Title: I got a chicken. And EGGS! Updated photos pg 4
Post by: Gator on March 15, 2018, 05:58:07 PM
Near where I live and work, there is a chicken processing plant.  I commute down a busy four-lane highway, and every morning you see the trucks loaded with chickens heading to the plant.  It is not uncommon to occasionally see dead chickens along the highway.  How they get/fall out of the cages I do not know.

20 plus years ago, when I was in highschool, I found one these chickens alive and kept her as a pet.  Her name was Claire.

Last year, I found another alive, but she was badly injured.  I work at a vet and we humanely euthanized her.

This morning, I found another.  She is injured, but improved throughout the day.  She still has raspy lung sounds, possibly contusions from the high fall off the truck.  But she can get up and walk, which she would not do this morning.

Here's to hoping she makes it through the night.

It's so good of you to take care of her. All of the chickens I've ever met were so affectionate.

It's neat to hear that you take care of them. I've heard chickens are great to have, hopefully she pulls through.

I would cry if I lived by a chicken plant like that. I love my four chickadees. I hope she makes it through, they’re such lovely creatures.

So sweet of you to do that.  :) A bit of advice, Apple cider vinegar in water works well to reduce stress.

I don't pretend to be a chicken expert, but what sort of chicken is it?
There are some breeds of chickens, which are SUPER gross, that they have to be processed at a certain time or they literally explode.  It's really terrible, something in their genes.  Probably not the sort of chicken you saved, but for some reason I felt the need to bring it up.

Chickens overall are super cool. I have six right now and love them lots!! ^.^

I      chickens!!! Best pet that poops breakfast ever!

In all seriousness, go you, and I hope she makes a good recovery. I adopt ex-battery hens. I have four presently and they are a joy. A little bit of TLC and they can come so far.  I have no experience of broilers, but hopefully working at a vet will garner some helpful advice in the least. Chooks bred for fast processing (as you're probably aware with your background) will be more prone to health issues than heritage breeds but you're giving her the best chance just by not ignoring her  :deathhug:

Wild Rasberry and Marlin, sadly I don't know the breed, I have just always heard the term broiler chicken, so I'm not sure.  She's just a white eating chicken, LOL!  I hope she dosen't explode.  My doctor did mention that, while trying to get her to walk again, that she was too top heavy because she's been so bred and pumped full food and things to get her to market.  He says hopefully with exercise and some weight loss she can move around better.
Well, it's 6:30am here, shortly I'll be heading down to the barn to see if she made it through the night.

She’s probably a Leghorn. They are used in those farms as egg layers, but then they’re eaten when they stop laying as much/past their prime.

Fingers crossed for her!

I agree that it sounds like a leghorn. The boilers are SO far they can't walk and have usually lost all of their feathers from lying around. I have quite few friends that raise them for 4-H and they are so nasty. But the leghorns are really sweet. My friend has one that in 9 years old.

Poor chicken-lady, I'm glad you saved her.  Commercial chicken processing is just so brutal and ugly...

We love our girls!  They are nearly 9 now but still cranking out an egg (every so often, haha)  (one of the girls did pass away so now we have just 2)

They are cute and funny animals

There are people around where we live who got some rescue chickens (factory chickens).  They looked better every year - and they did not explode. (I have never heard of that?)

It is alive!  I don't know if she knows how to drink water out of a bowl, as I have yet to see her eat or drink.  I think they they have those drip systems in the poultry houses.  She does not like me.  I cannot pet or hold her.  So much for being appreciative.  Now I have to figure out what to do with her.  I thought we had a pen behind the barn, but turns out my parents gave it away, so she is temporarily in the horse stall.

Yah that she made it through the night! And lol that she doesn't like you   Poor little thing - she's probably been through an awful lot and no human to date has given her any reason to feel predisposed to them. But earning her trust will be such an amazing and rewarding process if you can get that far.

She's probably been fed either pellets or mash her whole life so it probably goes without saying but try to match what she may have had (pellets will go to a mash like texture with a little soaking). If she's not eating that's not a great sign but if she's showing an interest hopefully you can move forward from there  ^.^  And if she's thirsty enough, I'm sure her instincts will lead her to the water, even if it's in a bowl.

One of my batt hens, Agnes, was a tough 'egg' to crack initially (lol). I think she'd been hard boiled for about 5 hours straight. I almost changed her name to battleaxe. But I worked on her ever so steadily an she's a real sweetheart now. Still hates being handled but I can tickle her tail feathers no trouble now and the first day she ate out of my hand is one I'll forever treasure. Fingers crossed for you moving forward with your little one! Even if you can't keep her maybe you'll find someone happy to take her on once she's well enough :)

Yay! If you can get close enough without being pecked, try dipping her beak into the water bowl. She probably has never been around people before, poor thing  :(

I use to hatch an egg with a group of friends (it's a long story) and take care of the chick... she did SO MUCH things with us, she get to the road with us, entered the house and acted like an usual pet . Saddly she died after 2 years, we still don't know why.

