (or any multi-color) ponies? I’ve not had one come to me yet that needed it and I’m completely baffled as to how one goes about it. Is there a way to tell how many plugs in the mane gets each color? Or do you just count/eye it from the remaining hair you’re replacing? And is there a rule on separating the colors for the tail? Or not?

Anyways, I am humbled and impressed with your restoration skills! You do all the things I’ve been too scared to do lol!

Thank you! I didn't know if it would work either since everyone says it's the glue that is yellowed and won't sun fade but Paradise whitened so well I decided to give it a try. I don't get great sun light here in Canadian winters so she sat in a window being rotated for at least 6 months. She could still go a little whiter but I was impatient and she turned out really nice compared to her before.

For the hair placement of multiple colors I trim any remaining hair as short as possible and take a photo so I can count the plugs when I rehair. For the tail I try not to mix up the colors too much. I take an equal amount of each color and pretty much layer them in the order they look the best to me. If I want a certain color to be more dominant that goes on top.

Thank you so much for the compliments! I need to get better on my hair cutting skills so for now I've left the manes longer. It just takes practice and experimenting. Start off with a pony that is bad enough that it won't matter if you mess up.  :)

Ahh, that’s really clever to take a pic beforehand of the mane. I can be kinda ditzy at times so I probably would’ve removed all the hair then be completely dumbfounded on what to do.

I occasionally buy TLC lots, so I’m sure I’ll end up with a particularly nasty pony to practice on at some point. Same for the SSs. Again, I’ve been lucky and all my white SSs are already pretty white to begin with. I have a few normal white ponies who could benefit from sunfading, but I’m still sorta reluctant to attempt them. I don’t wanna mess them up further! They’ve already had a visibly rough life!  >_<

I tend to leave my rehairs pretty long, so I can’t comment on the accurate length. I figure I already have the hair in her scalp, AND in the future if I ever go crazy and somehow decide to sell my collection, the ridiculously long hair would be an excellent flag to remind me that the hair is not original.

Thank you so so so much for the tips and the pics! I truly appreciate it! :lovey:

A Blossom who I thought was covered in age spots, but her 'sister' in the bait lot was a blank orange half note with her head painted white, I've decided she was either painted black, or someone did a horrible job trying to take the paint off, and gave her a good re-paint:

I'm so happy you liked them! There was some pen and marker but mostly Sweet Tooth was caked in paint. To be honest, I pretty much used every method I knew of to her back to her original self. soaking her, toothbrush scrubbing, magic eraser, acetone, and sunfading. Some of the pores in her plastic still have deep remnants of paint in them if you look very closely but I'm happy with how she turned out. Unless I find an insanely minty one with factory curl this girls staying in my collection <3

Lovely restorations RoseNoire and kissthethunder - I've seen your Precious pocket before, buuut she is so impressive that she deserves to be seen many times more  :)

It is so nice when someone spends the time and effort on a pony who has had a rough time, I really enjoy seeing the results.

I have 2 to share, but Baby Fifi will only be finished today so we will wait for her before posting. And as kissthethunder mentioned, sometimes all the pony needs is a LOT of spa time.

So many restorations, thank you lovesbabysquirmy!

Here are my two most recent:

Baby Fifi
Spoiler
She has been completely rehaired and had her tooth and symbols repainted.

Pinwheel
Spoiler
All I did with her was an extreme spa day. She has no age spots and perfect symbols, which was my reason for buying her.