She sounds like she could be a Ross Cobb chicken. They're really heavy and stocky and their legs are prone to giving way occasionally, but with some love they always come back around. We've had quite a few and its very hard to make them loose weight. They are naturally heavy and good doers, even if they haven't been bred for meat, they can get fat off air  I hope she makes it ok!

I’m glad she’s doing alright! I like eating chicken, but we need a serious overhaul of the processing system to prevent poor things like this happening. I’m no expert on chickens, but perhaps try mashing her food up? If she’s been on mash for her whole life, perhaps she doesn’t recognize whatever the food you’re giving her is food. Then slowly introduce the new, whole food. Kind of like introducing dogs or cats to new food.
Here’s hoping she continues to get stronger.

I have one bad pic of her huddled in a cage after her fall , but I'll try to take a good one tomorrow.  I only work a half day so I'll be able to spend some time with her.
She likes to eat weeds.  Still a pain to catch.  I named her Bernadette after a character on the television series The Big Bang Theory.

Whales can bloat and burst due to gas build up. It can happen with cows too. Well actually, it can happen with anything that decomposes under the right circumstances.

Thank you SO much for saving the baby! I’m one of those that thinks All animals deserve to be treated well, even ones people tend to be afraid of like spiders or ones used for food. Chickens can make great pets, I have one friend (who is actually a member here) who has chickens and my mother has one that owns them too.

To be honest it seems to be left up to chance whether or not they want anything to do with you, my friend’s certainly did not when I visited their pen but mom’s friend’s ate right out of my hand! Eiher way they were TOO precious.

We inherited our mostly feral chickens from our neighbor... so when we first got them, I spent about an hour everyday reading kids' poetry to them so they would get used to the sounds of human speech and laughter.  I would expect Bernadette to be a cranky featherbutt for awhile :)

Awesome that her natural instincts are taking over and she is eating food!  :D

No.  But she's going to have to get used to me handling her daily until I can afford to finish the fence.  We're afraid our shetland pony will run into that exercise pen during the night, so we'll put Bernie up for the night and collapse the exercise pen for pony's safety.

I went to put Bernie to bed tonight, and she was already tucked up in her nest!  In less than 24 hours she has learned to use the ramp and knows the box is her house/roost!  For the past week she was kept in a stall until we could figure out what to do with her.  My goal is to afford to build a real coop instead of that little rabbit pen, and once I re-fence the other side of the paddock she can roam free.  Then I can get her a companion or two.  Right now one side of the paddock has wire with holes big enough for her to get through, and predators too.  So far Harley the pony has left the exercise pen alone during the day.

Oh my god.  Hearing that this is a common occurrence is both heartbreaking and enraging.  The negligence of the processing plant/transport company and their complete lack of concern for any of the living birds in their care is just appalling.  Not that the chickens who survive the truck journey have any kind of better fate to look forward to

Thank you so much for caring enough to rescue those poor chickens in distress.  You have obviously got a big heart and they are so lucky you came along when you did.  I'm glad you could prevent more suffering in their little lives.

First off, major kudos (and hugs!) to you for saving her! Chickens are wonderful pets; I’ve had them for most of my life. :)

It’s horrible what today’s meat industry is allowed to get away with. The way some of these places treat their animals is disgusting. Heavier regulation and higher standards really need to be implemented, on a widespread scale. It always seems like poultry in particular face a lot of abuse. :(

I remember reading, years back, about supplements meant to help “broiler”-type chickens develop strong legs, so that they can support their own weight... Maybe check into something like that?

Anyway, enjoy your new chicken pal! ^3^ I have a dozen of my own, and they’re so precious. Also, don’t feel bad if Bernadette takes a while to warm up to you... I’ve hand-raised my flock from the time they were a day old, and they still don’t let me pick them up or cuddle them without a fuss. XD

Wow, time flies.  Hard to believe I've had her almost two months.  Well, I never got around to fixing the fence.  Bernie stayed in the paddock for awhile, but she eventually learned to go under the gate and into the back pasture.  In the mornings, she's already out back searching through the grass and clover by the time I'm ready for work so I don't bother feeding her.  In the evenings, I think she knows I get home by 6pm because she's back in the paddock waiting by the gate, ready to be fed.  Then, as dusk falls, she goes to roost in her box.

There’s nothing better than fresh eggs! I’ve kept chickens for years they are making pets. Looks like Bernie has a great life with you! Also, when she is laying her body uses up much more protein than in the winter, so you can feed her scrambled egg or other high protein foods to help her out :)

Bad news.  Bernie was bonding closest with Harley the pony, especially since Bernie's coop is in Harley's paddock.  Due to hoof issues he has to stay off grass most hours of the day.  Today he startled and reared, and after all the rain we've had his dirt paddock was a mud hole.  He slipped and fell on his back.  My boss (a vet, I'm a vet tech) said he probably broke his back and died instantly.  Poor Bernie has lost her buddy.

Awwwww that is sad to hear.  Although it is good that the pony did not suffer after the accident :(

You have a way of finding animals that need rescue so I am certain that Bernie will find another friend in her backyard soon.

Man. Again, I’m super sorry to hear about this, but I hope Bernie’s taking this okay. If it was instant, it wasn’t prolonged suffering for poor Harley. I hope things start looking up.
